ItÕs Festival time! This Spring, as Nailsworth blossoms and the effects of the MayorÕs initiative to brighten up our town begin to show, we have not one but two Festivals in prospect. First, Nailstock is returning and will run from 29th April to 1st May. The hardworking organisers have gone to considerable lengths to ensure that the security of the event will be paramount so that visitors and residents can concentrate on enjoying the experience and the music. There are some great bands and other events on offer. Tickets are now available from the website, www.nailstock.com/. Then from 21st to 29th May the well-loved Nailsworth Festival will return for its 2011 season. As the organisers say, Ôit is designed to provide something that will appeal to everyone.Õ We think they have done an amazing job. The programme features on pages 12-13 as our central spread this month. Now is the time to get your tickets; just call in at the Town Information Centre (or Ruskin Mill, for events to be held there.) The website is www.nailsworthfestival.org.uk/. Nailsworth school wins county title Congratulations to the athletes at Nailsworth CofE Primary, who have excelled themselves this month by becoming ÔGlos County Sportshall Athletic ChampionsÕ, winning the County Indoor Athletic team challenge. To achieve this they had to beat qualifying teams from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Forest of Dean and the Cotswold Area. Events included a variety of relays, jumping and throwing activities. Everyone was amazing. They exceeded all expectations and rose to every challenge. Well done to all who were part of the team. The town is very proud of you! 1 2 Nailsworthy Free monthly newspaper for Nailsworth parish Published by the Nailsworth News team: next meeting 7pm, 6th April. Photographer: Martin Stone. Doris Highfield Although having lived in the area for only twenty-three years, Doris has made a significant contribution to the life of the town in many ways. At the time of her arrival, DorisÕs mother was a founder member of the Old PeopleÕs Club at Concorde. Following her motherÕs death, Doris became a helper at the club, attending one day a week to perform various tasks ranging from tea making and washing up, to organising card games and entertainment. This was her first experience of voluntary work, from which she still gains great satisfaction. For four years she was the Club Treasurer. Every Tuesday morning, Doris works with other volunteers at the Emmaus shop, a charity helping the homeless. Whilst some customers search for bargains in this plentiful emporium, many local residents often just call in for a friendly chat with the staff. Whilst on duty, Doris can generally be found operating the till. She has always been an enthusiastic member of Nailsworth WI, and for a number of years served on the committee which organised the annual programme of events. This included booking guest speakers, arranging trips, quizzes, skittles events and summer outings. As a committed Christian, Doris became a congregation member of Christ Church and was soon enlisted as one of the church flower arrangers. She also took her turn serving on the catering committee and cleaning rota. She is the current Covenant Secretary, dealing with relevant paperwork to claim back tax benefits for the church. An unexpected reward for her efforts came in 2002 when she was working as a fundraiser for Cancer Research. In that year, Her Majesty the Queen invited representatives of that charity (relaunched as Cancer Research UK) to a reception at Buckingham Palace. From a random selection of offices across the country, Nailsworth came out of the hat. So together with Chairman Nicky Rudall and dressed in her elegant best, Doris attended this special regal occasion where, under the glittering lights, the Queen thanked all those present for the wonderful support they give to this life-saving charity. It was an occasion she will never forget. Having moved here from London, Doris found Nailsworth to be a very friendly place. ÔPeople here have not only welcome us, but are always willing to find time for us,Õ she said. ÔWe count our blessings to be here.Õ She also acknowledges the wonderful support received from her husband Geoff. ÔHe has become my personal taxi-driver,Õ she added with a smile. The Town Council held a Special Town Meeting on Monday 21st December to listen to what the residents of Nailsworth wished to do about the proposed cuts by the County Council to two of our frontline services, these being the Youth Club and the Library. The County CouncilÕs intention was to completely withdraw funding from all youth clubs in the county and to drastically reduce the opening hours of our library. Seventy people turned out on that cold and snowy evening and following a Ôshow of handsÕ the vast majority, (plus letters of support) agreed that these valuable services should be retained. After Christmas when the Town Council met to decide on the precept (ie the amount the Town Council takes from the council tax), it had the mandate from the electorate to find an extra £24,000 for the Youth Club to operate as normal - 5 nights a week plus outreach work on the streets - and £10,000 to help with library services. Just to put these figures in perspective, it amounts to approximately 30p per household per week. It has since been announced by the County Council that funding has been withdrawn from all youth clubs despite a vigorous campaign countywide, and the opening hours of Nailsworth Library have been cut from 32 hours to 12 hours per week. Cuts to rural bus services are also due to be announced and we wait to see how we in Nailsworth will be affected. The Gloucestershire Constabulary is currently in consultation with members of the public regarding the closure of all police stations in this area apart from Stroud and Dursley. Steve Robinson, 834270, robinsons@fsmail.net Editorial comment Hanged if they did, hanged if they didnÕt Ð the funding cuts to Nailsworth services put our Town Council on the horns of the proverbial dilemna. They had one option open to them which is not available to the County Council; they could increase the level of Council Tax that we pay (the ÔpreceptÕ) since that has not been capped at local level, which would let them bail out at least some of the services under threat in the coming year. Whether or not you agree with their ultimate decision, they clearly felt that in the case of the Youth Club and the Library they had a responsibility to act and that the majority of local residents would support them. This paper has not always been impressed by NTCÕs record on public consultation. This time, however, they set up meetings, took soundings, talked to residents at events such as the FarmerÕs Market, and took notice of petitions. Difficult to see what else they could have done in the short time available. Then they acted. We believe that they made the right decision and that it was a courageous one. But if you disagree with that or with other policies and actions during their term of office, you will shortly have the opportunity to express your views, because the Town Council election for Nailsworth will take place on 5th May. Whether you want to make a stand about particular issues, or are simply looking for an opportunity to serve the town in this important role, this is your chance. There is still just time to consider putting yourself forward as a candidate to become a Town Councillor Ð www.stroud. gov.uk/docs/democ/elections.asp to find out how, deadline 4th April. Alternatively, be sure to read up on the candidates and vote on 5th May. This is your town; if you want to have a say in how it is run, then surely turning up at the ballot box is the least you can do. 24 years experience as a Professional Photographer¥ Weddings¥ Corporate¥ Public Relations¥Advertising & CommercialPlease call or email Clint for a no obligation quote. 01453 833848 or 07810 638175randall.clint@gmail.com www.pixelphotography.co.uk SELF CATERING HOLIDAY COTTAGE TO RENT IN PEMBROKESHIRE4 Star holiday cottage in Little Haven, Pembrokeshire. This will be on the basis of a ten year licence from the School to the Partnership for the Centre, ie the gym, hall and changing rooms when the football pitch is in use, to be used outside extended school hours. The Centre will be managed by the Centre Management Committee. A Nailsworth Sports & Leisure Partnership, comprising all the sports and leisure interests in the town is being formed which will play an active role in promoting the development of the Centre to provide more activities, particularly during the weekends and school holidays, and involving a wider age range and larger number of participants from the town and surrounding area. The Business Plan shows that on the basis of a trust-based operational model, with the benefit of the continuation of current lettings; the addition of new lettings; and a new deal for meeting the schoolÕs costs; supplemented by a transitional grant of £10,000 from Stroud District Council, the Centre will cover its costs (which include insurance, site and equipment upkeep) in its first two years of operation. Additional grant monies are being sought to provide full funding for the security works necessary to allow opening on the basis of the new model, which means that the Centre can be used without involving the school caretaking staff. Hall at Nailsworth CofE Primary School Local crime rate falls Police in Nailsworth are pleased to say that crime in the area has decreased for the third year running. The local policing team are working hard to see it fall still further, but they are asking the community to help by following some simple crime prevention advice and reporting suspicious activity. Officers are particularly keen to work with residents to stop the burglary of sheds and garages. These break-ins tend to be committed by opportunistic thieves and can often be easily prevented. Inspector for the area Kirk Harrison (pictured right), said, ÔDuring the warmer weather it is easy to be complacent about keeping your property secure. Sheds and garages can be especially vulnerable if not fitted with adequate security. It is surprising how often people underestimate the value of what is in these outbuildings, but the cost of items like bikes and power tools can soon add up, making them very attractive to criminals. By following some simple but effective steps, shed owners can dramatically reduce the chance of thieves striking. Locking or bolting a shed is an inexpensive way of deterring burglars, while fitting opaque windows will hide valuables from view.Õ Inspector Harrison added, ÔAs the weather improves, it is also a good idea to lock windows and doors when a room is unoccupied or you are in the garden. If youÕre out in the evening perhaps set up some lights on timers or simply leave a light on - just to put that bit of doubt in a burglarÕs mind. Residents can be sure that local officers will continue to patrol the area and work hard to bring offenders to justice. But you can help make life as difficult and risky for criminals as possible, by thinking about the items you leave on display and by properly securing those outbuildings.Õ For detailed advice on how to protect your home and shed, visit the Crime Reduction section of the Gloucestershire police website at www. gloucestershire.police.uk. To report an incident or any suspicious activity contact Gloucestershire Police on 0845 0901234. You can also give information anonymously by contacting the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or by visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Use the 0845 number above to contact your local officers. It starts with Mothering Sunday on the first Sunday (a special service, 9.30 am at St GeorgeÕs), Palm Sunday in the middle of the month and we will celebrate Easter the week later on the 24th. Readers of a certain age will remember the black and white TV ad for a famous washing-up liquid with a child lisping, ÔMummy why are your hands so soft?Õ with Mum up to her elbows in the sink filled with soap suds - cue music ÔNow hands that do dishes...Õ That advert, as well as the adverts for Bisto gravy and for dazzling white shirts on a washing line are from a different era, alien to the grime of Corrie and Eastenders. Mums were portrayed in a quiet, comforting way, knowing all the important answers to life - how to keep hands soft, make gravy and repair the damage when youÕve dribbled it all down your front! The mother of Jesus could not have known all that would happen when the angel Gabriel visited her and said that she would give birth to the Son of God. She proudly watched him growing up, saw the miracles he performed and the way he explained the Kingdom of Heaven like no other and saw crowds acclaiming him as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on Palm Sunday. But then, a week later, she watched as he was crucified on a Cross in front of a jeering crowd. Jesus did exactly what he said he would, when he rose from the dead three days later. There are many things that are happening in the world at the moment that we canÕt understand. In the same way we are able to rely on our mothers to be there and know the answers, try following the journey to the Cross in your local church over the next weeks and let Him comfort you. He knows the answers to even more questions than my Mum did! Reverend Stephen Earley Mary Magdalen announcing the resurrection to the apostles (St. Albans Psalter, reproduced courtesy of WGA) Looking for hope As Easter gets closer, the church is getting ready to celebrate new life emerging from dark and desperate times. We seem to have had an epidemic of disasters lately Ð civil unrest in North Africa and the Ivory Coast, floods and earthquakes in the Pacific, mud slides in Brazil, the Japanese tsunami and the ongoing strife in Madagascar, Israel/Palestine and Afghanistan. Some are Ôhuman madeÕ but the earthquakes, floods and tsunamis are deemed to be ÔActs of God.Õ I canÕt accept that definition. As far as IÕm concerned, itÕs just a term used by insurance companies to denote unforeseen catastrophes that cannot be covered by insurance. I do not believe for a moment that God is responsible for these dreadful events. I donÕt apportion blame to any one thing or deity. We live in a beautiful world Ð but that world has fault lines running all the way through it and from time to time, they shift. It is a marvel to me that humanity is so resilient and that the death toll from these so-called natural events is much less than the loss of life caused by the human conflicts in the aforementioned countries. For those of us who claim that God is love, God is not the cause of sorrow and grief. God is in the actions of all those who seek peace in the world; peace amongst peoples and a lifestyle that brings peace to a troubled eco system. Centuries ago, a Bronze-Age people believed that God was responsible for bringing down fire from the sky or flooding the whole world to wash it clean from humanityÕs evil. Unfortunately there are still some Bronze-Age thinkers out there today, but for most of us, our thinking has moved on. Our world is a living eco-system and our lives impact upon it. We now know much more about the cause and effect of our exploiting the earthÕs resources. This knowledge is a source of hope. We can all play our part in making life on this planet more sustainable. As we in the churches celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, my prayer is for new life to come to be a reality for all who have experienced the devastation and loss of tumultous events. Wishing you all a blessed and peaceful Eastertide. This came to me recently in a funny way as a result of the screening of the ÔBig Fat Gipsy WeddingÕ. My fleeting moment of fame was when Channel 4 filmed our First Communion Service, featuring two Traveller children who had joined our group. It was quite an occasion, and a surprise for the parish (St. JosephÕs, Stonehouse - I spend my time with them as well as The Priory, Woodchester). One evening, after dark, there were some children causing a commotion, playing on the gas pipes stacked up in preparation for laying a new main. Thinking that I had better investigate, I stood a little way off and watched, hoping that eventually they would notice me. After a time it worked, there was less activity and then a complete lull. ÔThereÕs someone over there - heÕs watching us!Õ Suspense finally got the better of them, and one of them called out, ÔEre, Vicar!Õ I decided to extend the tension a bit longer by silently standing and watching. ÔEre É Vicar?Õ One of the children ventured over to me, ÔYou had that Big Fat Gipsy Thing, didnÕt you?Õ I broke my silence, and to my delight they all gathered round and wanted to know more. Then one of them Ð the youngest (and evidently the most discerning in RE matters) asked, ÔIs this church Catholic or is it Christian?Õ I hope I gave the right answer! I think it is good that such distinctions are getting fuzzier, and it is also good that there are distinctions that do not separate us too much. We can meet and share in so many ways, and yet enjoy the diversity of our traditions, while we journey together with The Lord Jesus through our little space in history. To which I would like to say: ÔDeo GratiasÕ which I suppose is a Roman way of showing that I am Christian, too! Father Bill Walk for Witness on Good Friday For many years now, Churches Together in Nailsworth (CTN) have organised a Walk for Witness through the town on Good Friday. This year is no exception and on Friday 22nd April at 11.30 am representatives from CTN will start their walk from the steps at Christ Church in Newmarket Road. The first stop will be the solicitors' car park at the bottom of Chestnut Hill followed by stops at the Library, Mortimer Gardens and finishing at the clock tower. At each of the stops some of the congregation from the participating churches (Christ Church, Quaker Meeting, St. GeorgeÕs and Woodchester Catholics) will lead the ministry. A cross to signify the crucifixion of Jesus will be carried throughout the walk. The Walk for Witness is a visible symbol of the start of the Christian festival of Easter. Everyone is welcome to join the walk at any point on the journey. Nigglesworth A resident of Star Hill who walks regularly around the hamlets of Lower Forest Green, Windsoredge etc. has written to report that although the 20 mph limit is now in place, every day she is forced to throw herself into the hedges and walls of the area. This is to avoid motorists passing up and down the narrow roads that have a 20 mph limit on them, at speeds in excess of 30-40 mph. She once waved at one such driver and politely pointed out the limit, to be met with a stream of foul and abusive language. Recent road works exacerbated the issue, with people using Star Hill, Jubilee Road and Northfields Road to avoid the traffic, all moving at speed toward Inchbrook Hill. Our correspondent suggests that those socially conscious folk who understand the need for the speed limit will, and do, obey it; others apparently have no idea of how slow 20 mph actually is; but the rest just donÕt seem to care about speed limits or the safety of others. HereÕs an unusual recycling initiative. Andrew and Alex (from Stonehouse and Tetbury) are local sixth form students who are both keen cyclists. They noticed that many old bikes were being sent to the tip, so started collecting unwanted bikes and bike parts free of charge before restoring them and selling them on to new owners. This reduces waste and helps the environment. They also reduce their impact on the environment in other ways, such as collecting many of the bikes using a special pushbike trailer (see picture). The date to note in your diary is Saturday 14th May. (The fact that this is the date of my wedding anniversary is clearly irrelevant!) The usual format will be followed, so just turn up at 10 am at the recycling area next to Tesco emporium and I will supply you with bags and litter pickers. I recommend that you bring your own gardening gloves but a few pairs will be available for those whose idea of gardening is a gin and tonic on the patio! It is best that you litter pick an area that is dear to your heart (let me know where, to avoid duplication) but failing this I will suggest areas that are liberally decorated with cider cans, crisp packets and takeaway bags. You then return at 12 noon for a photo with an amazing array of junk (we try to recycle as much as possible). Last year one helper suggested different coloured bags for different materials, eg grey for bottles, white for cans, black for landfill, so I will try to obtain a range of colours for those who have the energy to sort as they go. Not everyone will be able to do this, so it would be great if a few hardy people could stay behind, sort through the c**p and put it in the right bunker (not a nice job.) We usually only clear from land for which the District Council has no responsibility, so if you know of any roadways, pavements, or public areas that are Council owned and badly littered phone 754424 and ask the Council to sort it out. They usually do a good job when requested. Many have pondered how to prevent all the litter getting there in the first place, but as yet no answers have been found. If you have any suggestions, letÕs have them! Don Luke, 832812 An appeal from Nailsworth Silver Band The always excellent Nailsworth Silver Band are seeking some help with their outfitting. They now have practically all seats occupied in the band, although new members are always welcome, but this poses a problem when it comes to fitting everyone out with uniforms. In the past the band relied to a large extent on young players, but now they are growing up and need bigger jackets. This, together with a number of new adult members who also need jackets, has stretched the groupÕs wardrobe to its limit. The band are appealing to anyone who may have a Maroon Cutaway jacket lurking in their wardrobe to contact Bill Bruton on 833782, or return it to the band room any Monday evening. They estimate that over the years some six or more jackets have gone missing and todayÕs cost is £240 each. Please, if you think you know where one of these jackets is or have one gathering dust, dig it out and get in contact! Despite atrocious weather on 13th February, the Jovial Foresters Norton Wood Orchard Group managed to plant 10 fruit trees in record time (they did not want to get any wetter!) There were 6 Gloucestershire varieties of apples, 2 pear trees, a plum and a quince. Each tree was staked and surrounded by stock proof fence to protect them and then a mulch of rotted horse manure was added. A month later, in glorious sunshine, they were pruned (to encourage growth and healthy branches - it will be a year or so before the fruit can be cropped) and clearing redundant vegetation continued. The group also prepared a good stock of bean and pea poles which will be sold at the next Go Grow vegetable stall at the FarmersÕ Market. They meet every 2nd Sunday of the month from 2 to 4 pm and everyone is very welcome to join them. There is plenty for children to do as well. The contact is Marilyn Miles, Jovial Foresters/Norton Wood Community Orchard in Partnership with Nailsworth Town Council on 832974 or 07801 558931. Selling your surplus produce Go Grow will be at Nailsworth Farmer's Market on the 4th Saturday of each month through 2011. This year they aim to continue selling produce on behalf of any local gardeners, orchardeers and allotmenteers who have surplus to sell. They hope to improve on 2010 successes, building on the principle of 'local fresh produce for a local market' (preferably organic). Since the season is just beginning, surplus tools and coppice products, seeds and seedlings will all be welcomed, as well as fruit and vegetables and anything that assists the growing and availability of locally grown fresh produce. Do get involved, and pass on the news to any Nailsworth District growers who might like a small outlet for their surplus or to buy. Please contact Liz Child on 839107 or lizchild@ phonecoop.coop if you have surplus to sell. Or if you want to make a little extra for your organisation, let Liz know or bring price marked produce to the stall on Saturday morning. Go Grow is also happy to have your organisationÕs leaflets on the stall - or just come to meet up. Blossom-spotting walks If youÕre looking for an excuse to wander the lovely lanes and streets of Nailsworth this spring, why not help make a map of fruit trees in peopleÕs gardens and on public land? Go Grow Nailsworth Valleys is looking for people to take part in this project in order to highlight the abundance and varieties of local fruit that can be turned into delicious juice, pies, crumble and chutney in the autumn. Blossom spotters and participating fruit tree owners will be asked to complete a short survey to help identify the fruit and if possible the variety. These will be put onto a map, which should then show a network of trees. The plan is to then invite any willing fruit tree owners and volunteer harvesters to share the surplus and hold community apple pressings later in the year. This idea has come from the very popular community apple pressing held by Go Grow at OctoberÕs FarmerÕs Market, where apple tree owners were invited to bring along their fruit for pressing. At a time when food prices are rising, the project aims to share fruit which is often wasted due to tree owners not having the time or resources to deal with the glut. If youÕre interested in being a blossom spotter, mapper or are a fruit tree owner whoÕd like to take part please contact Katherine Kearns on 834530 or email katherine.kearns@ southglos.gov.uk. She was the 250,000th customer since Brutons incorporated a new computer system into their business 3 years ago, and she was awarded a £50 Voucher. The system helps BrutonÕs staff with controlling their stock of 20,500 different product lines which in turn enables them to have the right quantity of product at the right time. Manager Jamie Compton says: ÔWe deal with 40 different suppliers every month and would now be lost without this computerisationÕ. If what the customer requires is not in stock, a member of staff is able to browse the system to find the product and then order it for collection in a few days time. More often than not, it will be delivered to the shop within 24 hours. ÔWe just touch a picture button of the product required and there the order goes! It is a very easy and quick system to use and has been of a huge benefit in meeting our customerÕs requirements,Õ says Jamie. It raised £200 for the Nailsworth- Vumilia Link Tanzania. Well done! Fields CafŽ and Restaurant has reopened under new management. There are going to be some changes, including a new name, more details of which next month. Clobber has extended into the space previously occupied by Essence of Design and thereÕs been evidence of substantial refurbishment of their previous shop area. Too late for the Little People Company, but the curb-stones along the flood threatened frontage of Bridge Street have been replaced by curb pieces with drainage holes. Plans afoot for new ÔsingingÕ pub Nailsworth is rich in cafes, restaurants and bistros, but less well provided with the more old-fashioned type of Ôdrinking pubÕ. However, that looks set to change now that a French entrepreneur wants to set up a new hostelry for residents. RenŽ DÕAvril-Poisson plans to apply for a new pub to be licensed, and with a nod to the now-defunct Jovial Foresters he intends to call it the Jolly Nailsworthian. It will be a venue for local music. RenŽ explains, ÔThe idea of running a pub in your so quaint little town came to me when I was attending a Johnny Coppin concert. The audience joined in the choruses and I was stunned - people here mostly have excellent voices, and some know parts and harmonise. I thought, yes! thatÕs it! a pub where people can do community singing.Õ He has been looking over possible sites. ÔI wondered about offering to restore the WH Davies house, but there seemed too much work to be done and parking would be a problem. Then I considered Shortwood Church, but the atmosphere didnÕt seem right for barrels of beer. The old FGR community building was another possibility, but while I was taking photos of it one day, Mon Dieu! someone suddenly took it away! However, if the Police Service decides to sell their building in Market Street that would be ideal. We could build upwards or combine with the Library Building. This will be a community asset so I am sure planners would sympathise.Õ The Nailsworth News team wishes RenŽ all success. If he can make it work, then as a Ôhappy-clappyÕ bunch, we will be there joining in the singing on his opening night. We also propose that now is the time for Nailsworth to have its own Community Anthem. Our musical skills are limited Ð is there anyone out there who can help? Developments at Meaco Back in November 2004 we were reporting ESSÕs upcoming 20th anniversary and the formation of Meaco Woodwork Ltd who were establishing themselves in the Pensile Road property previously occupied by Nailsworth Garden Machinery. The scope of MeacoÕs activities has increased and they are now reorganising into four separate but related businesses. Meaco Picture Framers, the most recent addition (2008, operating in premises reached via the wrought iron gate into Nailsworth Mills Estates) will be run by John Meletiou and Paul Gray Ð who has run a successful business in Painswick. Meaco Woodwork, also run by John with Gianluca Corrado (pictured) will specialise in mirror frames for Overmantels of Battersea. The bespoke woodwork side of the business becomes GC Furniture and Joinery run by Gianluca. Gianluca can also be seen on his motorcycle (we should all get out more) as The Nailsworth Handyman offering a variety of services. Sent from March Villa, Leonard Stanley in 1903, it begins: ÔMy dear little boys, As we shall be leaving this house on the 16th inst. for one at Spring Hill, Nailsworth, I am gathering all the scraps of news about the wreck, thinking you will both be very much interested in them when you are older...Õ (Thank you Allan Beale for drawing this item to our attention.) Mystery local photograph Allan Beale from the Town Archives has sent us this print, which appeared on his desk one day. The original is tiny, and no-one knows where it came from. WeÕve done our best to enlarge it to reasonable quality, and now need your help. Can anyone tell us: ¥ Where is the place shown? ¥ What is the parade about? ¥ Who are the people parading? The archivists think that perhaps it is set in Forest Green near the junction of Hayes Road, with the field behind being where Churchill Road now is Ð but they are not sure. Please get in touch with Allan on 832605 if you can help with any information. Tank trouble Malcolm Hooper from Stroud has written to give us more information about the accident in Fountain Street in 1953, when a tank carrier overturned Ð featured in a recent photograph printed in this paper. He writes, ÔI was working in EastmanÕs Butchers Shop at that time, with my father, and I can remember it very well. There is a man in the photograph who I remember was carrying a case of Australian rabbits into the shop. I think that the accident happened at about 2 oÕclock, as we had just re-opened the shop. In those days all the shops closed between 1 and 2 oÕclock. This meant that there were hardly any people about, so there were no casualties.Õ Thank you, Malcolm. As an independent Charitable Trust, the Nursery is not run by the school, but it shares certain facilities such as the gym and garden. It succeeds superbly as an Ôearly years centreÕ and now after 6 months in its new purpose built environment it is an ideal place for young ones to learn and interact in safe, friendly and interesting surroundings. The last Ofsted inspection in 2007 awarded it an outstanding grading across all areas Ð high praise indeed. There is no segregation of ages (from 2 to rising 5Õs) and all children learn together under assigned key-workers who watch and educate each child along the way. Sue Bufton runs a happy and productive ship here, with the children learning through play indoors and in the garden. There are 50 on the register. Places are currently available for the September term, but are always keenly sought after. There is also a thriving Mothers and Toddlers group which meets every Tuesday in the Gym for childrenÕs play (9-11 am). This is a great chance for children to let off steam and for Mums (and Dads!) to have a social time with their children and adults alike over a coffee. Just turn up - no bookings needed. Please call Sue on 833511 to ask questions, request a tour of the facilities or register interest for your child. Horsley School Welcome to Term 4 at Horsley Primary and what a term! As daffodils start to appear, the school is blooming. The Horsley 3-in-1 project has now born fruit and we have a wonderful new hall in the Church (pictured on the right). The children were so excited going in and seeing the splendid space for the first time when they returned from the half-term break. It is magnificent, and has already made a huge difference to daily life in school. The installation of a new projector, purchased with money raised by community events in Horsley, will enable us to have a real focus for collective worship and other celebrations. Thanks to successful fundraising bids to the Summerfield Trust, St Matthias Trust and activities organised by the Friends of Horsley School, we are installing PE equipment and the other resources which will enable us to undertake all the activities that should happen in a school hall Ð art, dance, music, PE, drama, cooking and all aspects of the national curriculum. From 8.30 am to 4.30 pm every school day, we have exclusive access to allow us to achieve what has not been possible before. The place will also, in the evenings, be available for community use as well as maintaining its role as a Church in the heart of the community. It is a truly unique facility which all parties are so proud to share. We look forward to sharing the space with parents to showcase the talents of our children, from music to art, drama to gym as well as the special assemblies that the children work so hard to produce. Martin Fry, Headteacher St DominicÕs As I write, like many schools we find ourselves in a period of great change. To an extent this has been a continuous position for a number of years, but it is heightened by the changing face of the local authority. As central services cease to exist, schools are in the position of looking for alternative providers and solutions. We are a group of over 50 Primary Schools in the Stroud area that are developing stronger links and looking for opportunities to formalise collaborations. It is a time of immense change and huge opportunity and I am grateful for the fact that we in the Nailsworth area have always worked in a spirit of collaboration and support and continue to prioritise joint activities for the benefit of the children. Coming up in the summer, as well as our Mills project, the Cluster will be working on an art project led by a local artist and exhibited in Gloucester Cathedral. We will also continue to share our Ôgifted and talentedÕ provision, and plans are in place for our shared sporting activities. As well as our link with local schools, we also have links with an Inner City school in Gloucester, and Class 3 will be visiting this month. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the network of corridors and the many classes, not to mention the walk to the local church which will now take them past the hospital compared with just crossing over our road. I believe it will be an interesting experience for all concerned. Nailsworth CofE Primary It is funny how old sayings reappear when I least expect them. My Dad used to drop my brother and me at infant school and every time he would say ÔWork hard, play hard and be goodÕ. Well, life at school is very much like that at the moment as the children are working really hard, enjoying their themes; we have had some amazing sporting successes and the majority of little knocks on my door are from children who have reached the top of the Behaviour for Learning ladderÉin the last two terms we have had over 100 in each term come to see me. Below are some of our sporting successes. Netball Our Squad has qualified for District Finals... without conceding a goal! Fantastic achievement. Well done to all the squad and congratulations to their coaches Mrs King and Mrs Rosser. Cross Country Results This week we took part in the final races of the year, when all Primary schools from Stroud District run against each other around a long and hilly course at Stratford Park Leisure Centre. We had some amazing results and congratulations to all our runners; weÕre very proud of you. Vince Southcott, Headteacher ThereÕs a breathless hush in Nympsfield... The Ashes have been won, Spring is on the way, there is no footie world cup to follow this summer and the Olympics are a year off - so now is your chance to enjoy those balmy (or barmy) summer afternoons and evenings with the thrilling thwack of willow on leather. The Commoners Cricket season starts on Sunday 24th April and carries on until their 'famous' 8s Festival in late August. Commoners are the nearest that Nailsworth has to a cricket team (regrettably club cricket has not been played in Nailsworth for over 25 years.) Although they play at Nympsfield, the majority of the team live at or are associated with Nailsworth or the surrounding area. They play on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, with the emphasis on the games being played in the true spirit of cricket. All matches are ÔfriendlyÕ, but they play to win and then enjoy a pint with the opposition after the match. If you are interested in playing, helping or spectating please contact the skipper Simon Crampton on 07779 290076. They look forward to hearing from you! That is what the manager wants for the team to survive, but it is going to be very tight indeed. The dire performance v Barrow and not much better against Altrincham does not bode well for the future, but at least the draw v Newport provided some comfort. With the team lacking ideas and cohesion, things look very gloomy indeed. One can blame injuries Ôtill the cows come homeÕ, but that does not seem to be the problem. The supporters can see some evidence of sparkle, desire and team play. Big clubs are there to be played before the final table is realised and although we all hope for success, probably crossing every finger is going to be the best we can do just now. (What has happened to the ÔRockwell RoarÕ? The Barrow supporters sang their hearts out throughout their recent trip here). Shortwood United At Shortwood United though, things are continuing to look rosy. Yes, a few disappointing draws, but the goals are going in again and the wins are coming fast. It looks on course to be a good end to the season. John Evans is pleased that the team are passing the ball with more confidence and as a result of all the positive signs and encouraging play Shortwood will be at home to Bitton FC in the GFA Trophy semi final on Tuesday 5th April (7.45 pm). As from the 2011/12 season, Shortwood United will be selling season tickets that will cover all home league games for first team, reserve team, veterans teams and pre season friendlies. The cost for an adult will be £100, and for a senior citizen (over 60) and under 18s it will be £60. Please note that cup games are not included and season tickets are not transferrable. Entry forms are available at the Club, and can be emailed from shortwoodfc@pb00.orangehome.co.uk or jimcunneen1951@ btinternet.com. By the time you are reading this, the table tennis winter season will be over, either the Phoenix ÔBÕ or ÔAÕ team will be champions of division four, and the ÔAÕ team will have played in the final of the ÔAlbert MannÕ Cup. All in all, a very good season for Nailsworth. But they don't stop and rest! When other teams put their bats away until next September, Nailsworth Phoenix keeps on going all year round, including now practicing on Thursdays in addition to their regular slots. Phoenix is looking to start two more teams next season, so if you would like to play in the league or just have a social game and a bit of fun, now is the time to go along. You would be made very welcome. The club would also like to have more teams in the youth league next season, so why not learn some new skills and start the season with a bang? Nailsworth Phoenix play at the Nailsworth Subscription rooms (formerly the ÔBoys ClubÕ), and meet every Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. If you are interested in playing table tennis, at any age, please contact Andy Hammond on 885393 or visit the website www. nailsworthphoenix.co.uk for more details.
