I have very much enjoyedmy time wearing the chain ofoffice and thank my fellow councillors for the supportthey have given me. It hasbeen a privilege to serve Nailsworth. I thought I would use this page to highlightsome of the lighter moments I have had in the past three years. Not long after being elected I got into conversation with a resident in an old persons home. She had recently moved from north London. Is your car outside and what sort of car is it? Yes it is outside and it is a Nissan I replied. This was clearly not her idea of a mayoral car, expecting at least a Daimler with a crest. Oh then after a pause, Would yourchauffeur like to come in? Not being a linguist, my first visit to our twin town in Northern France was going to be a challenge as I reallythought I should make an effort to speak French. I attendedtwo terms of Conversational French for Beginners at StroudCollege which was useful for getting directions to the tourist sites, but perhaps not for public speaking. My speech, which dwelt on us making a return visit in response to the 1066invasion, made our hosts laugh. Whether though politenessor my wit, I may never know. I was asked to judge homemade cakes for a fund raising event held at The George at Newmarket. Being driven bypublic duty I eagerly accepted. I did not anticipate such a high standard or number of entrants, each so it seemedentered by an extremely talented child and each with veryproud parents standing immediately behind. The choice was difficult, but made and then a swift exit. I am not often seen in Newmarket! A few visits made to Nailsworth during my term stand out. The National Town Criers Championships, expertly organised by Tony and Jenny Evans, added huge colour andcharacter to our town with the a parade from Christ Church and the competition shouts made in the Mortimer Gardens. Fortunately I didnt have to judge this time! A proud momentwas to welcome the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter as representative of the Queen to presentthe British Empire Medal to Margaret Marshall. Not quite so successful was the visit of The Tour of Britain cycle race in 2014, whose route included the A46 from Stroud and then upthe road to Horsley. Unfortunately the banner I and another councillor hurriedly erected early in the day read Nailsworth welcomes the Tour of Britian Clearly time for me to retire. Myles myles.robinson@nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.ukphone 01453 836828 The bus shelter in the Town Square has moved. Or, to be more precise, been moved. This was an extended operation involving stonemasonry - redoing the wallbehind the shelter; diggingup and replanting theshelter itself; making goodthe paving; metal work toadjust and reposition therailings; painting and finishing. Of course weve outgrown the tinkle of cash registers, but you can almostsense the electronic hum of significant cash changing hands The shelter may indeed now be better placed although weve heardremarks about a longer walk in the rain from the shelter to the bus but whywasnt it put in the right place to start with and was solving this problem thebest use for cash-strapped Council resources? The Arkell Centre is currently used twice a week for a total of threehours during term time as a toy library and for stay andplay by the childrens centre that covers that area. There had been speculation that these services might cease, following a wider review of county childrens centres. Following discussions with district councillor Emma Simmsand local campaigners, Cllr Binns has agreed to remove anyuncertainty about the future of this programme. The Councillor commented, At the minute, there are two sessions per week of support offered at the Arkell Centre. I can see for myself the benefit this brings and I wantto put an end to some of the misleading speculation thats been going about. I will continue tofund the same number of sessions from my delegated Childrens Activity Fund. No matter what the wider review concludes elsewhere - this will continue. This is great news for Nailsworth, and shows just how effectively district and county councillors can worktogether to support local people. Its great to hear that these services forchildren in our area will continue into the future. Musical Showcase is back and we need YOU! Portobellos sisters Lisa and Anita Mountain have taken over the lease of this venue, and intend to bringnew life back to the restaurant with traditional, popularfamily recipes and menus. With many years between them in retail work and local pubs and eateries, both Lisa and Anita have the experience and the catering know-how to make a success of this new venture. Many will remember their mother, Karin, who was for years the catering guru at Nailsworth School in Church Street. The two sisters have learnt all their skills and brilliant home cooking from mum! Karin always wanted to own her own eating house - Lisa and Anita are fulfilling that dream. Portobellos will offer what people enjoy and you can have a bite to eat and a drink from breakfast time until late. Childrens options are also available. Traditional food is the name of the game and whether it be a Full English or bacon butties at breakfast or light lunches of soups, salads, casseroles and fish etc. and evening dinner of steaks, burgers, fish, pastas and specials, then surely Portobellos is worth a try. Sunday lunches will consist of classic roasts and all the trimmings. Dont forget the puddings either - good old classic puddings are on the menu too - completely yummy. Lisa and Anita are going to ring the changes with the seasons - locally sourced meat and vegetables are definitely in and therefore on the menu - and there is a vegetarian option for those who require it. The space is light and airy and downstairs there is a perfect room for a quieter time; ideal for business meetings and smaller gatherings. Portobellos has its official opening times, but if there is the demandfor a specific event, please get in touch. Parties, Themed Evenings and special arrangements can all be catered for. Please ask. Along with the children, staff, governors and parents of the school we acknowledged the significant help that we have receivedfrom so many. Back in the autumn of 2014 the much loved Log Worldwhich had been enjoyed by our children for more than20 years was decommissioned having been identifiedas unsafe. Soon after it was dismantled and the task of fundraising for a replacement began. Over the next 18 months the Friends of Horsley Schoolorganised many fun and exciting events, including quiz nights, fireworks, summer fete, Easter Eggstravaganzaand Christmas bazaar, to raise the majority of the 19k needed. We also received generous donations and funding from Barclays Bank, Renishaw, the Summerfield Trust and GCC Childrens Activity Fund. One notable donation of 1,000 came from Jimmy Chew who was a pupil at theschool some 80 years ago and now lives in Berkshire. Jimmy has very fond memories of his time at Horsley, especially playtimes, which prompted him to make sucha generous gesture. Sadly Jimmy was unable to attend the opening as poor health prevented him from making thejourney to Horsley. Our wonderful playground now boasts a fabulous woodencastle as the central climbing frame surrounded by varioustrim trail items; all provided and installed by local companyAll Out Play from Woodchester. This new addition compliments our recently installedmulti-use court and climbing wall. There is now something for every child, from pre-school all the way through to yearsix. Finally, our special thanks go to parent Hannah Kelly who coordinated the fundraising in such an effective way and also for cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony. During March the science department and children fromthe Science Club hosted an event with a difference. Pupilsfamilies were invited to school one evening to take part ina fictional murder mystery! The science labs were put to good use as pupils andparents used chemical tests, microscopes and Bunsenburners to look for clues in the murder victims stomach contents as well as soil samples and fibres found at thescene of the crime. As if that werent exciting enough, the children were thrilled to receive a visit recentlyfrom a well known author. Caroline Lawrence writes the popularRoman Mysteriesseries of books which tell fast-pacedtales of fictional adventures in Ancient Rome. The children were fascinated by her artefacts and her livelyaccount of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the subsequent destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum. After her talks, Caroline signed the childrens own books brought in from home and was interviewed byone of the Year 5 children who is a reporter for the student newspaper. Missing key men Joe Stokes (injured), Tom Anderson (suspended) and Giancarlo Gabbiadini (international duty), Rovers had led the tie in difficult conditions, but were eventually beaten, in what was to be a close encounter. Fear not - there is a final to fight for in May and we hope to bring pictures against Poole in the Gary Else Mem. League Cup Final in Bristol. In the league, the team has bounced back after a little wobble and a convincing win v Salisbury was followed by another thrashing - this time at home to Bridgwater with a 9-0 win. Giancarlo Gabbiadini made his seasons tally to over 50 goals in all competitions - no mean achievement at any level. Confidence has returned with the team almost back to full strength and the future looks bright as the season draws to a close. There are some big matches left and the title is not yet in their grasp - but fingers crossed ! Youth & Praise! Take the Opportunity! Last month I was unable to submit an article to contribute to NN as I was in Germany on a trip with my school over the February half term. Upon returning from Berlin, I got to thinking how grateful I am to be presented with a broad selection of trips to foreign countries that are offered routinely to secondary school pupils. Local schools are fortunate enough to provide culturally enriching and eye-opening trips to many places of interest, both across the country and abroad. I believe that this is extremely beneficial to teenagers in the 21st century because it not only means that we are aware of our surroundings and how other people in other countries are living. School trips also give us the opportunity to experience and embrace different lifestyles and cultures. The experience helps you gain confidence and can also open up more future career options and life choices resulting from the knowledge gained. Ive been lucky to have been to several European Countries with school and have found them inspirational. It all starts when you say yes. We will also look for evidence of eco-friendly gardening, not using pesticides, composting, rain water collection and the use of plants to control slugs. No registration is needed. To join in all you need to do is to tend your garden with the idea of attracting wild life and colour... and then just wait and see if a certificate drops through your letterbox. Info from Town Clerk 833592 FGR Soccer Camp is back! Forest Green Rovers has again teamed up with Andy Tucker Soccer Camps to offer children two brilliant days of footballing fun at The New Lawn.On Monday the 4th and Tuesday the 5th of April, boys and girls from school reception age upwards can head to The New Lawn for a couple of days of football activities with training sessions, competitions, tournaments, stadium tours and much more all packed in. The price for the two full days is set at 28 or for those attending two half days it is 18. You can book your children in for the camps online www.forestgreenroversfc.com or telephone 01453 834860 I have resided here in Woodchester for about nine months now and I swear people are generally nicer than other places I have lived. People say hi more often, new friends are much more kindly, and today I want to show gratitude for the Fishmongers at Morrisons. Before Christmas one of them actually spent 15 minutes showing me how to fillet a whole salmon - what a great lesson. And after arriving just at closing time last night I turned up asking for one of the half price offers whole salmon which I wanted the head and tail removing. I noticed all the washing down was complete and so I said that Id return this morning. Which I didnt manage to do. So I called them at mid day to ask to keep one back if they were selling fast - which they were. Only two left. The young man recognised me and said hed put one away for me - Then he offered to fully fillet it. How good a service is that. Im delighted. Thank you Morrisons Fishmongers. Much appreciated! Sidtsara Ross Do Good, Feel Great - They are Hiking for your Mind! St. Georges and Christ Church Well, the Easter eggs have been eaten and now we wait for the weather to catch up with our insistence that it is Spring. The weather is one thing that we can always talk about is it goingto snow in April, will we get an Indian summer in September, will we get a summer at all? We spend huge amounts of time thinking and talking about the weather. The weather that we are expecting, and the weather we have experienced. Often we arewaiting to see what the weather will do so much can dependon whether it rains or is sunny! The same is true in our lives so much can depend on whether it rainsor is sunny do we feelgloomy or happy. And we are so often waitingand worrying about whatwill happen next. There is a difference between waiting (being content tosee what happens) andworrying (fretting about thepossibilities). Waiting can be frustrating, but generallyit builds the anticipation. Worrying is, quite frankly, exhausting. So is it simply a case ofDont worry, be happy! Well, its often not that simple. Generally we worry because we like to be in control and, for some reason, we cant. Thankfully we have a God who tells us not to worry He has it in hand. But we are human and we dont like to let go, so its tough. And what happens if the thing we are worrying about stillhappens did God forget? Christians believe that God never forgets us, and when stuff happens that isnt so great God is there helping us through. That can sound a bit unrealistic, but you only need to ask Christians who face worry how theymanage and theyll tell you sometimeswe cling on by our fingertips but weknow that is all we need. God is rightthere, and it makes all the difference. Time for a spring-clean time to share those worries? Come along and chat toMike (St Georges), or me (Christ Church) and lets talk about a God who cares about the things you worry about. Start and finish is unknown as yet so a huge amount of physical preparation is being taken on in readiness! All this is in order to support Mind, the national Mental Health charity. Linda and Sarah have both worked and volunteered for many years locally for the Independence Trust, which is a charity that supports adults with poor mental health, and they therefore know how important every penny is in supporting people and raising awareness of the help that can be had. Mental health problems have always been within our society and only now doesthis problem receive seriousattention from the powers thatbe. Figures show that 1 in 4people have mental healthissues in their lifetime and more than 100,000 will have spent some time in hospitalwith a mental health problem. Over 100 people per weekwill take their own lives. These are shocking figures and Linda and Sarah are determined to do their bit to take part in the Mind Hike 2016 supporting the MindMental Health Charity. The Independence Trust is very active in the local area and supports people from18 upwards and fromall social, economic and working backgrounds - onemay be surprised by whopops in for support (bothlong term and short term) and what their stories are. Simple support groupson an individual and grouplevel include art, knitting, coffee and chat, swimming, community cafe and avariety of talks from peopleon chosen subjects. We are here to help create social links within the community, get people back into education if needed, support people socially and creatively and show them thatthere are many who really do care and can really help. Linda and Sarah are hoping to raise at least 2000 justto be able to take part in the Mind Challenge. Fundraisingis taking place right now! Can you help? Can you offer support in any way? Originally a tannery, The Britannia is an early 18C Cotswold stone inn and, with the George, is one of the few that is still in business today. The New Stroud Directory of 1909 includes the following advertisement: Britannia Inn, Nailsworth. HH Smith begs to inform his old customers and the public generally that a full license has now been granted to the above inn, and that he is now in a position to supply wines and spirits of the same good quality as during his 14 years tenancy of the New Inn. Good stabling, large spare ground standings, etc, loose boxes. Excellent accommodation for footballers. The first recorded landlord is William Davis in 1891, and Herbert H Smith was landlord from 1909 to the 1930s. The Kings Head sat on the boundary between Horsley and Avening at the Cross, recorded from 1820, with a separate jug & bottle entrance for takeaway ales. The earliest recorded landlord was Walter James in 1894. It closed in the 1950s. (Photo c.1870.) 1910 and became a boardinghouse. In 1903, unlike the pubs in town, this one closedat 10pm. The earliest recorded landlady was Mrs Lizzie Evansin 1885. It has recently changedhands and continues to thrive. In 1891, Lucy E Pockette, Widow is recorded as the Hotel Keeper. Charles Dickens was reported to have stayed here. Britannia Photos courtesy ofNailsworth Town Archives Nailsworths early Pubs There were formerly 21 Inns in Nailsworth, of which seven were in and around Market Street. It is small wonder therefore that there was much drunkenness. This was general throughout the country, as the Beer Act of 1830 allowed an unlimited number of public houses in any village. That this presented a major problem is shown by the existence of the Detention Cell for Drunks, and by the fact that in 1865 Hillers opened a reading room for its workers, where various recreational facilities were provided in the hope that it might tempt the men away from the public houses. Eight inns were closed in 1910 after Nailsworth Brewery was taken over by Cheltenham Brewery in 1908. These were The Red Lion, The Brewery Tap in Brewery Lane, The New Inn, Jack of the Nick in Ragnal Lane, The Rock and Fountain (attached to the quarries in Nympsfield Road the name is still on the side of the cottage), The Upper Star in Forest Green, The Nags Head and Kings Head opposite Dunkirk Mills. (The background map dates from 1885.) Originally Corunna House builtc1810, the building became apub with the arrival of the trainto Nailsworth in 1867, and laterThe Railway Hotel which ran until 1914. The stables and coach houses were in the yard at theback. It continued as an ale house and was taken over by StroudBrewery in 1958, closing in1970, with Matthew and Renee Hanratty the last landlords. The New Inn closed about in 1967 to make way for thenew road from Spring Hillthrough to Cossack Square. Records show the licensees were Edwin Cox in 1858, John Essex in 1885, Mrs Evans 1886 and 1890, Herbert Smith 1897 and 1902. 14 15 HORSFALL HOUSE Windmill Road, Minchinhampton, Stroud, Glos GL6 9EY Registered Charity No: 287479 A Purpose-built Nursing Home, Day Resource Centre and Home Care Provider The Local Care Home for Local Older People Home Care Services . The recent FGR match v Grimsby seems to have been the last straw. Although 10 tickets were issued for inappropriate parking, it is obvious that this is just the tip of the iceberg. One only has to drive around the area during home matches and see the scores of cars badly parked, some blocking driveways of residents, others making access down some of the narrower roads almost impassable for emergency vehicles, if the need was there. An angry and concerned resident (name and address supplied) who represents a growing army of frustrated home owners says in a letter to anyone who will listen - We regrettably live in a society where no one individual wishes to take ownership of responsibility for which their role is played out through either their paid job and or for recreational purposes. Notably, the above applies to Forest Green Rovers, Traffic Wardens, the Local council and the Police Several approaches have been made to the club staff, police and traffic wardens requesting their intervention but to no avail. The same old response is given; for example, Its not our responsibility any more so you need to see the Traffic Warden or Sorry, you need to approach the football club representative and so on. Stroud Life is also aware of the parking problem and in a recent article Dale Vince (Chairman FGR) said, Weve worked on the parking problems around The New Lawn for the last few years, doing what we can. For bigger games we encourage Gloucestershire County Council to put a Temporary Traffic Order (TTO) in place on Spring Hill this creates a No Parking zone to keep the road clear for local residents and traffic coming and going to the game. And for the bigger games, when crowds are expected to be over 3,000, we operate a Park & Ride scheme with the support of Renishaw, that reduces traffic on Spring Hill and parking in Nailsworth. Weve doubled the size of the car park at the stadium in the last couple of years and improved parking. We encourage the use of public transport (though its a bit limited) and have a good partnership with Nailsworth Primary School, creating overflow car parking. Unfortunately, the problem with bad parking is rarely from Nailsworth residents - it is from fans outside the area who travel by car. It is hard to know where to start with regard to tackling the problem, but perhaps if everyone in Forest Green tells the Club about concerns and gets it to publicise that wardens will give tickets and that the police will act, then something may happen. As was mentioned recently, why is there just a Park & Ride for gates over 3,000? Why not 2,000? We all want FGR to do well and get promoted. If and when that comes, the attendances will become increasingly larger and should a new stadium be on the cards near Stonehouse, that will be years away in its completion. Until then, should the residents have to accept inconsiderate parking (albeit a few times a year) or will it take an emergency vehicle that is unable to get to a scene to get the message home? On the 12th April at 2pm there will be an inaugural meeting where anyone can drop-in and get basic help and support with using a computer. GRCC believe that group learning, in a computer club, is essential in tackling digital exclusion. Often it is a lack of confidence and worries about online security that stop adults from using computer devices. In a group setting, where everyone is learning the basics, adults can ask questions and gain reassurance together without fear of embarrassment. GRCC hope that they can recruit volunteers to give guidance and help to people who want to learn the basics. FGR has been at The New Lawn for nearly ten years, but the move will be good for other football sides in Nailsworth. Teams that currently play on the pitch at KGV could relocate to the better facilities up the hill, and as the KGV pitch is limited in size, this could be very beneficial. Town leaders have been looking for other gains from the move and innovative plans for additional parking and restaurants in town have been advanced. A 450 space car park will take pressure off the town centre, and new access roads will relieve congestion at Tabrahms Pitch. The Skate park will be relocated to the Extension Field to keep skaters away from cars, and free up space for a Drive-Thru fast food outlet. In the short term a burger bar will operate from hardstanding by the tennis courts and play area. The plans have been well received, with residents, traders, youngsters and footballers all delighted at the proposed benefits. One Park Road resident said, Its fantastic news. Ill be able to park outside my house again. The small increase in traffic on Park Road is a price well worth paying for that. A spokesperson for the towns traders commented on the new parking proposal. We welcome this as often our shoppers cannot park, given that there just arent enough spaces for residents and our staff. The skate park relocation, which should allow for a new concrete half-bowl and an extra angle-grind rail, was going to be peng, one of the lads using the existing ramps told us. We can get on with our flips, mashes and scrozzers without disturbing the honge. Another commented on the new site in the Extension Field, Its quite damp up there, which is great when things go wrong - soft landing - dench! The Council declined to comment but a source close to it said, Everyone will be happy, residents, sports players, traders, shoppers. Weve got a use for the Extension Field and just think of the parking income well get! Its win, win, win, win, win! It seems that the time has come to talk about Station Road. This is where Egypt Mill and the Fire Station are, starting with an ancient bridge over the river. People have different views, but there is an interesting collection of old and new in the area, and looking up the hill is the attractive hamlet of Watledge. From the bridge, you go down Station Road to get to the Cycle Track, and there are more modern houses there, as well as the old Railway Station, which has been sympathetically restored by its owners. However, running through all this is Station Road, which is a mess, and has been so for years. The trouble is that it is not maintained by the Local Authority it is unadopted. Once you get past the Fire station, you will not be able to walk on the pavement because of construction site safety hurdles, which are protecting a great deal of inactivity, not to mention the cables sticking out of the pavement (properly sealed of course). The road is barely made up with iron work still standing above the TRISTAN FIELD GARDEN SERVICES Established 1992 Commercial & Domestic Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping Tel: 01453 832620 Mob: 07778 312827 tfieldgardenservices@btinternet.com WINDOW CLEANER? On the other side of the road is a sight to behold trees planted along a lovely old wall. They are planted inches away from the wall a suicide strip for stone walls, and not likely to aid driving down the road in years to come. If you go a bit further, round the corner you meet hoardings that have seen better days. If you did not know better, you would think you were on the verge of a Refugee Camp in Calais. The whole effect is messy, and at least unfinished looking. We think the photographalongside this article says it all. This is what is faced by the manypeople who use the Cycle Track runners, cyclists, dog walkers, and people just enjoying the scenery. This is what the people living in the houses by the Cycle Track face every day, and anybody visiting them must wonderwhat they are coming to. At least the residents there keep the vegetation next to the Cycle Track trimmed back. There is a history of planning applications for the area, and on at least two occasions the Town Council has recommended that Station Road be brought up to County Council Highway standards. Ofcourse nothing so far has happened. So the question is when will somebody do something about Station Road, andstop this being a blight on the face ofNailsworth? Well, we are pleased to tell readers that we have just heard that the Nailsworth Town Council is currently investigating the status and history of Station Road. We have a feeling that we will be returning to this subject infuture issues of the Nailsworth News. Prov.Gr.M.of Gloucestershire and representation from each of the Stroudbased Masonic lodges visited Stroud Court CommunityTrust. They saw the pioneering work being undertaken to improve life for adults with autism. During the visit, John Thurston presented a cheque for 1,000 from the Gloucestershire Masonic Charities Action Fund toward a project to be undertaken jointly withvolunteers of Nailsworth Rotary Club. Through collaboration these two organisations are able to achieve a far better outcome for the autistic adults at Stroud Court. For the last 12 months, Nailsworth Rotary Club hassupported the charityin order to breathe life into under utilized areas in our grounds. They have madehuge improvementsto our sensory gardenwhich is now a peaceful haven ofcalm for the residents to enjoy. They have refurbished the NymphGarden, pruning backovergrown foliage and seeding grass areas. Inaddition they have builtthree raised beds to enable residents to enjoy planting flowers for arranging andto grow vegetables for the table. The project will improve access to a much enjoyed meadowarea which has become difficult to access as the residents age and experience a decrease in mobility. The new access will make a tremendous difference to the residents as it is a favourite place for relaxation and group picnics. John Thurston commented, I have been incredibly impressed with the work being undertaken here and ampleased to be part of an initiative involving collaborativeworking between the Gloucestershire Masonic CharityAction and the Nailsworth Rotary Club. It is great to see firsthand the difference the project will make and how the residents will benefit. Chris Atkins, Executive Director of Stroud Court said Its been an honour to receive our important guests and somany of the local Brethren here today and we are incrediblygrateful for the very generous donation. The current pressure on public funds is being felt everywhere and we allmust try to become as efficient and effective as possible. I believe it is through joint projects such as this that we canachieve the best outcomes for our vulnerable clients. Despite being one of the UKs leading providers of accommodation and support for autisticadults with complexneeds, Stroud Court has been referred to as Stroud Valleys Hidden Charity. It is coordinated by Nailsworth Health Partnership which has been a registered charity since 2015 and starts as the NailsworthFestival comes to a close on the May bank holiday andcontinues until Sunday 5th June. We are continuing with some firm favourites and also trying out some new ideas. The ever popular pamper walks, the Glendower walk, the bird watching and the Industry walk with Ian Mackintosh will all be there and we are repeating the Ice Cream walk. The joint NHP/Festival walk on 29th May is a circular walk. In the Steps of E P Conway, it celebrates the work of this well-known photographer. The Town Archive volunteers have selected some of the photographs he took in this area and ourwalk will enable us to see the same views that he did - but also to observe how the landscape has changed over the last Century. There will be an all day walk and workshop on Sunday 5thJune. In the morning there will be a walk where we observeour surroundings and either sketch or print our reactions. In the afternoon the Footprint workshop willenable these creations to be made into a book or a communal piece of art. If you would like a walk in a wood where the invitation is to wake up the senses, relax and unwindthen Wild in the Country led by artist and musician Ruth Liengaard is the walk to join. For children and young people there will bat watching (need to stay up later for that), a walk run by a Forest Teacher and an introduction to geocaching starting from the Arkell Centre. Our talk this year will be like a panel discussion where several people who have completed wellknown long distance footpaths will reflect on their experiences and what it has meant to them. All this and more will be in the leaflet which will be available after Easter. In the meantime check out the NHP website for details of the walks as they are confirmed. As I write this article there is only one week left to play in the Stroud & District Table Tennis league, and what a season it has been for Nailsworth Phoenix table tennis club. We have already finished as champions of Divisions 2 and 3 and we are strongly placed in Division 4 being guaranteed a topthree position there. Apart from the silverware and the accompanying league promotions the most pleasing aspect is watching everybodys games improving, especially the junior players in our ranks (of whom there are many). But we dont just pack up and wait for the new season to start next September - we are open throughout the summer. Our popular Saturday mornings stay the same, but we are no longer open for practise on Mondays. We are now open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday will be open practise and Thursday evening will be structured coaching. Some of our juniors are playing in the StroudJunior summer league on Sunday mornings. We are now looking for some new junior boys and girls to come and join us and maybe youcould be making the headlines in a years time? Youngsters of any age are welcome - preferably under 80! We offer facilities to play socially, but also the chance to play more competitively in the league if you wish. We look forward to seeing you. Please contact Andy Hammond on 885393 for more information or visit our website: www. nailsworthphoenix.co.uk Bragging Rights in Nailsworth lie (just) with FGR for themoment with a close fought match withShortwood Utd in the GFA cup tie. Almost 350 watched a fine game wherechances were few, but still there was plenty to watch and enjoy. A world-class flying save from Eve kept Shortwood at bay and a 1-1 drawat the final whistle was about right. FGR won on penalties 4-3 in a suddendeath finish which gave all the crowdssomething to cheer about. Shortwood were certainly notoverawed by their high-flyingopponents and there was little betweenthe sides. Shortwoods defence was excellent as was FGRs with two Academy players (Ripley and Dodson) keepingMorford and Lee quiet! Can we have an annual local derby? Its good for the soul and could be a charitable cause as well! The recent win at Gateshead was superb (and just revenge!) and puts the team back in real contention for automaticpromotion as Champions, but it is going to be hardwork. Has the truly dire performance against Aldershot on Good Friday scuppered the season? One will haveto wait and see. Goals are drying up at the wrong timein the season. Crosses are coming in but there is little Sport contact in the goal area. The midfield isnt scoring either. In this department we have lost that killer touch a Forest Green Rovers has now broken its pointstotal in this league and with 5 games remaining are all set for a grand finale by the end of April. Life is all about ifs and buts. IF FGR had performed betterunder the cameras v Grimsby and at least have gained a point against a fine side and IF we had put just a few of those chances away when we played Gateshead at home earlier inthe season, then we would be sitting pretty at the top of theleague. If ! But, the fine performance against promotion seeking Eastleigh showed that the team has the know-how and thephysical strength to get past a major hurdle. little - free flowing brilliance on many occasions is notbeing put into real chances in front of goal. All the creative passing in the world doesnt win matches, goals do! And it helps to shoot on sight! Cheltenham has a far greater goal difference and that is worth an extra few points too, so every FGR goal from wherever itcomes is now more vital than ever. Is there a Plan B? Teams seem to find it quite easy to defend against FGR just now and break down the attacks quiteeasily. Now is the final push and we all have our bit to play, especially since FGRs run-in is not the easiest. www.forestgreenroversfc.com A great place to work ...
