Scouting! Although the Nailsworth and ForestGreen Scouts move to new premisesseems to be on hold for the moment, it hasnt stopped them from carrying on their normal routine. They were recently caught on camera starting off on a 24 hour expedition into the unknown somewhere around Nympsfield and the woods behindWoodchester. Navigation and map reading skills along with camping and surviving the night inthe wilds of Gloucestershire all on army rations, were all part of the exercise andthe scouts certainly looked cheerful and well prepared for this adventure. If we eversee this intrepid group again, we will try and get a report of their adventure alongwith a photo or two! We heard from a reader who is becoming increasingly frustrated with inconsiderate parkers at George Street Car Park. . . . not one to normally complain, but I ambecoming increasingly more irate at drivers with clearly nochildren or evidence of children (ie no car seats or boosters) in their cars taking up valuable spaces clearly marked forparents with children. These bays are designed to be wider to make life easier to get access to our kids, they are notsupposed to be used by inconsiderate people that think itis just easier and not so far for them to walk to facilities. Basically this is plain idleness and lack of consideration. Our reader took a photograph on a Tuesday evening of a driver who had many bays to choose from, evidently had no kids and promptly parked in one reserved for this purpose. Annual Town Meeting Monday 20 April 2015 7pm in Nailsworth Town Hall An opportunity for residents to hearreports from the towns groups and organisations, and to question Councillors. Nailsworth General Election Hustings The upcoming General Election on May 7th is oneof the most open elections that we have had in recent years. Election experts are unable to tell us which party willwin and which party will form the government. The way we vote in the Stroud Constituency willhelp determine which party wins. The way we vote will also determine what kind of country we want tohave, and therefore it is important to understand theissues involved. These include: the economy, the size of the state, the NHS, how our schools are run, creatingenough housing, the role of the public sector, dealing with climate change and our relationships with othercountries in the world. In Nailsworth we will have the opportunity to putquestions to the candidates of the main political parties at a Hustings to be held on Thursday April 23rd at 7.30 pm at Christ Church, Newmarket. This is an open meeting to which all residents are invited. Questions to be put to the candidates should be sentbefore to the meeting to the Chairman, the Rev. Keepingto time is a must for the Company and the buses do have somedifficulty getting out of the junctions at Old Market and the A46 at peak times. So a half hourly service will run again at off peak times - 10.00am to 3.30pm - during the week. On Saturdays and Sundays all scheduledbuses will go round the estate. The withdrawal of this service has impacted on the lives of many peopleliving in Nortonwood who rely on the buses. A lot of folk found that getting up the steep incline to the main road to get the bus was impossible and left themfeeling cut off not even being able to get to the doctor or do their shopping. Some have even put their homes up for sale. So this will be a great relief to them. Although the direct service from Forest Green to Cheltenham cant be restored, the connection in Stroud will be much improved so that there will be time to change, butwithout a long wait. On Sundays, the 63 from Nailsworth will become the 61 in Stroud and go through toCheltenham so a change of bus will not be necessary and there will only be a short wait inStroud. There will still be no direct route through to Gloucester on a Sunday, but again, the connection in Stroud will be improved. New timetables will be available from mid-April and the changes will come into effect from 10th May. This is great news and has shown the value of discussion and consultation when proposingservice changes that affect so many peoples lives. Thanks go to Stagecoach for listeningand restructuring their schedules to provide this service once more. Local Affairs Page Egg Count GYROTONIC IN THE FIELDS! I wrote to Stagecoach back inOctober to complain about the loss of this service and also theridiculously short time allowed for changeover at Stroud on alternate busservices. After 6 weeks and two reminders I finally received a reply (in fact two separate replies) to my complaint. The gist of both replies was that the loss of the 46 service from Nailsworth was based on the results of a passenger survey which showed that the 93 Gloucester service wasfar more popular than the 46 Cheltenham service. When I replied that this was not in accord with my own (admittedly limited) observationand asked to see the results of the survey I was told that they werecommercially sensitive. It seems to me that if Stagecoach want thepublic to accept the change in scheduling they should provide directevidence of the need rather than hiding behind rather bland statements ofcommerciality. We will initially meet in the Mortimer Room but the venue may change in June. Changeswill be notified! Jo Limbrick Group Facilitator 5 Weve told you about some of the apprentices who work in and around Nailsworth. Lets introduce you to another young man, Jack Davis. Jack, who comes from Tetbury and whose father is a game keeper, is well on the way to completing a five-year apprenticeship with Country Quality Meats, the butchers in Old Market. Jack left school at 16. He had already started his apprenticeship when his school exams came up he was persuaded to sit them, but the results were less than spectacular because he felt hed found what he wanted to do and those exams werent important. There are some things you need to master as an apprentice butcher before theyll let you touch the actual meat. First of these is hygiene, incredibly important and something you need strictly to observe every hour of every working day. The second is the tool kit. Mincers, slicers and the butchers knives command respect and you need to learn how to handle them and how to keep them sharp. They are unforgiving and youve only got a limited number of fingers! Jacks apprenticeship doesnt involve external schooling although there is an independent assessment of his grasp of hygiene rules and regulations. And so on to the meat. (Vegetarians can skip the next bit). Country Quality Butchers is a very good place to learn the trade because they handle beef, lamb, pork, poultry and game, each requiring its separate skills. We sometimes use the word butcher to imply making a mess of something, making a pigs ear of it. Actual butchering is much more in the silk-purse-from-a-sows-ear category. Youve got the carcass; you cant make it all into filet steak, but the name of the game is to convert as much of it as possible into high value, saleable products. And that takes skill and experience. So Jack will have started on cheaper cuts, on mincemeat and sausage making before he graduated to the more prestigious joints and steaks. Therell inevitably been some mistakes and some being shouting at along the way, but now Jack is very much part of the team and a cheery lot they are at Country Quality. He likes it and the work and Paul Dowdeswell, the manager who has mentored Jack during the last years, looks forward to having him as a permanent member of that team. I would ask all residents to remember to walk their boundaries not only from inside their property but also outside, to check that trees and bushes are not growing across the highway. Yesterday the Highways Authority sent contractors through Box, cutting the grass on overgrown verges, but recent austerity measures means that this service has now been reduced to only twice a year, and does not include overhanging shrubs or trees, as these are the responsibility of the land owner. This beautiful village is characterised by narrow lanes bounded by stone walls, but if trees and bushes are allowed to excessively overhang the highway, there is a significant risk that passing vehicles will become entangled with the branches, resulting in a partial collapse of the wall. So next time youre walking around your garden, it might be worth remembering that there are no fairies at the bottom, at least none with secateurs! Sally Cullen-Bond opened her business in Stonehouse seven years ago, and now that Lotfi Cherif has become a joint business partner, the opportunity arose to open their second barbers here in town. These entrepreneurs are photographed on front page. Lotfi will be very much the face of the Nailsworth wing and with his 20 years of experience both here and in his home country of Tunisia, you are assured of a professional and friendly approach to his work. Asked why this style of barbers would succeed, the answer was simple. We are the only traditional barber around where there are no appointments, you just walk in, have your cut and go! Indeed, there is no hair washing or pampering, but the quality of cut is of a high standard in clean, bright and modern surroundings. If you want a traditional wet shave, then you can have that too! The Barber Shop is open six days a week from 8.30am - 5.30pm (Saturdays 8 - 3). Prices from 10.00 / children 8.00. Wet shave: 10.00. Call in for more information and that cut or phone: 834036. And, if you want the history of the barbers pole, ask Lotfi for the answer! Business Page Egg Count Baileys News had something like ten shops across the region. Latterly they have been selling off individual shops and our Baileys in Old Market has been sold. It has been bought by a company called K & G. The company is named for Mr Kirkby and his half-brother Mr. Griffin. We talked to Alistair Griffin (right). Alistair is very much a Nailsworth man, his family going back several generations in the town. He managed the Nailsworth One Stop Shop which was taken over by Tesco. He went on to manage the Nailsworth Tesco before leaving to branch out on his own. Together with his brother they bought up a vacant shop site in Stroud and opened a convenience store, K & G, across the road from Walkers Bakery. This has flourished and now hes coming back to his home town to add a second shop. Alistairs is the face the customers will see and itll be his vision which well see coming to life. His brother works behind the scenes, keeping the books, paying the bills and managing the VAT returns. So what will we see? For a start well see the same staff with - the sole exception of Paul wholl stay with Baileys, becoming full time manager of their Dursley shop, instead of splitting his time between Nailsworth and Dursley. (And, yes, hell still be playing the organ at St Georges). Therell be new name over the door and therell be some changes to the layout of the shop and to the range of stock carried; the successful core business of magazines, newspapers and cards will still be there as will the various services like the Lottery, bill paying facilities, parcel handling and the like. The newspaper delivery side will also continue. Alistairs credo is to find out what his customers want and, if its at all possible, to provide it. The other side of this coin is that if particular product lines arent selling - dont waste shelf space stocking them. These are decisions he can make quickly; there are no head office directives to observe on stock or pricing he is the head office. Well actually see a lot of Alistair. He wants to get to know his customers and, with time, many of us will be greeted by name. In summary all that weve valued in terms of stock and service will still be there with, gradually, more beside. Business Last month we told you about Hands on Harps and introduced you to Greag and Morwenna and gave you an incorrect phone number; it should havebeen 07961 512 428. Morwenna is a harpist working in SouthGloucestershire and offers her services for individual music therapy sessions for residents of care homes. She reminds us that Sadly, some elderly people arebed-ridden, dont leave their rooms, and have little stimulation in their lives. This she has witnessed in her husbands grandmother, who is immobile and despite the best efforts of family members who visither every day, sadly spends a lot of her time looking at a wall. She has no interest intelevision. For the past year we have visited her regularly, and we have noticed that when I take my harp and play to her, she becomes more animated than she otherwise would be. Often certain songs will trigger smiles or nostalgic tears. For someone who rarelycommunicates in any way at all, my husband finds this very profound. It is this thathas motivated me to offer my services to others. Morwenna plays traditional Celticand Old English folk songs. She plays a 31 string Clarsach (folk harp) which is small enough to rest on a bed orchair, and can also enable residents to experience the harp very directly by runningtheir hands along the strings themselves (with a little help from if needs be). This could be a wonderful experience for someone you know and love but nowsadly bedridden. Remember, the harp is the instrument of choice for angels. Baileys News had something like ten shops acrossthe region. Latterly they have been selling off individual shops andour Baileys in Old Market has been sold. It has been bought by a company called K & G. The company isnamed for Mr Kirkby and his half-brother Mr. Griffin. We talked to Alistair Griffin (right). Alistair is very much a Nailsworth man, his family going backseveral generations in the town. He managed the Nailsworth OneStop Shop which was taken over by Tesco. He went on to managethe Nailsworth Tesco before leaving to branch out on his own. Together with his brother they bought up a vacant shop site inStroud and opened a convenience store, K & G, across the road fromWalkers Bakery. This has flourished and now hes coming back tohis home town to add a second shop. Alistairs is the face the customers will see and itll be his vision which well see coming to life. His brother works behind the scenes, keeping the books, paying the bills and managing the VAT returns. So what will we see? For a start well see the same staff with - the sole exception of Paul wholl stay with Baileys, becoming full timemanager of their Dursley shop, instead of splitting his time betweenNailsworth and Dursley. (And, yes, hell still be playing the organat St Georges). Therell be new name over the door and therell be some changes to the layout of the shop and to the range of stockcarried; the successful core business of magazines, newspapers andcards will still be there as will the various services like the Lottery, bill paying facilities, parcel handling and the like. The newspaperdelivery side will also continue. Alistairs credo is to find out what his customers want and, if its at all possible, to provide it. The other side of this coin is that if particular product lines arent selling - dont waste shelf spacestocking them. These are decisions he can make quickly; there areno head office directives to observe on stock or pricing he is thehead office. Well actually see a lot of Alistair. He wants to get to know hiscustomers and, with time, many of us will be greeted by name. Insummary all thatweve valued in terms of stock and service will still be there with, gradually, more beside. Not only werethey doing their absolutebest with some very goodresults, but they were alsofashioning the new school sportsshirts. In addition to this some of the children from St. Dominics have also been involved in the Primary Schools Cross CountryEvents this week at Stratford Park. This has been a huge success for ourchildren as for some it is their first time competing outside of school insuch an event. French Caf The school threw open its doors inFebruary to all parents and locals as it changed from a schoolwith classes to a school that had a French Caf! Over 300 croissants, pain au chocolat andpan au raisin were devoured in 2 hours. This was washed down with copious cups of jus du orange and caf au lait. This gave thechildren lots of practise of what they learn in our French curriculumand will prepare them for the possibility of any French visitors fromNailsworths twin town of Leves. CountryDancing FeteWe are thrilled to have attended the Stroud Schools CountryDance Festival on March 19th and the biggestexcitement for us is that it is our youngestand smallest children that represented the school at this event. The children had been working hard busy counting beats and ensuringthat they do not miss their cue for many weeks before. A big thankyou must go to Maggie Atthey our dance instructor and the MrsJones our EYFS teacher who have been skipping down the corridorssince. Briege Ward -Head Teacher - 832682 Schools Horsley PrimarySchool Friday 13th March was Comic ReliefRed Nose Day so the children raisedmoney by paying 1 to come toschool either dressed as a clown, with a mad hair-do or simply not in schooluniform. We also raised money forthis fantastic charity by selling cakes and lemonade at break time. Another annual event that we have participated in recently wasWorld Book Day and for a change this year it was decided not todress up as our favourite book characters but instead to take partin a book swap where children brought in books from home thatthey had read and swapped them for another. There was lots of storytelling across the school, with a focus on stories from aroundthe world and we also held a special assembly dedicated to the loveof books. Our children continue to enjoy a good range of sporting activities. Last week, despite the bitter wind, eight keen children competed inthe Stroud Football League with matches played against Nailsworthand Woodchester schools. Well done to Sam, Cameron, Stanley, Felix R, Felix K, Charlie, Jake and only girl on the team, Maddie. Our netball team have also been in action when they played against CallowellB recently. Marcus and Nell pulledoff some excellent interceptions andall team playersworked really hardto secure a 4-0 win. We are all very excited to see our newplayground project slowly coming tofruition. After consultation with the children we invited five companies totender for the work to provide a suitablenew adventure play area to replace LogWorld. The shortlist of designs were shownto each class and luckily there was anoverwhelming preference in all age groupsfor our final choice. The children are now very keen to get playing as soon as possible. The Friends of Horsley School has alreadypledged 6,000 and we continue to applyfor grants to help fund the work. We were delighted to receive a300 donation from Renishaw for which we thank them very much. Dont you just love it fluffy bunnies, spring lambs andchocolate eggs. But before we come over all scrooge-like (yes, I know its the wrong season forthat) there is somemerit in these symbols. The Easter eggis a tasty way ofrepresenting a realegg looks like astone, yet containsthe potential new life of a chick. Jesus lifeless body was laid in a stone tomb having been properly wrapped forburial. There was no doubt in the minds of friends and foe that he was dead. Problem sorted, thought some. Dreamover, thought others. Yet Gods love proved so powerful that even death was not strong enough to overcome it. The one and only thing that humans will never conquer was defeated once and forall by Gods love as Jesus was brought back to new life. The Easter Egg reminds us of the unlikely yet miraculoustruth that Jesus was alive again. And that gives us hope for our future after death. So lets enjoy the eggs! But what about bunnies and lambs? Once again, they aremeant to represent new life at this time. If you have everwatched new born lambs or rabbits in a field, they seemto spend most of their time tearing around jumping andenjoying the freedom of the field and the open air. Maybe we can learn from them to let our hair down atthis time and really celebrate the joy andwonder of Easter. Wishing you all a joyful Easter Rev. Mike Smith Faith and Service Christ Church How did giving it up for Lent go? Some of us succeeded, some of us were less successful. Either way, Easter is upon us and by Sunday evening there will be lots of people enjoying lots of things or perhaps not. Perhaps youve decided that whatever you gave up you can do without. Go for it aslong as it isnt causing harm. Sometimes we try things out for a while and thendecide to keep them its a way of making a new beginning, which seems appropriate at the startof April. After all, Spring is in the air, things are beginning to grow, the lambs are in the fields and, when the sun shines, it can feel like life is reallygood. New beginnings can be scary too particularly if they are the result of badnews. But good or bad, the main problem with every beginning is that wehave no idea where it will end. Well, we may have some hopes and plans, but we cant be certain. Weve a new beginning coming up right here in Nailsworth. Christ Church and St Georges are getting together to offer a worship time with a difference. On Sunday 26th April, at 6pm, One Voice begins. Launching at Christ Church (thats the big building opposite the surgery) its a time for those who like their worship to be lively, and possibly loud, with contemporary songs, prayer and a chance to discuss some questions about God. And then pizza. Weve no idea where our new beginning will take us. But were certain that we its something that needs to happen. Are you coming? Do you know someone who might like to come. Please tell them about it (they might notread things in as much detail as you do)! On Good Friday there is an opportunity to recall the last hour of Jesus life in a meditation of words, music and silence at 2.00 pm. Then we will celebrate the joy of Easter Day and Jesus new life in a service at 11.00 am. This is for all ages and will include Easter Eggs!! You will be made most welcome at any of these events at this most special time of year. Page EggCount Inequality of Access to HousingThe gap between rich and poor in housing is getting wider. Quakers have been thinking and working on this injustice for some time, and during May, at our national Yearly meeting, we will be exploring the issues further as part of a three year project on the theme of living our faith in the world. During April, in preparation, attendees at Nailsworth Meeting House are encouraged to partake in three informal workshops on this important issue. 176 raised at Womens World Day of PrayerThis year it was our turn to host this event, and together with women fromall the other faith communities in Nailsworth we celebrated women worldwide in a service arranged this year by women from the Bahamas. It was atime of closeness and sharing across a broad spectrum in prayer, singing and a gathered silence, with refreshments afterwards. Childrens activities included at all these services. The still voice: 350 years of Quakers in NailsworthMost people in Nailsworth probably have a rough idea ofwhere the Friends Meeting House is (just up Chestnut Hill on the left, in case you dont) but very few would know of the Friends Burial Ground, half a mile away up a lane behind the present playground in Shortwood. Both Meeting House andburial ground date back centuries; both are in current use. (We hold three weekly meetings for worship in the Meeting House, with childrens meetings on Sunday mornings). Heres a quick summary of the origin of these two places: the start of some 350 years of Quaker life in the town. The Religious Society of Friends, known as Quakers, aroseduring the turmoil in England following the Civil War of 164249. One of several dissenting groups that separated from theChurch of England at the time, they held that the spirit of God isaccessible to everyone, without the need for a priest. The first public meeting of Quakers in Gloucestershire tookplace in an open field. By then, Quakers across the countrywere being persecuted for their beliefs. Bailiffs took away their furniture and cattle. Some were beaten and imprisoned. In 1655, one of the travelling ministers of the new movement hada meeting in Painswick. Many who attended it from Nailsworthcame back convinced and continued a pattern of regular meetings at their homes, meeting in secret seeking to know theway of the truth. In Nailsworth, one such group met in the house of a mancalled William Beales. On 17th January 1660, soldiers took William and ten others from their homes to Gloucester prison. Their crimes? Refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the King and holding meetings for worship in their homes. The present Friends Meeting House, originally the barn attached to a farmhouse, was once such meeting place. The Burial Ground - a small L-shaped piece of sloping land, with agate in the wall was originally a plot belonging to one of the Quaker families who worshipped there. Our records tell us there are some twenty-fourburials in this space, only some of them marked with a stone. (From the commitment tosimplicity, many Quaker graves in the past had nostones and those that did, had brief inscriptions or none). Our new information board by the gate welcomes visitorsto sit and enjoy the peacethere. The verse we chose to describe this peace may ringa bell with some visitors as part of a well-known hymn. An appeal to each of us tolisten through the noise ofour lives for the still small voice of calm, it was written by John Greenleaf Whittier, a 19th century Quaker poet. This year, we are taking advice from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust as to how best we continue to look after this precious place. As to the Meeting House (open to visitors seven days a week), work is developingto create a peace garden. All are welcome at our meetings for worship which are; Wednesdays; 11-11.30am, Sundays; 9-9.30am and 10.3011.30am, except on the first Sunday; 10-10.30am followed by the meeting for worship for business. Here we go again! Fresh from the battle for Pike Lane Meadow comes skirmishes around Lower Newmarket Road in Newmarket, where a greenfield site has been significantly mauled by diggers. This time we believe the mover and shaker is Clearwater Properties Ltd- the developer who wasresponsible for most of thenew-builds in the area in the last decade or so. In 2008 a Planning Inspectorthrew out an Appeal by this developer, who was trying to build 9 houses on this piece of greenfield land, which is outside the settlement boundary of Newmarket. Now, seven years later, the land has been scraped back, and is clearly more than just scrub clearance. It looks more like preparations for construction. SDC Planning Enforcement has been alerted and has highlighted its concerns, andis therefore, we hope, on the case. In this particular situation, the developer has carried out this seemingly destructive act even though the Council Ecologist had clearly highlighted that this site could be a KWS (Key Wildlife Site). There were very clear reasons (lack of sustainability, impact on highway safety and biodiversity, land is outside the settlement boundary) within the Appeal Decision Notice that lead to the refusal of development on this greenfield site. So what are they up to? Call me a cynic, but I dont think theyre planning on seeding a field of wildflowers for the benefit of the community. Id be delighted to be proved wrong. As usual, these battles should not be taking place. Stronger safeguards shouldbe in place for greenfield locations, and developers should be persuaded/enticed to build on brownfield sites. It is only the lack of robustness of the currentplanning system, basically giving the developers the opportunity, that perpetuate this struggle. The time to act is now, before any more destruction of the natural habitat on this site takes place. Please email SDC Planning Enforcement, to express your concerns. The more organic England Fast food is very popular in England. There are many street stalls and restaurants servingthis kind of food. However, in the Cotswolds, we discover an alternative, a healthy diet richin meat and vegetables. Organic produce is of great importance, something which is not socommon in other parts of the country. This is perhaps due to the lifestyle in big cities, wherefast food is the first choice and therefore ends up being the idea of English cuisine that manyforeigners have. The Farmers Market that is held on Saturdays in Stroud has a variety of handmade and organic products. The origin of the food sold, both in this market and shops dedicatedto selling organic products which can also be found in Nailsworth, is English and mostly local. In contrast, much of the organic fruit and vegetables that can be found in supermarkets in the area are imported, mostly from Spain. England is among the countries that consume themost organic products in Europe, much of those foods coming from Spain. Spain is the European leader in organic production, but devotes 75% of that production to export. It is much easier to find organic fruits and vegetables in your houses than in a Spanish house. Perhapsone reason is that the price difference between non-organic and organic products in Spain is larger than in the UK and although it is a growing business, there is not the same awareness as in England ofboth the environmental and health benefits. This year is especially important since it marks 20 years since Nailsworth twinned with Lves in 1995. The towns are presenting each other with an anniversary gift of a tree; ours is to be a weeping cherry which will hopefully go on the grassy bank at the bottom of Spring Hill. We have suggested giving Lves an English oak sapling - as long as they can find a big enough space for it to grow! The children from our two primary schools have been invited to take part in a painting competition to be judged by each other. The topic for Nailsworth is France and for Lves is England. There is still space on the coach, if you would like to join the trip in May. Contact - leguen@btinternet.com 833339 Nailsworth & District Twinning Association was formed in 1995 and in April of that year, Nailsworth Mayor John Cross signed the official twinning charters with Michel Castaing, Mayor of the French town of Lves, near to Chartres, southwest of Paris. The Association organises an annual town meeting, one year in France, one year in England and over the years many good relationships have developed between different groups in our communities, such as the primary schools, dramatic societies, choral groups, sports teams and families. Since 1995 a strong bond of friendship has developed between Nailsworth and Lves. The Twinning Association organises an annual town meeting, one year in France, one year in England, and the last few years have seen the creation of blossoming individual relationships between different groups in our communities such as the primary schools, dramatic societies, choral groups, families. Events Page Egg Count Following on from Nigglesworth - We rejoice, here in Nailsworth, at having free parking: this is a cautionary tale about the limits thereof. Two hours in the Nailsworth Mills car park on George Street is usually more than adequate for whatever you want to do but its well worth remembering that two hours means just that. Your correspondent parked at about 09.55 to go to a meeting. At 12.02 the parking attendant noted that the car had overstayed its welcome and quarter of an hour later a ticket was issued. Well, we got value for that ticket because it was an hour later, after an excellent lunch in the Olive Tree, that we returned to the car and discovered the ticket. By any standards it was a fair cop. Because weve paid within 14 days weve got away with a 50 penalty; its 90 between 14 and 28 days and heaven knows how much thereafter. You could do a lot of paid-for parking in Stroud, Gloucester or Cheltenham for 50 so, although parking in Nailsworth is free, its well worth keeping an eye on the time! Introducing the Cotteswold Naturalists Field Club (CNFC) The Nailsworth News has kindly provided this opportunity to tell readers about a long-established organisation that welcomes new members. The Cotteswold Naturalists Field Club, CNFC, encourages interest in the natural history, environment, culture and antiquities of the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire and elsewhere, through talks, outings and special-interest walks (e.g. botany, architecture, geology and industrial archaeology). We also hold social events, such as our Annual Lunch on 22nd April at Minchinhampton Golf Club (for details tel. 01242 890374). Our coach outings depart from Dr. Browns Road for those members who live in the Nailsworth and Minchinhampton areas and include Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Gardens on July 16th. This years programme concludes with the CNFCs jewel in the crown for members in September: a 5-day residential trip to London, from 3rd to 7th, visiting some of the capitals finest properties and gardens: Kenwood, Chiswick House, Eltham Palace, Strawberry Hill, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Kew and much more (contact Peter Wilson, tel. 834486). There will also be other summer trips: e.g. a guided tour of Gloucester Docks, with a visit to the Waterways Museum and cruise on the Sharpness & Gloucester Canal with lunch on board. If you would like to give us a try, you pay the same as members on your first day trip. Look out for details in the Whats On listings or contact me for the full programme on tel. 01452 813228. This, the former home of the Clissold family of civic and local Brewery fame, was a military hospital in WW1 and tended to many severely wounded soldiers at the time. The plaque was presented on behalf of the Nailsworth Society (Local History Group) by Tony Burton photoed standing right in centre photo), unveiled by Dame Janet (right photo standing left) and with added contributions from Myles Robinson (Mayor), Pamela Tawse (ex Red Cross), Jinny Marshall (Nailsworth Society, Chairman) and Kathleen Beard (resident). The new court, which is situated behind the Subscription Rooms, was built with the help of a 35,000grant from Sport England. Dan Robinson will officiallycut the ribbon at 1pm after local children have shown off their tennis skills from 11.00am. Any youngsters can take part with a Hit-About and other games (trainers must beworn!). Club Coach Phil Sims says, The new court has beenconstructed with the idea of encouraging young peopleto take up the game of tennis and builds on the enormousinterest in sport generated by the London Olympics. We already have a very good coaching programme for children and this will help us to develop it further. After this there will be refreshments before the official Opening at 1pm. The teams brilliant away win against all powerful Barnet was probablythe pivotal performance of any FGR side in thelast few years. It showed that the players couldbeat anyone at their own game and all gunswere now blazing for a solid run-in for a firmplay-off place. The management was justifiably elated andproud of the performance, as were the fans. There were smiles all over the place! Then, alas, a feeble and lack-lustre home performance against a mediocre Braintreeputs everything back in the melting pot. Doesa team heading for potential glory need to bebooted up the backside in order to perform? From the start there was no passion, misplacedpasses and little to suggest that this was a tabletopping team, or close to it! The signs are there already that the team rarelyfires except in small patches - 70 minutes offeeble play v Nuneaton (who were equallyfeeble) was forgotten by a blistering last 20 minutes when 3 goals eased the memory. A5 - 1 lead v Southport nearly ended in disasterwhen the away team scored 2 goals with 15minutes to go. The match should have been all over by then, but it could all have been worse! There is so much good to watch with thepresent team, but only in patches and certainlythey find it hard to break down weaker teams- it is certainly not promotion football at thisrate. With just a handful of games remaining, it will be very, very close as to whether FGR finishes in the play-offs and then anything can happen after that. We can only wait and see. Nailsworth Bowls Club starts a new season 01453 833936. Although the LawnBowls season ended in mid Septemberlast year a small team of Club members have been quietly looking after theGreen weekly in the winter gloom in preparation for the official re-opening on Friday, 10 April at 6.30pm when the Clubs Vice President Mr. James Chamberlain - will be bowling the traditional first wood. Lawn Bowls can be played by all ages, both male and female, and it truly isa family sport. The Club, founded in 1900, always needs new members to continue to grow and keep its fine history and traditions in the town. It will continue its popular TASTER SESSIONS on Friday Club Nights starting on 17 April throughout the summer. These are from 6.30pm - 9.00pm when coaching will be available. Just pop along (please wear flat soled shoes) and meet the members, learnwhat the game is about and stay to socialise at the excellent (licensed) Clubhouse. Once a member you can take part in Club competitions and/orLeague games or just play socially. The Green is available almost every day of the week during the summer months and the Clubhouse/Bar is open onsome other evenings as well. Following the success of the combined Taster Day/Fun Bowls game/BBQ/ Quiz evening last year the Club will be organising another such event on Saturday, 22 August which is worth putting in your diaries! Devised by Korean GeneralChoi in 1955, this is the most popular martial art in theworld. Accordingly, Jason Lee founded his teachingclub, Mystic-Eagle-TKD, in Nailsworth in November 2011. As Chief Instructor, his objective is not only to teacha profoundly effective self- defence system but, throughits disciplines and tenets, to encourage focus, moralawareness and respect for all(especially within the localcommunity), alongside fun, friendship, team spirit and thesatisfaction of achievement. So it was a proud momentfor all when seven students participated in the Battle of the Bridge Tournament, organised by the British Tae-Kwon-Do Federation - Wales branch last month, and seven medals were achieved! These included three Golds for sparring, won by teenagersFinn Gazzard photoedleft (already twice BritishChampion), Kai-SongMagraw (his first-evercompetition) and KerryBlick, who has been trainingfor only seven months. This shows what can be done and is testimonyto intensive training andstudents personal effort and commitment. At the Mortimer Gardens on Saturday, 11th April between 10am - 2pm you will find the Eagles demonstrating patterns and sparringto celebrate TKDs diamond anniversary. You can try a few moves yourself, or have cake and a chat. The TKD World Championships are to be held in Britain next year, with international contenders - perhaps including some Eagles!! A special mention must be given to our ever increasing groupof junior players and our two experienced 15 year olds, Connor Ward and Arran Skinner who have been the core of the team pushing forpromotion. Playing in the division below them, and many for thevery first time, greatstrides have been made in improvement throughout the season. Ethan Byrne has led the way for the H teamin the averages, while BillyArthur has been top of theaverages for the I teamjunior. All the other players have gained good experience and we hope to see moreof Harry Cowley, Alex Horseman, Charlie Cole, Fred Donald and Jasper Dahdouhnext season. A special mention must also go to our two 10 yearolds, Sam McIvor and Jon Ramsbotham, both improving greatly. They will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come! Along with many of the lads already mentioned, Sunni Gill performed well in thenational cadet league, helping his team to runners up spot in Division 2 and finishingas the clubs highest ranking U.13 boy at 136th nationally. Congratulations also to Connor Ward for winning the trophy as the best player inStroud 3 this season. It is richly deserved as hehad to knock out several much more experiencedplayers along the way.
