In earlier years, heÕd walk around pushing a bike, hence his nickname. Before he died last November, he was a familiar fi gure around the town and to the traders in particular. Sue Reed has prepared a linen table cloth inscribed with all the nicknames Mike thought up for people around the town. If you fancy a bit of stitching, please ask for it in the TIC in the Library and sit for a while to embroider one of the names. The TIC and Library are open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays Ruskin Mill College Spring Community Volunteer Day On Saturday 16 March Ruskin Mill College welcomes the community to a Spring Community Volunteer Day. This new project hopes to create a Peace Garden by clearing an overgrown area and planting white peace poppies to commemorate two Horsley soldiers, brothers Alan and Herbert Tuffl ey who died in the First World War. Alan was born in 1891 in Calcot and Herbert in 1897. In 1911 the family lived at Tiltups End, Horsley and Alan, aged 20, was a private in the 3rd Gloucestershire Regiment at their barracks in Horfi eld, Bristol. Unfortunately AlanÕs service records have not survived, so we donÕt know when he joined the Kings Hussars. Alan, aged 24 and now a corporal, was killed in action on 13th October 1914 and buried in the Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery in France. Like his father, Herbert worked as a farm labourer. His service records have not survived, so we donÕt know when he enlisted, but his medal record card indicates he was a private in the 7th Glosters when they were mobilised for war in June 1915. Herbert was killed in action on 25th February 1917 aged 20. Both brothers are remembered on the Horsley War Memorial. We will meet at Gables Farm Shop at the top of Hay Lane, just off the A46 at 9.15 for 9.30 start, fi nishing at 1pm. Refreshments will be provided. Appropriate clothing and footwear advised!
