It all happens on 30th November, and everything starts at 4.30pm with Old Market closed to traffi c, and the shops staying open into the evening. Nailsworth Noel Ð Date for your diary The Clock Tower has been decorated with the knitted poppies again. The Fire Brigade put them up, and this was fi tting. They too, over the years, have had their own ÒfallenÓ in the public service. On page 6 they appeal for volunteers to join the Brigade to carry on their great work in keeping us safe. Our School reports tell us that our children are being encouraged to think of the wider community, as most of the schools are engaged in fund raising for charities. This is the kind of nurturing that will keep up the tradition in this Town of volunteering. In these troubled times our local Citizens Advice Bureau is a vital way of helping people in distress, and on page 6 they seek volunteers. Nailsworth in Bloom is also asking for volunteers Ð see page 15, and slowly but surely local people are getting defi brillators installed around the district Ð see page 22. This is the final display for now: a fitting end to the four year commemoration of those that lost their lives in the Great War. For me the poppies also reflect on the sacrifices made across our community during that conflict. Thank you to everyone involved this year, the knitters, the organisers, the installers. A magnificent effort from all. That Car Park Review ItÕs great news that SDC have finally officially put an end to the Car Parking Review that threatened our town with charging for parking. SDC provided a consultantÕs report that they claimed provided a legal basis for charging. We were able to comprehensively debunk that and SDC was left with no choice but to end the consultation. We have now formally complained about the review: the poor evidence collection, the lack of scrutiny by Officers and Councillors and the lack of engagement with Towns and Parishes. The proposal caused a lot of angst in the town and meant there was wasted time and effort. WeÕd like SDC to take steps to ensure this doesnÕt happen again, either for parking or any similar proposal. Town Meeting Every year we have to hold a meeting with Residents where we relate what Council has done for the previous year and answer your questions. Last year we changed the format and combined the event with the MayorÕs Reception - giving out the Town awards in the same meeting. This year we changed the location of this meeting and held it in a marquee in the bus station. Organisations from across the town manned stands, highlighting what they do in the town. It was so successful that we are doing it again next year, in a larger marquee! The date for your diaries is 27 April, 2019, which is AprilÕs Market day. If youÕd like to enquire about a stand or table, please contact our Clerk, Katherine Kearns on 833592 Jonathan Duckworth - Mayor The RBL Nailsworth are delighted to inform the people of Nailsworth that the dedication of the Stained Glass Window took place on Sunday 28 October 2018 at St Georges Church. Nailsworth Town Council has had the paving and wall around the war memorial repaired before the November Remembrance commemorations. The wall has been re-pointed with lime mortar, some of the wall stones have been repaired and broken, uneven, paving slabs around the war memorial have been replaced. The stonemason sourced the stone used to build the original memorial from the now closed Minchinhampton quarry. The stone was in an overgrown pile in a fi eld and has been painstakingly moved and cut, for use on Nailsworth and other local memorials. The black stain on the stonework below the clock faces of the Clock-tower, NailsworthÕs other war memorial, has also been removed. Pam lives in a fascinating stone cottage tucked neatly behind the clock tower, next to HobbsÕ Bakery. From her lounge the view through the right-hand window is the town centre, busy and vibrant. Look left and PamÕs pretty, secluded garden comes into view. With a stream running along the bottom, itÕs PamÕs favourite place to relax on warm evenings: watching the ducks and listening to the stream as it ripples gently over the stones. Pam lived in Horsley for twelve years and has lived in Nailsworth for 26 years. Although sheÕs now very happy at ÔWatersmeetÕ in town, when she first moved in she couldnÕt settle and after just a week moved back to Minchinhampton. Apart from her loyal service to the NN, Pam enjoys reading, pottering in her garden and catching up with her family. Her constant companion, apart from Sid, her partner, is her little rescue dog, ÔJackie No.2Õ: a replacement for a beloved pet ÔJackieÕ, who sadly died. In the past, Pam has played the organ in Church for christenings and also enjoyed playing the piano, although she rarely plays these days, due to arthritis in her hands. In her younger days, Pam made all her own clothes and one of the stylish, full-length, evening dresses she made for herself, has subsequently been worn to an event by one of her great granddaughters! In 1971, whilst Secretary for the local WI, the County Craft Show was staged in Cheltenham - quite a prestigious show and Pam is proud to show me an original programme she treasures from the event. With a twinkle in her eye, Pam relates the story of the ornament that went missing from her garden. Having reported its disappearance to the Police, whilst on her delivery round the following day, she spotted the missing ornament outside someoneÕs front door. To make sure she wasnÕt mistaken, Pam asked her neighbour to look at the ornament to make sure it was hers. Ownership confirmed, she then had to telephone the Police to say it had turned up on her doorstep! The distribution team at Nailsworth News, together with the rest of the team, extend their heartfelt thanks to Pam for the loyal and long service she has given to the paper and to the town. We wish her many more happy years at ÔWatersmeetÕ and many more years with the NN. 6 - Window Cleaning - Fascia & Guttering - Conservatories - Pressure Washing - Carpet Cleaning - End of Tenancy - Solar Panel Cleaning 07840427913 Call today on: Come along to an Information Session on 18th January 2019 at our Cirencester Office, 2-3 The Mews, GL7 1HY 10.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and find out more about how you can make a real difference to your local community. Do something amazing Ð volunteer with Citizens Advice Nailsworth Community Fire Station is currently recruiting ÔOn CallÕ Firefighters. The station currently has both women and men who have various skill sets/professions between them, as part of their full time occupations. The general public may not be aware that across Gloucestershire only five out of the twenty-one fire stations are crewed by full-time fire-fighters, the remainder being staffed by On Call Fire fighters, many in rural areas. These On Call stations are not staffed all the time, unless crews are responding to an emergency via an alert from their pager, weekly training or carrying out various duties such as prevention work. Each On Call fire-fighter fulfils a contracted, variable number of hours a week. They are paid a monthly retainer fee in line with this contract, with additional wages being earned for emergency calls, training, prevention work and maintenance of the station and equipment. Each On Call fire-fighter carries a small pager, activated when an emergency arises and must respond into the station within approximately five minutes. They could be called to attend road traffic collisions, fires, floods, animal rescues, assisting other agencies and much more! The range of incidents that the Fire Service attends is ever expanding. When the call comes, day or night, On Call fire-fighters, perhaps at home with family, out with friends or at their place of work, must drop everything to attend an emergency when required. ItÕs a role which requires great commitment but one that is extremely rewarding and crucial to the community. The role of the Fire Service has changed over the years and prevention work has, quite rightly, come to the forefront. Modern day firefighters now work to reduce fires and fire deaths through numerous Community Safety initiatives. This is an extremely important role carried out by On Call and Full-time fire-fighters across Gloucestershire. If youÕve ever considered being a firefighter, live in Nailsworth or want to find out more information about the role, pop in and have a chat with us on one of our Tuesday training evenings from 1900 until 2100. For further information please visit www.glosfire. gov.uk and view our recruitment-oncall- firefighters section or alternatively you can express your interest via the link www.glosfire.gov.uk/oncallfirefighter LOCA L N EWS CHURC H & FA I T H Churches Letter This month sees two important events and Christ Church and St Georges will be present at both for one very good reason Ð they both help us to remember that God loves us. The first is Remembrance Sunday Ð one hundred years since the end of World War 1. This year there will be a series of events to commemorate the anniversary, including concerts at Christ Church (4th November 7pm) and St Georges (10th November CHECK TIME). On Sunday 11th both churches come together, with the town, to pause, remember and reflect. Something we do every year, but this year is an important opportunity to remember those who have died, particularly in WW1, but in other conflicts since. When we forget to remember the horrors of war, and the cost in terms of life, then we risk forgetting the damage humanity is capable of inflicting upon itself. Time together at the town Remembrance Service helps us to remember those from this place who have died, and also to remind ourselves that this is not GodÕs plan for humans. His plan is to draw us closer to Him, and to each other. He never causes war and always seeks to show us just how much He loves us Ð and this is most obvious when we think about His Son, Jesus. The second event we will be sharing, along with the other members of Churches Together in Nailsworth: Nailsworth Noel Ð a much more upbeat event! I hear Father Christmas has promised to be there, which is very exciting. Christmas (and I know it seems very early to be thinking about it) is a time when it is much more obvious that GodÕs plan can work Ð people often remark on the ÔgoodwillÕ and the kindness shown to others at this time of year. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world that He gave us his Son Ð Jesus was born at Christmas (he is the reason Christmas exists!). We love to remember that and so we will be returning with our hugely popular ÔGet in the PictureÕ activity. Come and have your photo taken (we will provide the costumes) in your choice of character from the story of the birth of Jesus Ð you can use the photo to send Christmas cards that bring a little of the real story of Christmas to life. Perhaps it is difficult to agree with this considering the wealth of beautiful old buildings that we have in our town, but it is certainly a lovely building. The front of the building is high quality ashlar, no doubt from a local quarry, with an elegant shell hood over the door and a classical balustrade on the top. This gives it a typical early 18th century appearance, but the house is older and the rear of the building shows its true age as a typical Cotswold gabled house of the late 17th century. Inside a magnificent half spiral staircase with elegant twisted balusters goes up the full height of the house. It is said that it was made by a pupil of Grinling Gibbons, a famous 17th century woodcarver. The panelling on the ground floor is also special, along with a shell recess over a panelled door. Other surviving features include original Crown glass, again probably 17th century, with some intriguing graffiti etched onto it by a certain Elizabeth Smith. Who was she? Answering this question would give us a delightful insight into who lived here in the past. In the cellars you can still see the spring that runs underneath the house and gives us a clue to its name. The house has undergone various changes over the centuries including a Victorian bay window to the front and later alterations to the side and rear. Mystical creatures, magical birds set against traditional and not so familiar landscapes. Several works resulted from a visit to Kelmscott Manor and the British Museum. A fascination by medieval textiles, carvings and manuscripts contrasts with an interest in abstract expressionist painters such as John Hoyland, Albert Irvin and Gillian Ayres. An entry into the EmbroiderersÕ Guild exhibition ÔPage 17Õ, resulted in a series of book covers leading to her own ÔSara-Joy StoriesÕ as an imaginative series based on the Forest of Dean. The gradual transition from a popular and reminiscent book to her own version of a book cover made in embroidery to reflect imaginary happenings in her local landscape is humorous and with her own branding inventive. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped with this great achievement. In line with Britain in Bloom, we operate all year round and not just in spring and summer. Summer flowers have continued to bloom and whilst little visible work has been done by the team in recent weeks, planning for autumn/winter planting has begun: Market Street now has a number of winter hanging baskets and the railing planters have a new crop of plants. Our small team of volunteers need your help to maintain gardens, plots and planters to keep Nailsworth looking vibrant all year round. You might take part in planning and fundraising, help with events such as coffee mornings/ workshops or help out on the planting team Ð more physical but they tell me itÕs a good workout; clear pavements of weeds, wash down the street signs and street furniture and finally weed the public gardens in the town. Inspiration came from my neighboursÕ green roofs on their garden structures: between us we have six, soon to be seven green roofs. The environmental benefits are huge: they reduce the number of heat sinks in built-up areas and increase the habitat diversity, especially for invertebrates; providing sheltered undisturbed green spaces. They are good for pollinators, absorb rain water, releasing it gradually via the plants. an alpine roof. We planted a variety of spring bulbs, alpines and ferns, providing nectar from early spring to late autumn. So how do you make a green roof? Simply, a waterproof box on a roof filled with growing medium and plants. ItÕs important to ensure your building can take the weight: a few more roof joists will be required to spread the load and vertical supports need to be adequate. A green roofed play house would be easy to do and a good practice run! ItÕs a good idea to Òblack jackÓ the manage with a lot less. The planting medium needs to be light while being able to hold moisture and provide vital nutrients. Rather than soil, online research indicates an 80/20 mix of vermiculite or crushed brick to compost. I used used a 70/30 mix.Thank you Keith for your hard work on this project and faith in my ideas and thanks to our neighbours Katherine and Simon for their help. Thanks also to Christoph who sowed more seeds than he realised when he inadvertently started the Forest Green Roof game! We are not experts but would be happy to try to answer questions anyone may have on this subject. Environmentally positive projects like this can help with Nailsworth in Bloom. There is a small but hopefully growing army of volunteers who helped put Nailsworth on the blooming map this year in fine style. Silver Gilt at our first attempt! So if you have a green roof already, or are planning one, do send them photographs please. Louise Clarkson Green roofs improve the look of buildings as well as being incredible insulators, blending in and making the space seem larger. I chose a meadow style with spring bulbs for my first: It gave me a comfortable, warm work space; cool in summer, though south facing. I was delighted to receive a card from neighbours Katherine and Simon, letting me know how lovely it looked. From my side only the grass at the front was visible. Maintenance consists of an annual strim and removal of unwanted seedlings, though IÕm no longer the owner. Ten years on and I live next door with my partner Keith who built a store at the back of our house. Gently sloping surfaces will need something to stop the growing medium shifting down the roof. We used rigid mesh and old carpet underneath the mesh to retain water between rainy periods. Choice of plants will be determined by ease of access, watering systems, sun and exposure to the elements and a down pipe fitted to the lowest point of the roof is good for those exceptionally rainy periods. The depth of the box will depend on the plant types to be used. Grasses, small bulbs and alpines need about 10 cm depth. This year we are developing our outdoor learning facilities, offering our younger children opportunities to explore and learn from the natural world, spending several hours a week engaging in a myriad of exciting lessons and activities in our outdoor learning space. Our two new school beehives offer the children many opportunities for learning through nature. Older students have been studying hard, whilst those who wish to go on to higher education prepare to submit their university applications. Upper school students have already had the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting trips, including mountain expeditions, surfing, orienteering and rock climbing. Always looking for new opportunities to make meaningful contributions to the Nailsworth community, we have recently raised money to purchase an AED (Defibrillator). This piece of life-saving equipment will shortly be installed next to our front gate on Church Street, for use by the whole community; until then it is located in our school office. We would love to welcome you to our open day on Wednesday 14th November to witness first-hand how we instil into our students a love of learning. We hope you will join us. One in four of the population are diagnosed with a mental health problem at some point in their lives. Now, we are able to say, slightly more easily, that it is ok not to be ok. Easy to say when you are well, or your condition is as well managed as it can be. But what if you are not ok? Sometimes we need to know there is somewhere to go where we wonÕt be asked questions, but will be welcomed. Where there are people to talk to, or a space to just sit if that is what you want. Welcome to Renew Nailsworth, a space where it is ok not to be ok. We donÕt offer medical input or counselling, but we do offer a safe space with activities if you want to join in, or a chair to sit in if you just want to be somewhere other than in your room. You can find us at CarshaÕs CafŽ on Wednesday where we have activities FGRÕs Community Offer Before I give you the latest news from the club at the top of the hill, I must tell you about the club community offer. Groups, clubs, schools, community organisations and first time families can attend a league match free of charge. You will have tickets for the North stand (a covered standing terrace) unless you have accessibility or mobility issues then you can be seated in the East Stand. If you are interested please contact community@fgr.co.uk IÕm having so much fun as an ambassador for Rednock School. It gives me a great opportunity to do lots of new things, like writing in the Nailsworth News which gives me a good idea of whatÕs required to be a sports journalist. Heard over the Tannoy system at every match, I represent a female youth perspective for the Code of Conduct for fans and players. At the end of September when we played Crawley, I was co-presenter, with the ambassador from Pates school for a film showing the eco credentials of the football club, to such as jigsaws, colouring, knitting Ð or anything else which our volunteers might bring along. There is also a space where you can just sit and think, or be. Renew Nailsworth is part of the Renew Wellbeing network of spaces across the UK (www.renewwellbeing. co.uk) offered by churches working in partnership with local NHS bodies and other organisations who help those with mental health issues. Helen Grant Ð Minister Christchurch be shared with visitors and schools from across the country and abroad. Nominated by Phil Butterworth, Vice Chairman and head of the ambassadorÕs scheme for the Pride of the Cotswold awards in the Spirit of Youth category, I was proud to be runner up in the finals. I have also completed my ambassador notice board in the girls changing rooms and put the green Devils (a magazine produced by ambassadors) out for people to read in my library at school.
