NCLT Unique Venture for Nailsworth! You will have read about the Nailsworth Community LandTrust (NCLT) in previous issues. This group of volunteers is now makingreal progress towards building its firsthomes for local people, homes to be letat an affordable rent. It is unique in that it will be the firstsuch group aiming to by-pass thegovernments regulations which insiston allowing tenants the right to buytheir homes and so take them out of public ownership. In order to do thisthe scheme needs the support of thecommunity. There will be a local Referendum when you will be able toshow your support or otherwise. We hope you will vote in favour, so it is important that we let everybody knowwhat is going on. The houses we build are intended to help to provide reasonable-cost housingfor those with Nailsworth connections, housing which will remain availablefor people who want to stay in theircommunity. The housing survey of2013 identified a need for 52 such homes. This initial venture by theNCLT should contribute about 6 to 8 appropriate units. At present the NCLT has about 180 members and a steering group of adozen or so volunteers. Initially ithas been formed with the support ofNailsworth Town Council, but the next move will be to establish it as a separate body, independent from theCouncil but, the CLT will really benefitfrom more members and anybodywho lives or works in Nailsworth can become a member. Others can become Friends. To join you need to fill in a formand contribute 1*. Forms are available at the Nailsworth Town Information Centre by theLibrary, or you can join on-line on theCLT website (see end of article). *1 refundable in the unlikely event ofthe closure of the CLT. What has been achieved so far? 1. Stroud District Council has voted to agree to sell us a piece of land atthe bottom of Lawnside for 1. 2. We have appointed Aster Homes of Devizes to be in charge of buildingthe homes. They have experienceof such schemes. www.asterhomes. co.uk. 3. After interviewing several goodcontenders we have appointedColin Powell of gcp Architects to design and build the homes. Proposed designs will be ondisplay and available for publicconsultation later in the year. 4. We have appointed BattensSolicitors Ltd, who are experiencedwith this type of work, to act for us. 5. We are taking steps to make theCLT independent of the Town Council as a non-charitable Community Benefit Societyfollowing the National CLT Model. Details of the Referendum and news of further progress will be published in theNailsworth News over the next few months. Myles Robinson, Mayor of Nailsworth Local Affairs As the General Election in early May gets closer, it gives me an opportunity to remindresidents of Nailsworth that we too also have an election on that day to choose eleventown councillors. I have been a town councillor for five years and will be seekingre-election. I expect a numberof existing councillors will dolikewise, but we are alwayskeen to have new peoplestanding and to providecompetition for places. It is only at the first councilmeeting in May that councillors elect the Mayor, so there could be competition for that position as well. Councillors have an exciting time ahead implementing theNailsworth Town Action Plan 2015 to 2020 which includes some challenging and I am sure interesting proposals forexisting and new councillors. The Community Land Trust has been formed and now has a site in Lawnside Forest Green to build eight affordable homes for local people. When considering environmental issues, we have a challenge to makethe town safer for all and are making progress on providinggreater speed restrictions, and we are considering pedestrianprioritization in parts of the town centre. Also in the plan is a proposal to increase the car parking close to the town centre. I was asked last month to explain the Town Councils policy on car parking and it is worth repeating again. The council is opposed to any charging for parking vehicles on the highway or in municipal spaces. In fact part of the land used for parkingin The Old Market was gifted to the town by Mr Pavey Smith for free parking. Your council is in favour of limited time parking so that each vehicle parked is representing trade andprosperity to our town. We are therefore seeking new spaces, slightly away from the centre for additional vehicle parkingfor those who work in town, thus releasing more short term spaces. The Town Action Plan aims to improve the recreational and leisure facilities for us all, particularly with a possiblecommunity park at Miles Marling Field and with the buildingof the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). The proposed new Civic Centre adjoining the Library in Old Market will releasespace in the existing Town Hall for a new Centre for the Arts. Services offered by the Town Council will be more assessable in the centre of town and the New Arts Centre could provide a modern auditorium for theatre, cinema and lectures as well as art gallery space. I can report that my post bag is alreadygetting filled with interest in the Art Centre, so additional councillors to make it happen would be great. The recent planning application for 17 houses in Pike Lanebrought letters of objection from over 800 and thankfullythe application was refused. Your council is now considering whether to adopt a Neighbourhood Development Planwhich might add extra protection to prevent development ininappropriate locations. Here is another task for the councillorselected in May. myles.robinson@nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.ukphone 01453 836828 Nailsworth News Egg Hunt! He has been involved with the production anddistribution of the paper since issue 4 and has Wait all day for a Bus and and How Many Come AlongAt Once? C C llr Anne Eliott Writes In November the decided that it is time to trysomething new. We, as a team, are saddened by this news. If itaint broke, dont fix it and Don has seamlessly provided a smooth oiled wheel with this function for so long - it has been one less thing to worry about! The team are therefore seeking for a volunteer to take on the roleis of deliverer in chief. The delivery team consists of some 70 individuals, some of whom deliver 150 and some less than 20 copies. There are 5 bulk deliverers who distribute packages to 60 addresses and a further 3 who deliverto the local offices and shops. Another key to the organisation is Maureen Emburey who assists by sorting out the paperson distribution day and Ken Culham who covers when required. Maureen and Ken (and Dons wife Veronica who provides postal copies) intend to continue. Essentially, the job entails a couple of hours a month updating a data-base of information and oneFriday for 10 months of the year organising the delivery. The Friday delivery usually takes about two hours, but longer if there are complications. The new Distributor will be a member of the papers management team. The major changes were that the buses no longer went round Nortonwood as Stagecoach said that there was notime within the new schedule to do so. The direct service to Cheltenham was also cut. This was not widely publicised and there was no consultation by Stagecoach with passengers who would be affected. Residents of Nortonwood especially have been severely disadvantaged by these changes. I have been in discussion with both Stagecoach and Gloucester County Council (GCC) stressing the effect that the withdrawal of this route has had on residents. I have asked that Stagecoach provide a service around Nortonwood again at least hourly. Since November there have been many times when the 63 has had waiting time as it is running early so this should be possible. Ive made Stagecoach and GCC aware of this and they have monitored the journeys and are in the process of looking at the results to see if they could go round Nortonwood again and still keep to time. I hope to hear the results of this very soon, but in the meantime Cotswold Green Buses are running a limited service round Nortonwood. The loss of the direct route to Cheltenham was made for sound business reasons Im afraid and I dont hold any hope that this can be reinstated. However, Ive raised the issue of the poor connection between the 63 and the 61 service for Cheltenham in Stroud; Stagecoach told me last week that they are looking at improving this by tweaking the schedule. Hopefully, this will reduce the waiting time in Stroud. If I cant achieve a satisfactory outcome there will be a Public Meeting arranged to which Stagecoach will be invited so that the community can voice their concerns, but if anyone wants to make their individual difficulties known to Stagecoach they can write to or email : Rupert Cox (rupert.cox@stagecoachbus.com) Ben Cole (ben.cole@stagecoachbus.com), Managers at Stagecoach in Gloucester. There is an inner circle at Applied Change of five including co-Director Simon Stapletonand Amanda White (who keeps everythingtogether Marks words, not ours!). There are many examples of IT projects which started as a good idea (and examplesof projects which never had good ideapotential) which outgrew their original remit, took on a life of their own, grew like Topsy and ultimately collapsed in expensive ruin. Sometimes by the time of the collapse theoriginal remit had also changed and theessential coupling between the IT project and the business it was designed to serve hadstretched to breaking point. Businesses dont stand still while an increasingly obsolete ITdevelopment happens. Enter Mark and his associates. We went because our topic is about the circus. So we watched a man, who was called Paul, show us some clever tricks. Then he taught the class and me some. Have you been to the circus before? First, when we arrived, Paul introduced himself and also the circus objects. Then he told us some safety rules. A couple of minutes later, he said, So our circus object today is Flower-sticks! Everyone laughed with joy. Excitedly, everyone got up and galloped towards the box full of bright, big, colourful Flower-sticks. So we all got two orange sticks and a Flower-stick and star ted to use them both! After that, when we had been taught some tricks we had free-time. It was for trying out new circus tricks. During free-time, I tried out spinning plates, diablos and the opposite bike! Going on a circus workshop was surprisingly fun! Why dont you go on a circus workshop? Its really fun! By Nevaya Ostle. After losing the lovely Eilidh to the BigCity, where she has gone to be the shining success that we all knew she was destined to be (NN is wishing you the best of luckEilidh!), I hope to be taking over Youth Matters and keeping you all informedand updated on the latest actions andevents taking place amongst the youngergeneration of Nailsworth. Having grown up in the area, I liketo consider myself a true local andwill always stay loyal to my belovedNailsworth. I am still in education, studying for my A Levels at Cirencester College, but have also worked at No.28for over a year, enabling me to get to know so many of Nailsworths residents, whilst also getting to hear quite a bit ofthe gossip not that we are a gossipingtown of course! I have always been a keen reader of NNand love the fact we always stay true tothe town; never venturing too far out, keeping it local. However, after noticing the loss of Youth Matters, I decided to put my name forward as the new youthrepresentative I believe its important not to allow a divide between the different generations, inorder to keep thetown runningsmoothly andhave everyoneworking together. Of course, I have premeditatedideas of what I want/think needs to be discussed, howeverI would love to receive any contributionsfrom our readers: maybe you want tohear what the younger generation has tosay about something youre concernedwith, perhaps you would like to promotesomething you believe can benefit youths, or you might just want to know aboutwhat Nailsworth has to offer for young people. Any concerns/ideas, please share them with me! I look forward to hearing yourthoughts and hope I can make a worthycontribution towards the community. Horsley Primary School We have really been getting into the swing of classical music here at Horsley Primary as we embark on our annual Arts Week. Inspired by the BBCs Ten Pieces each class has selected two special pieces from the repertoire and used theseto inspire their own creativity something we do very wellhere at Horsley. Owls class (years 5 & 6) have been practising a whole classcomposition of Beethovens Symphony No.5, while Otters (years 3 & 4) have been inspired by Brittens Storm interlude from Peter Grimes and have painted a fantastic stormy backdrop to go with their performance using instruments theyhave made themselves. Other children have been inspiredto dance, paint and simply express themselves by feeling themusic and responding to the mood of the piece. All this was brought together at a special Showcase performance for parentsheld on February 12th. We recorded the event and have sent some chosen performances to theBBC. As well as the arts, sport has also playeda big part over thelast few weeks. There was the Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament held at the fantastic Inside Football facility at Brimscombe. Six of our children played in 4-aside matchesagainst five other local schools on the artificial grass pitchesand came second in their group after two wins, two draws anda defeat. The children all enjoyed showing off their newly learnt skills in tackling, defending, attacking and stick work. They also demonstrated great perseverance, commitment andtrust and worked superbly as a team. We were also represented at the Riddiford Shield football tournament also held at Inside Football in Brimscombe. The team gave an excellentperformance and competed well in each game, we were beatenby The Park and Nailsworth, but won our matches against Amberley and Chalford. A Spanish Perspective Nailsworth, nice to meet you The roads around Nailsworth, amongst agreen landscape of rolling hills and lush trees, deceive the imagination of the traveller. Atraveller, who has in mind a small English town, or village, with stone houses, and surelya scarce supply of activities, would find thisto be compensated by the tranquillity of thecountryside, if this were what they werelooking for. However, the traveller is wrong; I was wrong. My first walks through the main streets of Nailsworth made me believe that a few hours would suffice to know this town in the English countryside. That was how it seemed. The construction of Spanish villages is different. Shops, bars, parks or natural areas are builtamongst the houses of the inhabitants. Therefore, I was surprised at the number of stores that were in just two streetsand I assumed that there would not be We heard from Kim Brown who writes under the pen nameof K B Mallion. I recently hosted a big online release party, it ran from the Friday to the Sunday, with many other fellow indie authors fromthe UK, Ireland, USA and Australia. However, a lot of local lovelies have been loving Jonny Riley from AFamous Affair... including quite a few mums from my childrens school! Many people have been requesting thatI sign their paperbacks, hence why Idecided to hold this signing. I got a phone call from one of my staff who had popped in at first light for something on her way to look after her grandson for the day to tell me Id better come quick. I arrived to find that hundreds of gallons of hot water had come through the ceilingfrom a burst boiler in the flat upstairs. After shutting off the stop-cock - luckily the one for the whole building is in my shopunder the stairs - I wandered around in a daze not quite knowing where to start. By thetime Id been around my neighbours in the street borrowing head-torches, extension leads and a wet and dry hoover, Chloe had arrived armed with coffee and muffins for my shell shock, and we set-to getting all the ruined stock outside into the back yard. Within half an hour four or five customers had come to the shop and just rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help. It was so moving I was almost in tears, their kindness and willingness was so great, andby lunchtime all the damaged stuff was outside. It was a bit hard then, as I was left on my own and ithad started to feel very cold and dark and damp, but thegoodwill of customers kept my spirits up (to a degree) and the day ended not exactly as it had begun, butconsiderably better than it might have been if Id been on my own. Without all that help and support we might wellnot have been able to open again on Monday, albeit somewhat dishevelled. Im so glad I live and work in thisfriendly little community. We are happy to report that the shop is now nearly backto its normal busy self, although there are still quite a few gaps on the shelves. Wed 29 April Film Matine Wed 18 March, 2.30 So many people have helped todevelop this bright, warm and wellequipped building into a vibrantcentre, which brings people togetherfrom the top and bottom parts ofNailsworth. We have learned to make use of every corner, and have been able to tap into the talent and resourcefulnessof Nailsworth residents; but there is much more that we can do . . . ! PreparingfortheQuiltShow St. Georges Dear Friends, Already the year seems to begalloping away! March is often a month when we see things beginning to changeas new life comes to our gardensit is also a month which, in the Christian Church, contains three very contrasting Sundays. Mothering Sunday on March 15th used to be the Sunday onwhich those in service were allowed home to visit their Mothers with gifts of simnelcake and the like. Today we use it as an opportunity to say thankyou for our Mothers living anddeparted which we shall bedoing in our churches. Passion Sunday on March 22nd is the Sunday on which we beginto turn our thoughts to the events nearly two thousand years ago aswe see Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem and (in the words of Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise) boldly go where no manhad gone before. Palm Sunday on March 29th is a Sunday of mixed emotions. We join with the crowd to celebrate Jesus entering Jerusalem to be hailedas King, but knowing it marked the beginning of the end of his lifeon earth and heralded the awful events of his arrest, torture and murder. This year the churches of Nailsworth, Horsley and Kingscote will gather together in St Georges, Nailsworth to celebrate Palm Sunday and prepare for the memorial events of the last week ofJesus life. Perhaps you would like to join us on one or more of these specialdays and discover something more about the incredible story of Jesuslife on earth. With every blessingMike Rev. Mike Smith now has a new address and telephone contact. The Vicarage, 3 Vicarage Gardens, Nailsworth GL6 0Q 01453 836536 [Ed Note - do ask Mike why he is a butterfly . . . and let me know the answer.] Faith and Service Faith and Service Christ Church Well, here it is. My first contribution to Nailsworth News. I have to tell you that I am alreadyloving being here and Im lookingforward to getting to know lots ofyou. But for now - Lent is here! Did you enjoy your pancakes? My favourite way of eating Britishpancakes is still with lemon andsugar. But I have discovered American pancakes and they aredefinitely good topped with thingsthat are bad for me. Im writing this before Lent begins soperhaps thats what I should give up. Except its also one of the things I like best. Well, they say no pain no gain and my waist-line would certainly benefit from it! Lent is about recognising the things we do that are badfor us and then trying to do something about it by givingit up. Many Christians also take the opportunity to ADD something to their lives. Admittedly that isnt normally an extra portion of American pancakes. But, it is something that will help us. And just like choosing what we give up for Lent, we can choose what we add into our lives. Some choose to add particular daily Bible readings orextra prayer time (or actually might begin to pray regularly). Others might choose to do something to help the localcommunity. Whatever is chosen, the idea is that it is a conscious decision to behave in a way that we believe God wants. How about adding something to your life? You could do something in the community. You could revisit that lapsed New Years resolution and get fitter. You could even get in touch with me and ask how you can find out more aboutwho God is and what he wants - theres no obligation and its free! Lesleyand Roy Bircher, Catherine and Peter Rushton and Judith and Les Haines started fund-raising almost ten years agoand since then, with the support of friendsand local businesses, have raised almost 20,000 for deserving causes. The team was invited to visit the operational base of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) at Filton. After touring the base a cheque for 920was presented to the helicopter crew, paramedic and one of their fund-raisers. Last October GWAAC took delivery of a new EC135 helicopter which is now part of the 999 emergency response service covering the region includingGloucestershire. As the charity receives no day to day funding from the Government or the National Lottery they rely entirely on the generosity of the people they serve to continue operating. A few weeks later a cheque for the same amount was handed over at a presentation evening for Cobalt Health. Recently Cobalt completed the first phase of its 50th Anniversary Appeal enabling it to build, install and commission a new PET/CT scanner at Cheltenham. The scanner will enable them to be leading research providersand to offer a unique clinical service to patients. Nailsworth Dramatic Society presents Agatha ChristieAfter the success of Fawlty Towers in November, NDS return to the Town Hall stagein March with another classic; an AgathaChristie whodunit called Witness for the Prosecution This was one of Christies most popularplays and ahuge success when first performed on theLondon stage in the 1950s. It is a story with several twists and turnsthat keeps you guessing until the very end. Who did kill wealthy Emily French? Was it burglars? The young gentleman caller? HisGerman wife? The Gyrotonic System is based on movement principles from yoga, dance, t'ai FGR Winners! Mike Willis was very pleasantly surprised and delighted to wintwo tickets for a VIP Experience at FGR. He entered the competition via The Non-League FootballPaper, sponsored jointly with Vanarama who are the sole sponsors of the Conference leagues. Mike lives in Oxford and was a little perplexed asto how to enjoy his scoopsince his wife was not an ardent football fan. Enter Gordon Jones who (as a FGR supporter, a friend, and Nailsworth resident) was delighted to accept the vacant ticket which gave them a lot of goodies! Goodies included free car park space, VIP seats in the stand or to view from the Carol Embrey suite, pre-dinner complimentarydrink, dinner at a reserved table, match programme, refreshments and cake at half time. Post match our gentlemen were able to meet some of the playersand Man of the Match, with photos courtesy of Bruce Fenn. Additional bonus on that day was a welcome and prizedopportunity of a photo with Dale Vince. Mikes comments reference his vegetarian fare was that, I would endorse the food. Some moan that it is veggie stuff, but that was a great veggie burger. Gordon couldnt comment since his face was filled with a splendid beer battered hake with thespeciality chips. Photo opportunities made the day complete with the appearanceof the Baker Brothers. The match itself had ended 1-0 in FGR favour against Nuneatonwhich just added to the glory of the event. Gordon said he would be back to his regular season ticket seatnow, hoping for Mike to pull off another win. Local News photo by Bruce Fenn. Gordon (L) and Mike (R) Boules Following on from previous news about the new Boules pitch in KGV, it is apparent that there are a number who would like to be part of new teams and perhaps play in some kind of informalleague and see how things can progress. Perhaps there can be junior and senior teams or other permutations for the future! The area is already well used and some players have also improved the boundaries of one court area - thankyou! Now we bite our nails in the hope that the team keeps scoring in orderto make a final push for the play-offs and subsequent promotion! It will be a tall order maintaining the momentum, but it now looksa serious possibility. The very fine win against high-flying Grimsby recently in front of a big crowd showed the fans that FGR can competewell against the strongest and also play well in the process. Not that one can be complacent - Russell in goal was Man of theMatch - that says quite a lot! Defence still needs attention, but themidfield is playing with more stature and with Parkin hitting the target Face in the Crowd. Is this YOU?
