It has taken her six weeks from start to finish and it is being raffled at the end of July in the hope of raising at least £100 for Cancer Research and MacMillan Nurses. Matthew and Hannah Beardshall have been busy at Wild Garlic Restaurant & Rooms in NailsworthÕs Cossack Square fornearly nine years now. Certainly not the sort to Òrest on theirlaurelsÓ they re-launched last week as ÔWild Garlic Bistro and RoomsÕ. Inspiration for the new menu at Wild Garlic Bistro came from sitting in thesunshine in Cossack Square and wanting tooffer a more relaxed style of dining. MatthewÕs new menu features plenty oftasty Ôsmall platesÕ to share (inspired by thepopular Tapas menus served over the lastfew years), tasty salads, mouth-wateringsteaks and delicious house made pastadishes, to mention just a few. With three young children of their own, there is also a lovely childrenÕs menu, serving what Hannah describes as ÔproperfoodÕ that they are sure children will enjoy. Matthew says, ÒWe are really gratefulto all our customers who have chosen to support a local family business. We are looking forward to this next stage of ourjourney in beautiful Nailsworth. Lisa Parker 5 Jonathan Duckworth The New Mayor of Nailsworth We at Nailsworth News wish to congratulate our long standing team member, Jonathan Duckworth, on becoming theMayor of Nailsworth. Jonathan has workedwith Nailsworth News since the early daysof the paper, and he provides our email and website facilities as well as technical advice and training on our desktop publishingsoftware. Jonathan makes a valuable contribution to our discussions. Some of our readers may be asking ifNailsworth News is being taken over bythe Town Council? Well the answer is emphatically No! The Committee that runs NN has looked very carefully at potential conflicts of interestin retaining Jonathan on the team. We were naturally keen to keep such a knowledgeableand respected team member withoutcompromising our constitution. Jonathan has been a Councillor for a number of years, as well as being DeputyMayor in the past, and he has always formallyand properly recognised and declared his rolewithin the Town Council. We therefore agreed that Jonathan should continue to carry out his valuable work forNN and we are thankful for his invaluable time. To put it simply, when Jonathan is working with NN he will not be wearing the MayorÕs hat and chain of office, but will continue to participate as every other member of the team. To mark this special occasion all fourteen children (10 boys and 4 girls) accompanied bytheir class teacher, teaching assistant and Headteacher, attended the traditional LeaversÕ Service held by Gloucester Dioceseat Gloucester Cathedral. This special event gives the children the opportunity to feel part of a wider group by coming together with children from all church schools in the diocese who will be starting their secondary education later this year. The service reflected on their time in primary school and looked ahead to their future school life. The children had a cake sale in school and the money raised was donated to thePeace and Hope Trust collection. Whilst in Gloucester the children also enjoyed a visitto the Climbing Centre and a tour of thecathedral and stone masonsÕ yard. At the end of this term we will also be saying goodbye to David Williams, our interim Headteacher, who has been at the helm since January whilst a new permanent head was being recruited. We would like to thank David for keepingthe school on an even keel these past sixmonths and for the many positive changeshe has implemented in such a short space oftime. Nailsworth to make history - vote on 18th August On August 18th you will have an opportunity to make history by voting in a Town-wide referendum. The referendum will be on whether 10 new affordable homes should be built near Lawnside. The homes will be owned by the Nailsworth Community Land Trust (CLT), which is made up of local people supported by the Town Council. Your vote is needed The question on the ballot paper will be whether youagree to a CRTBO - a Community Right to Build Order - effectively planning permission decided bythe community. CRTBOs were introduced by the Localism Act 2011 to enable communities to proposecommunity-led developments. Homes to be owned by the townforever The CLT feel it is important to keep the homes for the benefit of the town. So the referendum proposes that both the Right to Buy and the Right to Acquire be removed. This will mean that the homes cannot be sold off and will stay in town ownership for ever. The homes will initially be offered to those on the Stroud Housing List with Nailsworth connections. This has all come from a Town Council Housing Needs Survey carried out in 2013, which highlighted 52 households in need of affordable housing. There are no SDC plans for additional affordable housing in Nailsworth so community action is required! The proposed developmentSDC has offered the CLT the garage site by lower Lawnside. Aster Homes (a housing association) and gcp Architects have worked with the CLT to draw up a proposal. This is for 10 affordable homes: 6 x one bedroom, 2 person maisonette flats, and 4 x two bedroom, 4 person houses. There will be 15 car parking spaces. The proposed houses and flats are designedsimply with tiled pitched roofs, matchingthe form of existing buildings onLawnside and Fieldways. Make Nailsworth make historyMost CLTs are in rural areas so NailsworthÕs urban CLT is groundbreaking. Please vote on 18thAugust for this innovative developmentof affordable homes for Nailsworth. It is hard to put into words how amazing they are. On our visit to the Grand Canyon we walked a trail that gave the geological history of all the different layers. We learned that it had taken 30 million years to carve out the canyon and that it was still being carved out by a depth of the thickness of one piece of paper each year. We also learned that there was 1.2 million years of history in the rocks that was completely missing due to erosion. The scale of the place, together with the age of some of the rocks we were looking at made me feel incredibly small and the span of my years on earth seemed completely inconsequential. And yet, at the same time, I was reminded about GodÕs words in the bible, about knowing the number of hairs on our heads, knowing us by name and holding each of us in the palm of his hand. So, as I stood looking at so much history in rock, I also felt how wonderful it is to be loved by God Ð how precious we are in his sight, each and every one of us. It is that knowledge and promise that can sustain us when things get tough or we feel as though no-one really cares. If you need to be reminded of that, just pop along to St. GeorgeÕs or Christ Church and seek out GodÕs company and he will reassure you of his love for you. Every blessing - Mike and Helene. Rev. Tetbury was the point on my journey from where I could get on to the A429 and A350 for hopefully a straight run to the coast. I approached Nailsworth (from Stroud) andsaw a sign to Tetbury, showing a LH turn. I followed this road, a winding and steep road(which I thought was dangerous), and reachedthe top. I carried on, seeing a 40mph speed limitin the middle of the road, and then felt a bump. My car and I were deposited in a field. At no point had I seen any warning signs, or whitelines to denote cross roads, or give way signs. I should explain that my hearing is not toogood, and I am not too familiar with mobilephones. Within a few minutes a kind gentleman approached, asked if I was OK, and offered me a cup of tea. A young girl also approached to check on me, and very kindly lent me hermobile to contact the breakdown people. Ineeded their help on this to explain to therecovery people where exactly I was, as I foundit difficult to understand what was said, due to my hearing problems and poor reception. They were with me for half an hourapproximately, and the young lady would not take money offered for the use of the mobile. The recovery people had quoted about 90minutes for them to be on site, and in the meantime as I sat in my car, a number of kind passers by came to check on me. Another kind gentleman arrived on the scene in a large car at around the time the breakdown truck arrived. He assisted the breakdown mechanic and made it easier to get my car on to therecovery vehicle, and from there I was takento Gloucester Railway station. My 20 year oldRover was taken to the scrap yard to end itsdays. I did not receive any injuries in the incident, I was just understandably a little shook up. Iwould just like to offer my thanks to all those kind people who came to my assistance (CupFinal day), and have come to the conclusionthat there are a number of heroes and stars in your community of whom you should be proud. Camping on the farm started nineyears ago and has proved remarkablysuccessful, now accommodating 15,000 people a year, including many repeat visitors. Many of its campers come into Nailsworth and take advantage of all that the town has to offer. Camping at Thistledown is also popular with locals, as once you are on the farm, itÕs like being in a different world. This certainly saves on travel time and holiday traffic jams. The Fieldfare CafŽ serves drinks and excellent coffee (this is the only campsite in the world with a la Marzocco coffee machine!) and wonderful homemade cakes and cream teas. The farm shop focuses on local produce. The kitchen is beingexpanded and there will soonbe pizza and slow-roastedmeals cooked in the wood-fired clay oven. It has an eventslicence and will be organising music, film, theatre and dance evenings in due course, but it has drawn the line at live wrestling. Work off your coffee and cake with a walk around five-or-so acres of the farm which is open to CafŽ customers. Dogs are welcome on a lead, so asnot to jeopardise the abundant wildlife. The 1st Nailsworth Company was formed in 1915, but officially registeredon 26th June 1916 and it has been flourishing ever since. M M ildred Humpidge (County Sec.) wrote in April 1954: It was registered in 1916. The first Captain was Miss Phyllis Smythe, who is now Mrs Tuft, the dentistÕs wife. The Company was going before 1916, I think, as my own Company, the 1st Rodborough, started in August 1914, and I should think it was the same time that we were all Ôroute-marchingÕ when one day along the road from Woodchester, to our astonishment came a similar troop, also route-marching. We had no idea of each otherÕs existence É we soon became friends and had our first camp, a weekend one, held in large empty house on Spring Hill, on the left going up, in extreme discomfort, when we were joined by Guides from Cheltenham and also Wotton-under-Edge. T T he Girl Guides sprung out of the BoyScouts movement started by Baden- Powell. It was his wife, Olave, who felt it was unfair that boys should haveall the fun - why not girls too? She became the first Chief Guide leader andÔthe rest is historyÕ. 1957 R R ight from the very start, the Nailsworth Guides were veryactive. The War Service Badge could be worked for - nursing, hospital help, first aid etc. making garments for theneedy and for the War effort, working for War Departments and on land projects. Doris Brinkworth was one of the firstNailsworth badge holders. T T he extensive hand-written records of weekend field trips andcamping events contain classic reading, and it appears littlehas changed! A 1925 report mentions for a certain camp nearby: 7 bell tents of which 5 were leaking, wash places, 4 lats, 2 dixies, 4 herdalls, blankets, steel buckets, tin bowls, enamel bowls etc. Apart from a few basic amenities, guides and their junior counterparts deal with similar ÔhardshipsÕ on camp, though many more items are plastic! W W hat is the Girl Guides organisation for? 1961 ÒConfidence building, learning newskills, gaininga wider perspectiveof the world through playand activities suited for each age range. Recently the girls hadan evening talk withreptiles and snakes - it wasfascinating and a chance tohandle snakes and an arrayof amphibians. All of these activities lead to a variety of Badges. This year there are two tripssorted, one to Cadbury World to help complete the ÔChocolateÕbadge and later to Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour for theannual camping trip and more badges! Guides are encouraged to choose and plan their own activitieswhich can include themed evenings, doing an ÔinterestÕ badge oraÕGo for itÕ which are patrol based activities. 1947 C C amps have changed very little over the years. ÔField MiceÕ (camp patrol) of 8 August 1981 records: We were very lazy. We got up at 7.30. We had to be told to get up. We filled up the water containers we were Ôhealth patrol.Õ We came back to our tents for our diddy bags ready for breakfast of prorogue, billed eggs, bread and butter and a cuppa. We then washed up scrubbed all the bowls, kettles, billies etc. We then went back to our tent and everyone done their bedding rolls, took everything out of their haversacks, packed again neatly andoff to the day tent. We dryer the sod cloth and took out the brailing pegs É we sorted out the wood and got ready for our picnic dinner and gave out badges and presents. Sue had a massive present but it turned out to be tiny. We took our tents and went home. (GuideÕs own words and spelling) T T he Promise of any Guide remains primarily as it was set up 100 years ago. TodayÕs version which takes in modern customs etc. is: ÒI promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve The Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the Guide Laws.Ó The Guiding movement takes girls from Rainbows (5 years) to Senior Guides (14 - 25). The tasting was presented by ÔWoodchester ValleyVineyardÕ have vineyards locatednear Nailsworth. Guests enjoyeda sparkling presentation by Salesand Marketing Manager Simon Taylor and vineyard owner FionaShiner along with a chance toask questions and sample somedelicious wines. Woodchester Valley Vineyardbegan with a trial acre in 2007 andharvesting for production started in2010. With 45 acres situated over three sites (Amberley, Woodchester and Doverow Hill in Stonehouse) there are 60,000 vinesrequiring careful hand pruning and harvesting. The vineyard produces quality still white, rosŽ andsparkling English wines which adhere to strict EuropeanPDO or PGI food standard guidelines. The wines can only be classified as English if the grapes are all grown onEnglish soil whereas British wine is made from importedgrapes or grape concentrate that is then made into wine inthe UK. The soaring popularity of English wines over the pastdecade has seen many more vineyards planted in Englandand Wales in recent years with 502 currently listed on theEnglish Wine Producers website. English wine is also competing favourablyagainst established foreign wines and winning international awards. In fact, ona recent blind-tasting in Paris, English sparkling wines scored better than theFrench Champagne equivalent! Asked about cork versus screw caps, the answer was simple: the pop of a corkis wonderful, but there is nothing wrong with screw caps; they provide the perfectseal and are impervious to cork taint. So there we have the definitive answer! For more details about the wines and vineyard on our doorstep, visit - www.woodchestervalleyvineyard.co.uk or call Simon: 07710 605558 Dying without a Will. A new waste and recycling service will happen later this year. This will allow households to recycle their food wasteas well as items already placed in recycling binsand boxes. It is also moving over to a new waste contractor, part of this project included a review of recyclingsites across the district. The large banks at these sites allow residents torecycle cardboard, paper, plastics, glass, cans andtins Ð all of which can be recycled at home. With this in mind together with the relativelysmall amount of material collected through thissystem, it has been decided to remove most of thelarge banks from these sites and focus only onthe collection of textiles, shoes, media and small WEEE which cannot be recycled at home. All recycling sites will have these facilities. It will, however, maintain two of the largerbanks in two locations Ð one at Cainscross (Stroud) and the other in Cam (CPC car park) - as it is appreciated that they may be useful. It is noted that this may cause some residents alittle inconvenience. However it is hoped that thiswill be minimal as collection is already in placedirectly from residentÕs homes. Little things like just wanting one red biro Christian Aid Walk - Twenty five people set off from Christ Church on Festival Saturday to walk to Christ Church, Tetbury in aid of Christian Aid. The Rev. Stuart Radford , the minister of Christ Church, Tetbury, who also worships atNailsworth organised this event and it raised a terrific amount. A Coffee Morning beforehand gave the dogs and some walkers, the latter aged from 7 - 81, a goodsend off. The forecast of rain kept away (just) for most of the route and an excellent Cream Tea greeted the walkers at the end of their 5.6 mile walk. It was all very much worth it and the camaraderie from the trek was as valuable as the sum raised! Rev. Stuart adds a personal message, ÒA big thank you to all who walked, sponsored , and helpedour walk from Christ Church Nailsworth to Christ Church Tetbury. We had good weather for nearly all the 16 walks but the rain on June 1st did not deter the 19 people wh,owere lead by Anthony Burton to each of the 4 houses in which the ÔSuper TrampÕ W H Davis lived. At each house, poems by W H Davis were read. A new departure this year was a Robin Hood walk led by Forest Teacher Carrie Roet (see comment page 4). 20 children (and their parents/ grandparents) thoroughly enjoyed making fire, clay pots, bows and arrows and acting outthe story of this Nottingham legend inHorsley woods. We shared the takings on 3 walks with Stroud Valleys Project (the bat walk), the Nailsworth Festival (in the steps of E P Conway which followed on from the exhibition in the Mortimer rooms of ConwayÕs photographs) and Stroudwater Textile Trust (walking the Horsley Brook). So if you think Twenty20 is exciting, come and see the real thing at Nympsfield on Sunday21st August 2016. Commoners and their invited teams will assemble at 11 oÕclock to start six league games Ð each lasting just an hour - withthe top two teams going head-to-head in afinal. Runs will flow in torrents, with more than a 1,000 being scored during the day. The competition will be fierce because although Commoners are the current holders, in recent times every other visitor has been a finalist. You can bet each will be bursting a blood vessel to carry off the trophy for 2016! There is ample parking space and plenty of room for children to play. The food and refreshment facilities are superb. NympsfieldÕs own Barmy Army will be in fine voice. Entrance is free. Support your trail-blazing local cricket club and have yourself a truly memorable day out.Ó www.commonerscricket.co.uk Rio is absolutelythrilled and thank you somuch! In the last issue we asked for anyoneto help sponsor Rio Russell Hughes in her eventing. We are thrilled that a local person withinminutes of seeing thearticle, made contact and after seeing Rio in action with her horse, stumpedup a Ôwonderful chequeÕ on the spot. Perhaps with this type of support and the talent that Rio also has, we may see her (not in Rio this year) but in futureOlympics and other big events closer to home! Support is still needed to purchase a horse box / horse lorry. Does anyone know of anything?
