April 2014No. 140Nailsworth News A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www.nailsworthnews.org.uk Happy ChocoholicDay Or do you mean Happy Easter? What a pity that yet anotherChristian Festival has been taken over by commercialism. The roots of the name Easter come from the old English / paganEostre for a spring festival celebrating new birth and new life afterthe cold and death of the past winter. It just so happened to coincide with the Passover of the Jewish faith and when Christianity hitthese shores, the name stuck. At least the Anglo-Saxons wouldnt be deprived of one of their more importantfestivals! Easter bunnies and chicks along with Eastereggs are all symbolic of the season of newbirth - hence the time that Christians celebrate the new birth of Jesus at the Resurrection. When one buys Easter Eggs this year, just spare a thought for what Easter really meansand celebrates - it is not complicated andit wont cost you an arm and a leg like the chocolate does! Beaudesert Park School Edible Art. See page 10 Nailsworth in the Top 101... according to a recent Sunday Times article (16 March 2014). We often wonder who contributes to such polls, but Nailsworth is rated so highly because of the posh grub, Williams, 1m houses in the centre of town, no parking fees ... There is so much more to Nailsworth than just this list and how shortsighted the ST editor must be to list this nonsense, without paying a personal visit and see why we know Nailsworth should be in the TOP TEN places to live! This town is rather special for so many more (serious) reasons than posh food etc. It is not a twee Cotswold town and doesnt pretend to be. It has light industry, popular shops (always with a waiting list for newcomers), places to eat and drink, loads of sports facilitiesto suit every taste, fabulous countryside, a diverse set of people with diverseinterests, places of worship, great schools (independent, private and state), history through the centuries, tourists, and the list just goes on. Yes, it does have its problems, but then any community does, and we in Nailsworth are fortunate to have a Town Council, and other bodies, who do try to maintain the workings of the town, whether we believe it or not! People come here to work, rest and play, not for the poshness, not thefree parking, not the upmarket shops (whatever that means), but because ithas a unique working and friendly feel that suits so many. I for one, would rather work and live here, than in some picture-boxentity where the majority of contact is with people on holiday and behind acamera! (MS) What is this? Local Affairs Local Affairs Your Council has been invited to comment on the system of votingfor Stroud District Council elections, as the Boundary Commissionis considering changesin 2016. At present there is one CountyCouncillor and three District Councillors representing Nailsworth& Horsley and electionsare held every year. Each councillor serves a four year term. There are elections each yearto elect one district councillor on a three year cycle and in the fourth year an election for a County Councillor. Stroud District Council is considering an all out election every four years, which would mean that County, District and Town Council elections could all take place at the same time. Nailsworth Town Council favours an election every four years believing we might get a broader range of candidates (and councillors) and there will be a financial saving. I welcome the support of the Nailsworth Garden Group whohave undertaken to carry out an overhaul of the plants in the Myles Robinson, Mayor of Nailsworth Mortimer Gardens. The Town Council will be providing some new plants and will pay forthe skip to remove unwanted specimens, but once again I amextremely grateful for the voluntary help we receive. I am delighted to hear of the transformation of the formerCrystal Fountain complex of some 60 retirement homes atInchbrook into Woodchester Valley Village. Legal problems which proved a huge disincentive to buy or lease homes havebeen expertly overcome and the project appears to have abright future. With the freehold ownership now entrusted to the residents and their families, I expect this mutual projectto to quickly attract many new residents to our community. Let us hope that the former Crown Inn at Inchbrook willalso be renovated soon as it provides a sad entrance to theWoodchester Valley Village and to Nailsworth Town. Last Sunday, I was able to take my five grandchildren to the newly opened King George V Children Play area. I recommend this to parents and grandparents. I was able to sitpeacefully on the bench with my book, whilst the childrenexplored this new and imaginative adventure. The Police Authority and Town Council have increased their taxes so you will see a rise in your counciltax bills this year. The District Council is in discussion with the CLT (Community Land Trust - www.nailsworthclt.org.uk) about the possible development of some of the land thatit owns in the town which should result in some more affordable housing becoming available for local people. The redevelopment of the sites in Minchinhampton wherecouncil houses had to be demolished because of problemswith their construction method is now underway and willagain provide some more affordable housing, albeit a little further away from Nailsworth. Catherine 07923 212415 5 Williams Fish Market & Food Hall By the time you read this William and Rae Beeston will be holidaying with their family in Australia. The excitement and trauma of selling the business theyd built up over many years will be fading memories. We spoke to William in the week after the sale was finally completed. He told us he was very happy about the end result of quite a protracted sale. He was particularly grateful to a staff who for many years had contributed to the success of the business making it a pleasure to run. They had continued fully to support him during what must have been a period of some uncertainty. And he wanted to thank his many lovely, loyal customers. Nailsworth owes a debt to William for his major contribution in putting Nailsworth on the map and we can all join in wishing him and Rae all the best for a long and happy retirement. And, in Williams stead, lets welcome the new owners, Edward and Helen Playne (photo below). We talked to Ed, Helen and Marianne Combe about themselves and their plans for their new acquisition. Playne is, of course, a significant name in Nailsworths history and Edward is of the mill owning family. He and Helen live in the house which his mill owner forebear built in the 17th Century and which has never been out of family ownership. They want to continue the shops fish mongering tradition, with Ed taking charge of the fish and the wine. Helens background is in the restaurant side of the business and she wants to continue and enhance the Oyster Bar side of the enterprise and not just for lunch. Helen has worked in public relations for restaurants in London and knows what appeals. Marianne Combe has worked in the shop for some eight years, mainly on the accounting side but she has skills and experience in almost every aspect of the business including the delicatessen. Marianne is the Managing Director of the new enterprise, with Helen and Ed as co-Directors. She is responsible for the day to day running. All the staff members who worked for and with William are staying on, so there will be familiar faces to greet you when you go to shop or for lunch or a coffee. Williams aint broke and the new team arent about to try and fix it. Itll be steady as she goes. You depended on them before for quality products and friendly service and you can go on doing just that. (01453 833855) Minding our own Business Minding our own Business I I n a move that will excite all budding gardeners and delight the NailsworthGo Green movement, our town is to get some brand new Allotments. There will be 14 allotments, of varying sizes, with easy access nearthe middle of the town and the call is going out forpeople to take them on. Allotments can be fantastic - theres nothing better than getting your hands on your first vegetable plot. Its a great feeling, because suddenly you have the space to grow whatever youwant. Hopefully 14 Nailsworth residents will jumpat the chance to grow fresh organic food cheaply for themselves and their families. Because of the location there will be restrictions on the height of sheds, however there is ample parking nearby. The allotments are going to be set up behind theLibrary, below the Hanover housing development. Access will be from Old Market, through a specially commissioned archway. The existing long stay parking spaces will be relocated tothe Avening Road. A Council Spokesperson said we are often asked about allotments in the town, and we have been racking our brains to sort something out. Also there are constant complaints about parking in town so we are delighted to be able to solve two problems in one fix. However not everyone is happy about the plans; Mrs Norah Trellis of Churchill Road said to NN I cant think of anything worse - piles of mouldy cucumbers near theTIC and the smell of horse manure wafting up the hill. Im disgusted. A hopeful gardener, Ms Circadia Johnson-Jones is delighted. We recently moved here but only have a bijou pav garden, so Ill be applying for one. Ican teach Jacinta and Hugo about the countryside and we can grow food atthe same time. Jacinta will grow sun dried tomatoes and Hugo will have apesto plant. Its so exciting! BENS CHINESE TAKEAWAY & KEBABS It is probably very well known to us by now. Ben Guo opened herein Nailsworth in Old Market just beforeChristmas and recently opened his kebab section in the same shop. Ben learned his trade from years in a similar takeaway inLondon and moved to Kings Stanley in 2007 to open his own business there. Asked why he chose Nailsworth, the reply was twofold. Somany people from Nailsworth were ordering from Kings Stanley that is was easier to open up here as well - this town isbusy and there are many people around all the time - and thedemand is still great! I would love to live here one day ... it has Bens Chinese menu is very much as you would find anywhere - Chow Mein, Chop Suey, curry, rice, sweet and sour etc., as well as THAI dishes and plenty of choice for vegetarians. BUT, he chooses his ingredients carefully, uses spices accordingly for his own recipes which give thatsomething slightly different and changes the menu every so often. Traditional Set Meals are available. Jodie Thomson T - 01453 764429 E - jodie.thomson@rspcastroud.org.uk a special atmosphere. With the road to the Horsley tip blocked, the Javelin ParkIncinerator facing apparently endless delays, Stroud District Council vehemently opposedto the whole project and the burden of land-filltaxes mounting, a new approach is needed. On April 1st the formal release of plans for a low tech incinerator in Nailsworth is expected. The plans call for a circular enclosure some 20 metres in diameter to be builtpartly on the Town Square and partly on Old Market. Traffic on Old Market would be diverted on to a new road built over the current car park below MapleTree Court. Rubbish would be burned in an open fire with an eternal flame gas pilot light. Incombustible waste would be removed from an ash pit periodicallyfor onward shipment to China. Having proper regard for health and safety the site would be protected by a highelectric fence with barbed wire topping. Experts suggest that the fumes from thefire would be interesting rather than actually toxic, should not (greatly) harmPrincess Annes trees and, given prevailing wind directions would not present a hazard to Council employees at Ebley Mill or Shire Hall. The fire would be managed remotely by a contractor with a CCTV link and controls for sprinkler systems, either for water or gasoline. The Fire and Rescue Service have expressed reservations about the gasoline spraying facility, but have been reassured when it was pointed out that its purpose was to get the(expletive deleted) fire going, not to put it out. Advantages would be low initial cost, traffic calming, providing a centre ofinterest in Town Square. Drawbacks are the loss of much of the car parking space in Old Market (were spending a lot of money on the bus station; morepeople should ride the bus or walk) and some easily resolved environmentalconcerns (why does the ash have to go to China? Arent there local industries that could use it?) The club offers a space for the Youth Forum meetings. It also has individual nights for different age groups; offering an opportunity for activities, discussion and relaxation I wasamazed at the size of the building itself - its a Tardis! The facilities include a large hall (available to rent out), an art room and pool tables, a lounge with games stations and acoffee bar! The club also runs summer residential and offers those interested a chance to talk through questions concerningdrugs, alcohol and sexual health with professionals. The Youth Club has run for fifty one years and works closely in partnership with the police. One of Nailsworths best kept secrets is that it only has a 1 entry fee! It baffles methat - though Ive been living in Nailsworth nearly all mylife - I hadnt checked out the Youth Club! Tracy informs me that they get between seventy and one hundred childrenthrough their doors per week. I spoke to someone who used to attend the Club and she said that when she attended, It was alwayswelcoming and goodplace to go as a kid; italways had good activeactivities. There was always something to doand it was a good wayto spend my time. The place itself is vibrant, it feels comfortable and there are pictures of its members onthe walls. As a community we own the Youth Club, its held in trust and sponsored by many local benefactors - why notmake better use of it? I would prompt anyone who hasnt been to pop in and see for yourselves! Eilidh Houghton - youth@nailsworthnews.org.uk T T he only chestnut tree whichjustifies the name for ChestnutHill has had a pretty drastichaircut. Hopefully it will growback to its former glory but thatwont be tomorrow. Of course its a listed tree and planning permission is needed to mess aboutwith it. This was, initially, denied but the decision was appealed and the chain saw brigade moved in. Not everyone is happy with the process (or the result). Theres a lesson here for all of us. Dont think that an initial planning permission denial is the end of the road. Developers and others will always appeal andoften (some would say all too often) the initial decision is overturned. Ceaseless vigilance. T T he road to Horsley is open again, though still with traffic lights on a single lane stretch. On the other hand, the Avening Road between the Weighbridge and the entry to Longfords Mill is closed until 1st of May or until the work to replace the gas main has been completed. Square Trunk? On the border of Panama and Guatamala, due to a strange quirk in thelocal water system, acertain branch of the sycamore tree growsin the form of a squaretrunk. No where else in the world is there this phenomenon. Luckily for carpenters and joiners, this tree growswell and reproduces quickly so it can be sustainablefor commercial use. It has caught the notice ofNailsworth Planks and Boards since it saves the business much money in reducing wastage of woodand helping create many more straight pieces ofwood per tree for the building industry. As a result, NP&B has secured a major contract withHovis-Homes.PLC to supply boards for their newhomes being built in Newmarket in 2015. First, a correction to the vehicle details - it was a 1956 Bedford model CA Van used for private trips by the Phillips family (not a Dormobile which was made as a mobile camper-home). It was last used in 1978 and parked up outside GlendowerCottage Garage in Whips Lane, where nature secured it safely by self-sown trees. Founded in 2010, The Friends of Glendower are helping in restoration work for NormanPhillips, owner of thishistoric 18th centurycottage in which his famousGreat Uncle, WH Davies, the Welsh Super Tramp, died in 1940. An arrangement was madeduring 2013 for volunteersfrom the Stroud Valleys Project to remove thetrees, and later through the Village Agent, for removal of the vans rusted remains by theCouncil. There will be two opportunitiesthis year for otherevening public visitsto the cottage. Wednesday 7 May- a WEA day event starting at 10.00amin the Mortimer Room reading WH Davies works. This follows on from a 5 week course starting Wednesday mornings at Stonehouse, reading Poems and Stories by our three local writers - the RevAwdry, WH Davies and Laurie Lee. His knowledge of local industries, families and their estates was immense, and he would frequently recall where thestone came from in some old house, or where the line of a watercourse, pipe or publicservice lay. inhabitants. (forerunner to the Town Council) to use as it saw fit, for the benefit of local The Mortimer Legacy In about 1920 he built properties in Bridge Street, including one for his own occupation, where he carried on business as an antique dealer. Later, he lived in Watledge. He lived very frugally, neither smoked nor drank and spent very little on himself. He was a man who shunned publicity at all times. Apart from a period between 1910 and 1926 when he was associated with the old Mechanics Institute & Reading Room at the Sub Rooms, he took no part in public affairs. He held the lease on the Sub Rooms where he constructed two grass tennis courts on the adjoining land. Williams gift to the town came at a most opportune moment, and set the seal on the development of Old Market. After public consultation and much deliberation on how to spend the bequest, two projects out of twelve were finally agreed, taking into account Williams personal interest in books, trees, plants and the environment. The UDC had always hoped to use thespace formerly occupied by Taylors Garage on Fountain Street as an amenity area, whichthe Mortimer bequest now made possible. Mortimer Gardens was designed by CountyCouncil landscape gardener Mrs Truscott and included a path which led from Fountain Streetthrough to Old Market, and a stream-side walk. The rather unexciting straightness of the stream as it flows rather than meanders through the gardens, was designed to help the water escape easily and lessen the risk of flooding from which Nailsworth had suffered so severely in the past. The Mortimer Room, envisaged originally as a quiet room associated with the Library, is extensively used for meetings and activities. As a direct result of the availability of this room, the Nailsworth Society was founded in 1974 as a natural successor to the 19C Mechanics Institute and the Shortwood Mutual Improvement Society. The Reading Society of 1834 wassuperseded in 1928 by a Village Centre Library in the Parlour (Johnson King Rooms) of the Baptist Chapel. In 1952 the library became a branch of the CountyLibrary and moved to premises in the SubRooms. After the opening of Old Market, when itwas clear that the existing library facilitieswere inadequate and with land in the centralarea having now become available, theCounty Council provided a purpose builtlibrary which opened in 1973, with a policestation on one side (now the TIC) and the UDC-financed Mortimer Room on the other. I have yet to hear the chiffchaff s song, but the woodpecker is very active making drumming sounds on the trees. All are signs of the long awaited spring. We are now well into the season of Lent which like the season of spring, is also a time of renewal and growth. In the historical past, Lentwas a long and fairly strict religious fast when people gave up all rich food and ate onlymoderately as a self discipline. Today, Lent is seen as more of a period of prayer and reflection which leads to a deeper self-awareness. It is an opportunity to spend time in silence and contemplation, away from the busy bustle of our noisy world. Many people areunsure of spending time in silence, but after the initial shock they begin to appreciate thepeace and calm that it brings to their lives. Renewal not only brings a new sparkle to ourthoughts, but also strength to our spiritual lives. Something to be valued now as stress is one of the top five causes to health breakdown. 20th April, Easter Sunday is when we celebrate the renewal of our faith. Although there are some good trees, shrubs and perennials it does need a bit of a makeover and theCouncil has kindly allocated funds and asked the Nailsworth Gardening Group to mastermind this. Rather than spendmoney on labour, they felt it would be more productive to have a community day weeding, clearing and replanting. He is part of agroup of musicians who work with the guitarist Robert Fripp, developing a unique tuning, playing method and repertoire. They have been playing different places around the world forthe last 25 years and are now booked to play the last night ofthe Nailsworth festival. As this will be the first time they have played in the UK sincethe late 1980s, it is a small - but perfectly formed - coup for the town! The Berlin Guitar Ensemble, a group of guitarists fromall over the world (including Nailsworth!) working underthe direction of Hernn Nuez, will be playing on the lastSaturday of the Festival. The BGEs line up is always changing, moving from7 to 24 players, and so is the repertoire: including owncompositions, rock standards and traditional, classical andfolk pieces. All the players use the Guitar Craft tuning, which has a much wider sonic spectrum than the standardand which brings an innovative sound to the guitar. With just a few weeks of the season left, it would be silly to tempt fate, but out of the eight teams playing in various leagues, two of them are going for glory at the top of Div. 2 and one is struggling to escape relegation from Div. 3. Apart from that it has been a challenging season trying to maintain players in all our teams, but everyone has been great in playing for other teams when required. So all our other teams look to have maintained their positions and are now looking forward to a stronger showing next season. We also hosted the semi finals of the Albert Mann Cup (a handicap knock out competition). This means that Forest Green A will play Whiteshill Vets B in the Final at Nailsworth Youth club on Monday 7 April. An interesting match as Forest Green are top of Div 1 and Whiteshill are top of Div 4; but handicaps will be applied! Nailsworth Phoenix Table Tennis Club is always looking for new players for next season and will be open all summer for practice on Saturday mornings and one evening (still to be decided) during the week. Sport Sport Sport Forest Green Rovers Every year about this time, footie fans the world over suddenly become highly skilled in mental arithmetic. Whether it be the Premier League or the Conference where FGRplay, we are all brilliant in working out zillions of permutations about who will be champions, who will make the play-offs, who will be relegated, who will ... ? For many seasons it was, If we beat X, and if Y gets a draw, and if the sun sets over the yardarm about 6pm, then we may escaperelegation ... But this season is a little different. If the team wins its (now) one game in hand, then FGR sits happily in the play-off zone. If FGR hadnt been so lack-lustre against Braintree recentlywhen they lost unexpectedly, when the momentum should have been there without a managers cajoling; if a glut of silly sendingsoff hadnt hindered progress ... If ... If the mathematicians get their sums right and more goals are scored than let in, then FGR will win matches and get that play-off slot. Whether the team is really good enough to be there, one will only find out when the pressure is really upon them. Is the team goodenough, yet, to get out of this League. The defence has been veryshaky and leaked sillygoals and althoughthere is a large, experienced squad(we are consistently told), is the character there to make a serious push to go further? Certainly the fine win against play-off hopefuls Grimsby was superb for so many reasons but every match now is that proverbialCup Final At this stage of the season with all to look forward to, there is no way that any more poor performances can be put in. Playing 5 games in 11 days is no excuse at this or any level andit has no effect on the supporters. At least miracles do happen andwith Easter just around the corner, we may see another miracle.
