On page 5 we feature the story of the Playcircle summer camp, with lots of activities and music making. The Youth Club gave a surprise party in July to celebrate the 50 years Councillor Steve Robinson has been a Youth Worker. Steve is the Chair of the Trustees for the Club, and this has been quite an achievement. See page 6 for the full story. The Nailsworth News always has lots of news about the things that are close to our community and are important. But from time to time we learn about the charitable activities of Nailsworth further afield, which are quite special. Vumilia is a village in Tanzania, which has many local projects, funded by the Nailsworth Vumilia Link. Jo Smith of Nailsworth Vumilia Link visited the village this summer, and we were so impressed with her report that we decided we would do justice to this good cause and make it the subject of our October issue Centre Spread feature. The change was that we replaced one Editor with a team of people, one group doing the writing and another group doing the design and layout. At the same time we changed the look of the paper. Well, we have now fi nished a year with the new team and all looks good. By making these changes we are ensuring the continuation of the Nailsworth News, which we believe is important to the life of our Town. I want to personally thank all the volunteers, who have worked on the paper in the last year, and some long before, for their dedication and hard work to make the paper what it is. There have been some recent changes; we now have a new Advertising Manager, Helen Harding, and we will tell you more about Helen next month. We will also be introducing a new volunteer next month, who will be keeping our Whats On Pages up to date. Last month we appealed for people to report for us, and we will tell readers more about this next month. In the meantime we still urgently need somebody to help us with our Business Reports. Hooray! It was wonderful to see Nailsworth come together fighting. There was the fantastic response from you, The Public, with countless emails to SDC and the turnout at the Public Meeting. Nailsworth Town Council was united from the outset and pledged 20k to fight the proposal. Banners in the town got the message across with a little humour. It was clear that raising money and envy were key factors in trying to impose charges. Neither of these are legal grounds and we would have gone to judicial review. District Councillors were part of the fight; important support from Tom Skinner who put forward the motion to council that started the change. From Nailsworth, although Steve Robinson was initially in favour, he saw early on that charges were not right for, nor wanted, in the town. After initially proposing 2 hours free parking Steve Robinson, Norman Kay and Sue Reed also fully backed the Towns campaign for no charges. The Chamber of Trade were a rock and they assisted NTC in amassing evidence to show the effect charges would have, with Diana Stiles from Buskins. In the end video evidence helped scupper the proposal; video locations - Brutons, K&G Convenience Stores and Butchers Quality Country Meat. Great detective work by Katie Jarvis and others unearthed weaknesses in the process. The SNJ covered the story comprehensively. Kate Kay, Chair of Horsley Parish Council, brokered a meeting between SDC leaders and NTC. A number of SDC Coalition councillors stated they would vote against the proposal, and so it fell. There are many others who gave time and support. What next? We stay alert, banners ready. We will continue questioning the ARUP report and its commissioning - the quality of work from a District Council should be better than this, and Councillors should have properly scrutinised it. A Town Council shouldnt be able to take down a District Council proposal so comprehensively. We now have a great opportunity to show SDC why a vibrant town centre is important to the community, how it should be protected and how we should be respected; not seen as a cash cow. Well done Nailsworth and thank you, and thanks to Nailsworth News! Jonathan Duckworth Nigglesworth Car parked in the evening over the dropped tactile pavement, for wheelchairs and sight impaired residents to cross. This is happening very often in town. From a local resident (name and address supplied LOCA L A F FA I R S LOCAL AFFAIRS SDC Councillors Report Car Parking in Nailsworth After lots of effort by many people and organizations, Stroud District Council has now withdrawn its plans to introduce car parking charges in Nailsworth, Wotton-Under-Edge and Dursley. It was a magnificent combined effort by many people and groups. Our thanks are due specifically to ordinary members of our communities who inundated District Councillors with e-mails and letters. It worked. It made the District Council pause, re-think and now withdraw. Nailsworth Chamber of Trade and Town Council were excellent in preparing, funding and carrying out a well- organized campaign which undermined the arguments in the Council Arup Car Parking Report. The Nailsworth Labour Party branch produced a comprehensive paper which argued that the car parking charging proposals were flawed and not sustainable. And we, as your councillors, have pulled out all the stops in our efforts to achieve this change. One can empathize with Stroud District Council; forced into car parking charges because central government has decimated the grant funding it receives. Substantial staff and service cuts have been made and they are aware of the need to develop sustainable practice for the future health and well-being of our communities. The District will need to budget to maintain our services and after considerable public debate it now knows that it is not acceptable to undermine the viability of our rural Market towns and their independent trade. The next step for SDC is to develop policies that encourage transport by non-car means, which is so destructive to our environment. Well done everybody! Defibrillators With your help we have raised 1736 for the proposed Forest Green device and have handed it to Nailsworth Health Partnership to organise its installation and manage it. Meanwhile 1300 has been collected for the Horsley device. This should have arrived by the time this article appears and hopefully with be installed outside the Primary School before the term starts. You can contact us at cllr.norman.kay@stroud.gov.uk; cllr.Steve.robinson@stroud.gov.uk; cllr.Sue.Reed@stroud.gov.uk A tribute to our Mayor Jonathan Duckworth You will be aware by now that SDCs proposal to introduce parking charges in Nailsworth has been stopped. The town owes a big Thank you to our Mayor for this. Jonathan Duckworth spearheaded the campaign for our town, putting in a lot of effort and sleepless nights to research, attend meetings and present an indisputable case to keep Nailsworths parking free. Had it not been for our Mayors skills and selfless dedication to the wellbeing and prosperity of our town, this proposal would almost certainly have been passed by SDC. We have got to this point by well-researched facts and information and well-reasoned challenge, not political posturing. Those of you who were at the Special meeting in the Town Hall where Jonathan presented the facts will have heard the support from Tom Skinner, District Councillor for Hardwicke, who challenged SDCs proposal and who took the trouble to come and speak from the floor. Debbie Young, District Councillor for Chalford, also vociferously questioned the motion in the Stroud Chamber. You can watch the webcast of SDCs meetings on their website to see for yourselves just who has spoken out and supported us in this fight. So, if you see Jonathan, our Mayor, out and about in the town, you might want to thank him personally and let him know how much we all appreciate his bringing the town together in the fight to protect its future viability. Magnifi cent weather allowed us to co-create and spend time with warm-hearted, fun-loving, talented folk - our Tribe. Surrounded by the idyllic Cranham Woods, Bucks Head Farm, Birdlip hosted our second Playcircle Family Camp. Bright, festival fl ags fl ew in the breeze, bell tents and marquees festooned the fi eld and an infl atable octopus waved its eight enormous arms, welcoming more than 200 to the camp. Families arrived with the distinctly familiar buzz of the community, adults wandered amongst the tents chatting, and children ran excitedly greeting friends old and new. Later, families gathered around a roaring campfi re toasting marshmallows and singing a mixture of world music, campfi re classics and lullabies. People emerged from tents to blazing morning sunshine, and queued for a bowl of the best porridge ever provided by Kat and Sam and tea or coffee (on tap, completely free all weekend!). Whilst some ate breakfast and relaxed in the Big Brown Bear Tent the more energetic among us joined for a morning stretch in the central circle. Workshops, activities and treatments were in full swing; from harmony singing and African drumming workshops, Forest School and sports activities, to parents talking circles, Shiatsu and Indian Head Massage. Crafts included Faerie gardens, clay fun, painting, dream catcher workshops, green woodwork demos and so much more! Our children played happily together with the abandon only found in pockets of safe communities; knowing we look out for each others children at Playcircle. Indulging in a blissfully relaxing Shiatsu treatment in a rare moment of relaxation, I watched as children played and adults talked animatedly with one another, stole quiet moments for themselves or with their little ones under trees. I thought about the vision each of the Playcircle team share: contented parents looking out for one other whilst parenting happy, contented children and there it was in a fi eld, in Birdlip! The events we hold are only successful due to the talented and generous people that attend Playcircle. So, we recall that wonderful weekend with deep and heartfelt gratitude to everyone who held a workshop, session or treatment. Everyone there made it what it was. Thank you. If you would like to join one of our Playcircle sessions with your little ones, we would love to meet you. We offer Musical Story Sessions, Natural Play Space and Babes in Arms (for under 12 months), all weekly during term time in Nailsworth, Stroud, Dursley and Cirencester. Steve has also been a Youth Worker for the last 50 years and is very involved in the day to day work of the Youth Club. On Sunday 21st July, Steve was persuaded to go to the Youth Club on a pretext, only to find the place full of people wanting to join in with the 50th anniversary celebrations of his involvement in Youth Work. It was some surprise when he opened the door! The hall was filled with Youth Club members, parents, local Councillors, our MP David Drew, and a number of Steves colleagues from the past, together with friends and fellow Trustees. Speeches followed and a number of people spoke of their long association with Steve and of his dedication over the years to improving the lives of young people, both in our town and elsewhere. Tea and cakes and the traditional cake cutting followed and a great time was had by all. Steve thanked everyone for making the event quite an occasion. Nailsworth Youth Club provides a place for young people; a place to socialise Thanks to Nailsworth Rotar y Club Nailsworth Rotary Club very generously donated a five-bar field gate for the lower entrance to Box Wood on Scar Hill, and on 4th July volunteers from the Rotary Club helped George Griffiths, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust (GWT) South Cotswold Warden, to install it. The Club works in close co-operation with GWT, volunteering for work in GWTs wildlife reserves, and on this occasion GWT have benefitted from a new vehicular access to Box Wood, enabling heavy tools and materials to be taken in and out of Box Wood for easier and more effective maintenance. The new gate is not for public access, but will enable maintenance vehicles to enter the west side of Box Wood and complement the other field gate on Pensile Road/Devils Elbow, each currently affording much needed vehicular access to the steep hillsides on which Box Wood stands. For some of us it is the time for a new beginning a time for change - of teacher, school or the beginnings of a new adventure at University. For others its an indication that another year is flying past and autumn is knocking on the door. And for still others its simply the next month in a long list where nothing ever seems to change. Whichever it is for you, the summer which came before it was an unusual time. Weeks of glorious sunshine when the Staycation was definitely a winner. Most unlike our normal weather, after one of the longest, coldest winters in recent memory. The Bible tells us that there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. We are coming into a season which has traditionally been linked with Harvest Festivals. A clear line for the end of the summer, preparations for the winter ahead and a celebration of crops safely gathered. Whether it is gathering the harvest, beginning the new academic year, anticipating cooler days, or just continuing to deal with the daily grind we can make a choice to embrace this season and the activities that come with it, or we can fight with it, desperately trying to push back time or sink beneath the weight of living.Christians believe that no matter what season we are facing, be it the end of summer or a time of change in our personal lives, we can always look forward with hope. The Bible also tells us that the Father God wants to give us, his children, good things, and Jesus came to give us hope and strength to deal with changing times and seasons. As the nights begin to draw in why not discover for yourself more about the hope and strength and Jesus offers. This could be your time to discover something new. Mary passed away on 24th June 2018, and her funeral at Brimscombe cemetery meant that Mary would be re-united with her husband, in the adjacent plots they had recently purchased. Unfortunately, as friends and family gathered at the funeral, it became apparent that the grave was prepared in the wrong location. After frantic conversations, it was agreed to proceed with the service and return the following week. Some say Mary would have been furious, others say she would have seen the funny side. Mary now rests in peace next to her beloved husband Tony. Mary, a Nailsworth resident for nearly 47 years, loved this area and led a full life. Her last two weeks were spent at Steppes Residential Care home, where she passed away peacefully. Her husband was buried last August. Many also recall Mary collecting discarded jeans from locals, to fabricate an amazing, and well exhibited, long, denim overcoat. Mary was also known for her love of cats and donkeys. Local Travel Agent is the Best in Britain Local Travel Agent Miles Morgan Travel were crowned the best in the UK at a glitzy awards ceremony in London last week. Miles Morgan, with a shop in Nailsworth, won a total of three awards at the premier travel event. Managing Director Miles, received an Outstanding Contribution to the Travel Industry award in recognition of the success of the agency and his work for the industry as a whole and as a board member of ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents). Best Travel Agent for the South West and Wales was also awarded for an unprecedented 3rd year. Miles Morgan said I was totally overwhelmed, we beat TUI, Thomas Cook, Trailfinders, Flight Centre, the list goes on. These companies are much more established than us and certainly have a lot more shops. Morgan puts the success down to his staff: I am so proud of the staff at Miles Morgan Travel, their knowledge is exceptional but their genuine interest in looking after our customers and their holidays is what sets us apart from others Local Manager Hayley Peachey said When I first heard I was so shocked, we work very hard for our customers but for that to be recognised as being the best in the UK is nothing short of incredible, we are so proud Hayley continued - I would like to thank all our customers in Nailsworth for their support. We love looking after you and thanks to your loyalty and bookings we have come out the Best of the Best. Its wonderful. Miles Morgan Travel, established in 2006, has 15 shops around the West Country and South Wales. Sales continue to increase as clients return to booking on the High Street following internet horror stories. The High Street is returning to being the fashionable and clever place for people to book said Miles. People have realised it can even be cheaper to book with a travel expert as they know where to look for the best value, and secure bookings. ............................................... .......................................... ......................... ..... ..... ..... ...... ......... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ........................................ ........................ 10 BUSINESS BUSINESS Nailsworth Computers celebrates 10 years in Nailsworth The Nailsworth Computer Shop in George Street is celebrating 10 years of service to Nailsworth. This is an example of the complexity of the history of some of our buildings Text and Research by Sharon Mansell and Paul Butler. Photographs by Paul Butler Walk along the pretty lane between Shortwood and Newmarket and you will find an interesting property called The Nodes. This residence is a substantial Victorian house built on the framework of an older pair of houses which were substantially enlarged and embellished. A fine classical porch incorporating Tuscan and square columns was added to the principal elevation along with a parapet, quoins, and window dressings made with local ashlar. The rest of the faade was finished with a coat of render incised to look like ashlar. Following a change of fashion in the twentieth century, the rougher stone was exposed to reveal the original Cotswold stone. The Nodes is currently owned by the Cunild family but the history of this dwelling may go back to Roman times. Numerous Roman coins have been found in the adjoining fields and excavations carried out in the 1980s revealed a long wall which might be Roman or medieval. The earliest surviving deeds of the house go back to 1718 where it is described as two dwelling houses. In the nineteenth century it was a collection of cottages, stables and outhouses. In 1871 we have the first mention of the name of the property and a single residence, dwelling house..situate at Shortwood.and now called Noads House. The two main cottages had been turned into one house. Before 1839, The Rising Sun inn, operated from the back of The Nodes, probably attached to some buildings which have since been demolished. In 1959 the old inn sign could still be seen. The inn was nicknamed The Rickety Rail by locals because the rail of the plank bridge over the Miry brook was the undoing of many as they made their home after a merry evening! While renovating the gardens, the remains of an old brick oven were found. This was perhaps once part of the inn. The inn was also used to stable the horses belonging to worshippers at the local Shortwood chapel. In 1839 Isaac Hillier, the local bacon curer bought the property for 200 and he rebuilt it for his second son, Peter Playne Hillier. Peter was already running the family business and after his marriage to Mary Astle in 1857, he moved into the elegant house at the Nodes. In the garden, is a beautiful white wrought iron gate which was given to Peter and his bride as a wedding present by the workers in his fathers factory. It was returned to the house after it was discovered during the renovation of Prices Mill in the early nineties. Peter Hillier died unexpectedly at the age of thirty two whilst he was visiting his sick brother, Thomas, in London. Peter was thrown from his carriage in Pall Mall and died two days later. Within 2 weeks Thomas was also dead from TB and it seems that their father never really recovered from this loss. Isaac Hillier moved into the Nodes for a short time but then moved on to Lot House. The Nodes was sold to Thomas Abbot who was by now the manager of Hilliers factory. Since his death in 1912 the house has been lived in by more than 5 different families. It has seen various extensions, renovations and changes but what has emerged is a fine house in the beautiful setting of the Miry brook with far reaching views of the Newmarket valley and Highwood. Jon Kelly runs a successful piano shop in Bath. The piano is such a great instrument to have in the home and it is having such resurgence currently with artists like Emeli Sand and Tokio Myers. We wanted to donate the piano to the school as my son attends. Lots of the school children have piano lessons and now they can practice on a fantastic, modern piano and learn a skill they will hopefully keep for life. Mrs Pennington, Head Teacher, felt this was a great opportunity for the pupils to progress playing. We currently have 15 to 20 piano lessons per week on our old piano which is now over 100 years old. One hundred years in glorious Gloucestershire! The school started in 1908 with just 30 pupils in Warwickshire, moving to Gloucestershire in 1918. Celebrations included a ball, a school fete, special collaborative artwork and an alumni event for former pupils and staff. Inspired by old photos and anecdotes unearthed as the birthday approached, staff also put together a commemorative booklet. You can find it via the schools website or via this link Beaudesert - Celebrating 100 Years in Glorious Gloucestershire. It traces key events in the schools history: buying land from the National Trust for sports fields across Minchinhampton Common; how boys and staff coped with no fuel and little food during WWII and memories of tobogganing on suitcases down the hill to Nailsworth train station to catch the train home for Christmas! In the autumn term, Beaudeserts Autumn Fair returns on Saturday 13th October 10am-4pm. A daunting prospect, but also an exciting phase. Change can be good but parents will also be starting a new chapter in their lives. Empty nest syndrome can leave parents feeling overwhelmed and unable to think rationally. Its the parents role to aid this transition. This means resisting the urge to check in on offsprings social media as it can increase anxiety. Dont make any sudden major changes such as moving to a new house, or renovations within the first six months. Some top tips for helping you through this turbulent time are to plan in some activities. Plan a few trips, travel is a great distraction and as you can go out of peak times it can also be cheaper. We need to distract ourselves from the missing member of our tribe, so we can focus on the positives. On July 19th I was invited to a Parliamentary meeting chaired by Keith Vaz at Westminster on Flash Glucose monitoring. This helps people with diabetes to monitor their condition, thus helping the NHS to save money. Keith Vaz wrote an article in The Guardian about the postcode lottery which decides who gets an NHS prescription for sensors and who doesnt. Youll probably have seen Theresa May wearing a sensor on her arm. They measure interstitial fluid producing a graph of how blood sugars are behaving which is then accessed by a reader. South Gloucestershire CCG doesnt see the benefit of these sensors, whereas North TRISTAN FIELD GARDEN SERVICES Established 1992 Commercial & Domestic Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping Tel: 01453 832620 Mob: 07778 312827 tfieldgardenservices@btinternet.com ANGELA BROWN HYPNOTHERAPY Do you experience anxiety, sleep issues, panic attacks, exam nerves, issues around food, anger, confidence, IBS or phobias such as spiders, flying, dentists, the dark? A discussion then explored the merits of sensors and the sense of injustice surrounding the postcode lottery. The audience were invited to make comments and ask questions so I stood up to praise the care provided by Cheltenham, Stroud and Gloucester hospitals which resulted in my gaining a prescription. I also spoke of the importance to keep pushing for prescriptions for patients who would benefit from one. Even Keith Vaz doesnt qualify. Last season I won secondary ambassador of the year and was very excited to receive my badge in January. Although the season was very up and down for FGR, Im confident about this season and am very happy to be back in league two. Im in my third year as the ambassador for Rednock, and my fourth year overall. I love being an ambassador; its a great experience. This season Ive taken up a new role behind the scenes. Following on from a great away win against Grimsby, FGR came out in our third kit and fighting, but after the first couple of minutes it became lacklustre. Oldham earned the first free kick of the game, flying right over the cross bar. FGR were having more possession, but they werent taking their opportunities. After 20 minutes, Doidge was fouled in the box, but no penalty was given. Unfazed, Reuben Reid shot with power, missing the defenders, flying straight pass the goal keepers arms into the goal; 1-0 in the 21st min. Soon after Oldham started to fight back, but Liam Sheppards defending stopped the crosses. As half time drew nearer FGR were earning lots of corners, Carl Winchester launching the ball towards the top right corner, unfortunately missing. Oldham fought back creating some good chances, forcing some good saves by our goalie. At half time the score was 1-0. Oldham started the 2nd half as the dominant team keeping the goalie on his toes .As the rain came FGR earned a free kick taken by Reece Brown, quickly going towards the top right corner but deflected off an Oldham player, converting into a corner. Despite FGRs best efforts no goal was scored. FGR earned more corners through a period of pressure and Reece Brown was subbed for Paul Digbee. Oldhams defending grew stronger. As the rain poured down we gave away a questionable penalty, which was converted and shortly after Dayle Grubb was brought on. FGR were now the better team. Dayle Grubb earned us another goal however it was disallowed. As 90mins approached 5 minutes extra was added, but neither teams managed to take advantage. The final score was 1-1. Overall FGR were the better team and should have taken their early chances.
