Jinny-Mae Cook (18) worked at Claire Frances Hair Design until November 2014 when she was tragically killed in a car crash. Claire Uzzell and her staff at the salon wanted very much to remember and honour Jinny-Mae and all others who die so young and to have something erected where people can sit, look and think of positive things about those who we have lost in their tender years. Kim Frances created the sculpture and Claire and her staff raised the £6,000 needed with charity walks and mountain hiking, fashion shows, raffle prizes and more. An octogenarian ofNewmarket made a plea to SDC regarding the nuisance ofhis waste recycling. His property is on a very steep slope, not unusual in theNailsworth area as we all know. Unlike many, his car occupies the garage of the property and therefore a full sized wheelie bin could not be accommodated without obstructing his access. Our correspondent was somewhat perplexed as to whatto do with his Ônew grey binÕ which Òpartially obstructs my side entrance and the steps going to the first floor of mytown houseÓ. This he considered Òan access obstruction for the Postie and any other delivery personsÓ. Our gentlemanÕs main objection is that, as a lone pensioner, he has no chance of filling these containers to a quantity that makes collection seem practical compared withthe amount of waste his is producing. He adds that there are Community News The next Nailsworth Death Cafe will be on Thursday 29th September at the Canteen starting promptly at 7:30 and finishing around 9:30. We and SDC have sympathy for the situation and the latter have clarified what waste is to go intowhich bin for his edification and offered the following comment:- ÒWe are required to provide a refuse bin for each property, regardless of the number of peoplewho live in each one. For us to provide different sized bins based on the amount of waste a household produces, every time occupancy ina property changes we could findourselves swapping the bins inorder to suit the individual needs. The costs of providing this service would be significant and would ultimately fall on tax payers. Over the life of the collection contract we couldend up swapping thousands of bins as families get larger or smaller, when people move home or their circumstances change; this would not be an efficient use of the councilÕs resources.Ó Unarguable logic but . . . recyclable food for thought? It all began in a pub! Helen Brereton, a PATA worker, had a grant to start a playgroup in Nailsworth. Sally Reay (nee Martin), Annie Amos and Sheila Smith met with Helen and decided they could form a committee and Phoenix Playmateswas born. Their first base was the old library room in Highwood School. It was there that Peter Martin, Ricky Hudd, Kayleigh Freebury and Danielle Amos, to name but a few, became the first children to wear the green Phoenix uniform. Helen ran the group for two terms then left and Sue Buftonbecame the leader, a role she had for 23 years. Generations of children fondly remember their time with Mrs Bufton. At this point the group moved into the empty Stroud Art College rooms, in the same grounds as Highwood School. A Toddler group run by Alison Sykes was started. When Nailsworth Primary School moved to its present location, Mr. Bruce Hall (Head), managed to secure aterrapin building for theplaygroup. Thank you Mr. Hall! This remained home until 2010 when the school made available an area for Early Years within the present building. During the last 25 years at least 500 children have benefitted from the support of Phoenix Staff. The future looks really exciting. There is a new room for 2 year olds which is back in the old, now refurbished terrapin building, and a fantastic outside learning areas for all the children, sponsored by Lloyds Bank and Tesco. The group, called Phoenix Playmates Nursery, is a charity and over the years committee members, ie. parents, have worked tirelessly to raisefunds and support the staff. The current facilities are a credit to everyoneÕs hard work and commitment. On Saturday 24th September at 2pm, there will be a party to celebrate their 25th Anniversary, at the school. All children and families who are past and presentmembers of Phoenix are welcome to attend. Please goand join them to see the wonderful facilities and enjoyreliving the past. ÒVandalismÓ and Òpolice involvementÓ are words becoming too familiar toNailsworth citizens and I believe itÕs time to make this change. I would like to begin bysaying that I am appalled bythe allegations and if they areaccurate, I would like to expressmy shock and disappointmentthat some people in my age groupare letting our entire generationdown. As a community we rightly havelittle tolerance for disruption andunruly destruction by anyone, let alone teenagers and youngadults. However, I would also like to point out that only a smallminority of youths are involvedin these antics and the majorityof young people are perfectlyresponsible members of society. With chefs Nacho and Tiago, both with 2* Michelin restaurant experience, the food is of the highest quality - whether vegetarian, gluten free, vegan etc., it is all made on site with produce locally sourced or for ÔspecialsÕ from Bristol. To a total novice of such things, what would be suggested for an evening out? ÒPlates to share! Different plates, different dishes from starters to puddings - dive in and share! Always popular are the punchy Mediterranean dishes with strong favours - Tiger Prawns, Herefordshire flamenquitos, crispy filo black pudding parcels, octopus in olive oil and paprika and finished with an almond tart.Ó From the menu, it all looks superb! From noon onwards one can pop in and have a quick drink and lunch or in the evenings a Ôfine diningÕ experience with table service if needed in the spacious and atmospheric mezanine gallery. I saw some newly hatched loggerhead sea turtles make their way across the beach to the Atlantic ocean and was amazed at how such tiny creatures kept on heading to the water, even when the waves pushed them back up the beach again and again. Sometimes they were flipped on to their backs by the strength of the wave (it doesnÕt take a very big wave to do that when you are only about 5cm long). They waited until the next wave flipped them back over and then carried on. As the sun rose I watched as the last few finally disappeared into the sea. Those turtles are determined to get to the ocean. But just getting there can be a challenge. They can be disorientated by something as simple as a street light or they can be trapped by something as ordinary as the moat around a sandcastle. As I watched these tiny creatures literally heading into the unknown as the sun cleared the horizon I remembered MikeÕs story about the Grand Canyon (check your July issue of NN) and I thought how incredible it was that God created the majesty of the Grand Canyon and the tiny turtle I was looking at. Large or small, God has done an amazing job with His creation. And that includes me and you. And thatÕs a great thing to remember this September. Why? Well, we often jump into something new at this time of year. A new school year, perhaps a new school, or university, or experiencing an empty nest for the first time. Whatever new experience I might face this month I find it helpful to remember that the God who creates the large and the small, cares enough to stand with me, love me and is willing me to be like the turtle Ð determined to succeed. Have fun this September Ð whatever you are jumping into. Every blessing - Mike and Helene. Rev. The thought of needles at the GP or the dentist is often a major turn-off with people, but Si‰n Elias with her acupuncture surgery at the White Practice in Market Street is quite assured that there is nothing to worry about at all! Acupuncture uses the finest needles - slimmer than a hair, can hardly be seen and one does not feel a thing! What is acupuncture? The space here is too short to give a detailed summary of this science (google it or ask Si‰n). In short it is a form of Ôalternative medicineÕ and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine involving thinneedles inserted into the body at acupuncture points. It canbe associated with the application of heat, pressure, or laserlight to these same points. Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, though it is also used for a wide range of otherconditions.Õ Si‰n is a mother of two and for many years worked inLondon in media circles before returning home to this areaafter training as an acupuncturist at Reading. After many years of study she is now a full member of the British Acupuncturist Council. What brought her into this field? Too much insomnia and little results from traditional medicines made her try anything -acupuncture worked! Si‰n decided to research this science and become fully qualified to help others. There will be those who question acupuncture - Si‰n is very Nailsworth made history last month, with a resounding ÔYesÕ vote in the Referendum for a Community Right to BuildOrder. This will allow 10 affordable homes for rent to be built at the bottom of Lawnside, and for the ÔRight to BuyÕ to be removed. This means the homes will remain the propertyof the Nailsworth Community Land Trust for ever, and they will be let to people with a Nailsworth connection first. The CLT has over 200 members who are all local residents or workers. They have arranged for houses to be built and managedby Aster Homes, a Housing Association. There is no cost to the town, the fundingcomes from some grant money, and the rental income. The CLT opted for homes to rent, rather than Ôstarter homesÕ to buy because after the first purchase the latter would just belike any other house, sold at market rates andno longer low cost for Nailsworth residents. If youÔd like to be considered as a tenant forone of the homes you will need to be on theGloucestershire Homeseekers Plus list. www.gloshomeseeker.co.uk open to this and knows full well that not always will patients be cured oftheir problems - she makes thisquite aware from the start of anyconsultation. Although Si‰n deals mainlywith womenÕs well-being, she also has a large number of men on her books for all sorts of ailments dealing less withskeletal issues but more physical and mental health matters. Si‰n works with local GPs in Nailsworth and the area but also works in the White Practice twice a week. Nailsworth Farmers Market - Fresh and Local! N N AILSWORTH MARKET began in the year 2000. This was as the FarmersÕ Market; a means to support local farmers and small industries to promote and sell their wares. Based in the Mortimer Gardens it has never ventured from this central and easily accessible spot. Through wind and shinethe Market has never failed though it hasexperienced its ups anda few downs. A few years ago it changed its name to itspresent one due to thefact that the Market wanted to be open to more opportunities than just local farmers! A A part from cheeses and meats, eggs, preserves, bread and vegetables, the Market sells plants and flowers, cards, upholstery, blacksmith works, home made pies, wood carving, picture frames and much more. Everything is of the highest quality and the Marketeerstake great pride in what they produce and sell. After all, their livelihoods depend on it! T T he area is compact and homely and allows for between16 and 22 stalls depending on space required. Onaverage there are a dozen stalls in use covering all sorts of crafts, foods and other goods. A stall (with canopy) costs only a mere £20.00 (electricity is a bit extra) and this has to be a good deal - the chanceto have quality goods on show and for sale with so muchpassing footfall. For 4 hours trading at £5.00 an hour? Notbad! I I t is important that both local traders and the communitysupport each other at the Nailsworth Market. The Market needs more regular traders to make a realimpact each month and be a basis to show confidence and show what Nailsworth can gainfrom the trades. Charity & CommunityCharity & Community Tracy Payne is organizing a fund raising event forChildren With Cancer UK. Her passion to undertake this beganin memory of her father, Roger Marshall, who passed away in 2014. Roger was a charity worker himselfand was voted ÔNationÕs Best SantaÕ in 2013. Roger appeared on television in recognition of his achievements as a Santa and a charity worker. He was also responsible for turning on the Stroud Christmas lightson several occasions. Tracy lives in Nailsworth and wanted to carry on the legacy of his love of children but quoted Òalas I look nothing like SantaÓ. Shedecided to help children to combat cancer which is something thatshe feels would have made her father very proud. She started with selling on a Facebook page, selling her own itemswith resulting monies going to charity. This quickly escalated and she now has 250 members who buy and donate their own itemsevery week. So far Tracy can be congratulated on raising £3,000. After a slow start with voluntary donations for her Novemberauction event, Tracy was a little despondent, but hadnÕt banked on the generosity of local businesses. They took a little time to digest her plea, and then gave generously. The event has now received some 39 donated prizes (at time ofgoing to press), but Tracy is very keen to receive more if there is anyone able and kind enough to donate for this worthy cause. The event is taking place at the end of November. Tracy regrets that the venue can only hold some 150 people. These spaces are reserved as a Ôthank youÕ for members of her selling page whom she is hoping to reward with food and activities followed by theauction of the generous gifts given. If you have been touched by this article then Tracy would love to receive more donations of prizes. All donators will be named in a special programme at the event and on social media afterwards. email: mdpayne1982@gmail.com Churches TogetherNeil Carmichael, Stroud MP, met over 40 people at a public meeting organised by Churches Together in Nailsworth during July. On the way to have haircuts at Mucky Pups in Nailsworth, these King Charles cavalier spaniel cross miniature poodle or ÒcavapooÓ had a good look around the shop before enjoying a dog biscuit on the way out. Tilly likes to be carried when sheÕs tired and sulks when sheÕs been naughty and is told off. This pair like to sit next to the sewing machines and watch as their owners stitch away. Perhaps they are getting some ideas to run up a creation for the forthcoming Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home Fashion Show. This was followed by a sumptuous buffet supper with a magnificent cupcakebirthday cake just to finish things off! George came to Nailsworth in the early 1980s - he vaguely knew of the area after narrowly missing Haresfield Church in 1940 whenon a training flight in his Blenheim bomber. Severe burns, a time in Gloucester Hospital and then a survivor of the ÔDÕ Day Landings in1944, George helped build advanced landing strips for the Allies as their armies marched east to Berlin. In time, after the War and his playing of bowls in Middlesex, hejoined NMBC in 1985 and was its Treasurer from 1987 to 1991. He was a regular winner of Club competitions and has still been very active in the NMBC League teams and in other matches. In the winter he has run an indoor Bowls team at the Cotswold IndoorBowls Club. To chat to George is a real privilege, not just about his War experiences (of which there are many) but also of times past both here and further afield, and he looks no older than 70. Remarkable! Amberley Community Choir (having several Nailsworth members) tookpart in a massed choir event recently andheld a fund raising concert in the parishrooms beforehand to raise money for Water Aid. This was very well attended and throughthe generosity of its supporters raised£2,400 which was double its target! The Nailsworth Guides has also celebrated 100 years in Nailsworth (as featured inthe July Centre Spread) and a wonderful gatheringof 80 past and present Brownies and Guides had acelebration Tea Party at the Sawyer Hall. Tabletopdisplays of photographs and diaries, some goingback to 1920, were on show. There was also a quick rendition of bellringing from one suchgroup which learnt thisskill some years back. He can now come and go to Russia as part of the Award he was recently given at the Russian Embassy for his work in WW2. This was in ÔOperation DervishÕ where he, and thousands of British and allied seamen sailed convoy after convoy in the Arctic Sea from Britain to Archangel and other ports in the northern Soviet Union. Nazi Germanywas tryingto blockade Norway andRussia from Allied naval support - thousands of men died inthese convoys which were trying to break throughand deliver vital supplies for the war effort. Over 8,000 Allied sailors lost their loves in this dangerous and appalling exercise. Ken received the ÔMedal of UshakovÕ as RussiaÕs means of honouring his (and otherÕs) commitment and bravery in what many described as Ôthejourney of hellÕ. Ken made many missions to Russia from 194445 for the Merchant Navy and survived to tell thetale and even later survived a torpedo attack whilstserving off Benghazi in North Africa. If Ken makes a trip to Russia, he has promised tosend a postcard! One Friday in summer, Forest Green Residents Association ran an afternoon when pots were made, leaves were pressed, seeds were planted and beesbuzzed in the background. A total of 22 children enjoyed the activities creating a lovely atmosphere. Opening of new Glass Canopy at the Nailsworth Subscription Rooms The Nailsworth Subscription Rooms are proud to announce the opening of their beautiful new glass and wood canopy and entrance area at the front of the building. This was largely made possible with a £10,000 grant from The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust. The main structure has now been completed. As well as improving the appearance, this project has improved the energy conservation of that part of the building, securing the opening against weather, and improving security. The new porch and its surrounds will Ôtie the building togetherÕ as its design has been made to match the new doors and slope of the roof of the workshop. An official opening is planned for early autumn. Les Haines, one of a group of Trustees of Nailsworth Youth and Community Enterprise who run the building on behalf of the community said, Ò This is the second time in recent years that The Gloucestershire Evironmental Environmental Trust has willingly stepped in to help fund our major renovation and modernisation programme. The old front entrance area was unsightly and spoiled the look of our landmark building. Now we have something to be proud of and it has already led to many favourable comments from visitors and passers-by.Ó Access for the disabled has also been improved recently. Internal access to the Community Workshop, which occupies the lower ground floor, now has a wheel chair ramp and also a stair lift to the closest toilet. This new build is part of a project to modernise the Subscription Rooms, making it fit for purpose and aiming to provide facilities for education, in particular but not exclusively for young people resident in Nailsworth and the surrounding area. After consultation with the community, the Nailsworth Youth and Community Enterprise now has space available for a range of activities including; table tennis, yoga, circus skills, badminton, musical events, dances, harp orchestra and exhibitions. The Community Workshops held here are very popular and include ÔmenÕs shedÕ, upholstery, English longbowmaking, wood production workshops, wood, stained glass and leatherwork classes and courses. Sessions for home educated children also occur twice a week. For more information, please visit www.glos-environment-trust.co.uk For more information on The Subscription Rooms, Nailsworth Youth and Community Enterprise and the opening of the canopy please visit www.nailsworthsubrooms.org.uk Shortwood United - It always takes a bit of time to get a new squad together and Alex Sykes in his first solo role as manager has had to juggle with new players and get them to fit in quickly. It was huge shame that ShortwoodÕs first game was a real thumping from Taunton on a classic summerÕs afternoon. It was also a shame that so many first team players were unavailable for the season opener leaving a team to start with less experience at this level than was hoped. The result could have been different but for some poor finishing and finding that killer through-pass - that will come with practice. The visit of Hereford was a major triumph for Shortwood - the result was another thumping to a quality team, but the hospitality laid on to hundreds of away supporters was very well received and many said that they had Ônever been treated so well on the roadÕ - brilliant!! The season is yet young and there will be mountain to climb (again) as Sykes and the new team find their feet, but the signs are there. The recent defeat in the very early stages of the FA Cup was not good, either as a result or a performance and things will have to be sorted soon before it is too late to be amongst the league front-runners. Based on what the Wood has to offer, it is very possible. Shortwood has a fine reputation of bringing in quality youngsters and looking after them - Nathan Marks (18) at right back looks a really promising young player with pace and vision and in goal (on loan for the season) is Rhys Lovett from Cheltenham Town FC. With the depth of experience and the nurturing of new youngsters, the season will be another fine and exciting one. Community & Sport Rio 2016 - It already seems sometime ago now butit is only right andproper to honour andacknowledge the GoldMedal of Peter Reed in the Rio Olympics2016. After 2 Gold Medals in the last 2 OlympicGames we have perhaps become alittle blasŽ about our ÔNailsworth BoyÕ. We have the gold postboxes and probably think little about their meaning now - but, PeteÕs achievement is truly remarkable. Moving up from a MenÕs Coxless Four to the Eights Team is quite something but to win that as well aftera season of having yet to win is evenmore amazing! PeteÕs enthusiasm is there as ever - ÒItÕs times like these that you think you can do this for ever É I donÕt want this to be the end. I feel as strongas I have ever been.Ó Whether Pete gets to Tokyo, only time and discussions with the RoyalNavy will decide, but we all keep our fingers crossed. Sport Commoners Eights - Typical! A glorious summer and hardly a drop of rain for weeks and then the Annual Eights and at 4pm a nasty storm drifts up theSevern and washes the day away. Never mInd - dozens of cricketers and followers enjoyed the hours of cricket beforehand - the BBQ was as excellent as ever and the beer tent made some useful money too for club funds. According to the Duckworth-Lewisformula (does anyone actually understandthis?) the title of Eights Champions wentto The Commoners - well done, though few remember seeing any runs scoredthrough the drizzle! That is great news for both the faithful and the doubtful. By the showing against Southport on Bank Holiday Monday when FGR thumped them 5 - 1 (and it could have been many more) it was another high tempo performance and for 70 minutes the team was pretty good to watch as well! But, it has taken a bit of time to get to this stage and fair enough, with a predominantly new squad which has to get used to working new systems and understanding new roles, it has been a little uncertain for us fans to deal with. Claims from the hierarchy that the team deserved the wins against Gateshead and York (very late goals on both occasions and one was a sheer fluke) did not fall easily on the ears of the regulars - FGR did get wins but were hardly the better side on each occasion - in fact they were lucky not to lose both games! Until recently, defenders and midfield enjoyed plenty of possession but there was no forward cut and thrust for the strike force - it was quite depressing! If we can have more Ô70 minutes of outstanding footballÕ on a regular basis, then the fans will be happy and the goodwill will feed to a wider audience - simple really! Look out for Chemial - classy winger with loads of ability and in defence Pinnock - calm and assured. Tubbs and Moore now seem to be hitting it off up front too, and Noble and Robert pushing all the buttons, there is much good to watch from many of the team now.
