MAY 2018 NO. 181 A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www.nailsworth news.org.uk Spring is now defi nitely here and the NN has articles about things to do in the warmer days ahead - a picnic in Horsley perhaps or follow some floral ideas from the Churches. Brutons has tips on fertilisers, the Flower Arrangement Society is blooming again and donÕt forget the Nailsworth in Bloom campaign! The Buildings of Nailsworth Ð New & Old The NewÉ The month of April 2018 will go down in history as the month when a new venture in public housing started in reality. The Mayor cut the first turf before the new Community Land Trust starts building houses and flats for affordable rents, and will never be sold. This is a major first step in dealing with the Housing Crisis, and it has been Nailsworth Working Together. See page 4 for full report. The OldÉ Ten years ago, the May issue of Nailsworth News did a feature on buildings in Nailsworth Ð a demolished Church, The Jovial Foresters up for sale, and the early days of Crystal Fountain village, along with features on buildings in the area. This month the NN introduces a new Centre Spread theme - ÔBuildings of NailsworthÕ. The first article is about Stokescroft in Cossack Square and we hope that it is of interest and will encourage us all to look up and above the shop windows, to see some of the amazing architecture we have in our town. Myles has worked very hard for the town, as councillor, then as Deputy Mayor and Mayor. He has worked on significant building projects, such as the take-over of the old police station, Town Hall improvements, together with long term major projects like the Civic Centre Project. If there is a call for an election from ten electors the position may be filled by vote, otherwise Council will take steps to co-opt a new councillor. By the time NN hits the streets we will know if an election is to be held. Vacancy - Admin Asst Sue Nicholson, our Administration Assistant is retiring. She and her husband John have been looking to move for a while, and it is finally happening. Too soon, we say, as Sue has been so valuable to Council with her enthusiasm, commitment and helpful attitude. She was also a Stroud District Councillor and John, a long standing Town Councillor and Mayor. We wish them well. This means thereÕs a vacancy in our offices for an Administration Assistant. The closing date is the 8th May, soon after the delivery of this NN edition. A brief advert is below and information about the post is on our website. Car Park Charges - The Threat We have been told, informally, that the 6 weeks Consultation Period on car park charges will begin on the 16th June. Your Town Council is still very much against this threat to the townÕs economy and will be fighting against what we see as a major threat to our unique and successful town. Jonathan Duckworth Nailsworth Town Meeting The Nailsworth Town Meeting will have taken place by the time this issue of Nailsworth News is published. However, the date of the meeting was too close to our printing deadline for us to produce a report which would do justice to this important event. For the second year running the NTC has tried a new, more inclusive format. We have therefore decided that we will publish a report in our June issue, which will concentrate on recording the accomplishments of the people receiving Town Awards, but also try to comment on whether this new format is a success. With that in mind we would appreciate feedback on the meeting. Please send any comments you have to our Editorial Team. Q. What would it cost to... Clear garden? A trip to the tip? Level an area? On Thursday, April 5th, the CLT Board was joined by members of Nailsworth Town Council, Housing Association the Aster Group, builders EG Carter, SDC officers and councillors, to officially mark the handover and start of the work. The site, on the former SDC garage site at the lower end of Lawnside, will be a development of 6 flats and 4 houses, owned by the Community Land Trust for ever, to be let at an affordable rent to those registered with Gloucestershire Homeseekers. Preference will be given to those on the list with a Nailsworth connection. The CLT expects Severn Trent to be on site first for drainage work and local builders E.G.Carter aim to start construction in June: completion is expected early next year. Anyone interested in renting one of the new homes should ensure they are registered with Gloucestershire Homeseekers. I said it was important to care for the spaces around us because when our environment is cared for, we feel better about where we live, and better about ourselves. That still seems very apt this year especially as Nailsworth has entered Britain in Bloom! I wonder how are your gardens or windowsills looking? Loved and cared for, or a little tired? How about you? Most of us, at some time, feel a little tired and overwhelmed, and for some of us we may feel completely swamped and weighed down by worry. Our gardens may help, or they may add to the worry Ð when will we ever have the time or skill to make them beautiful? As with all things, we have a choice: to worry or to find a way of putting down the load and enjoying the sights and sounds of the beautiful spaces around us. Jesus told his followers that the flowers in the fields and the birds in the sky are beautiful and precious to God, but that we are even more precious. He also said that if we were weighed down with worry then we could give it to him Ð a bit like someone taking the heavy wheelbarrow full of weeds and pushing it for us. As the days lengthen and our gardens, windowsills and public spaces grow more beautiful, perhaps it is time to find a quiet space in the middle of that beauty. Why not stop and look carefully at the flowers. They are incredible. Take a moment to shut your eyes and listen to the birds. What amazing sounds they make for such small creatures and just perhaps, wonder at the fact that there is a God who believes that we are more precious than these amazing things Ð we might even whisper a quiet Ôthank-youÕ. If thereÕs one thing guaranteed to confuse most novice (and many seasoned) gardeners, itÕs fertiliser! We all know what itÕs for, but the huge variety of products on the market can so often be confusing and a little daunting. With spring upon us and the growing season in full swing, now is a good time to pop along to Brutons Home Hardware here in town where youÕre guaranteed loads of friendly advice and a great range of products to help your garden look bloominÕ wonderful this summer. In order to thrive, most plants need three major nutrients - nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Nitrogen promotes leaf growth, phosphorous for the roots, and potassium for flowers and fruits. The ratio of these elements contained in different fertilisers is an indication of their intended use. To maintain healthy growth, plants also need some additional nutrients such as calcium, sulphur, magnesium, iron, copper, boron and manganese. Smaller amounts of some/all of these trace elements are found in most good general fertilisers. Different types of plants also take up the goodness from fertilisers in different ways, hence the need for controlled, slow or fast-release products. To ensure you have a bloominÕ good summer and choose the fertilisers most suited to your plant varieties, visit us in store at Brutons for a crop of great tips and friendly advice. 6 Symptomssuitable for Osteopathic treatment: Spinal pain (back & neck),Scia0ca,Limb pain (arms & legs),Frozen shoulder, Spor0ng injuries,Headaches & Migraines, Stress related condi0ons. Too late to take a meaningful part in the survey, we decided to carry out our own Nailsworth survey during the next few months. Reasons for their decline are unknown but it is hoped that surveys of nesting sites will help us to understand why they are suffering. House Martins, similar in shape to swifts, are easily distinguished by their white rump. They nest in the eaves of houses in little half round mud, nests usually occupied from April to September, often producing two or three broods. They then fly to Africa where they spend our winter in warmth and sunshine. Until the national survey results are published we wonÕt know the true picture but a factor may be that Fancy a spring walk for a great cause? Their nesting sometimes results in ugly streaks of bird faeces on outside walls and some householders discourage nesting by hanging strings of lights from the eaves of their houses. Any suggestions on ways to avoid this unwanted marking, whilst still enabling the birds to reproduce successfully, would be very welcome. One year ago Amalfi opened its doors for fine Italian dining in the heart of town at The Cross in Fountain Street. It has become firmly established on the Nailsworth food trail, not only for its authentic home prepared Italian and Sicilian food, but also for the warm and friendly ambience. The business has grown quickly and there is a strong and regular customer base that enjoys the changing menus both for eat-in and takeaway. Whether itÕs pastas, pizza or more bespoke dishes, there is a large and enticing choice for any palette. It is certainly worth a try! The location is perfect for a quiet evening out or a larger party, with a spacious dining area for private parties for up to 30 guests. Make a call and seal a deal! Takeaways are increasingly popular - phone and collect within 20 minutes - simple! Gluten free and vegetarian options are always available, and these have been popular with customers. ÒThree weeks ago I managed to leave my phone on the top of my car as I drove off. It managed to stay put until I reached Horsley (no mean feat given the steep hills between Rockness and Horsley) where it slid off, bounced onto the bonnet of the car following, over their roof, and onto the road. As he saw this object flying past his windscreen, the observant driver realised this was a phone. He stopped his car (inadvertently running said phone over) and retrieved it. Thanks to the honesty and determination of CarshaÕs husband and family, my phone and I were re- Nailsworth Stroud Gloucestershire Oliver Mead &Associates GENERAL BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE ¥ Decorating ¥ Woodwork ¥ Tiling ¥ Gutters ¥ Laminate/wood flooring ¥ Windows/doors ¥ Garden landscaping/maintenance ¥ Whole property restoration ¥ Shop fitting & commercial Free no-obligation estimates 07790 883780 united late that Sunday evening; my phone still in perfect working order! Not only do they serve great coffee and cakes, they are a great new addition to the fab cafes we have in Nailsworth. Thank you CarshaÕs Cafe.Ó (anon) olivermeadandassociates@gmail.com www.olivermeadbuilding.co.uk 11 Our town is blessed with many old and beautiful buildings. Take Stokescroft in Cossack Square for example. It is now the home of WSP solicitors but what else do we know about it and what is its history? Stokescroft is a grade II* listed building. It was built in the eighteenth century, probably on the site of an even earlier building. It is a good example of a gabled Cotswold house, built of rubble stone with a Cotswold stone roof. It has a fine studded door, with a glazed panel and a beautiful shell hood on brackets over it. Some of its original mullion windows and oak panelling survive as do the rainwater heads on the gutters. Inside there is the original oak staircase and to the right of the doorway, one of the rooms has the original Cotswold flag flooring and fireplace. Graffiti found in the attic. Thanks to the knowledge and interest of Paul Butler and Sharon Mansell, the NN is able to produce an ad hoc series of centre spreads over the c er the coming months on ÔBuildings of NailsworthÕ looking at their histor y, architecture and the part they played in town. Here is the first of the series. BarracksÕ, so perhaps there is a military connection. In the 1780s Robert and Hannah Norton lived here and an old map reveals a garden to the rear of the building. In the Nineteenth century it seems that it was owned by Adrian Stokes. He was a magistrate and criminals had to be brought before him before they were taken into custody and sent to Horsley jail. Apparently in 1834, a Òblind houseÓ was built adjoining Stokescroft, which was a small windowless prison where the Òdrunk and disorderlyÓ could be temporarily lodged. It would be fascinating to know more about this. I have discovered that there were 21 inns in Nailsworth at the time with 7 in Market Street alone. No wonder that there was so much drunken and disorderly behaviour and a lock up was needed! In 1889 Stokescroft was converted into NailsworthÕs first flats for the elderly Some say that it was used to house Russian prisoners during the Crimean War and hence the naming of Cossack Square but there is no evidence for this. Graffiti found in the attic hints that troops were stationed here between 1812-1815 and it seems that the building was once called ÔThe and retired ladies were still living there in the 1960s. Someone has told me that the building is reputedly haunted by a lady in a white dress, so perhaps she was one of the retired ladies! In the 1970s Stokescroft was restored and there was a grand opening of the building attended by Graham Page, MP and Minister for Local Government and Development. A.E. Smith solicitors worked in this building and were still there in 1978. This fir m is connected to the William Smith, Òpeacemaker and honest lawyerÓ who did so much to provide pure drinking water for Nailsworth in the nineteenth century. Here my investigations end. I hope to discover more but if anyone has anything else to add please get in touch. The business has just been crowned national winners at the Great British Care awards in the ÔHome Care TeamÕ category. Having won the South West regional final in October 2017, the team attended a gala award ceremony at the Birmingham ICC in March. Attended by over 900 individuals across the UK, the awards celebrate the very best in the health and social care sector and reward those who have demonstrated outstanding excellence. The judges said, ÒThis unique team provide both innovation and creative matching of individuals to ensure people can live independently at home. Their passion and commitment to quality recruitment globally, and also their support to staff development, made them the winning team.Ó The Corinium Care team is both thrilled and honoured to have scooped the category top spot. Business Manager, Getta Sutton said, ÒI am so incredibly proud of the whole team. This accolade recognises the professionalism and dedication of the office staff and carers alike who work tremendously hard together to provide the very best care and support to our clients across the UK.Ó Info: 01453 839290 / e: mail@coriniumcare.com / www.coriniumcare.com Are you happy? Average happiness in Nailsworth is 84%, as calculated by local sustainability consultant Richard Lupo. The measure combines survey data on how people feel about themselves as well as hard data such as crime statistics. Importantly, it includes environmental data which relates to our food security, air quality, flood risk and water sources. The data is combined into a single figure based on the science of satisfying our human needs. Examples give a flavour of the data: Leisure time - Data for the South West area, nearest available for Nailsworth, shows that only 46% of people were Òcompletely or mostlyÓ satisfied with the time they have for leisure pursuits. This means most of us crave more leisure time. Food security - UK food security scores 77 out of 100 according to international figures. A big chunk of why we and our children do not have 100% food security is down to unsustainable energy use. Figures also show that there is generally low esteem (36%). On the plus side, domestic water efficiency is pretty good (99%). However, there is massive room for improvement in reducing carbon emissions which are around 3 times sustainable levels. Richard Lupo will produce these figures every quarter, hoping more people will take an interest and make improvements. Eventually he hopes it will lead to 100% happiness in Nailsworth. He is taking a year off to pursue his footballing goals (no pun intended) before he reads History at Southampton next year. Harry is asking for your help and the Club is more than happy to support him. He says, ÒIn May 2018, I am climbing Pen y Fan on crutches. It is the highest mountain in southern Britain, at 886 metres. I am raising money for the England Amputee Football Association, a charity which gives amputees an opportunity to play for one of seven current clubs in England, as well as (potentially) the National side. At the moment I am in the provisional England squad of eighteen players, soon to be made thirteen, but there is a chance for those left out to represent the Development squad this year. The funds are needed for flights, accommodation and everything else which is usually paid for by a governing body. The England team will be participating in friendlies against Ireland, the USA and Haiti in Houston, as well as the Ampfutbol Cup in Poland in September and the World Cup in Mexico in October and November. The Development squad will play friendlies against Scotland and travel to Athens to play Greece. I need the funds by the end of May, whichever squad I am selected for. This has been a difficult decision taken in the most difficult of circumstances but constant financial demands to improve facilities have recently been further compounded by loss of a major sponsor from the end of this season. This will leave the Club in a vulnerable financial position should we attempt to continue competing at Southern League level. In light of this SU FCÕs Committee consider it prudent to seek football at a lower and more localized level where operating costs and demands for facility improvements will be moderated. We are unaware which league we will be playing in next season, and await the FAÕs advice on this, but we hope to compete at a level equivalent to that of the Hellenic or Western League. Shortwood United will not run a second team for the season 2018/2019 but use the time to properly organise a development youth squad in readiness for the following season.Ó The team has had a long and difficult year, but much has been learnt along the way. In recent matches there have hardly been eleven players available, but a team has gone out to battle and done their bit! SaturdayÕs victory v Larkhall was just one example of where fighting with the bare bones showed the tenacity of the team. The Club will survive and be as successful as ever and if the present crop of players can remain, to be the bedrock of a new team for next season, then all will be well. Experts in Selling & Letting Property T: 01453 833366 E: nailsworth@parkersproperties.co.uk www.parkersproperties.co.uk Parent and Community Support Ser vice Nailsworth ChildrenÕs Centre, part of Hill Valley and Vale ChildrenÕs centre, was handed back to the community following its loss of tender to BarnardoÕs in the 2017 restructure. Town Council looked at continuing provision of support for families with pre-school children in Nailsworth and working with Home Start, local groups and councillors, a report was submitted to the Town Council with cost implications and suggestions for implementation. The first challenge was to identify and address shortfalls in provision and choose, from several locations, where childrenÕs activities should take place. The working group felt provision was needed at the top of Forest Green and that Home Start should be lead provider of twice weekly Stay and Play sessions and additional parenting sessions and Forest Green Family Fun was conceived. Home- Start has operated in Nailsworth and Forest Green since 2001 and over time has developed knowledge and understanding of community needs. The Family Fun sessions, which included a clothes/toy swap have been well attended and below are a few comments from users: ÒI like the welcoming feeling when you join the group.Ó ÒI like the lovely staff and the healthy snacks.Ó Phone lines open until 10pm 01453 836186 The Old Stamp Office, www.milesmorgantravel.co.uk George Street GL6 0AG 23 24 L I T H O ¥ D I G I T A L ¥ L E T T E R P R E S S LEOPARDPRESS LITHO PRINTING GRAPHIC DESIGN BOOK BINDING PRINT FINISHING THE CHICKEN SHACK, SELSLEY COMMON, WOODCHESTER, STROUD GL5 5PW 01453 872123 | STROUD@LEOPARDPRESS.COM ANGELA BROWN HYPNOTHERAPY 07795 547 070 angela@angelabrownhypnotherapy.com Do you experience anxiety, sleep issues, panic attacks, exam nerves, issues around food, anger, confidence, IBS or phobias such as spiders, flying, dentists, the dark? ItÕs made me try new things and experience different situations. I wouldnÕt necessarily be writing for the NN today if I wasnÕt an Ambassador. ItÕs really encouraged me to branch out and go for things that I wouldnÕt normally have done. In the 2016/2017 season I was made Ambassador of the Year, a real honour for me and it meant so much. When you put your mind to do something and work hard to achieve it you realise that you can do a lot more than you think. Helping out the club and promoting it is the main purpose of being an Ambassador and this season we were given a list of things to do which if accomplished would earn a badge. Being an Ambassador doesnÕt mean you have to stick to one way of promoting the club; the sheet that we were given allows you to experiment with different processes, ideas, outcomes. For example, last season I focused on my writing/ reporting, mainly as a way of keeping an FGR notice board up to date. But this season IÕve carried on with my reporting and managed to be a part of the cookery evening. IÕve helped out with selling programmes, handed out some awards as well as the vouchers and doing all of this has helped me to grow into the person I am today. ItÕs given me a new found confi dence. Sadly, this will be my last season as an Ambassador as I am moving on to focus on my GCSEÕs next year. I will greatly miss doing the ÔjobÕ as itÕs been such a huge part of my life. Thank you to Phil who began the scheme. It has truly changed my perspective on what itÕs possible to achieve. I canÕt put it into words how great this opportunity was for me and for many other children who are Ambassadors. What I would say is, if you ever get an opportunity to be an Ambassador, take it! You never know where it could take you.It also means that this will be my last report for the NN. Thank you for this opportunity to write for you, IÕve enjoyed every minute. Come on you Rovers! ElsieÕs Inside View! Elsie Swaps FGR for GCSEÕs! For two years Elsie has been a Sports Ambassador for FGR and as such she has written articles for the Nailsworth News. The following article will be her last, as for all the young people who have written for us, life moves on and she must now concentrate on her exams. We, at the NN, would like to thank Elsie for her hard work and for sharing with our readers, her unique perspective on our local football club. The Sports Ambassador scheme run by Phil Butterworth, Vice Chair of FGR, is excellent and we hope that another young person will be encouraged to write for us in the near future.
