The refuse collectors and SDC are aware of this and will take action soon unless this person behaves legally, socially and abides by the rules. The refuse bags that are left for days are often of the now illegal type and much of the refuse should not be dumped anyway - bottles and broken glass oftenmar the appearance too. A word from the Mayor Tenders on the council website In the next step in increasing transparency for the business of Council, we have put our first tender brief up on the council website. I think it is really important to ensure that work is awarded fairly, and that local companies have equal opportunity in tendering for council work. We are a local Council and we should support local business where possible. Anti Social Behaviour Unfortunately there was an increase in this behaviour towards the end of February and beginning of March. The Town Council has been working closely with the agencies and organisations that have a duty to deal with this. It is important for everyone to note that resolving this problem requires several different tactics. Some of these tactics are confidential and although it may appear that nothing is being done, this is not the case. The Police need evidence and the youngsters need to understand that their actions are damaging their future lives as well as the town. One key message to reiterate is that there needs to be as much evidence as possible, and this evidence is in the form of recorded incidents, reported to the Police by phoning 101 or e-mailing 101@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk You may also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous. Vacancy and TimetableLast month I wrote that there is a vacancy on Council and that an election could be called if ten or more electors asked for it. Well, a petition was received by SDC and there will be an election. The election date will be 4th May, and it will be held alongside the Council election on the same day. If there are no candidates the Council will have to co-opt a councillor. If there is only one candidate they will be elected unopposed, and if more than one there will be an election. Prospective candidates have until 4pm on the 4th April to register their candidacy. You can get forms from the Town Council Offices or SDC. Some key points we learned were: ¥ There are over 100 kinds of dementia. ¥ We should focus on the person, not just their dementia. ¥ Dementia might not only impact on memory, but also communication, perception and the ability to start or complete everyday tasks. ¥ A person can Ôlive wellÕ with dementia, carry on driving, shopping and enjoy hobbies. Creating a dementia friendly town can help aperson to stay active in our community. We talked about how small changes can make our public buildings and local businesses easier for a person living with dementia to use. We can do simple things to make it easier for a person to move around, find a place to sitand gather their thoughts and not be overwhelmed by busy information andnoise. We practiced using eye contact, tone of voice and encouraging words to help a confused person relax and communicate more easily. WeÕre proud of our new certificates and weÕre hoping to use what we learned to support local businesses who are interested in becoming dementiafriendly. Everyone is invited to see what our townhas to offer. The Town Council has to hold a public meeting once a year, to present a report of the Council activities and to answer questions from the public. In past years the Town Meeting has been a formal affair, with short presentations by groups active in the town. Whilst it has been a good way for these groups to report, generally the only attendees have been theorganisations reporting on their past yearÕs work. There has also been the formal MayorÕs Reception, where the Town Awards are presented, and this has been attended byinvited guests. We are trialling a new format by combining the two events into one andwe hope that more residents can come, sothat more see the townÕs activities and the Awards being presented. Any resident can ask a question aboutCouncil activities, we ask that questionsare put in writing to the Town Clerk prior to the Town Meeting. We will answer all questions, but if there is time pressure wewill give preference to written ones. Any others that we donÕt answer on the night will be answered on the Council website. Come along if you can, to see what yourtown does, it will be from 6.00pm-8.00pm20:00, in the Town Hall with public questions and Town Awards at 7.00pm. You donÕt have to be there for that part if you just want to see what is going onin Nailsworth - it should be a bit like a University Freshers Week Society Fair, so everyone is welcome to dip in and out. This involves sculptures of hares, hand painted and decorated by a range of localartists adorning public spaces and forming theCirencester Hare Trail. Due to its popularity, this year the Trail has been extended to cover the whole of the Cotswolds Ð now called The Cotswold Hare Trail Ð and there are eighty, five foot decorated hares in total, one of which will spend the next few months inNailsworth. NailsworthÕs hare, sandwiched on the trail between Stroud and Tetbury, is sponsored by Nailsworth Mills Estate. Our newcelebrity is called Hareloom a name suggested by its artist Rachel Shilston as a play on words, and celebrates thehistory of the woollen mills in Nailsworthand the Stroud Valley. Hareloom, takes its inspiration fromthe mills in the area, namely Ruskin, Days, Dunkirk and Egypt, the sheepfarming that served the mills, plus thesurrounding picturesque countryside. Dressed in clothes with a cheerful bustling view of the local areadepicted on his waistcoat and theold ram emblem of Nailsworth Mills on his tie, Hareloom will be spendingthe next few months taking in the view inGeorge Street. The Canal Trust has been working hard in the background, finalising their comprehensive plans to bring the canal back to Nailsworth. The stretch from Dudbridge to Egypt Wharf will be uncovered, it was last seen way back in 1864, whenthe project to bring the new-fangled Railway to Nailsworth meant the canal was filled in. It is the brainchild of canal veteran Denis Locke, 92, who has dreamt of this day since he heard the Stonehouseand Nailsworth Railway line was to be pulled up. ÒMygrandfather could remember the last boat that came down toEgypt Wharf, called the Dawn Star. It was a typical working narrow boat, but theyÕd decked it with flags and bunting. Locals lined the bank and cheered as it brought the last loadof coal to the wharf. It went back to Dudbridge, empty. It was a sad day, the end of an era.Ó The canal was a standard narrow, with 7ft locks and a T junction at Dudbridge/Ebley. There are 3.6 miles to be opened up, but Project Engineer Frank Kedger is keen topoint out that as the railway was built so hurriedly a lot ofthe original canal structure is still in place. ÒInitial diggingsshowed that the clay base still remains, and significantlengths of the original walling survive. ItÕs the locks that are giving me the most grief. There were locks at Lightpill, Woodchester, Frogmarsh and Inchbrook, so thatÕs four that weÕve got to build.Ó The digging will start at Egypt Mill, then progress back upto Dudbridge/Ebley. The Trust is liaising with the Cotswold Canal Trust for the design of the junction with Stroudwater Canal. Mr Kedger said, ÒWhen we join the re-opened canalup to the existing there will be 14 million gallons of waterto fill up our branch. ThatÕll mean no narrow boating on Stroudwater for three weeks.Ó Finance for the project is coming from a Heritage Grant and an anonymous benefactor who declined to comment. It is expected to bring an additional £4m per year to the tourist industry in Nailsworth. A spokesperson for Egypt Mill said they were going to be offering cruising weekends and mini- proper name, The Canal Hotel. WeÕve found a drawing of it in itÕs heyday, and there were traces of the original paint visible when breaks. They expected narrow- boaters from across the country to come and stay. ÒWe are even going to return the Railway Hotel to itÕs original, we refurbished the hotel two years ago. To think weÕll have a 40 boat marina here as part of our offer. ItÕs very exciting.Ó Mr. Locke said ÒI hope I live to see it open, with boatscoming down to Egypt Wharf and mooring up. YouÕll be able to go to Birmingham on a boat! To think I could see what my granddad saw. I well up thinking about it, proper tears, canaltears.Ó To find out more, there is information at the TrustÕs website http://bit.ly/1gho7il Photos The route of the canal in 1845 The Canal Hotel before it was renamed The Railway Hotel A typical canal marina LITHO ¥ DIGITAL ¥ LETTERPRESS LEOPARDPRESSLITHO PRINTING GRAPHIC DESIGN BOOK BINDING PRINT FINISHING THE CHICKEN SHACK, SELSLEY COMMON, WOODCHESTER, STROUD GL5 5PW 01453 872123 | STROUD@LEOPARDPRESS.COM CURTAINS ~ BLINDS ~ SOFT FURNISHINGS LOOSE COVERS ~ REUPHOLSTERY SERVICE For advice and estimate ring Jenny Powell Wright Interiors ~ 01453 768899 TRISTAN FIELD GARDEN SERVICES Established 1992 Commercial & Domestic Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping Tel: 01453 832620 Mob: 07778 312827 tfieldgardenservices@btinternet.com IÕm a friendly local computer expert offering PC support and tuition for homes and businesses. Youth Youth Libby Cherry Book Review of SartreÕs ÔNauseaÕ Whilst existence rarely causes retching(except, perhaps, when entering theschool changing rooms), many of theprecepts and problems raised by SartreÕs Nausea are eerily relevant to today, particularly in social media. For the first time, barring particularly rigorous diary-keepers, we can effortlessly create a compendium of our existences. No longer is the past Òa propertyownerÕs luxuryÓ; now anyone has access to a free virtual timeline. However, Roquentin, the protagonist, renders such Òcarefully constructed, carefully furnished, and carefully paddedÓ versionsof our histories, as nothing more than acts of self-deceptions, ÒcompensatoryÓ for our secret dissatisfactions with life. Today, there is an active pressure to upload photos of ÒexcitingÓ social lives, like RoquentinÕs girlfriend Anny has Òa dutyÓ to Òtransform privileged situations into perfect moments.Ó For Anny, this extends to deliberately not feeling prickling nettles in order for her first kiss with Roquentin to fulfil her romantic ideals. In the same way, we upload less to show off than to convince ourselves that their life fulfils the standards of ÒfunÓ as set by celebrity culture. So, whilst Roquentin might begin his musings desiring Òthemoments of my life to follow one another in an orderly fashionÓ, as aesthetically pleasing as a well-stocked Instagram profile, by the end he states he can only ÒacceptÓ himself by writing a book. Instead of reductively filtering his life into neat, packaged ÒadventuresÓ, he goes about creating a narrative that involves histrue thoughts rather than semi-mythical reminisces that are valuedon the basis of public satisfaction. Similarly, social media has the potential to leaves us ranking ourselves on our ability to conform to the ÒlikeabilityÓ of ourlives, rather than our own individual thoughts, that consequently lie undeveloped and neglected as we shuttle from one selfie to the next. IÕm also in the process of completing myAdult Leadership Qualificationwhich is something I do byvolunteering at 1st NailsworthRainbows unit each week. Rainbows is the first Girlguiding experience ayoung girl can have. ItÕs for girls aged 5 to 7, and is run by a group of volunteers. We meet every week and do a range of activities. Some of the meetings we have done this term haveincluded a Teddy BearÕs picnic, pancakes, princesses, and bubbles. ItÕs really fun for both the girls and the leaders, and a great way for girls to socialise withother girls who they might not go to school with. We have a broad range of schools that our Rainbows attend, and so they make friends with girls they maynever have met otherwise. The short answer is - unfortunately, no. We do not currently have a great deal of say in what happens inthe world surrounding us. This is an issue I feel very strongly about and haveaddressed in previousarticles, as I believe being an active memberof the local communityentitles you to have a sayin how it is run. A large percentage ofshop assistants, waitingstaff, general helpinghands and many otherweekend (and oftenmany other weekday) job positions are filled byteenagers and young adults in Nailsworth. Although within the town itself we tend to get alot of recognition and respect for our endless efforts to provide service, it would seem that within widersociety we have little acknowledgment for ourcapabilities and talents that could potentially benefitsociety. For this reason, it would seem silly for youngpeople not to grasp the opportunities offered byschools and within their local community to helpthem engage in important issues and decisionmaking. School councils, youth councils and youth clubsare a great way to begin a journey of eye anddoor opening events that could really help teensgain more well-deserved power to offer youthperspectives society needs to hear! youth@nailsworthnews.org.uk an Easter Egg at Christ Church or St. GeorgeÕs this Easter Day and begin yournew life. How do we know? Well the shops are full ofchocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies and chocolate. Did I mention thechocolate? 10% of the chocolate sales in the UK come from Easter related chocolate, and Google tells me that in the UK we will consume 80million Easter Eggs this year! IÕm hoping for one of them É I have to be honest; chocolate is important to me. I love it. Milk orplain, bar or individual. I donÕt really mind how it is presented, I justenjoy it. Lots! And so I am delighted that chocolate forms such animportant part of what is THE most important time of the Christian year. Yes, even more important than Christmas and the chocolate eatenthen. You see Easter is why there is a Christian faith Ð and, frankly, why there are Easter Eggs for us to enjoy. Yes, there is the whole ancient symbolism of new life Ð thatÕs whychicks, and baby rabbits figure so highly, but the new life offered by the Christianfaith is more than a cute baby animal andthe celebration of renewed life after a longwinter. If youÕve ever wanted to start againwith a clean slate, to put it all behind youand become someone different then youREALLY need Easter. You need the storythat it tells and the new life that it offers Ð and you need an Easter Egg. Easter is thetime when we celebrate a new beginning, one which is almost incomprehensible. Aman called Jesus is killed on a Friday andon the Sunday he is more alive than ever Ð he has risen from the dead and his tomb is empty. He is the one who gives us all the chance to start life again Ð and again, andagain and again. One thing those Easter Eggs do is remind us that Jesus gives us thepossibility to start our lives again. The egg is all about the potential ofa new life Ð and it is empty like the tomb. New life needed? Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils had an encounter with some very exotic animals last week when they met a very large tortoise, a python, a bullfrog, a bearded dragon and a tarantula named Hattie. It was very exciting, but the biggest challenge wasnÕt being brave or courageous Ð it was trying to be super quiet so we didnÕt disturb the beautiful animals! During Lent this year, we are organising a Fit & Healthy Challenge for all our children. They will be trying to get at least 9 hours of sleep every night, eat at least 5 pieces of fruitor vegetables each day, drink at least 8 cups of water each day, exercise or play sport for at least an hour every day and be kind and helpful to others and try to talk about theiremotions every day. Following three years of negotiations, fund raising andadministration the deed has been done. Chairman and trustee of BCW is Minchinhampton Parish Councillor Steve Hemmings. He said, ÒBox Wood has been purchased on behalf of the community. It is now ours and will be here for future generations too.Ó Previous attempts in the 1960s and again in 2009, to buythe wood for public enjoyment were unsuccessful, but thenin 2014 its owners the Novalis Trust kindly offered Box Village Society first refusal and gave sufficient opportunity for a public appeal for the funds. Despite a generous donation from MinchinhamptonParish Council, support from Stroud TC and an offer from Gloucester Wildlife Trust to manage the wood once own, there was still an uphill struggle. Cllr. Hemmings added, ÒDespite these generous leg-ups Box Village Society still faced the task of raising well over £100,000. Neverthelessa local appeal for pledges was launched in 2015 and within a few months sufficient pledges had been madeto enable the society to make a firm offer Ð which was accepted. We are planning to hold an event later this year to celebrate the purchase of Box Wood.Ó Five trustees have been appointed to run the new charity. Box Wood appeared on the earliest 1830 Ordnance Survey map. For at least 100 years it was unofficially accessed by the public along numerous paths thought to have beencreated in the early 19th century by local mill workerswalking through to Longfords and Holcombe Mills in theAvening valley. In recent years two additional public footpaths running east-west across Box Wood have been officially recognised, adding to existing public rights of way. Pictured l to r - John Storey (trustee, BCW), Chris Law (chairman, BVS), Cllr Nick Hurst (chairman, Minchinhampton PC), Cllr SteveHemmings (chairman, BCW) and Thomas Pentzek (Novalis TrustÕs trustee, Box CW). This year we intend to include the parish of Horsley and deliver at total of 600. Our aim in to encourage biodiversity through our bee gardens and meadows. The Town Council will be producing an electronic map which will indicate bee lines through out the area - over a number of years we will be able to see where our significant biodiverse areas are. £500 has been allocated in the Town Council Environment budget to pay for the certificates, we have also applied for a small grant from ÔNaturesaveÕ, and if this is successful it will pay for ongoing research and for the certificates. Without insects our native vegetation would not get fertilised and we would not be able to feed ourselves. Vegetables and fruit are reliant on pollinators to produce our food. The most important bees for fertilisation are the solitary bumble bees and garden bees. Residents can help by planting small borders, making bee hotels, planting pots, garden flowers and trees. Wild grassy areas are just as important as flowers, The Donkey Sanctuary seeded a whole meadow last year for grasses and flowers, and there were some good examples of long grass and wild flowers in Bunting Way. There is a plant list available which indicates the most attractive plants for insects. Gardeners should also avoid using pesticides, keep plastics and rubbish away from plants, and maintain fresh supplies of water - insects do drink ! If you have surplus plants - Bee friendly plant swops can take place outside the Town Information centre Friday and Saturday mornings throughout May and June. Residents in Shortwood and Watledge have also taken ownership of community telephone boxes, perhaps these might be considered for use as venues for plant swops? Posting certificates through letter boxes is a delightful activity, it is a good way to get to know our neighbours, hamlets and footpaths, especially on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Last year volunteer posties had lovely conversations with gardeners who were pleased to receive the certificates and share their planting stories. If you would like to assist in 2017 please contact the Clerk or Deputy Clerk at Nailsworth Town Council - 833592 clerk@nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.uk with your name and contact details and a member of the Town Council Environment Committee - Sally Millet, Robert Maitland, Angela Norman or Sue Reed - will contact you Planting in general: 1. Cram in as many different flowers as you can. 2. Aim to have something in flower all the year round. 3. Go for single, simple flower shapes. 4. Never spray plants in flower. 5. Plant in clumps for efficient bee foraging. Nailsworth Archives It now has a microfiche reader (a generous donation) which is available for anyone to use during its normal opening hours of 10-12 Mondays and Fridays. In addition, thanks to the same donor, the Archives have microfiche copies of the Avening parish registers dating back to 1558. You will recall that much of Nailsworth was included in the Avening parish until the 1890s. Transcriptions of these parish registers have been available in the archives for some time, and are well used. Sport Sport ElsieÕs inside view! As you may or may not know, I have been fortunate enough to be myschoolÕs ambassador for Forest Green Rovers, but not many peopleunderstand what actually goes on behind the scenes of the ambassadorscheme itself. So I spoke to Phil Butterworth who is in charge of it all and asked him a few questions. Why did you want to start theambassador scheme? To build the community and raise the profile of the club. When and how did the ambassador scheme begin? The ambassador scheme has been running for around 5 yearsand started from taking playersinto local schools. Every timethe players came to visit, thechildren got excited, and thatÕs when the idea of the ambassador scheme came up. In the first year of running the scheme therewere only 8 people doing it and they were mainly all boys from Primaryschools. What were your hopes for the scheme? The main thing was that the children enjoy it and that they were proudto wear the Forest Green Rovers shirt. By wearing the shirt more often, it will hopefully lead more people to come and watch FGR play andsupport the club. It also has got a lot more families coming to spendtheir afternoon at the club which helps build the community. Another hope for the scheme would be that under 11s would go free to get moreyouth involved with FGR and quite importantly we hoped it would grow. Are you happy with how the ambassador scheme is growing? Yes, the ambassador scheme has grown a lot in size; the first year we ran it, it had 8 people; now we have around 65 ambassadors promotingthe club which helps to spread the word quicker about Forest Green. Is there anything you would change about the ambassador scheme? At the end of the season we usually give the ambassadorÕs a review to fill in but we are hoping to change that, so next season the ambassadors will earn badges instead. And we are trying to get ambassadors somesessions with the players. WhatÕs the best part about the ambassador scheme? Probably seeing young people enjoying the football. WhatÕs your least favourite thing about it? Writing out lots of things; lots of paperwork, but weÕre trying to do themajority online and get more people onto the FGR forum; - this keepseverybody updated about the club, reports, and the publicity we aregetting as a club. How would you describe the ambassador scheme in one word? Exciting! From talking to Phil I learnt a lot about what goes on behind the ambassador scheme and I hope you have also learnt a few things. FGR is a great club and IÕm glad to be a part of it! Shortwood United seems to be experiencing a rocky path still. Consistencyremains the name of the game and afighting Ôdo or dieÕspirit is neededfrom start to finish! The tremendous victory over high- flyers Tiverton gave renewedhope for a positiveend to the season. Then, defeat to Taunton was no upset (they are a strong, powerful team) andShortwood did really well to hold them until thelatter stages of the game. The sign were therefor a resurgence to the season and the recentaway victory at Wimborne may prove just thatpoint. ShortwoodÕs away days appear to have beenfar more lucrative than home games. Twice as many away wins as home - funny old game isfootball but at least the home crowd continues to see good play in flashes. The flowing, passingfootball of yesteryear is now just a memory. A different style - a different approach, whoknows just yet or is it more kick and hope inorder to relieve defensive frailties. Barring the miracle of all mirackes, Shortwood will not be anywhere near theplay-offs this term. Is there a case for bloodingin the youngerplayers on a morepermanent level? Marks, Mendes and Freeman are just thecore of a talented young bunchcoming through theranks. They have allhad extended runs and given chances toexcel, and on manyoccasions they havenot let anyone down. With Morford now back in form with powerfulperformances, he is just the player to teach andguide the young guns for a real crack of thewhip next season. Most of our players herald fromNailsworth and the surroundingvillages and we are always onthe lookout for new members, especially teenagers, as our coreplayers are now well into theirthirties and forties, a smattering of fifty-somethings and even a few of pensionable age! We do not play league cricket in the summer months, choosing instead to play good old-fashioned Sundayand midweek friendlies Ð in other words, traditional village cricket. We go on a long weekendÕs fun-packed tour at the end of May, usually to a scenic area within a few hourÕs drive although in 2013 a highly entertaining and successful tour to the Dordogne was enjoyed, where we discovered thatthe French rain is just as wet as our own! The highlight of our season is always our wonderful fund raising EightsTournament which will take place on Sunday 20th August this year. The event involves Commoners and three invited teams of just six playersbattling it out for a whole day, but with exciting rule changes and run bonus ÔgatesÕ to aim for. The resting players and watching crowd can enjoy the spectacle from the boundary whilst makingthe most of the high quality refreshments available all daywhich includes locally produces meat and drinks. Local indoor nets started on 27th March in readiness for the first home game of the season on 30th April. If you would like to join our wonderful, friendly club, formore details visit - www.commonerscricket.co.uk We look forward to hearing from you! Face in the Crowd. Is this you? If so, you qualify for a freeground pass to FGRÕs next Home match. Just call in at the Club Office with a copy of this paper. (Brought to you by NN inassociation with FGRFC) Forest Green Rovers has shaken off its patchy spell of a few weeks ago, put to bed the very below par performance vDagenham and is now racing towards the endof the season with some style. The defence has tightenedup againand the goals areflowingat the other end. Doidge appears to be able to do no wrongjust now and his performances in attack arepaying off for all around him. His sublime lobbed goal from an angle v Wrexham was just one example of a player on form. At long last, the ball is moving forward muchmore quickly and with more direction thanin previous months. I wonder if the Managerhas taken note of these columns these last months?! Having far less of a slow build-upand square passing, and even passing theball yards backwards when the players haveeventually created an attacking position hasnot been to the crowdÕs liking. With just a handful of games left, FGR now sits at the top of the pile, but every game isnow a cup final. There can be no comments of Òwe were under-par today and we didnÕt show enoughinterestÓ. If the players really want tobe winners, everyoneneeds to be on top oftheir game and whoknows what mayhappen. The manager congratulated thecrowd recently forits support - yes, we will be vocal and verysupportive if the play and players justify it. Recently, the play has justified the noise and support. Now we need to fill the stadium - over 2000 v Wrexham, there is still a 1000 places to fill and then the players will knowwhat noise we can create!
