1 We salute Mark The Nailsworth News team is taking this opportunity to join all the many local people who have already paid their respects to Lance Bombadier Mark Chandler, who died in Afghanistan under enemy fire in June. Our thoughts are with MarkÕs family and friends as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of this fearless soldier, comrade and son who has been described as Ôa brave and committed manÕ, Ôtotally selfless to the very endÕ and Ôthe man that men aspire to be.Õ Our deepest sympathies to all those who are mourning his loss. Local running star Dan Robinson was spotted at the starting post, though since he was in flip-flops it was clear he was supporting the runners rather than going to the top himself this time! Nailsworthies A free monthly newspaper for the parish of Nailsworth Jenny Conduit and Carol Broughton Jenny and Carol met for the first time at a Probus meeting in Nailsworth five years ago. They soon discovered that, as teenagers, they had experienced remarkably similar roles which had engaged them in highly secretive wartime work. Jenny (right of the picture) joined the WRNS when she was 18, and was one of a selected few who were posted to Stanmore. After having signed the Official Secrets Act, she was trained to intercept enemy messages which had been sent using the Enigma Code, which was then thought by the Germans to be unbreakable. For this task, she worked on enormous machines known as ÔBombes.Õ The messages were then sent on to Bletchley Park, where they were successfully deciphered, giving advance warning of enemy manoeuvres. Messages came in thick and fast, and speed was of the essence; everyone was expected to work around the clock. And all the time, it was impossible for Jenny to disclose her role to friends and family. It was a severe test of willpower not to spill the beans. Carol (left of the picture) joined the WRNS when she was only 17. Following her clandestine specialist training, she volunteered for overseas service to escape the freezing British weather. When she boarded the troopship Stratheden at Liverpool, her destination was still a secret. Via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea she arrived at Bombay, where she was transferred to another ship to reach her final destination, Colombo. At her jungle unit, Japanese coded messages were intercepted and translated by Japanese-speaking WRNS. These messages were then decoded on a TypeX machine similar to the Enigma machine. In very humid heat, staff worked in ÔWatchesÕ through day and night, to the accompaniment of croaking frogs and the drone of flying insects. Following the war, Jenny and CarolÕs lips remained sealed. It was only when the 30 year secrecy ban was lifted that they were able to disclose their important roles in this extraordinary wartime mission. Even their husbands were not privy to the information until then. Jenny and Carol often reminisce and share memories of their time in the WRNS. Civic affairs Town MayorÕs Report Nailsworth was saddened by the news of the death of Lance Bombardier Mark Chandler in Afghanistan. It really brings home the reality of the war when a soldier from the town dies so tragically. All our thoughts are with MarkÕs family at this sad time. The end of May and June have been full of community activities - the Nailsworth Festival, Newmarket Fete and the Nailsworth Games, to name but a few. Well done to all those who have worked extremely hard to make these events so successful. The Town Council has now gone out to tender for the Market Street Corner Garden, so we should soon see this project starting to take shape. It is expected to greatly enhance the entrance to Market Street. Also, money from the ÔBunnyÕ Arkell Bequest is due to be used to implement improvements to the skate board park which the ÔboardersÕ have been requesting for some time. Many people are still unhappy regarding the problem of speeding traffic on Spring Hill and Nympsfield Road. Perhaps a Ôbuild-outÕ could be considered to slow the vehicles? I would be pleased to hear from anyone in the community who would like to comment on such a scheme, or who has any other suggestions. Steve Robinson, 834270, robinsons@fsmail.net. Help improve health in our town Can you spare some time to make the Nailsworth area a healthier and happier place? If so, you are invited to the next meeting of the Nailsworth Health Partnership, on Tuesday 6th July at 7.30 pm. It will be held at the Nailsworth Natural Health Centre in George Street. The Nailsworth Health Partnership is an exciting new project in which members of the community along with NHS and complimentary health professionals will be working together to promote local health. A variety of enthusiastic people interested in the health of our community are needed, to bring ideas, skills, and experience of illness and health. For instance, the partnership wants to launch a newsletter and later a website, so the hunt is on for designers, writers, printers, and people who would like to contribute with articles and help with organisation or distribution. Built in the 1850s, it worked at Stanley Mill until the 1980s. Hours of work by skilled volunteers (with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund) mean that it is now functional again. When this type of machine was originally introduced, it shrank cloth so effectively that it consigned noisy fulling hammers to history. The people of Nailsworth must have been delighted, since before that they woke to the thump of hammers six days a week. Now the Stroudwater Textile Trust can demonstrate both the original noisy technology (for which Stroud is famous) and this quiet replacement, whose working principles are still in use today. There is much local inventiveness to celebrate at Dunkirk Mill. The milling machine was of course a Ferrabee, from the inventive family that established Phoenix Ironworks, the birthplace of the lawnmower. Besides the milling machine, there is also a working Ferrabee waterwheel and a shearing machine. See all this, and more at Dunkirk Mill on the first and third weekend of each month, Bank Holiday Mondays or the last Wednesday of the month between 2 and 4 pm. Children aged under 8 go free. But go back to 1820 and the picture was very different. Nailsworth was at the start of its growth as a local trading centre. Records show that the town then had: ¥ 3 drapers ¥ 1 dressmaker ¥ 3 hat and bonnet makers ¥ 1 ironmonger ¥ 1 tallow-chandler ¥ 2 watch and clock makers ¥ 1 printer ¥ 1 bookseller ¥ 1 hairdresser. This list throws an interesting light on the social history of the town. A tallow-chandler? the advent of gas, and then electricity, would have hit that trade. Three hat and bonnet- makers? What luxury! The ladies of Nailsworth are not so well catered for in the 21st century, but is it too late? An outbreak of bonnet-wearing would certainly change the look of the townÕs streets (and would men take to wearing hats again also? Toppers, even?) It is interesting that there was a bookseller in 1820. Apparently even then, when literacy was less widespread than now, this town had a reading public. Of the more usual country crafts only a shoemaker and a cooper were recorded in 1820. However, by the mid 19th century, craftsmen - particularly shoemakers, blacksmiths, and carpenters, were fairly numerous in the town, and the number of shopkeepers was increasing. Of the professions, a surgeon was first recorded in 1820 Ð one wonders how people coped with illness before that time! - and a solicitor was established in the town by 1856. If youÕve noticed a woman of a certain age standing transfixed in the ironmongers, Mona Lisa smile playing around her lips, it was probably me - sniffing. I was relishing a smell that takes me right back to the shed at the bottom of my childhood garden. IÕve rooted around in these thrilling shops all over the world from Chiang Mai to Alaska, under cover in Tehran, and never been disappointed. Those of you who share this addiction will understand. Returning with my backpack weighed down, I gloat over my spoils: wooden spoons, clever little widgets or gadgets - once a terrifyingly sharp Thai cooking knife (imagine getting that past security today). And how could I forget staggering home from New Mexico with a rucksack filled to the brim with tiles for the kitchen? So was it the stunning scenery, free parking, friendly folk, and a plethora of independent traders that drew me back to Nailsworth after 19 years in Pitchcombe? Or was it the fact that we have two of the best ironmongers I have ever encountered right here in my new home town? How many other places can you buy a half a dozen gripper nails, or 9 seed potatoes - three earlies, three mid season and three late (Nailsworth Ironmongers) or pelleted lion poo to keep the badgers off my vegetables (Brutons)? Good relationships have already been forged with Tanzanian local government and village elders, and Ian Lever, a local agriculturist, who has visited the area 3 times, is a knowledgeable contact. Jo tells us that she feels a great sense of excitement and responsibility about the part she will play in helping to cement the Nailsworth Link when she will be visiting Tanzania in August/September. Another local resident is concerned that the playground and surrounding areas of King George V playing fields have been scarred with broken bottles and shards of glass recently. Paths were cleared and spaces made around fruit trees and along hedgerows, which were disappearing into swathes of cow parsley, nettles and buttercups. The main aim of the day was to put up the two bee boxes for Mason and Bumble bees. The boxes came from The Global Bee Project, paid for by a grant from CSV Action Earth (which is supported by Morrisons Supermarkets.) This is part of a nationwide campaign to improve biodiversity and tackle climate change. Red Kite seen over Nailsworth The red kite is an elegant bird of prey with a very long, deeply forked tail and whitish head. Catergorised as 'near threatened', it is rarely seen in our country. For many years this birdÕs only UK breeding places were in mid- Wales, but since the early 1990Õs red kites have been successfully reintroduced to many UK sites such as the Chilterns. We are delighted that one was recently seen over Nailsworth, and hope for more sightings, (As this paper was going to press an excited message came in from one of the NN team, ÔI just saw a red kite, it flew not more than 20 feet over my head!Õ ) WANTED - local hedgehog warden! Did you know that hedgehogs are dying out at a rate of about a fifth of their population every four years? In 2008 Annie Parfitt set up a hedgehog hospital near Brimscombe in response to this news, and she and her team of volunteers have been working and raising money ever since. They have established sheds to treat injured, sick, underweight and orphaned hedgehogs and hoglets, and have been able to save many before releasing them into the wild again. Now Annie wants to raise awareness locally and find out more about local hedgehog populations. She is seeking a volunteer in each village to become a 'Hedgehog Warden.' Please contact her on 886424 if you are interested. The Hedgehog Hospital would also love help from a volunteer carpenter with a few hours spare. Stephen Earley reflects on music and worship In these times of recession we seem to have rediscovered in our country a love of singing and dancing, if the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent on the TV are any yardstick. Is it only a matter of time before a new Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are discovered and remakes of some of the classics appear on the silver screen in a new guise? Not to mention the series of programmes to discover a new Maria for the Sound of Music, Joseph for the title role and recently Dorothy for the Wizard of Oz. Through these programmes, many well- known songs are dusted off and given new life and a new audience to listen to them - and I haven't mentioned ÔGleeÕ yet, which revived Lulu's hit ÔTo Sir with LoveÕ as the second series ended. Very few of us will get to audition or appear in one of these shows - but there are opportunities much closer to home. We always welcome new voices for our choir at St George's and I would love to have a worship group made up of singers and musicians to lead some of the modern hymns and choruses at less traditional services. For many years, churches have been places where peopleÕs singing and musical skills have been nurtured and encouraged, and it would be wonderful to hear the sound of people honing such skills in our church. So if there is anyone who feels they have a dormant or neglected gift of music that they would like to use, do please contact me on 832181. We are halfway through a 6 week trial of running Messy Church at the Forest Green Community Centre on a Thursday between 4.30-5.30 pm for children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and their parents. Do go and see what is happening - on the 1st, 8th or 15th July - before it is too late. It's better if you don't wear your Sunday best! The clue is in the title... Jenny Bailey on The Poor Clares at Woodchester Members of the Franciscan order of The Poor Clares, now in their 150th anniversary year, have been at their convent in South Woodchester (pictured below) since 1860. At that time, they ran an orphanage and school alongside their contemplative life of Praise, Petition and Thanksgiving. The building was designed by Charles Hansom. When St. DominicÕs Primary School was built in 1884 the convent school closed, and later old- style orphanages were no longer required. However, evening classes were held for mill-girls in the three Rs, sewing and embroidery. Boys were also taken at the school. The Poor Clares do not own the house or land, which belong to the Diocese of Clifton. They used to earn a living baking altar breads alongside their contemplative life. The school building was adapted as a guest house after it closed. It is now a day conference centre called The Quiet Place and is available to groups seeking a tranquil atmosphere for a day of prayer or discussion. In keeping with their tradition, the sisters continue to make cards and practice handicrafts. There is an opportunity to meet them at a bring and share picnic in Convent Lane, South Woodchester, on 4th July 12-4 pm. A donation of £1 is suggested. We found out about the landscape, the way of life and the amazing homes of the Nomads in the countryside, called gers (yurts in Russian). After visiting a yurt in a garden in Horsley we made realistic models of our own, using the same materials and techniques. Introduction The idea of making our yurts (or gers, as the people of Mongolia call them) came from our teacher, Miss Jamfrey. First, we learned about what life was like in Mongolia (which was quite a good move on Miss JamfreyÕs part if you ask me) so that we could decide what facilities we would include in our yurts, such as an outdoor lavatory to ensure privacy, or a guard dog. The second thing that we did was quite a challenge, but also quite fun, since we got to go on an interesting website that lets the user look around a virtual Mongolian yurt. We also had an amazing time having a look around a real yurt which was quite inspiring. So the next step? Making our gers. By Dylan Craven Y6 Making the felt covering for our yurts In Mongolia the conditions can be harsh, so the nomads need a covering to keep out the elements. They use felt. We were trying to make the yurts as realistic as possible so we made some felt of our own. There were several stages to making the felt covering for our yurts. First we had to lay the sheepÕs wool down in wisps on some fabric. We had to lay the wisps first horizontally and then vertically, so that the fibres could catch on to each other more easily. Then we sprinkled warm water and soap over the wool to help attach the fibres. Next we rubbed gently, getting faster and putting more pressure on. This joined the fibres completely and made the felt. If the felt got too dry, we added more soap and water and if it got too wet we squeezed some out. When it was felted enough we rinsed it and hung it up to dry. Done! By Zuleika Frost, Year 5 Local youngsters get nomadic For the second time this year, we are giving over the centrespread of the Nailsworth News to a team of schoolchildren. This time it is Horsley School that is being featured. Less than a mile from Nailsworth, the school takes a considerable number of children from our town, and the Headmaster Martin Fry sends regular reports to this paper. We are pleased to bring you this example of the childrensÕ work. Initial drawings ÔIt was really nice working with someone good at putting up with my mad ideas who was brilliant at teamwork. Together we created what weÕd set out to do.Õ Zuleika Y5 ÔWhilst some bits were easy, we realised that even though quite a few of the parts were hard to put together, the end result is always something to be proud of.Õ Angus Y5 Making the felt to cover the gers 12 Making our yurts The first thing we did was the most time consuming. Making the lattice. We used ice cream sticks for this and the largest used over 30 sticks! We used thin wire for this and later on some of us strengthened them with hot glue. The second stage was the roof. We used sharp cocktail sticks and blue tack to create our roof structures. To connect our cocktail sticks at the top we used circles of cardboard to create a ÔcrownÕ. Then we created an impression of canvas by sewing on our homemade felt. Finally if we had spare time we added small things like beds. By Zak Knight Y5 Conclusion Overall most of the class enjoyed the challenges and satisfactions of building the gers. Although a lot of the groups found the lattice very difficult, everyone was then extremely relieved when they completed it, and proud that theyÕd overcome the difficulties. Teamwork was obviously important, as many of the groups worked faster and better when they communicated and helped each other more. The sight of all the gers sitting in our classroom was absolute proof that everyone had tried their absolute best. By Megan Stuart Y6 Making the lattice for the walls ÔI really enjoyed making my ger because it was very creative and it involved many different skills. We did come across some difficulties but we overcame them with good teamwork and we helped each other solve them.Õ Harry Y6 ÔI loved working on my Ger because it was challenging. I think our felt roof worked well because we sewed it together.Õ Ross Y6. (With our grateful thanks to staff and children at Horsley School for all their hard work in preparing this feature.) Hereward Corbett has taken a 15 year lease on what was Edward Jones Financial services office alongside Mortimer Gardens. ÔBookshops come and go in NailsworthÕ, Hereward says, Ôbut this time theyÕre here for the durationÕ. At the start only the front part of the building will be open, but look out for some distinctive features in terms of shelving and dŽcor. Louis Inesor, familiar to customers from the previous location will continue to be the ÔBook Seller.Õ Later what was the back office will also be opened as ÔshopÕ. The shop will be doing considerably more business than before, with school ordering and delivery. and this will be handled from the basement. ItÕs dry there and can be warm, but itÕs never going to be a customer friendly place. The school business partly stems from the month long Ôbook festivalÕ they staged in May which was a great success. There were 30 odd ÔeventsÕ, one or two failures, but quite a number of sell-outs to balance. Hereward plans a repeat next year but with a more compact formula; a week centred on Nailsworth and a second week centred on Tetbury. It will be in May again but coordinated with the Nailsworth Festival. So the good news is that we have again a ÔconventionalÕ bookshop in Nailsworth and one that plans to be a permanency. Sadly, we only have the pleasure of Year 6 for another few weeks. They have met the challenges of being head of the school with great distinction and they are all ready and raring to go to their chosen secondary school. We wish them the very best for their next adventure. The noise has finally stopped and we are at the stage where every day there are significant changes to the building. The work is ahead of schedule, which means children in Reception and Key Stage 1 will return in September to newly refurbished extra large classrooms. The teachers are excited by the new opportunities these rooms bring to the way the children learn, especially the ease of access to dedicated outside learning areas. We are privileged to have such a fantastic integrated learning environment for children from the age of 2 to 7 years. Please come and visit or look out for our open day next September. We are currently working with the Gloucestershire Diocese to create a development plan to refurbish and change the rest of the school and the grounds to meet the needs of the children and our themed curriculum. This is important to give us the best chance of accessing the funding required. Our Governors are keen to start contacting trusts, charities and other organisations and would appreciate help from anyone who has expertise in fund-raising. Our summer fete will be held on Saturday 10th July, 11 am - 2 pm. There will be loads of stalls, events and fun for all. I hope to see you there. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer and look forward to the start of another academic year. Vince Southcott, Head Summer at St Dominics As I write, I am still flushed with the achievement of having completed the trapeze on our PGL residential trip last month Ð and equally, I still shake with fear when I consider what that involved! There were no such concerns for the children I am sure, who all experienced success and managed to have a wonderful weekend (with no rain for the first time in seven years!) Money week, when the children progressively learn about economic issues, took place at the end of June. SATs tests are also now completed and we await the results whilst preparing for the end of term production plus many other events. This year the children will be performing Wind in the Willows on the evenings of 14th and 15th July. Please contact us on 832682 if you would like to come along. Other events this term will be our Class 1 trip to the seaside, which is always a favourite and includes donkey rides for those who wish to have a go. Our Year 6 children will soon all be moving on to their secondary schools for induction days. This is an amazing time of year, when you see the Year 5 children ÔovernightÕ take on the mantle of Year 6 and step into that role of responsibility. The school/parish fete will be on Saturday 10th July from 12:00 am Ð 3:00 pm. Anyone is invited but we could do with a few more of the younger generation and also more ladies, as we have to make our own tea at present! (that should stir them up!) For more information please visit www.nailsworthphoenix.co.uk. (I think I have an ancient rusting Teasmade in my garage that these poor thirsty men could have, if they can work out how to switch it on, of course! Ed.) Commoners Eights In the ancient art of cricket, you will have heard of a four and a six - but a twelve? To see just how difficult it is to score one, come to the Commoners Eights on Sunday 22nd August at Nympsfield. This is NailsworthÕs Cricket Club. While you are there, enjoy real ale or your favourite beverage, good food (including tasty vegetarian items), home- made cakes and a lot more. And for your information, around a thousand runs were scored in the 2009 Eights but only one twelve. Four local teams of eight play eight, eight over matches of eight balls an over (hence the Commoners Eights!) It is always a great day out, starting at 10 am and finishing around 7 pm. The Commoners are packed with stars from Nailsworth and need all the support that you can give them to wrest the cup from their arch rivals Minchinhampton. It is great entertainment - a very happy and family atmosphere and even the dogs enjoy meeting everyone and picking up leftovers from the grass. Now that is perfect recycling! For more details contact Don Luke on 832812. Please send your website details Do you want your team / club more in the limelight? In order for everyone to keep in touch with local activities, it would be good if teams, clubs and societies could email their websites to us, at editor@nailsworthnews.org so that we can publish these sites on a regular basis and keep everyone involved. Tennis, Football, Judo, Cricket, Table Tennis, Bowls, Bungy-Jumping, Pidgeon Racing, Badminton, Skittles - you name it, we want to hear about it! Then come along to a session of the Cotswold Allrunners. The club was founded in March 2009 by a group of 20 local runners who had been meeting regularly through the winter. With two Nailsworth runs a week, professional coaching on hand, and support for both beginners and more experienced runners, there really is something for everyone. If you are interested and are 18 or over, then get out your running shoes and come along to one of the Nailsworth sessions. They are held Wednesdays and Fridays from 6.15 pm, and start at the King George V Playing Field (beginners, you should turn up at 5.45). Once you have got into the swing of it, there are plenty of events on offer for those who like a challenge. To find out more, contact the club on membership@carun.org, ring Dave on 07875 336 779 or Simon on 07939 102 102, or visit the excellent website at http://www.carun.org. Farewell to EnglandÕs World Cup hopes So thatÕs the World Cup over for England for another four years. There will be no more nail-biting matches, although at least in the end we were beaten by a worthy opponent, and there is the European Championship in 2012 to look forward to. Nailsworth did its best to support the team. Cars, houses and shop windows have been all a-flutter with red and white, as you can see in this collage (these snaps were all taken in local shops), and we thought that the bread was a particularly ingenious display. www.ITformy.co.ukHome technology problems? Thanks, everyone... Mary Blunt has written to ask us to pass on her thanks to all those who supported the Cream Tea event as Shortwood Football Club on 23rd May. She also sends a big thank you to those traders in our town who donated items for the raffle and to the Football Club for their support. ÔWe were blessed with wonderful weather, which was a bonus. The total raised was £694.59 which has been sent to the Sue Ryder Care Hospice at Leckhampton in memory of my husband.Õ Local Hero I would like to share with readers the wonderful service I received at Brutons last month when my car key battery died. Not only did they fit a new battery for me, but a member of staff also came all the way to my car (which was parked at the Town Hall) and activated the key for me - as I had found that it did not work and did not know how to fix it. I was most impressed! - Mrs Angie Ayling (A little detective work revealed that the name of Mrs AylingÕs saviour, who is pictured above, was Graham Stemp. We are pleased to make him our Local Hero for July.) ...and more thanks... The Nailsworth Christian Aid Committee is pleased to announce a record total of £5224.05 raised at the church service, charity shop and house-to-house collection during Christian Aid week in May. They send their thanks to all who helped in any way. ...and yet more! Jackie Harris, Manager of the Nailsworth branch of Stroud and Swindon, tells us that the book sale they have been holding in the Branch for their 2010 charity, The AlzheimerÕs Society, has been so successful and popular that although it was due to finish at the end of April they have decided to keep it running for the foreseeable future. More than £60 has already been raised. So if you are looking for some holiday reading please call in and see them. Jackie and her team want to send send a big Thank You to everyone who is supporting this. (The thanks are due both ways. The S & S team are a very supportive part of the our community, and are constantly fund-raising for local causes. There are continuing reports of the changes afoot at the S&S at a national level; we wish the Nailsworth team very well. Ed.) The bear necessities Kitty Wright (below) won this wonderful teddybear (called Sammy) in the recent Festival event, at The Little Gift Shop in George Street. Nailsworth Primary School girls raise funds We are pleased to congratulate Lauren Ingram, Ella Webb, Bryony Curtis and Niamh Dolan, pupils at Nailsworth Primary who ran a stall at the recent Shortwood fete and as a result raised £40.50 to buy new books for the school library. Well done, all four! Good luck Mike! Eagle-eyed readers will have spotted that there is no youth report this month from Mike Kilcooley (above). This is because he is deep in EXAMS, aghhh! We can all remember the hard work and stress that involves, so this is to wish him all the best as he waits for his results. WeÕre rooting for you Mike!
