Nailsworth News May 2012No. 121 A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www. nailsworthnews.org.uk. Festivals, festivals, festivals! U U nbelievably, there are FOUR major festivals in Nailsworth this May! Is that an all-time record? There are so many things going on that we couldn't get the individual events into the What's On section on the back of the paper. Instead, we have done a special feature: pages 19-22 have been given over to programmes for: The Nailsworth Festival, 19th-27th May The Jubilee celebrations, 26th May-4th June The Nailsworth Olympics, 18th-25th May NHP Walking Festival, 5th-13th May. Each festival on the list has been created, put together, organised and publicised by a team of volunteers. There has been a huge amount of work involved. Nailsworth owes them a lot. Now all we have to do is to tell our friends and family, book tickets, go to events, enjoy what is on offer and keep our fingers crossed that the weather will be kind! What is happening tothis paper? Thank you, all the many people who contacted the Nailsworth News after our last edition, to offer help so that the paper would not have to close. We are still putting together the new editorial team, but it now seems likely that we will be still be here in the foreseeable future, continuing to bring you local news and to celebrate all things Nailsworth. More of that in the June edition. NN Small Ads Our free small adverts This wonderful Jubilee cake is part of a patriotic display in the window of Nailsworths TeaLounge& CakeCentre. He was born in Newmarket and attended the Shortwood Baptist Infant School until he was five years old. For this education his parents paid 6d per week. He then progressed to the British School for Boys at Forest Green. During Rays schoolboy days, Newmarket was dominated by Hilliers Bacon Factory. Ray remembers how the local lads loved to accompany the pig runs, when pigs delivered to the town by rail then had to be marched to the factory from the Station - a tortuous route that led them across the A46 (fortunately with less traffic than today), up Whitecroft, along Fewster Road and The Rollers into Newmarket Road and on to the factory pens to await their fate. For Ray and his mates, this was an adventure never to be missed. When at school, Ray attended swimming lessons at the Nailsworth Swimming Club at Johnsons Pool, Locks Mill. This was then a thriving club that hosted an annual gala, with swimming and diving competitions throughout the year. At 14 he left school, and together with his twin brother Jack started work at Newman-Hender as a lathe operator. For health reasons, he transferred to train as a plumber with Fred Stevens and at the age of 18 was called up for military service, enlisting as a mechanic in the Royal Signals. He was demobbed in February 1947, came back to Nailsworth and decided to become self-employed. Nailsworth was a very different place in those days; there were two outfitters shops, a tailor, seven pubs, the wooden clock tower stood on the bank in Fountain Street, and the cinema attracted large crowds of filmgoers. Large factories such as A.E. Chamberlain and Hilliers provided many employment opportunities for local residents, and there were passenger trains to and from the town. In 1948 Ray married his wife Ivy, and a year later they moved to a cottage on the hillside at Windsoredge, which is still their home today. Ray was a talented footballer, and for many years played for Shortwood United Football Club. During a long playing career he captained the 2nd XI, sharing in their various ups and downs. He was also a member of Nailsworth Social Club, where he enjoyed social events and dances held in their premises in Brewery Lane. Nowadays Ray is happy to settle for a quiet life, enjoying the occasional coach trip to the coast with his wife Ivy. Mike Brinkworth Advertising price increaseThere has been a gradual rise in our costs over the last two and a half years and, having kept our prices unchanged since October 2009, we have decided we need to make a small increase (of 1) to the unit cost of adverts in Nailsworth News, starting with the July issue. This brings the cost of our smallest advert up from 17 to 18 (or from 16 to 17 per month for a run of three). Full details of the new prices are available on the website. Advertisers with a three month run will not be charged at the new rate until after the June issue, so stock up early (though the price rise is more modest than the one for postage stamps!) A three month run starting before July will be charged at current rates. There is always considerable demand for our advertising space, and we are usually full a week before the deadline each month. We think we give good value: we distribute 3,000 copies each month in Nailsworth, and another 1,000 go to shops and offices, as well as the coverage through our website. A single 60 x 30 advert works out at less than half a penny per copy printed! On April 5th, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet approved the New Library Strategy, and although there are some further stages to be passed, the expectation is that this will be adopted. The strategy recognises the input from the consultation process which finished in March. Perhaps the only novel issue in the New strategy is a greater emphasis on the Virtual Library and e-books. (If, like me, youre a Kindle user, dont get your hopes up just yet; it seems that Amazon is playing hard to get.) As far as Nailsworth is concerned, we will have a Partnership Library, with 12 hours opening guaranteed by GCC in the expectation that this will be substantially increased through volunteer support. So, no change from where we were told we would be a year ago. The Town Councils well argued case for increased, supported, opening hours seems to have fallen on deaf ears; indeed, the only recognition of their submission related to access issues, with reassuring words about parking both in Nailsworth and in Stroud. The 38 page document which went in front of Cabinet (perhaps understandably) devotes most of its space to demonstrating that the present consultation and strategy development process properly addressed the concerns which led to the injunction that had thrown the whole exercise back into the melting pot. We all know that the County Council budget is under pressure from Central Government, because of reduced grant funding support and effective prohibition on any compensating increase in Council Tax. We can accept that GCC has made honest and professional efforts to prioritise the many areas where it would like to spend its monies and that libraries have had to take significant cuts as a relatively low priority area. This is the sort of hard decision imposed on Councils in the current economic climate, and in all honesty there is little prospect of any short term relaxation in these pressures. The question which has never been posed is the one where council tax payers in Nailsworth are asked, Do you want a sixday a week, professionally staffed library facility in Nailsworth? And do you want it enough to pay for the difference between what the County can afford to support and what it would cost? Its an interesting and quite fundamental question BA Talking to our local MP Neil Carmichael, MP for Stroud, has been in touch to tell us about his local surgeries and how you can take advantage of them. Generally they are held once a week on a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. The main base is his Stroud office, but he has also held surgeries elsewhere, including Nailsworth. Maps of venues are supplied on his website, and there is a mobile sign that is placed outside the building when in session. These surgeries run for two hours, with fifteen minute slots, and most end with a set of actions agreed. Neil has recently also held roving surgeries around villages and smaller communities, normally on Saturdays, and will be continuing this with one a month, advertised on his website and through other local media. If you would like to discuss anything about this or make a booking, contact Neil on 751572 or visit his website www.neilcarmichael.co.uk. At its meeting on April 17th, the Town Council agreed by a unanimous vote to seek to purchase the old Police Station at the purchase price of 119,000. Although there was some resentment expressed at, effectively, having to buy the building twice (since it was originally paid for by ratepayers), that was by the way. The price was agreed on the basis of three evaluations, as reported in last months NN. Cllr. Myles Robinson presented a business case for the purchase which involved the summation of purchase price, valuation and legal fees, architects fees, planning and building regulation charges, necessary building work and contingency provision. This would equip the office part of the police station to accommodate the Town Information Centre (the TIC), complete with display facilities and enabled access, toilet, etc. It was proposed that the total cost would be funded entirely by borrowing from the Public Works Loan Board, with a 20 year repayment period. The cost of this loan would be very largely covered by the saving on the rent currently being paid for the TIC offices in the Old George. With the anticipated rental increases on that property, the annual loan costs incurred in moving the TIC would soon be fully met and would show a useful profit over the 20 year period of the project. The only assumption in this projection is the confidently expected increase in rent for the Old George site. PWLB loans are also available on an interest-only repayment basis, which obviously involves a much lower annual payment and would mean that moving the TIC would show an immediate and, ultimately substantial profit but, of course, Nailsworth Town Council would not finish up with the title to the police station package. Council reserved final judgement on which option to pursue, but opinion appeared to favour the repayment scheme. When will this happen? There are a lot of legal hurdles to go through, (not least in setting up the necessary case for and obtaining the PWLB loan), and although no problems are anticipated, this will take time. It may well be a full year before the TIC can be re-established in its new home. The case for purchase is based entirely on moving the TIC into the office area; the potential earning power of the garage and car parking area is real, but has not been factored into the projection. BA Bert celebrates with friends Four years ago we mentioned a major birthday for Bert Relf. We can report that he is now 104 - quite amazing! Congratulations to him on reaching this milestone. Friends and residents from The Steppes recently joined him to celebrate his birthday, and it appears that he is going from strength to strength. Every Tuesday he pops into The Village for a scotch and Rockys beer, with his old time friend Michael (Rocky) Holbrow and his carer Jess (see the photo on the right). He still has that twinkle in his eye, and he certainly knows of all the banter going on around him. Newmarkets loss is The Steppes gain! Can anyone out there remember Berts famous homemade wedding and Christmas cakes? We gather that they were always a real treat. MS More from the Youth Club The Youth Club will be having a stall at the Nailsworth Festival on 19th May. They will be selling childrens toys in good condition, and would be grateful for any unwanted items. Please contact Liz on 834270 to pass any on. They also need the services of an arts and crafts person to work with their Junior section (8-11 year olds) on Wednesdays 5.30-7.00pm. If you think you can help, please contact Tracy on 833212. Jenny Barnett Keeping our streets clean The dog fouling problem is a constant issue in Nailsworth. It features in correspondence with this paper, is often on Town Council agendas, and is also a concern of Stroud District Council. Local resident Mary Horsley has been in touch to suggest a solution for those taking their dogs out: why not wear a mini back-pack (or bum-bag, depending on the size of your pooch) with a tight shutting plastic box inside to put the bags of canine poo in, and then dispose of it at home in your bin? Mary has a friend trying this out who has reported back that it works brilliantly. So, dog owners, how about it? Our correspondent suspects that this notice might entice rather than deter, and comments that in the meantime a garish blot dominates vision, and grates on the lovely soft colours of the Cotswold scenery. So for instance, there is more news about Halas and Batchelor. Mike Komarnyckyj had asked if anyone knew where the cels might have gone from the many H & B animations. A local reader from the Halas family who remembers having two of those cels framed got in touch to offer help. On the same subject, there may be a useful link with the newly launched Stroud Community TV (website http:// stroudcommunity.tv). The organisers of that are considering having a special tag for Nailsworth-related films, and say that they are sure there are many more Nailsworth films out there. Do drop them (or this paper) a line if you can help track any down. It would also be good to get some Halas YouTubes on the site if there are any with a Stroud connection. Do you know of any? Another of last months letters was from David G Sims, about his aunt, her companion Miss (Betty?) Lockie and their cottage. A correspondent has now supplied further details, including the fact that these ladies originally lived at Cherry Trees, later moved to Worley Ridge and eventually became house sitters in Haslemere in Surrey. The writer has fond memories of them. There has been further correspondence about the pavement A boards referred to in our April edition. A reader who dislikes them has asked whether traders need to pay to put them out, and clearly thinks that would be a good idea. The same correspondent, (referred to as an old un) feels that Nailsworth is less friendly than in his (or her) childhood, but there I have to disagree. I probably wasnt around at the time referred to, but newcomers to this town almost always comment on the warm welcome they are given, so I think that spirit is still alive and well here! Ed. This also signalled a general slump in form, and with only a few games left it seems they will have to settle for mid- table anonymity. Although that is better than facing a relegation battle, it still falls short of where they want to be in the league. The reserves season also tailed off into anonymity, losing their last two fixtures to finish mid-table. However, Taverners are still very well placed to win the County League Respect award for best disciplinary record, and that would be no mean achievement. The club will be holding its 40thAnniversaryDinner&Dance at Forest Green Rovers FC on the evening of Saturday 26th May. Members past and present will be getting together to celebrate 40 years of the club. If you have an attachment to Taverners FC (or just want a great evening out!) and would like to attend, tickets can be purchased by calling Mark on 07921658849. The price is 28pp and includes entertainment and a 3 course meal. Please book as early as possible. Check out www. taverners.com for more details and other news. I am not ashamed to have been one of those doubters. After all, having supported and followed the team for more years than I can remember, I have seen many blue moons and golden horizons all come to nothing after much hype. However, maybe this season has provided some real optimism for the future. All in all, things have gone well to plan, and in some peoples eyes far better than expected (in spite of the occasional poor performance). The manager and players deserve huge credit for what they have achieved this year. Many matches have been a joy to watch, particularly after half time (is it to do with something in the tea?) There is talk of a serious push for promotion to the Football League next season. No one yet knows if this is achievable. What IS known is that FGR cannot reasonably expect to maintain high standards on the football side of things without support from its fans. Gates are up, and that is good, but they could be so much better. Out of 900 or so attending home matches, only about 150 are Nailsworth people. Can anyone explain this? Big attendances produce big reactions for the players and obviously big receipts that the Club can invest in the team, so that statistic is something to think about. Right now, we can all relax, look back on a very successful season and prepare for August after a deluge of Olympics, Cricket, Wimbledon, Golf, Formula 1, Queens Jubilee and everything else that GB is so brilliant at. I will enjoy it all and get sorted for another great season next August at FGR. Cant wait... MS Lukes new youth football team Its called AFC Nailsworth, and it is the brainwave of Luke Burrows (16). Over a year ago, there was a local need for a teenage football team, so Luke hit upon the simple but exciting idea of setting up his own. Luke, who has brought a new passion to the town, clearly likes to keep busy; he studies at Stroud College in IT and is also now qualified at FA coaching level 1, as well as helping with sports at the Youth Club. The Under-17 team is now the Under-18s, and they are looking forward to moving on from friendly matches to joining the Stroud & District league in the Autumn, where points mean prizes. Sam Martin, the manager, is keen to find new players. If you are 15+ and want to play, then get in touch. There is also an increasingly popular Under-12 team, managed by Luke, and more players are sought for that as well. Under-18 matches are played at KGV in Nympsfield (where The Commoners also play cricket), and the Under-12s play at the school fields at the top of town. It is good to see that Coles Electrical and Siren Alarms sponsor the teams through the Club shirts. For more information, please contact Bruce Weatherston (who oversees the whole enterprise) on 834660, bruceweatherson@hotmail. com or Luke Burrows on 836038, afcnailsworth@hotmail.co.uk. MS Sport Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club Despite the fact that it has been present in the town for overa century, many people are unaware of the existence of the Nailsworth Bowling Club on the Avening road trading estate (next to Wyevale Garden Centre). Those who do know it talk of the friendliness and warmth of welcome from its members, as well as the pleasure that players gain from this historic sport. Often thought to be the exclusive domain of the elderly, bowls is actually played by people of a wide range of ages and levels of fitness. Anyone from 14+ is more than welcome - they would love to see you - and it can be as gentle or vicious as you like. Apparently croquet has a reputation for such things, but watch out for bowls as well! It is a sport which anyone can enjoy playing within a few minutes, but you can also spend a lifetime developing its tactics. On each of the Friday evenings in May, the club will be opening its doors to anybody who would like to have a go at playing bowls. You will be given full tuition from experienced players, and the loan of all necessary equipment. Other than wearing flat shoes, there are no dress restrictions, and best of all, these taster sessions are completely free. Matches are played regularly at all levels of ability, and there is plenty of homespun fun on the greens. When there are no matches, just turn up, play the game with friends and enjoy the Club House facilities on site (licensed during normal hours.) Should you wish to become a member, it will cost you a mere 65 per annum - that sounds pretty good value! If you would like further information, please phone Brian Hughes on 832689; otherwise just turn up at the club between 6.30 and 7 pm. They look forward to seeing you. (The photos show experienced bowlers now, and the opening of the club in 1924.) Shortwood Utd As Jim Cunneen (Shortwood Utd. Press Officer) states, Tuesday nights draw against Wantage means that Shortwood can no longer catch Oxford City Nomads in the race for the league title, and that whatever happens in their remaining two league games, Phoenix excels! In only our third year in the Stroud table tennis league, theNailsworth Phoenix between them collected a good haul oftrophies at the recent Presentation Evening (and now needto find a cabinet). Top honours went to the A team, who won promotion to division one. Promotion was also gainedto division three, so next season we will be representedin all four divisions and will be entering at least one more team. Full honours: AndyStratfords A team won division two, and our B team led by MikeDaviswere runners up. LaurenceManleys C team won division four. Laurence himself was individual runner up in the division to team mate KevinPride, and also picked up another trophy for having the best average in all four divisions. RichCole won the prize for the individual winner of division two. And to cap it all, the club itself was presented with the committee award for all the work that had gone into creating and building Nailsworth Phoenix. The award was gratefully received from the Stroud League president TrevorGolding, by MikeDavis and myself. We are keen to get some more juniors to come and play, so if you are under 18, boy or girl, and would like to learn table tennis then get in touch at www.nailsworthphoenix.co.uk or just pop in Tuesday / Thursday evening or Saturday morning at the Sub Rooms. Andy Hammond Left to right: Laurence Manley, Rich Cole, Andy Hammond, Andy Stratford & Mike Davis Shortwood will finish as runners up. Take nothing away from the Meadowbank outfit, however, as their achievement has been nothing short of remarkable given the demands placed upon them of so many games in such a short time scale. Unfortunately, it seems to have caught up with them finally, and they looked understandably tired in these last two fixtures. What Shortwood have achieved this season is quite superb. To again lose out as League champions by the very closest of margins is a real blow, but to be so close once more is something special. How does Jim Evans keep the momentum going each season? Shortwood have reached 2 cup finals as well. Of course the players will feel disappointed that all their efforts have come to nought in the league again, but what a load of memories they have left us! Thank you, one and all - it has been great and we will be back again next season. (Acts Chapter 4, verses 32-36.) These verses tell us how the early Christians lived together after Jesus had ascended back to heaven. They met together regularly, shared meals, prayed together, worshipped together and shared the resources they had so that no one was in need. Before we remember Ascension Day (on 17th May) we have Christian Aid week from the 13th-19th May. Christian Aid is the agency of the churches in the UK and Ireland. They currently work in 47 countries, giving some of the poorest people in the world the tools to help themselves out of poverty. Collectors will be round to your doors with those distinctive red envelopes, and all contributions are much appreciated, (it isnt easy going round knocking on doors so please be nice to them!) By giving in this way, we are continuing the example of the early Christians, who organised themselves to help those in need. As well as the practical side, it is a huge encouragement and comfort to know that others from far away are offering assistance. Reverend Stephen Earley One of the great privileges of working here in Nailsworth is that I get to meet some wonderful people who are keen to debate with and challenge me on matters of faith. Years 5 and 6 at Nailsworth Primary tested my mettle last term. As we go forward into the summer term. I thought Id offer the following, taken from a recent service at Christ Church. Theres a story I heard some time ago and it goes like this: A large group of young people had travelled, on pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the Easter holidays. Early in the morning of Resurrection Sunday, they met for worship in the garden of a seminary in Jerusalem. Joe, the young minister leading worship that day, arrived in full academic regalia - black clerical shirt with white clerical collar, black cassock with gown and preaching tabs and of course the hood, trimmed with the colours that his university deemed appropriate for a Master of Divinity. Those assembled had only ever seen him in jeans and t-shirt, so were surprised at this formality, but put it down to the fact that it was the most important day in the Christian year. They sang hymns, said prayers and then settled back to listen to the sermon. Joe began. He first gave a brilliant exegesis on the Bible passage, and told the story of Jesus overcoming death to bridge the gap between us and the God who loves us. He then went on to tell of the disciples, at first dismayed by what seemed to be the failure of Gods mission, but then so much emboldened and encouraged by Jesus return that they were able to go out into the world and transform it. As Joe got to the part of the resurrection story where Jesus appeared to his disciples, he began to undo the top buttons of his cassock and remove his preaching tabs. He carried on talking and took off his hood and gown, unbuttoned his cassock and removed it, then did the same with his clerical shirt and black trousers. There he stopped and as he stood amongst them, clad only in his underwear he told the assembly, And that is what I want you to remember today just because you werent there and didnt see it; it doesnt mean that it didnt happen! Reverend Sian Collins Local church history in your attic? St. Georges is looking for more information about the history of the Church as part of its Organ Restoration project, for a new guide book. Can you help? Richard Burton wants to find out more about major people from the Churchs past - Sir Oliver Heywood (mural painter), the sculptor of the St. Francis statue (Paull ?), Peter Strong who made the stained glass east window, and anyone else with a link. MS Jubilee Service On Sunday 3rd June there will be a united service in St Georges Church at 10.30am, to celebrate and give thanks for the life and loyalty of Queen Elizabeth II. She has been an inspirational servant to our country for 60 years and is respected throughout the world for her devotion to duty. The service will include well-known hymns led by the Ecumenical Choir, as well as memories of the Coronation, and will be followed by coffee and cakes. We are looking forward to hosting a Jubilee lunch on Friday 1st June, followed by a traditional sports day afternoon based on the sports played at the last Diamond Jubilee. These will include wheelbarrow races, three legged races, skipping races etc. We are also looking forward to being part of Psalms event, The Games, on Friday 22nd June. Our school value this term is perseverance, and the Olympics is providing a great source of material to help the children learn this important life skill. They especially valued watching Derek Redmonds perseverance to finish to the 400m Olympics final despite breaking down in the back straight, and Steve Jones amazing sprint finish to win gold despite being endlessly told he didnt have a sprint finish! Year 4 proudly organised a whole WaterAid fundraising project and raised 210 to buy a ground well water pump for a village. Below is one of their reports. Y4 fund raising for Water Aid Last term year 4 had been learning about Water Aid. It is a charity that helps provide clean water for people who only have dirty water and no sanitation. On Thursday 22nd of March we had an extremely exciting day trying to raise money for this very special cause. Thank you to all of those who brought in cakes for the sale and for coming in wearing blue. Year4 did a performance and we all think we really sent the message across. Year4s target at the beginning of the day was to raise 160.00 as this can provide a manufactured rope pump. We are extremely St. Dominics Primary School T T he beginning of another new term! As mentioned in my last report, this will be a very busy term with the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics. As well as all the celebrating, we will be doing a considerable amount of learning and will especially be focusing on story writing. We have invited Andy Mellor (former teacher at Nailsworth School) to lead us in a two day story writing workshop later in June. He will be spending time with each class, and hopefully we will be able to include some of the childrens work in a future report. Staff will also benefit from a chance to meet Andy when he leads us all in a staff meeting after school. Having heard him speak once before, we are all very excited about this opportunity. Following the SATs tests in May, our older children will again be travelling to Shropshire for a PGL long weekend. This is always exciting for both children and staff and certainly one of the highlights of the summer term - lets just hope the weather is good! Nailsworth welcomes faster broadband Broadband connection was slow reaching Nailsworth compared with the rest of the country. We have only had it since 2003, and the faster, 8mbps ADSL Max didnt get to us until 2006. But recently we have jumped the queue in comparison with much of the rest of the country - the next generation of broadband is coming to our town! We now have 21CN at our local exchange. This means that, given the right internet provider and quality of line, you could get up to 40mbps internet speed. For those to whom the numbers dont mean a lot, take it from me that it is very, very fast! Some Nailsworth subscribers to Sky or TalkTalk have had those speeds for a while already, but now with the upgrading of the exchange, more internet providers will offer them. What will you be able to do with all that extra speed? Well, everything will happen faster - looking at internet pages, emails, downloads, etc. No more sitting tapping your fingers while the computer seems to yawn its way through tediously slow processes. But perhaps the biggest improvement will be when downloading or streaming videos. You should be able to watch High Definition video online without the stuttering and pausing that happens with slower connections. What will you need to have, to access this faster service? The answer is, (a) a service provider that offers the faster service (which will probably be called ADSL+ or 21CN), and (b) a modem or router that supports it. So the first step is to contact your internet Service Provider and ask them about faster service (although they may have dealt with this automatically without telling you). The next is to check that your router or modem will cope with ADSL+. If it is a few years old it might not, and it is then probably worth replacing (cost about 50) since routers can deteriorate with time. If all this dismays you, dont worry - there are plenty of companies and individuals in Nailsworth who can help, and it shouldnt cost you an arm and a leg! (Below right, Sam Dawkins the proprietor, with James.) Minding our own business Liam comments on local job propects Just a year ago we told you about ESS Employment Ltds 25-year celebrations. This year weve been back to talk to their Operations Manager, Liam Edwards (shown on the right), who is celebrating 10 years with the company. He has been a Nailsworth resident since he was 10 and joined the company as a trainee in 2002. His message about employment opportunities in the Stroud valleys was quite optimistic. ESS is placing roughly twice the number of people seeking employment as it did last year. About half the placements are for part-time work, but Liam pointed out that it was far from uncommon for this to lead to full-time employment. ESSs main dealings are with manufacturing companies; small retailers tend to do their own recruitment and the bigger operators, like Morrisons, also do their own thing. The same applies in the hotel and restaurant trade. Liam commented on the different approaches between large and smaller companies. Big companies often set paper qualifications as a pre-requisite for an employment interview; smaller companies are much more interested in experience, often to the exclusion of formal qualifications. As regards the companies with which ESS mainly deal, work experience was very often of greater value than a university degree. How are the job opportunities developing? Liams view is that there is still a core of hands-on manufacturing jobs but, increasingly, firms are looking to fill vacancies in their sales and managerial staffs. Local firm with solar power Cotswold Plastics, one of the long established firms on the Nailsworth Mills Estate, has gone solar. The south-facing roof of their building has solar panels on it, generating electricity. The company uses a lot of electric power, and it makes sense to produce as much as possible on site. The system has now been operating for several months and has demonstrated some of the basic facts about solar power. Short daylight hours and cloud cover arent good news, but clear skies and bright sunlight do the business and very significantly reduce the amount of electricity that Cotswold Plastics has to take from the grid. It seems only yesterday that Sally opened this wonderful toy shop for children and kids of all ages. How time flies! Starshine has evolved over the years; for instance, it now supports the Fair Trade wooden toys side of things as well as stocking traditional and well-known childrens activities and games. With summer on the way, the shop is focussing on seasonal activities for indoors and outdoors, in the garden and to keep the young and the not-so-young busy during holidays. For example, Pathwords and Rush Hour are amazing, simple games to play in the car when you are on the long road to your holiday wonderland. Or if you are staying at home this year, there are others for the garden (some with a twist.) Scooters, pogo sticks, skateboards and more are on offer, so drop in to the shop to see the full range and return to the glory of childhood. Starshine is open Mon - Sat, 9am - 5pm (phone 839204.) MS Cards for all occasions Alongside Starshine, TheCardandPartyGame has opened and is selling designer cards at rock-bottom prices. There are plenty of other party goods available as well - banners, garlands, stationery, themed balloons, giftwrapping and more. With the Queens Diamond Jubilee in the offing, the shop will have all the necessary bunting and balloons etc. to help celebrate the occasion. Why not call in and place your order? JackieArcher (Manager) is always on duty and more than happy to meet you and chat about your party needs. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am - 5pm (phone 07918841758). What they say about Nailsworth... Two conversations this month gave me an interesting insight into what strangers think of Nailsworth (the good side of it; no doubt there are other people who might have less flattering things to say!) Firstly, TimMullenof the Ram at Woodchester can often be spotted shopping in Nailsworth. When I asked him why, he said how excellent the town is for sourcing the fresh food that goes into the meals served there, and named several of our shops. Secondly, two men were working on a building at the top of Fountain Street recently, one up a ladder working on a window, the other leaning on the base of the ladder for stability. They seemed blown over by the number of people who stopped to chat with them while passing along the street. They were from a Bristol firm and said, this just doesnt happen in the big city - so they asked, can they move to Nailsworth please? (Ed.) Dying without a Will. Now thats a real tragedy. Youth matters Nailsworth - a town that fosters talent By Eilidh Houghton, Youth Editor I I n my opinion, Nailsworth is a place where art and creativity is held in high esteem. The music industry and the lifestyle that acompanies it have always been attractive, and recently there has also been an increase in the drive that many young people have to pursue their dreams. Self expression and individuality have risen in popularity, and all the young people that I know are pushing forward to create a future for themselves, confidently following their ambitions and making something happen. For aspiring musicians, this would not be possible without support from local venues and audiences. The Village Inn is one place that offers such opportunities. Amy Spencer, Callum Partridge, Joe Partridge, Mark Goodswaard and Shane Bootheby make up the blues band The Hitchhoppers. Several nights ago I watched them perform at The Village Inn. They were joined by four other members that they had met previously at one of the pubs open mic events. Nights such as the one I attended give valuable opportunities to musicians, widening their fan base and allowing No call out fee, minor jobs taken! 07779 094714 01453 836369 them to introduce themselves to the world that they wish to be a part of. It was wonderful to see Callum, Amy & Joe such a good level of support from Nailsworths inhabitants, and frankly I was blown away by the variety of talent on display. Joe and Callum explained to me that they formed their band through jamming with friends. Amy joined them after they had lost their initial singer, and they now seem to be going from strength to strength. Recently, The Hitchhoppers reached number two on the iTunes blues chart with one of their singles, and they have several gigs lined up for the near future. Joe emphasises that the large amount of local support from both audiences and venues has helped them to progress. He describes blues music as versatile, saying that it appeals to people of all ages. Though four of The Hitchhoppers members are at university, they are continuing to map out the bands future and Joe says he wishes to follow music more intensively after university. With the plans of young people like these getting ever more adventurous, it is really good to see that there is plentiful local support in Nailsworth! Brian Allchorn - I remember... Brother Colin N N ot, I hasten to add, anyone of an ecclesiastical bent, just my younger brother. He is almost three years younger than me, which was quite an age gap in those far off childhood days and meant he had an entirely different set of friends to me. Two of the most prominent among them were Bernard Bunny Cole, who lived in Market Street, and Johnny Creed, who lived in Horsley Road just up from Cossack Square. Colin had quite a cherubic face (dont be fooled) and was indeed given the nickname Angelface by Sam Franklin, with whom we lived above his shoe shop in Church Street when we first came to Nailsworth. Maurice Baldwin lived next door, where his mother had a hairdressing salon, and I believe he is also around Colins age. In the churchyard opposite, just behind the War Memorial (known colloquially as The Cross) stood two large sequioas that apparently posed a challenge to Colin, for it wasnt long before a black pirate flag appeared at the top of the tallest one and remained there, if memory serves me correctly, until it was eventually blown to bits by the wind. Those trees became favourite climbers for us kids. Colin always seemed to have something of a penchant for pets, and would often bring home young birds that had fallen from nests. He had a pet jackdaw after the war in Eastbourne, which he kept in a cage, but which was unfortunately found dead after a thunderstorm. It was buried with full military honours. Whilst in Nailsworth he also found up in the woods one of the large snails that were introduced to the area by the Romans as a food item. This was brought home, a small hole was Of royal events anddates... The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will climax on June 4th. Why June 4th? The best answer is probably that thats the date the government specified; its a Monday (which is good day for a public holiday) and in early June theres a good chance of fine weather, global warming notwithstanding. The Queens reign actually started on February 6th, the date of her fathers death. Her coronation was on June 2nd, but that was in 1953, not 1952. There wasnt a whole lot to celebrate in June 1952. Churchill's Conservative government was getting into its stride; the Korean War was grinding on with Chinese troops joining the North Korean forces; in Europe the fortification of the Iron Curtain continued (it had already been five years in the making and it would be another eleven years before the Berlin Wall completed the curtain); General Eisenhower was launching his campaign to succeed Truman as President of the USA; the Schuman Plan for an European Coal and Steel Community the forerunner of the EU was ratified and Dennis Compton scored his 100th Century.
