APRIL 2018 NO. 180 A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www.nailsworth news.org.uk Something to make a note of... This month, the NN features two new musical experiences. Music plays a huge part in each and everyoneÕs lives - we listen to it at home, in the car, in shops and sometimes at work, but there is a link to the work with people suffering neurological disorders and strokes. Sanctuary Music has opened and is reviving the use of vinyl records; who remembers the old juke box (pictured)? There is one in full working order in their new shop (see article) and with thousands of titles on vinyl available to purchase, it is a trip down memory for many and a new and popular experience for the younger ones of us! With a large Ôofficial openingÕ on 21 April, with plenty of exciting things happening, it looks a great place to be! Neu Voices is a new choir for those recovering from strokes and other neurological difficulties and is already a huge success. The Centre Spread this month looks in more depth about the power of music and how this new choir is of enormous benefit to many. The quality of sound from the twenty or so singers is quite wonderful, but they have room for many more choir members! By the way, we have not misspelt the name; the ÒneuÓ is for Òneurological! With ÔThe Piano Shop StroudÕ now open (details in May), it is clear that all genres of music and singing are as popular as ever in town, and with Open Mics, the Bristol Ensemble and local choirs around every corner, the town has much to sing about! Important information for hearing aid users In our March issue, on page 10, we provided information about help with hearing aids at the PriceÕs Mill surgery, and said that no appointment was necessary. We now understand from the Gloucestershire Deaf Association that this was not correct, and it is necessary to book an appointment at the surgery. In this issueÉ There is lots of interesting stuff in this issue - here are some of the highlights: Car Parking charges in Nailsworth This is an important issue for Nailsworth, so read this and make your views known Page 4 Nailsworth Sign Auction: The Mayor is auctioning a Nailsworth sign. The MUGA (Multiple Use Games Area) On the 8th March we held an Extraordinary Meeting of Council to discuss how the Section 106 (planning gain) money from the New Lawn and Redrow Homes should be spent. If youÕd like to see the background papers, they are on the NTC website. These papers show the long and fairly tortuous process of this project, but the result of the meeting brings what we hope is a Win- Win. With the collapse of our chosen contractor and the remaining contractor quoting significantly over budget, there was a simple choice: either all the money (and more) went for a MUGA on the school grounds or for a community park on Myles Marling. Defi brillator update Just under £1,800 has been pledged so far and we are looking to see where it might be located within easy reach of Nortonwood and Forest Green. We still need to raise the final few hundred pounds. Contact: Norman Kay - normankay@hotmail.co.uk Council was split down the middle on this so the Clerk and I had a meeting with the school in February, at which a joint solution was mooted: the money to be split across two projects with a lower specification MUGA on the school grounds and the remainder to be put towards a community park at Myles Marling. Council decided unanimously to accept this new solution and we are now working hard to complete both these projects Parking Charges Elsewhere in the paper is news from the Chamber of Trade about the threat of parking charges. Steve Robinson has said that after listening to the town he is now against charges, which is great. It means we are all fighting this together. The threat of charges is desperately serious for our town - our economy and community is at risk - please make your opinion about this issue known. You can find out more at www.lovenailsworth.com Jonathan Duckworth LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW! Whilst welcomed by many children, the recent snow and freeze caused inconvenience to others - such is life! But there were many who came to the rescue: Lewis (pictured) who voluntarily shoveled snow off the paths in the centre of town; the lady in Forest Green who collected medicine from the pharmacy for her elderly neighbour and even the kind 4x4 driver who pulled our MayorÕs car out of a snowdrift. Nailsworth Town Council and Nailsworth Chamber of Trade and Commerce have joined forces to resist proposals by Stroud District Council to introduce car parking charges in our town. Although results of the review currently being undertaken by the council wonÕt be known for a month, weÕve decided to rally support and gather information to resist charges. We know SDC wishes to raise £150,000 per annum across the District by introducing charges in Nailsworth, Wotton-Under-Edge, Dursley and Berkley etc. Nailsworth is a unique place, offering independent shopping with few high street brands. These independent businesses contribute to the local economy and NailsworthÕs success. Many businesses are on a financial knife edge; theyÕve been affected by the last bank closing, on-line shopping and the economy etc. The introduction of parking charges could be the last straw for many familiar outlets and closing shops make the town less attractive, perhaps encouraging a downward spiral. Do we want Nailsworth to become a ghost town? Obviously not, so we need to resist this with all our might. At a meeting held at the Town Hall on 13th March, attended by many residents and shop owners, useful suggestions and comments were made, and these will fuel our resistance. Both businesses and residents will be affected as itÕs expected that on-street parking charges or permits will be considered; problematic to residents with no alternative but to park outside their homes. We plan to have another event soon, when residents can enforce their views and collect campaign car and window stickers. We will also gather more signatures on our petition. In the meantime, please lobby, by emailing each of the main party leaders in the SDC: show how much you value your town and voice objections. The Conservatives are likely to vote against the proposals. Follow this link for Leaders email addresses on the SDC website. You can find the link on our website: www.stroud.gov.uk/council-anddemocracy/ your-councillors/leader-ofthe- council-and-group-leaders Finally, weÕve set up a website www.lovenailsworth.com (the address is also on all the ÔPÕ window stickers displayed in town) with a link to our petition. This is the only official website associated with the Nailsworth Chamber action group, so to access accurate information about this campaign, please use only this site. After the campaign, www.lovenailsworth.com will be used by the Chamber to promote all that is great about Nailsworth. It seems weÕve waited ages for warmer days to come. As the new welcome light of spring softens and fades our memories of the freak snow, rain and bitterly cold winds and as we see the fresh bright green of new growth, we are filled with the expectation of a great summer to come. You can tell I am not a fan of winter! With daffodils already in bloom, we have passed from the days of winter and Lent, through Holy Week and on out into the glorious celebration of Easter Day and spring; both bringing bright promise of hope and better things to come. When Jesus rose from the dark tomb, there were many who wouldnÕt and couldnÕt believe. One of these human stories is the lovely little story of Thomas, a disciple of Jesus, who just couldnÕt believe until he had seen proof. He had to touch for himself the wounds of Jesus before he could begin to believe that Jesus was alive. Jesus made it clear to Thomas that such proof was a privilege, but Thomas did get to reach out his hand to touch. Because he was so overwhelmed by this experience, he was one of the first to rush out into the streets to tell others the good news that there was a Saviour. He was risen and he was alive. If you wish also to discover a fuller, more secure way of being like Thomas, reach out your hand to God just as he did. Every Blessing. Nailsworth in Bloom was formed to bring together everyone with an interest in maintaining our green spaces, gardens, troughs and hanging baskets and with this in mind we have been looking into entering RHS Britain in Bloom. This is a serious competition at the highest level: town against town and village against village. At lower levels, itÕs a friendly way to draw together people of all ages and walks of life to celebrate their neighbourhood, without that added element of rivalry. Starting at Bronze, awards are given for creative and inspiring horticultural activities, environmental responsibility and community participation, with the opportunity to move up through the grades in subsequent years. Here in Nailsworth weÕre already doing so many relevant things, such as the troughs and borders around the town centre, community orchards, school gardens and the Bee Garden scheme. Linking all these activities together in our Nailsworth in Bloom portfolio, the overall image would become much clearer and have more impact, so the group has decided to give it a go this year! The Britain in Bloom year started in September 2017 and runs until the Judges visit; for us, July 11th. Everyone weÕve contacted has agreed to be included under our Nailsworth in Bloom umbrella and there is so much more going on in town than we know about. If youÕre involved in any scheme like allotments, childrenÕs play areas or neighbourhood plots, we would love to hear from you. It is all based Mind over Matter on his experience in his last work selling fitness products, and he saw a niche that needed to be filled. ÒPeople from 16 - 24 years old are often a bit lost about various aspects of life: they have personal challenges, mental health issues, anxiety and depression, relationship issues and worries about careers and so on,Ó says Luke. With his own experiences and with firm qualifications behind him, he has become a bit of a sensation in helping others where he can. He has mentors around the country (and the world!) to assist in various localities and he has found that people need help in all sorts of ways. Help is based through questions and thought provoking situations and relying on the client giving the answers. Best4Ben Fund- Raising Update Last month we reported on the magnificent efforts of Carl Benton, and his staff from Personal Best Fitness Studio. They took over Wild Garlic for a night for a Pop-Up Bistro to raise money for the Best4Ben local fund raising campaign. Carl did the cooking and his staff served the food, and did the washing up. We are very pleased to report that the event raised about £1,000 for the fund raising, and about 40 people had a really good meal. Both practitioners are highly qualied and State Registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council). Since qualifying as a music therapist, Jane has worked extensively with a wide range of clients from children with special needs in school settings to elderly people in care homes. In 2006, working with a retired GP, Jane set up Mindsong, oering music therapy and singing groups in care homes, to bring music to Dementia suerers. Jane reects upon her work: ÒMany re-found old skills Ð just using the instruments or using their voices again to sing. ey began to talk to each other, to reminisce about their musical experiences. Importantly, music can reach and touch or move us deeply. It can go where words cannot.Ó Mindsong now has a number of music therapists working across the county and over 100 singing group volunteers. Our thanks go to Harriet West, photographer and Mindsong for images used in this article. Music therapy draws upon the innate qualities of music to support people of all ages; from helping new-born babies develop healthy bonds with parents, to oering vital, sensitive and compassionate palliative care at the end of life. Central to how music therapy works is the therapeutic relationship established through engagement in live musical interaction and play between therapist and client. Using a wide range of musical styles and instruments, including the voice, the music, oen improvised, allows clients to create their own unique musical language in which to explore and connect with the world and express themselves. Children with Autism can develop emotional, social and communication skills; brain injury patients can be helped to regain speech and older people, frightened by the isolation and confusion of Dementia, can reconnect with memories: all through the medium of music therapy. In the March issue of Nailsworth News, willing volunteers, to help with walks for people with Dementia in our town, were asked to contact Chris Moore at Fair Shares on 01453 706556 or Marilyn Miles on 0780 1558931.e walks, planned in the spring along Ruskin Mill ponds, are just one example of our townÕs care for its community. In this issue, a Dementia awareness event, in conjunction with a wildlife rescue centre, is promoted on page 11; just two examples of Dementia friendly Nailsworth. Now, semi-retired, Jane continues working with clients and together with Rachel has set up Neu Voices choir. Both therapists were aware of how little provision was made for stroke and aphasia suerers: together, with their implicit understanding of the benets of music, and in particular singing, for people experiencing neurological diculties, they have given a voice to people in the Cotswolds living with neurological conditions. Neu Voices Choir, run through the Guideposts Trust, is the rst of its kind in the county and aims to bring together people with conditions such as ParkinsonÕs disease, aphasia and MS, or people who are recovering from a brain injury or stroke and their families, friends and carers. Research has shown that people living with conditions like aphasia can really benet from singing, which can help improve speech and communication. Aphasia suerers lose the power of speech or understanding but are still able to sing and respond to music. Neu Voices aims to encourage and develop words and speech through the use of song and oers opportunities for singing together regardless of ability. It also gives members the chance to meet others experiencing similar diculties in their lives. e choir meets fortnightly on ursdays at e Hub, Tobacconist Road, Minchinhampton. Singing starts at 2pm and nishes at 3.30pm with a break for tea and cakes. Members come from all over the Cotswolds including Gloucester, Cheltenham, Wotton, Cam & Dursley, Stroud, Nailsworth and Minchinhampton and are aged 19 - 80+ years. ItÕs a place for people to sing together, make new friends, build condence, share music and support areas of physical health and well-being. Anyone living with such a condition is welcome to attend, as are their family and friends. Singing for the summer term will start on 12th April and nish on 19th July. A suggested donation of £5 per person is welcomed and the rst session is free. Some of the children had only been playing hockey for a couple of weeks so there was excitement and nervousness at the start, but confidence grew as the tournament progressed. Hornets finished a respectable 3rd in their group with 2 wins and 2 losses. Hawks went undefeated despite a tense semi-final golden goal win and an even more tense final. They showed great perseverance and tenacity to come back from 0-2 behind to win 3-2 in the dying seconds to become District Champions for the second year running! Our children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and a good sense of fair play throughout the tournament with handshakes all round at the end. Despite the imminent arrival of Ôthe beast from the eastÕ, we were still able to mark World Book Day. Staff and pupils dressed as book characters from Mary Poppins to Darth Vader. The children enjoyed story readings from staff and two intrepid parents who braved the weather. Each child donated £1 to come to school dressed as their favourite book character and the money raised will be used to purchase books for each class. It was a fantastic morning and we were delighted that the weather didnÕt spoil our enjoyment, even though we had to close the school at lunchtime. Gary Price, Headteacher / www.horsley.gloucs.sch.co.uk Otters in the Inchbrook When the Woodchester Valley Village was built in 2002, on the brownfield site of a former mill, a wildlife corridor was preserved. This corridor links the National TrustÕs Woodchester Park to the Nailsworth river valley and includes part of the Inchbrook stream. Hopes were raised that otters would use this stream to reach the fish in the ParkÕs lakes and now, at last, evidence of otters has been found. The village is now run in the mutual interests of the residents and one of those interests is the environment of the village itself and encouraging wildlife. Recently an enthusiast from the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust visited and found otter poo (spraints) with a distinctly fishy smell on rocks in the Inchbrook Stream on the edge of Nailsworth. The residents, avid readers of Nailsworth News, would be interested to hear of otters detected in other parts of Nailsworth. Over recent years many birds have been seen as well as other wildlife including orchids and glow worms. Plans are being drawn up to protect the wildlife and encourage more. SCHOOL S SCHOOLS Beaudesert Park School news The older children at Beaudesert recently enjoyed a sneak peek into what the future might hold during a special ÔWorld of WorkÕ day. Children in Year 7 laid on entertainment for a smaller, but no less appreciative audience when they spent time with residents of Steppes care home. The annual trip to Steppes is a popular part of the Year 7 PSHE programme. As well as reciting poems and prose, the children chatted and swapped life stories with residents Ð one of whom had worked at Beaudesert. Activities of younger children in school included making (and devouring) pizzas to help with fractions, and creating wonderful portraits of their mothers in special Mothering Sunday themed art sessions. www.beaudesert.gloucs.sch.uk The Nailsworth Archives is putting on an exhibition for the Nailsworth Festival in the Mortimer Rooms, about Education in Nailsworth. The latter was in support of ChildrenÕs Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF), a charity close to the heart of one of our families. However, two weeks later both events were held, and the children came in as a character from a book, or dressed in yellow, or even both at the same time! We also had a second hand book sale, and all proceeds went to CLDF. The onset of spring has seen the children enjoying a wealth of different learning activities, including setting up their own Museum! Our ÔOne Night at the MuseumÕ theme gave many opportunities for the children to explore the natural sciences, Egyptians and Roman history, visit Bristol Museum, providing inspiration for their own school Museum, open on the last day of term, when parents and friends of the school were welcomed. The children also learned calligraphy skills from the past. Promotion of Cursive Writing from Reception upwards has seen significant improvements in childrenÕs handwriting. KS2 welcomed Mrs Betty Foxton, who shared her calligraphy skills with the children. Mrs Jacqui Sollars, headteacher, said, ÒIt was fantastic to build parish and school links, using the many skills that exist within our community to inspire the children even further. They really appreciated how difficult it is and the concentration and accuracy required to produce a good result.Ó The schoolÕs PTA is getting ready for the annual Duck Race at the Nailsworth Festival in May. (Sports Ambassador for FGR) Throughout the season Forest Green Rovers have had their share of ups and downs: a rocky start to the season, then developing to move up the league to where they are now. At the beginning of the season, we were still excited by our promotion and I think that distracted us from our play. Things werenÕt going quite to plan. We were given the toughest teams fi rst, werenÕt winning many matches and positioned in the bottom 2. However, as we started to play slightly easier teams we managed to get a few points back and crawled out of the relegation zone. Then we hovered around the relegation zone for too long, people were getting a little annoyed and pressure began to show on the team, with an adverse effect on their playing. I think itÕs fair to say that getting promoted isnÕt all winning and happiness. ItÕs also hard work and perhaps a bit of failure and thatÕs expected from all teams. It would be great if you could win every match but highly unlikely! In the beginning of 2018 we lost many players: either they were sold or were on loan and returned to their original club. New signings came in and it looked like a completely different team. I was excited to see if play improved. It took them a couple of games to settle in and to get used to playing together, but soon you could see the difference in their performance. After a while, we were winning more matches, closing the gap between us and other teams and decreasing our -20 something goal difference. We were unbeaten in 5 games during February/early March which led to Mark Cooper being nominated for manager of the month. We fi nally got out of the relegation zone and have now climbed our way up the table putting quite a few teams between us and our old position, which we hopefully wonÕt return to! With everyoneÕs support over the remaining games, letÕs hope the Rovers can keep up the positive play and remain where they rightly belong! Come on you Rovers! We donÕt have enough snow to have a curling club, but the next best thing is bowls at Nailsworth Mills Bowls Bowling Club and it is usually far warmer too! Instead of throwing stones down the ice, you can throw woods instead (a technical bowling term). Give it a go with taster sessions and relax with a drink or two in the bar afterwards. Taster sessions recommence on Friday evening 27 April (6.15pm Ð 8.45pm) when the Green is open for the summer season. Coaching is always given Ð bring fl at shoes. With a large backlog of games to fill, it is going to be a very busy end to the season. Please check on www.pitchero.com/clubs/ shortwoodunited on a daily basis to see when matches are re-scheduled etc. The recent demolition by Bideford completely reflected that football is definitely a game of two halves! It could so easily have been 4 - 1 to Shortwood in the first half but against the sub-zero gale and snow in the second half, the team couldnÕt mount any attack, defended deeper and deeper and the more physical and creative Bideford tore Shortwood to shreds. At least the team carried on and heads never dropped, and they tried to carry out their game-play - a real credit to the players who were obviously a little shell-shocked. This team spirit will be vital as the season comes to an end - there is certainly enough talent still available to finish on a very positive note. Shortwood has a history of creating great goalkeepers Ð Harry Pickering has been brilliant all season - without him, the team would be in real trouble. Attendances appear to be a little low just now, but larger crowds supporting the team create an atmosphere and this rubs off on the players. There are always goals galore - give Shortwood a try if you havenÕt been before! SPORTS Phoenix Gold in the Stroud League U18Õs Final Who would have thought that when two nine year olds started playing table tennis at Phoenix Table Tennis Club, five years later they would be playing each other at the same venue for the honour of being the best Under 18 player in the Stroud League. ThatÕs what happened on Saturday March 10th when good friends and teammates Sam McIvor and Jon Ramsbotham played each other. Both are local lads living within walking distance of the club at (Nailsworth Subscription Rooms). On the day, Jon just had the measure of Sam, winning the first game 11-9. Sam fought back to match JonÕs score to win the second game 11-9, but Jon composed himself and again edged the third game 11-9. With Sam tiring after being unwell all week, Jon got some breaks and applied the pressure to win the final game 11-4 to win 3-1 overall. Thanks to Nick Watts who umpired the tense match, played in good spirit and watched by an appreciative audience. Photograph: L-R - Jon Rowbotham, Sam McIver
