ÒLife gets more selfish by the day. And nowhere is this more obvious than on the roads, itÕs all about me, me, me . . . Get out of my way, only I matter! But there is a wonderful exception to this dog-eat-dog world, and it is NailsworthÕs very own roundabout. There, no-one is in a hurry. We slow down, we stop, we admire the scenery, we sit and stare* at each other, and we always let the other car through, even if there isnÕt one. If you havenÕt been to this oasis of tranquillity and kindness recently, go there soon. I just pray that they never replace the roundabout with traffic lights; where else would we go for a day out?Ó *with apologies to WH Davies 2 Free monthly newspaper for Nailsworth Parish Published by the Nailsworth News team Editor: Gail Jones 0303 040 1150, editor@nailsworthnews.org.uk Photographer: Martin Stone Production: Leopard Press or c/o Shiny Goodness, Fountain Street Asst. & Sports Editor: Martin Stone 833132, martinstonephotography@gmail.com Business Editor: Bill Affleck 832619, business@nailsworthnews.org.uk Advertising: Mike Hewlett, 01453 367998 adverts@nailsworthnews.org.uk Treasurer: David Cox 836119, treasurer@nailsworthnews.org.uk Centre Spread Editor: Carole de Lacroix, features@nailsworthnews.org.uk Payment & Hard Copy Correspondence: c/o Shiny Goodness, Fountain St. Accounts: accounts@nailsworthnews.org.uk Distribution: Don Luke 832812, distribution@nailsworthnews.org.uk Youth: Madi Rhys-Davies & Anna OÕHara youth@nailsworthnews.org.uk WhatÕs On: Jemma Kilyon, whatson@nailsworthnews.org.uk IT: Jonathan Duckworth Editorial Support: Joyce Affleck Postal subscriptions at £8 per year: Veronica Luke 832812 Advertising rates: £5 + £13 per unit of 60 x 30 mm (w x h): ¥ Larger than 3 units only if space permits ¥ £1 discount per unit for three insertions if booked and paid in advance ¥ £5 surcharge for a specific page Space is limited and Nailsworth advertisers take priority. Nailsworth News is still looking for a new Editor The 24 page paper is produced 10 times a year, putting together articles and information submitted by and for the community. If you have skills in either Editing or Desktop Publishing, and some time available, or if you are not sure about your skills, just talk to us in order to find out what is involved and see if you are able to contribute. The role could also be shared by two, or even three Editors on a rotating basis, so that no single person bears the whole burden. Other members of the team are on hand to help with editing articles, carrying out interviews or reporting on different matters as required and proof reading, so the Editor is well supported. We need to solve this to make sure that Nailsworth News continues to provide the service it has given to this community for the last 15 years. This involves bagging up the copies at the printers (in Selsley) and getting the bundles round to the individual deliverers - a brilliant team of yet more volunteers who distribute the paper door to door. Don Luke has done the job for the last 15 years and is ready to retire. Without the important work of the Distribution Manager, the paper would not get to the residents of our town. So if you have a few hours available towards the end of each month, for 10 months of the year, please in the first instance contact Don Luke, who will be able to explain in more detail what is involved. At the time of writing, I have no knowledge whether a new publican is being sought or whether a planning application may follow for a change of use. If enough local people are keen to ensure that it remains a pub, it is possible that an application to Stroud District Council can be made for it to be registered as an Asset of Community Value. Once registered, time will be allowed for marketing for its current use before any planning application can be submitted for any change. If this is the wish of local residents, a strong petition would - I am sure - be supported by Nailsworth Town Council, so I wait to hear. In the meantime I wish Bob and David a happy retirement in Minchinhampton after over 20 years working within our community. Those who live close to the Primary School may be aware that the Town Council has withdrawn the planning application to build a new Multi Use Games Area within the school grounds. We will shortly be making a re- application and, on this occasion, will include consultation with home occupiers over a wider area; a letter from me will be circulated shortly. The application will include reports on Lighting and Acoustics as well as a more detailed Design and Operational Statement. I am pleased to see that Gloucestershire County Council has provided new bollards on the pavement outside Tesco in Old Market. When vehicles were parking partly on the pavement and in the shop forecourt, there was very little space for pedestrians, so this will improve safety. Also in Old Market, re-surfacing of the pavement outside and around the Co-op is on the CountyÕs list of jobs to do and I was hoping this work would be done at the same time. I will continue to pester our County Councillor.* Recently I met the Chair of Stonehouse Town Council, who was boasting that on that day there were only two empty shops in their town. After pause for thought, I suggested we may have three. I am always keen to see new enterprises starting up and I certainly look forward to the day when I can out-boast Stonehouse. myles.robinson@nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.uk / 01453 836828 * As we go to press, signs have gone up in Old Market announcing the work. The George Inn in Newmarket was originally a row of three cottages. When it opened in 1820 as an ale house on the old footpath between Kingscote and Woodchester, it was known as the New Inn, then renamed in 1910 in honour of the new King George. In 1903, unlike the pubs in town, this one closed at 10pm. The earliest recorded landlady was Mrs Lizzie Evans in 1885. Landlord Bob Pike, with David dÕSouza as chef, has been in charge since at least the mid 90s. DavidÕs piri piri chicken and steak Espetada were famous and seriously delicious. As one of NailsworthÕs oldest hostelries, let us hope it remains as a pub. What IS going on? First one, then two, now there are three can ropes hanging from the TIC tree !? We also have ÔspareÕ volunteers who can step in and cover for you, if you suddenly get invited to tea with the Queen. All the operating systems in the TIC are straightforward and designed to be easily followed and understood by everyone. There is an inhouse computer, but it is not essential to be able to use it. The TIC is a lively, happy place to spend a few hours, and a sociable meeting point. We provide information to local residents as much as to visitors and have lots of information on all sorts of places to visit, ideas for outings, details about local classes and activities, travel information and more. If you think you might be interested, do call in to the TIC and speak to the volunteer on duty who will be happy to show you round and tell you more about the role. Please consider joining us as we would really love to have you on the team. Contact Carole (01453) 833339, leguen@btinternet.com or leave your phone number in the TIC and sheÕll call you for a chat. Green plastic sacks for garden waste are being discontinued by Stroud District Council, which is expanding its home waste collection services. Between late November and February next year, SDC will be offering households a new separate container for garden waste so that it can be properly composted. (The green bag system which is being phased out, merely meant you could put your garden waste out with your general household rubbish, but unfortunately it was not recycled.) More information on the new system is available at the TIC and please donÕt buy more green sacks than you are going to be able to use before February 1st 2016. The TIC will continue selling the sacks (at 60p each) for as long as these are available and in service. If youÕre driving round the car park looking for that elusive parking space, you wonÕt take kindly to finding that space blocked by an abandoned vehicle. Nailsworth Mills Estate, whose car park this is, doesnÕt take kindly to it either, but there are procedures to be followed. Only after 28 days from the posting of the first parking ticket can they contact DVLC to find out who owns the car and only after that can SDCÕs Abandoned Vehicles Department come into play. By then the accumulated parking fines probably exceed the value of the carÉ Our picture captures the more direct approach practised in foreign parts, in this case Ljubljana. Another blocked parking space featured an upmarket vehicle. The owners returned to find the beast totally unresponsive. The carÕs computer had Ôgone offÕ taking the precaution of locking everything that could be locked or disabled before signing off. The lady took a taxi home with the (still) frozen food and the gentleman settled down to wait, actually for almost six hours, until help from the manufacturerÕs specialist arrived. Ah Technology! But he was spared a parking ticket and it wasnÕt raining. Patrick and Emma RollingÕs new shop, The Dressing Room, in the old BramleyÕs building is very close to opening. Schools Harvest Time at Horsley Primary The sound of children enthusiastically singing ÔHarvest Time is Here AgainÕ filled the air in a beautifully decorated St. MartinÕs Church on the morning of Friday 9th October. This was the opening song at our Harvest Festival Celebration attended not only by parents and grandparents, but also by members of our village community. This wonderful thanksgiving assembly involved the whole school and included two confident solo musicians, a dance performed by Badgers Class (Years 1 & 2) based on HandaÕs Surprise, plenty of song and some moving poetry and prayers which reminded us all of how grateful we are for this important time of year. Keeping with tradition we celebrated with the sharing of tasty bread and with a beautiful plaited loaf which formed the centre piece of our Harvest produce display. At the end of the service there was a collection in aid of UNICEFÕs Syria Children Emergency Appeal which raised £75.00. All the fresh produce, which was generously donated by the children and their families, has now been distributed to the pensioners in Horsley village by the children in Otters Class (Years 3 & 4) and the non-perishable items will be taken to the Stroud Food Bank. Our thanks go to Hobbs House Bakery for kindly donating the bread, the Friends of Horsley School for decorating the church and, of course, to all the children for a wonderful celebration. Lisa Brind, Headteacher / www.horsley.gloucs.sch.uk St DominicÕs At St DominicÕs we understand and ensure that learning is engaging and fun and we ensure that pupils have the appropriate balance between all areas of the curriculum. We try to involve the children in as many after school clubs as we can manage and we endeavour to give them opportunities to be inquisitive and to question the world in which they live. There was no better way of doing this than taking almost all of key stage 2 pupils to The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to see the ballet of Romeo and Juliet. The pupils went on a bus tour around London before entering the magnificent theatre. Before the ballet got under way, the pupils were curious about the orchestra pit; who sat where and why! It was a truly magnificent performance with the children caught doing pirouettes and trying a petit assemblŽ in the playground the next day. This has even exercised the French vocabulary of the staff and children. There is no doubt it was a truly cross-curricular experience. As a member of Girlguiding, I partake in the parade from the bus station to St GeorgeÕs Church every year, and so I see a number of young people who turn out to commemorate. Local uniformed units such as scouts and brownies, join with students from local schools, laying wreaths and remembering those who have fallen. In my opinion, Remembrance Day is something that everyone should support. It isnÕt just about our great- grandfathers, fathers, or uncles who served 100 years ago. In everyday life there are soldiers serving our country in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. There are soldiers who have served, or who are serving and come from Nailsworth. WeÕve also sadly had soldiers who never returned - Mark Chandler for example. It isnÕt just about those who served in the First and Second World Wars. When people come round with boxes of poppies - buy one. YouÕre helping a soldier with rehabilitation, or supporting a family who has had their son, brother, father or uncle cruelly taken whilst serving. ItÕs a contribution that wonÕt go to waste. The next time you go to buy a chocolate bar or an energy drink, think about it, and save that money for a poppy. ÒAt the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.Ó Madi Rhys-Davies Many young people in Nailsworth get involved in voluntary work, be it through the scouts, guides or other adventures to benefit others. You can easily find young people willing to get involved wherever you turn. We are fortunate to live within a society that offers support, encouragement and opportunities for charitable giving and helping one another. Sometimes it just takes a bit of courage to think beyond ourselves. I feel it appropriate to mention local teen Lilia Kayani, who hopes to raise money to fund her post-GCSE trip to Borneo in 2017. Lilia intends to undertake projects on wildlife and forest conservation, and create sustainable improvements in local peopleÕs lives. She will also be doing building work and teaching English to local children. One of LiliaÕs fundraising ideas is to collect unwanted clothes to sell, and she would greatly appreciate any donations. Events Nailsworth Dramatic Society presents Been to a family funeral recently? Very much like a wedding, christening or reading of a will. A family gathers for a common cause, maybe the first time they have seen each other for a while. Tensions, undercurrents, bubbling for a while, may unexpectedly rise to the surface. Shelagh StephensonÕs emotional play sees three sisters gather for their mother ViÕs funeral. Vi even appears herself for a while. There is wild humour and bruising emotion, as three girls from the same family meet and reveal conflicts of the past, with their grip on the present. One is a GP with a secret from her teens, now having an affair with a married man. The oldest sister and her business partner husband met deceiving each other via a dating website and the youngest craves affection through a dysfunctional mix of drink, drugs and outrageous remarks. They all look back over their childhood. Memories can fade or become distorted, but they linger on, affecting how we feel about people, places and events. And was Vi a ghost, or just a dream? ÔThe Memory of WaterÕ will be performed at Nailsworth Town Hall from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st November. The play contains strong language and is not suitable for children. Doors and bar open 7.00pm, curtain up at 7.30pm each night. To obtain tickets online, visit www.nailsworthdramaticsociety. com for details; or contact the societyÕs booking agent Ticketsource, tel. 0333 666 3366, charged at local rate. Apple Day Event Lots of fun was had at an ÔApple dayÕ on Saturday 3 October in Nailsworth Town Hall in aid of emergency medical care for refugees in Calais. The Apple Day organised by musical storytelling group Playcircle has so far raised more than £850 for the charity Doctors of the World, who provide mobile medical units in the makeshift Refugee camp known as Ôthe JungleÕ. Children enjoyed apple themed activities including apple pressing, a music and storytelling session and an opportunity to write and decorate goodwill messages (apple wishes) which will be sent to Calais along with the funds raised. Chloe Kempton, from Playcircle said, ÒWe cannot believe the response. People have given so much of themselves and given so generously. As well as the huge amount of money raised, it has been heart warming to see people donating so much of their time and talent to make the apple day a success.Ó Melanie Golding said, ÒThanks to all the wonderful people of Nailsworth and Stroud, we have raised more than expected and online donations are still coming in.Ó To donate to Doctors of the World you can visit the Just Giving website and search for ÔPlaycircle apple dayÕ. FREEQUOTES¥PartPRegisteredCallSimonon07773333061/01453834323info@cirruselectrical.com¥www.cirruselectrical.com Faith St GeorgeÕs Dear Friends, One of my worst subjects at school was History. I only ever took one exam and got 7%. However, in my defence, I had only been at the school for 6 weeks and had not done any History before that ... But it was a subject that I never really took to. Part of that is a personality thing Ð I live in the present and once the past is gone, then it is forgotten. That is why I have to write things down, because if someone tells me something and I donÕt, I tend to forget. The problem is that the past has shaped who we are. That is true as a human being and it is certainly true as a Christian. As I get older as a human being, I discover that I get more and more like my Dad Ð having sworn as a teenager, for example, that I would never have his attitude to modern music (you know Ð Òturn that row off, thatÕs not musicÓ) I have said exactly the same thing to my own children. (Well rap really isnÕt music!) But a Christian looks back to Jesus all the time as a point of reference, remembering what he did, who he was and how he taught us to live out our lives like him. Without that constant looking back and learning from the past, we would not be the people or the Christians that we are today. So as Remembrance Sunday looms and we look back once again, I shall do it with respect, honour and sadness, hoping that this is one lesson of History that we can all learn from Ð me included. Best wishes, Mike Rev. Mike Smith / mike.davica@sky.com / 01453 836536 Christ Church ItÕs Monday morning and I have that rather pleasant but tired feeling of knowing I have had a good weekend. I have spent time with people I know, and people I donÕt. I have eaten so many buffet sandwiches that I run the risk of looking like one. Why? Because we, at Christ Church, have been celebrating. ItÕs a kind of double birthday. Shortwood Baptist Chapel (thatÕs the building you see on Newmarket Road) is 300 years old this year, and Christ Church itself is 48 years old. The history is fascinating Ð the building has been physically moved, the congregation was responsible for the beginnings of Adelaide in Australia (yes, there is a Nailsworth Primary School in Adelaide too) and Thomas Burchall was a missionary with a global impact as he campaigned against slavery. Not bad for a rural church. The last 48 years have been pretty momentous too. Did you know that Nailsworth boasts one of the oldest ecumenical partnerships in the country? Ð that means different denominations joining together to form one church. Of course it hasnÕt always been plain sailing. The original congregation at Shortwood formed because they fell out with the church at Forest Green. After some twists and turns the formation of Christ Church saw the rejoining of the Shortwood and Forest Green congregations along with the Methodists. One of the joys of working together to be one church is a willingness to work with the other churches in Nailsworth and we were delighted that the Quakers, St GeorgeÕs and the Church of the Annunciation (our partners in Churches Together) were able to celebrate with us. Why is all that history, and our ability to celebrate together, with other churches, and with the local community so brilliant? Because Christians are actually one group of believers - we have different approaches, but we all believe in the same God, and we also believe that we have something to bring to our community Ð as well as something to learn. Come and teach us! Rev. Helene Grant / 07956 657759 revhelenegrant@gmail.com Charity Charity Chatter We are always extremely grateful to receive donations of all sorts - bricabrac, clothes, shoes, jewellery etc, but recently I was greeted by a very proud grandfather holding an envelope asking me open it up and look inside. I was delighted to find a neatly written card and £40 cash donation from 10 year old Emma from Downend, Bristol! Emma had been staying with her grandparents in Nailsworth and had picked their lavender and had made lavender bags and bunches of the dried flowers and sold them to raise money for the RSPCA - the charity of her choice, being an animal lover and wanting to help a local cause. So a big thank you Emma and well done for your entrepreneurial idea - maybe we will be seeing her on The Apprentice in a few years time?! www.rspca-southcotswolds.org.uk Saturday 21 November, 11-4, in Amberley Church and Parish Rooms. in aid of the Parish Rooms Nailsworth Knitters are helping to raise money for a defibrillator at the Arkell Centre. The Coventry Building Society has made a donation of £30,138 to Longfield Hospice Care for the Cotswolds Ð enough to pay for more than 1,500 hours of care from LongfieldÕs Hospice at Home team. The money was raised through its affinity savings account Ð Supporters of Longfield. The Society makes a donation equal to 1% of the balances held in the account each year. The Coventry also encourages branches to work with a charity or good cause local to them through their Community Partner programme, to help raise money and awareness for the work they do in the local community. The Nailsworth, Dursley and Stonehouse branches have all nominated Longfield as their Community Partner, and support them through fundraising events throughout the year. Line 2 x 15cm cake tins or enamel pie dishes with greaseproof paper. 2. Weigh the flour, salt and lard into a big bowl. Mix the yeast into the warm water then empty the mixture into the bowl and stir all the ingredients together. 3. Knead the dough for 15 minutes (or 10 minutes in an electric mixer). Once you have a smooth and elastic dough nestle it back into the bowl and cover in cling film with no air gaps. Leave it in a warm place to rise to twice its size or for 1 hour, whichever is first. 4. Meanwhile make the lard and sugar mix by mixing them together until theyÕre combined in a mixer or with a wooden spoon. To slightly soften the the lard just warm it a bit in a bowl over a saucepan of hot water. 5. When itÕs rested, divide the dough into 2 pieces. Mould the dough into round shapes and then on a well- floured table, with a rolling pin, roll the balls out into 20cm discs. 6. Using a pallet knife, spread a layer of sweet lard mix onto each disc. Then fold the dough; this requires you to take an outside edge and pull into the middle, your circle now has a straight edge with a corner at each end. Looking at it clockwise, take the bottom corner and pull the corner into the middle and push the dough down with your palm. Now working clockwise pick up the bottom corner and continue to work your way around, pulling the bottom corner into the centre until youÕve worked your way all around. 7. Roll the discs out again and then spread all but a tablespoon of the sweet lard mix on top. Sprinkle with some raisins and currants and fold as before, then roll out to fit your round cake tins. 8. Put the remainder of the sweet lard mix in the bottom of each tin and spread it around to cover the bottom and sides. Then sprinkle a generous tablespoon of sugar over the lard mix and place the dough on top, with the flat side on the bottom and the layered, knotted side on top. Cover and leave in a warm place to rise for 2 hours. 9. After 2 hours, preheat the oven to 210¡C/fan 190¡C/ gas mark 6.. Bake the lardy cake for 45 minutes until you can just lift the cake from the tin using the small pallet knife and the cake is golden all over. Take care to bake the base well so it caramelises (baking on a pre-heated baking stone, or a heavy metal tray will really help this) but doesnÕt burn. 10. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for half an hour until the caramelised lard toffee has set a bit. Then tip out onto grease proof paper and serve sunny side up. Congratulations to Corinium Care which has achieved an ÔOutstandingÕ rating for its caring, and ÔGoodÕ overall from the Care Quality Commission. The live-in care agency was rated ÔGoodÕ in the four further categories designed to test whether the service is safe, effective, responsive and well-led. The companyÕs overall CQC rating was ÔGoodÕ. The inspector spent three days with Corinium Care and talked to carers, clients and their relatives as well as to the staff in Nailsworth in the companyÕs first CQC inspection. His 13 page report said clients, most of whom are frail and elderly, Òreceived a caring and compassionate service from people who knew them wellÓ. On the subject of safety, he said recruitment arrangements were ÒrobustÓ and people were supported by sufficient staff with appropriate skills. The service was effective because staff had been trained to meet peopleÕs needs. ÒNew staff received a thorough induction . . . and staff received support from managers through effective supervision and performance appraisal.Ó Other elements praised included carer training, the skill and experience of carers and the vision and values which permeated the entire company. www.coriniumcare.com ........... ............................................... .......................................... ..................................................................................... ........................................ ........................ After WWI, an appeal for funds was made to raise a permanent memorial to the Nailsworth men who were lost. An Iona Cross, symbolic of the sacrifice they made, was erected near the church at a cost of around £550. Nailsworth War Memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Gloucester on 26 September 1920. The dedication plaque reads: In grateful and affectionate memory of the men of Nailsworth who gave their lives for King & Country in the Great War 1914-1919 and the World War 1939 Ð 1945. Community When out at Night, Leave on a Light Opportunistic thieves prefer to work when they are hidden by the darkness, so most burglaries occur at night. This means itÕs no surprise that the number of burglaries increases as the nights get longer during the autumn and winter months. By making sure all your doors and windows are always locked, leaving lights and/or televisions on to make your home look occupied when itÕs not, we can begin to reduce the number of burglaries. Please take the time to read out five top tips below to help tackle the increasing number of home burglaries. Top 5 tips to make your home more secure during the winter months 1. Burglars are less likely to target a home that looks occupied. Use a timer to switch lights on when youÕre away. 2. Close your curtains and blinds so burglars canÕt see your valuables through your windows. 3. Lock your sheds and outbuildings Ð and an outside light can blow the cover of darkness for a would-be thief. 4. Carry out a general security check. It takes no more than two minutes to lock your windows and doors. 5. Dispose of your empty boxes carefully. Do not leave them outside and advertise to the burglars your new TV and expensive gadgets. You can purchase crime prevention items from our reception at Stroud Police Station, Light timers £2.20, Shed Alarms £8.00 and Smartwater £10.50 are just a few of the popular items that we sell. Smartwater is a good way of marking your property with a unique code to you and makes reuniting you with your property easier and thieves donÕt like it. Have you also thought about joining a local Neighbourhood Watch group? Essentially it concerns crime prevention, but just as importantly, it involves neighbours working together as a community to make their area a safer place. This in turn instils a sense of security amongst residents, knowing their homes and other properties are being cared for by their neighbours. This and an improved social contact are the hallmarks of a successful Watch. We aim to make playing the harp affordable and accessible to everyone by renting and offering online lessons, so that this beautiful instrument doesnÕt disappear and the tradition of the folk harpist can stay alive. We have recently started a community harp orchestra which has 8 members. They are mostly complete beginners to the harp and some to music in general. We meet every Wednesday between 6.30 and 7.30pm in the small room at the Nailsworth Subscription Rooms. We are working towards a Christmas concert and would like to invite you to come along to one of our rehearsals prior to the event and meet and chat with our members. We have an affordability initiative that helps our members with the cost of the lessons. The A46 Working Group would like to invite all residents to an information exchange evening on 23rd November at the Town Hall starting at 7pm. This will be part of a series of consultation events, where the views of the community on speeding issues and signage in the Town will be collected. The Group has been studying traffic movements along the A46 as well as throughout Nailsworth. It would be good to get some feedback from all the work that the Group has undertaken and as such there will be plans available on the evening, reviewing the speed and signage in the Town and how best it can be improved. Please do come along to this initial meeting on the 23rd Nov as your views are important. www.a46-action.org.uk WeÕve been concerned by the number of buses plying the Cotswold Green routes, but which donÕt boast the Cotswold Green livery. A consultation process has been held and the first Board has been elected. The Board was elected at the organisationÕs AGM on Monday 12th October, with a number of local residents and councillors stepping up to help run this exciting project. Ian Potts was elected as Chair and said ÒIt is fantastic that we are now a properly constituted organisation with a formal board, which takes us another step on the way to providing affordable homes for the town.Ó The CLTÕs aim is to create new housing for local people. They propose to use a Community Right to Build Order that allows local people to make the final decision. A conventional planning application would be quicker, but it would not be possible to remove the ÔRight to BuyÕ and allow these homes to be for rent in perpetuity. The CLT has a website with more information nailsworthclt.org.uk Nailsworth Community Land Trust is a community led organisation established to provide new rentable housing for the town which gives priority to those on the council housing list with a Nailsworth connection. http://www.nailsworthclt.org.uk Photo Left to Right: Jonathan Duckworth Nailsworth Town Councillor, Keith Angus, Wendy Gerard, Elizabeth Francis, Steve Robinson Stroud District and Nailsworth Town Councillor, Mike Levett, Ian Crawley, Ian Potts Chair of the CLT. Nailsworth CLT Community Consultation THE DEADLINE IS 9TH NOVEMBER 2015!! NCLT NEEDS YOUR FEEDBACK BY THEN The Nailsworth Community Land Trust is holding a local Consultation in Nailsworth on its first Housing Project. If you want to comment on their proposals you only have a few days left to give them your views. Feedback forms are available at the Town Information Centre and Lawnside Stores in Forest Green. The Nailsworth CLT report above sets out the progress made so far in setting up the Project. The community consultation is to seek the views of Nailsworth residents on the design and layout of the Housing Project itself, and important aspects of how the scheme will work. The feedback from Nailsworth residents will be used to support the application for a Community Right to Buy Order, which is the first step in enabling its proposals to be carried out. Part of the aims of the Nailsworth CLT is that its housing should remain available for rent in perpetuity, and prevent the housing being lost to Nailsworth as a result of the ÒRight to BuyÓ scheme. This is why the Community Right to Buy Order is being applied for. For this reason your feedback is important. Nailsworth CLT intends to hold a referendum on its proposals in the autumn of 2016, and Nailsworth News will provide further information on this nearer the time. In the meantime it is important that as many people provide feedback at this stage, and YOU HAVE UNTIL MONDAY 9TH NOVEMBER TO DO THIS. Feedback forms can be handed in at the Town Information Centre, or Lawnside Stores, Forest Green, or you can email consultation@nailsworthclt.org.uk HORSFALL HOUSEWindmill Road, Minchinhampton, Stroud, Glos GL6 9EY Registered Charity No: 287479A Purpose-built Nursing Home, Day Resource Centre and Home Care ProviderThe Local Care Home for Local Older PeopleHome Care Services .Professional Help with Personal Care .Domestic Tasks .Meals on WheelsDay Centre Including Optional Transport .Home cooked lunch plus teas/coffees .Entertainment, Activities and Day Trips .Chiropody & Hairdressing, Assisted BathingCare Home providing General & Dementia Nursing Care .Registered Nurses on duty 24 hours a day .Care Assistants trained to NVQ levels 2 & 3 in Care .Respite support occasionally availableInformal visits welcome. We talked to Sandra from Avening and a volunteer in our library. Sandra had been looking at some 18C documents, including a map clearly showing Avening - but with no indication of NailsworthÕs existence. Last monthÕs centre spread reminded us that prominent religious buildings in Nailsworth migrated down from the hills in relatively recent times. St GeorgeÕs dates from 1794. One is sometimes tempted to wonder if Nailsworth has peaked. Nailsworth used to have a secondary school (such an important part of any townÕs identity), but that is now a vanishing memory. People may remember the time, some years ago now, when Ôa higher authorityÕ declared that Nailsworth was really just a suburb of Stroud. We bristled, but we knew better, or thought we did. The 2011 census shows Nailsworth shrinking to just under 5,800 from just over 6,000 in 2005. Wikipedia tells us that ÔThese days Nailsworth is sleepy and tranquilÉÕ When did you last see any substantial (or, indeed, any) mention of Nailsworth in the SNJ? Then thereÕs the split personality thing. When plans for what became the Arkell Centre were being discussed and we were (endlessly) reminded that over 60% of the population of Nailsworth actually lived in Forest Green. Our Royal British Legion branch has morphed into the Forest Green & Nailsworth Branch. And now the No 63 bus comes from Stroud signed only to Forest Green. It does still stop in Nailsworth, but one might wonder for how much longer. When FGR ups sticks and moves to Eastington, and 400 new houses are built on the New Lawn site, will bottom-of-the-town Nailsworth even qualify as a suburb of Forest Green? Those of us who believe in Nailsworth as an entity (an entity which is not just the town centre, but Rockness, Watledge, Forest Green, Park Road, Newmarket, Shortwood, the Old Bristol Road, and other areas) should speak up for the town as a whole and not allow fragmentation. If you need cheering up after that you might wade through the dogs and pigs in NovemberÕs Cotswold Life to page 154 and read some nice things about our Nailsworth traders and what they have to offer. Jemma, who has been putting together the WhatÕs On pages for ever, is having to retire. So, we need a new volunteer who can gather together the information (that comes in mostly by email) and type it up to pass on to the Editor at the end of each month. Can you help? Can you give a couple of hours a month to Nailsworth News to keep this important calendar of events up to date for the residents of our town? of course, despite the image, it doesnÕt have to be a female! Sport Forest Green Rovers Academy has had a truly memorable time since the last NN issue. Undefeated in the League, the team sits proudly at the top of the pile. Just as importantly the team is all guns blazing in the FA Youth Cup. A fine 5 - 0 away win in the last round at Ashton & Blackwell (Bristol) on a difficult pitch against a somewhat tricky opposition proved that this team has it in it to adapt well to differing standards and locations. At the time of going to press, we await the home tie v Hungerford at the New Lawn in the final qualifying FA Cup match before the real Ôbig gunsÕ. Who knows what will happen. All one does know is that the football is positive and the players are confident and obviously know what their roles are and what they are expected to do. The team is being well coached by Scott Bartlett and the selection of three of the players to England Youth trials is a testimony to the great work that he is doing. ÔHomeÕ League matches are at the RAU in Cirencester on Saturday mornings - well worth the trip before going back to watch the big boys in the afternoon. Face in the Crowd. Is this YOU? If so, you qualify for a FREE ground pass to FGRÕs next Home match. Just call in at the Club Office with a copy of this paper. The glorious unbeaten run came to an end - well it had to at some time, and since then results have been very up and down. The defeat to Gateshead was very odd - FGR should have won 8 - 1 with the amount of possession and chances created, but the almost silent home crowd witnessed just Ôone of those daysÕ. A last minute defeat to Eastleigh was harsh, but the recent poor performance where the team seemed void of creativity against Tranmere in front of a large home crowd was not good to witness. There have been some stunning performances however - the televised victory at Aldershot was one such example and the fine home win v Guiseley was a joy to watch for the purist with flowing football and fine goals. It could so easily have been many more. The hard part of the season starts to take hold now. Word will have got out that FGR has many fine players and teams will adapt accordingly - Frear is a brilliant winger when he is given the ball and can run into space, Guthrie is brilliant when the ball is at his feet and he is not being used as a target man, and OÕConnor has a superb professional touch in much of his play. Cut the supply to them and the attack is mediocre as Tranmere did so easily in their recent victory. Get over the inconsistency which is creeping in, attack with pace right from the start and convert the half chances again. Easy really, but who would be a football manager! At least FGR remain, by the skin of their teeth, top of the table and with a Cup game looming, can take a brief rest from chasing points to chasing the Cup. Shortwood United also had one of those up and down sorts of months. Some excellent wins in the League have pushed them to 6th position with some fine play and just the occasional disappointing result thrown in for good measure. The recent defeat in the Cup to Bridgwater just about summed up the season so far. Losing 0 - 1 when so much of the play was in ShortwoodÕs favour was a sickening result. ÒWe dominated the game, had loads of possession and could have scored eight,Ó said joint-manger John Evans, and he was right! If that header had bounced off the other side of the post, then things would certainly changed rapidly! Once these dominant performances are turned into goals in the league, then a promotion push could well be on the cards. With three home games in November a positive month is on the cards and that would be good for the little club on the other side of town. personalisedChristmas Cards LEOPARDPRESS Tel 872123 stroud@leopardpress.com On 28 Sept, Giffords tweeted that this sweet little chap had been left at the circus.
