Blue Plaques for the Fallen of World War II - British Legion Since 2014 we have researched and documented the 78 Soldiers from World War 11, commemorated on our Nailsworth Memorial. These are available to visitors of our Archives Centre at the Town Hall. From these results, we have installed Blue Plaques at their known residences before enlistment: not an easy task and one that required a lot of detective work and door knocking. Due to the lack of witnesses, we are unable to locate them all, so looking ahead, we need to think about the twenty-seven WW11 Soldiers on our memorial, whilst we still have witnesses. In 1917 he visited the scene of the Battle of the Somme where, between July and November 1916, nearly 1 million soldiers (Allies and German) died and many more were wounded. He recorded the following words: ÒI had left it mud, nothing but water, shell-holes and mud Ð the most gloomy dreary abomination of desolation the mind could imagine; and now, in the summer of 1917, no words could express the beauty of it. The dreary, dismal mud was baked white and pure Ð dazzling white. White daisies, red poppies and a blue fl ower, great masses of them, stretched for miles and miles. The sky a pure dark blue, and the whole air, up to a height of about forty feet, thick with white butterfl iesÉÓ His description inspired Nailsworth Quaker Meeting to create the collage/ banner to illustrate the scene of what had been a killing field only months before. It was installed on the wall of 1 and 2 Quaker Close as part of ÒNailsworth Remembers 2018Ó. Many of the butterflies were made by more than 160 children from Bussage, Sheepscombe and Nailsworth. The excitement of the children at this new sports facility was incredible. It has been a long time coming Ð funding came from the development of The New Lawn stadium and was meant to compensate residents of Forest Green and Nailsworth for loss of recreational land. Originally the money was for a MUGA where the FGR car park is, but that did not happen. The New Lawn opened 12 years ago, so you can see how long this has taken! The MUGA does not, however, use all the Section 106 money from the stadium build and earlier this year the Town council decided on an innovative solution to split the money between the fantastic MUGA for the school and developing a Community Park on Miles Marling fi eld. Plans for this are progressing and there has been consultation on how it is to take shape. It is a shame when space and facilities are lost from a community, and hopefully the new MUGA and the Community Park will go some way to compensate. Many people helped with the MUGA project, but IÕd particularly like to mention Coles Electrical, who gave their time for free to fi t the lights around the MUGA. Budget time Yes, it is budget-setting time once more! We are having a Special meeting at the end of November to discuss CouncilÕs budget. There shouldnÕt be any surprises, but infl ationary pressures mean it is likely there will be a small increase in our Precept. Meeting the Council We have occasionally held Councillor Surgeries where residents can meet Cllrs to ask questions. These have never been particularly well attended, so we are considering a different format. The idea is that we hold a ÔNailsworth Question TimeÕ with a panel who are able to answer questions about our town and what happens in it. IÕll let you know how the idea is progressing. Christmas At this festive time of year IÕd like to wish everyone a very good Christmas and New Year. Christmas is a time when families get together but spare a thought for people who are on their own, perhaps there is a single person nearby who would love a chat and some company. Loneliness is a big issue for many in our community and it can feel worse at times like Christmas Jonathan Duckworth As you all may have read in the October edition of Nailsworth News, the Town Council is going ahead with plans to create a new Civic Centre by moving the Town Information Centre (TIC) into the library and the Town Council offi ces into the current TIC. This will increase library hours and footfall to strengthen the library service, give more volunteering opportunities, share resources, cut running costs and help to increase the visibility and accessibility of the Town Council. We are pleased to announce the planned date for the opening of the new TIC will be Monday 14th January 2019, with the Town Council offi ces opening a month later. The project is progressing well, re-design of the space has been discussed with the staff and volunteers, and negotiations with suppliers for the movement of utilities and furniture are well underway. We have already welcomed fi ve new volunteers who are currently in training at the TIC. Please pop in and say hello and make them welcome and if you are interested in volunteering, in either the TIC or library, please pop in and have a chat with the current volunteers or contact the Town Council offi ces on 01453 833592, e-mail clerk@nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.uk. Clear snow from a road, path or cycleway You can clear snow and ice from pavements yourself. ItÕs unlikely that youÕll be sued or held responsible if someone is injured on a path or pavement if youÕve cleared it carefully. How to clear snow and ice do it early in the day - itÕs easier to move fresh, loose snow donÕt use water - it might refreeze and turn to black ice use salt if possible - it will melt the ice or snow and stop it from refreezing overnight (but donÕt use the salt from salting bins as this is used to keep roads clear) you can use ash and sand if you donÕt have enough salt - it will provide grip underfoot pay extra attention when clearing steps and steep pathways - using more salt may help www.hse.gov.uk/myth/xmasmyths.htm Snow Warden Volunteers wanted The Town Council is busy preparing snow plough operator and groundsman in Windsoredge, Watledge and for what could be a harsh winter and is and coordinate other volunteers. Christmas Day CHURC H & FA I T H CHURCH & FAITH Preparing for Holiday (or Holy Day) Are you like my wife and I, when preparing for holidays or special days out? We look on the internet and first decide where we would like to go. Once decided, we check out the restaurants and the best places to visit on TripAdvisor. As the holiday approaches we decide what clothes to take, having checked the long range weather forecast. How much money should we take? If travelling by car, do we need to get it serviced? There is a lot of preparation involved but that is part of the fun of looking forward to a big event. The end of November marks the start of Advent: a time when Christians prepare for the coming of the Christ Child on Christmas Day. Are we going to do a Nativity this year? Who can do a reading at the Town Carol service? We have special readings from the Bible throughout December, along with our favourite carols. We also begin to prepare ourselves spiritually, as we reflect about the true meaning of Christmas. As we prepare, we start to feel excited about the coming Festival. I am sure that many of you will be really busy with your own preparations for Christmas, but to avoid having a ÔCranky ChristmasÕ you might just take some time out to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, when Jesus came to earth as a baby. The muralÕs theme is the way in which water has been harnessed to generate, through industry, the wealth that has established the town of Nailsworth. The design is slightly abstract: water and cloth flow through the mural, picking up waterwheels, cogs and line shafts that power the machinery. Central to the piece is the hand loom with the weaver in the loft. Macs have a great reputation for quality, with few problems but, like most things, do have the occasional upset. Ravi Dalal, the owner of MacLoving, is here, in Nailsworth to help. When Ravi suffered an assault, he lost his taste and sense of smell and was forced to reconsider his career as a chef. He qualified at the London College of Fashion as a photographer and his passion liaising with the artist to establish when the mural will be painted. The other three wonderful designs in the competition are still being considered and the artists were asked if they would like their work displayed elsewhere in the town. Our clinic is equipped to an extremely high standard with two consulting rooms, a preparation room with x-ray, ultrasound and dentistry, as well as a dedicated sterile theatre for surgery. Most animals wonÕt need hospitalisation in their lifetime; our clinic will provide veterinary requirements for the majority of local pets. Our Veterinary team, Cyril, Katie, Max and Emma have a wealth of experience, alongside Registered Veterinary Nurses - Kirstie and Julia, with Alice and Sue fronting Client Care. As an independent practice, the recent corporatisation of Veterinary practice is something weÕve resisted. We value our independence and offer the veterinary care we would want for our own pets. WeÕre owned and run by those working within it locally and not bound by a distant corporate enterprise, so we can take decisions without delays. It has a variety of properties with wonderful communal gardens. Residents, actively involved in the way the village is run, participate in making the major decisions and the Directors, volunteers elected from the residents and their families, attend regular company Board Meetings and quarterly General Meetings. With long leases of over 900 years, 1% transfer fees and low ground rent, steps are taken to future-proof the development, for the security of the members of the village. Though sometimes challenging, the residents agree it is a lovely place to live: a lively community in a secure environment for the active over 60s as well as a stunning location at the Inchbrook end of the Woodchester Park Valley. Whatever our feelings about this event, we seem to throw ourselves into celebrating. According to a YouGov survey, families typically spend £835 on Christmas. WeÕre also more generous with our present-giving than many European countries, spending £473 on average compared to £345 in Germany and £273 in France. However, to cope with the expense, one in three adults turns to credit cards, payday lenders and shop credit. But with interest rates up to 1,500% APR, many people get trapped into long-term debt problems. There is an alternative: Stroud Valleys Credit Union is your local community-owned financial organisation, offering a range of fair and responsible loans. From the start of the loan, borrowers know how much theyÕll pay and for how long and thereÕs no small print. Joining the credit union costs just £2 admin fee + a £5 savings deposit. Have a happier Christmas this year by talking to us about any financial help you need. Dear Constance We have decided as a family we want to get on with reducing our environmental impact at home and want to start by trying to reduce our household waste. Can you give me some handy tips? Hello We can all easily reduce our waste levels: by adopting simple new habits you can really make a difference. The issue of high levels of waste is often confused with better recycling habits but in fact we all need to work towards consuming less and reducing our waste levels altogether. Food waste can be reduced by adopting simple techniques: making soups and stocks from leftover vegetables, freezing leftover or extra food and adopting more effective storage techniques. These simple changes will reduce waste and save your family money. Check out LoveFoodHasteWaste.com for great leftover food recipes and food storage tips. Did you know: Every year homes in the UK throw away 7 million tonnes of food waste worth £12.5 billion and if we all stopped wasting food it would have the same environmental impact as taking 1 in 5 cars off our roads. On the food waste theme again, the excessive amounts of plastic food packaging going to landfill, can be avoided: take your own containers and bags to the shops. Join the trend! NailsworthÕs Morrisons are very accommodating and quite used to customers bringing their own reusable containers to the deli counter to be filled with food. Bring reusable mesh bags and fill them with your fruit and veg to avoid single use plastics. Hayley and the team wish you a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you soon 15 LOCAL AFFAIRS County CouncillorÕs Report Highways During the last year several pathways have been resurfaced in the town and in the Tynings and Lawnside estates. Three pathways have had dropped kerbs and tactile paving installed, of particular benefit to those with sight loss. It is very disappointing that we have not achieved a reduction in the speed of traffic in several locations in the Nailsworth area. We shall continue to pursue a positive outcome and remain aware of residentsÕ concern on this issue. Recent OFSTED visit/report You may be aware that some 18 months ago OFSTED visited GCC ChildrenÕs Services and subsequently produced a damning report on the state of ChildrenÕs Services in Gloucestershire. Despite many changes and a £104m increased budget for Children and Families, OFSTED say changes and improvements are not taking place quickly enough. GCC, like many other authorities, is finding it very difficult to recruit social workers and 40% of the countyÕs current social work team are agency staff. PCC/Fire & Rescue Service The Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service is one of the many services run by the County Council and a new Chief Fire Officer has been appointed. Our Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Surl, is currently consulting again as he feels he could manage the Fire & Rescue Service in addition to the Police Service. LED Lighting The majority of LED white lights have been installed throughout GL6. If anyone has a problem with the brightness of the lights shining directly onto their windows, GCC will fit shades to the lights. Growing Your Community Fund The Council is pleased to allocate funds to help the following organisations in Nailsworth Ð Play Gloucestershire (activities at Lawnside during the school holidays), Breakfast Club at the Arkell Centre (during the school holidays), the new gym at the Primary School, Nailsworth in Bloom, and Allsorts (working with children and families). The children created delicious Italian cuisine with fresh ingredients enjoyed by all. Is it possible to live a plastic free life? Will McCallum, Head of Oceans at Greenpeace and author of ÔHow to Give Up PlasticÕ recently gave our students and parents a riveting private Q & A session on the impact of plastics and how we can change things. Owls class visited the Museum in the Park where they took part in various activities and saw an inspirational display of WW1 facts and memorabilia, participated in a quiz and made their own label for a poppy to commemorate a name on the War Memorial. At the end of the visit the children sang a rousing chorus of the QuartermasterÕs Stores. Otters class visited Gloucester Museum. HereÕs a report by Stan age 8: ÒWe went to the museum and saw a red, massive, awe-inspiring motorbike and a really cool model train set. We saw a few gas masks. There was massive pin-making machine. It was epic. A few minutes later we got to Gloucester Cathedral. It was gigantic. When we got in I saw an organ; we walked past it and found some pictures of the stained glass windows. Then we went to a steep flight of steps and found a dressing up place that was cool because there was a sword. After that I saw a thing that you could make your own gargoyle! ÒHaving moved to Nailsworth five years ago and retiring a couple of years later, I was keen to do some local and interesting voluntary work to support my community. I contacted Citizens Advice and following a relaxed interview, became a trainee. Together with eleven other trainees, I learned the basics of the areas of advice provided and the processes the service uses and after three years we have continued to support each other. The support given by everyone at CAB is great: a friendly team with supervisors to advise and check that you are asking the right questions and giving the right information to clients. This is a real comfort, particularly in the early days of being an adviser. In addition, the CAB website is full of useful information to show clients if itÕs relevant to their issue. The work is really interesting and every client comes with a different issue or set of circumstances. IÕm always learning and was assured at my interview that I would never get bored and they were right! ItÕs also very satisfying to help someone at every session.Ó Come along to an Information Session on 18th January 2019 at our Cirencester Office, 2-3 The Mews, GL7 1HY 10.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and find out more about how you can make a real difference to your local community. We have volunteering opportunities within our dynamic team We couldnÕt function without the dedication of our volunteers - our most valuable asset. I love going on the AmbassadorsÕ coach to away matches because we do quizzes, songs and have fun. I also like going on the supportersÕ club coach because they have a competition to predict the time the first and last goal are scored. On Saturday the 10th of November, I went to Oxford United away in the FA Cup. The 0-0 draw means we now have to do a replay at home but it was great fun. Me and my cousin were getting the chants started WE ARE FGR SING WE ARE FGR, everyone joined in. The match was a very even game, since Oxford are in the league above. Both teams had many chances but neither actually scored. Dayle Grubb was the first to try his luck but his shot was stopped. FGR should have taken the lead, however substitute George Williams couldnÕt make it our day. FGR took 452 fans with Paul Digby being our Man of the Match. I recommend coming to an away match because the atmosphere is great and itÕs a good experience. Evie Urquhart Ð Sports Amabassador Rednock School FGR reaches across Europe My brother in Sweden sent me a photo of a Swedish newspaper and in it is the story of Forest Green Rovers - Ôthe worldÕs greenest clubÕ. They are describing that the club is the first in the world to be certified carbon neutral by the UN! An interesting story on how far Nailsworth is reaching in the world? Katarina Sveder-Cain diabetes prevention programme and itÕs due to be rolled out to PriceÕs Mill fairly soon. It offers 7 weekly group discussions followed by 6 individual support sessions. So, if you get another letter from the surgery inviting you to join this programme, go along and find out how you can take charge and improve your health and well-being. And in the process, you will help others like me make the necessary changes. Marilyn Miles Old Bristol Road Nailsworth GL6 0LA 01453 837537 Are you Pre Diabetic? If you look at me you might think I was pretty healthy Ð I donÕt smoke, IÕm not too overweight, I can still walk into town (and further), I garden and IÕm pretty active. However, after a recent health screening for over 70s at PriceÕs Mill GP surgery I discovered that I was prediabetic. That means I have a high risk of developing Type II diabetes which increases my chance of having heart disease or a stroke. Scary! I received a letter from the surgery telling me things I could do, like change my diet, lose weight, do more exercise, drink less alcohol but it is lonely doing it on your own and hard to know if you are doing the right thing.
