IÕm hoping that it was as successful as last yearÕs, with many town organisations showing off what they do. As well as showcasing the town, I awarded several groups with the Town Awards. They went as follows: The Sports Award was presented to Nailsworth Primary School. Over the last year the school has worked hard toimprove sporting equipment for youngsters in the town, aroom full of rowing machines allows for lots of exercise andcompetition. They have also opened their new Multi Use Games area, which was funded by part of the money from theNew Lawn Section 106 money. The Arts Award is for a team of people, all volunteers, wholast year started changing how the town looks by committingto enter Nailsworth in the Heart of England in Bloomcompetition. Not only did they win a Silver Gilt through theirefforts, but they transformed many parts of the town with flowers, planting, baskets and troughs. Their extraordinary efforts are continuing and spreading. The Youth Award went to the Nailsworth and MinchinhamptonYouth Forum Group, part of Stroud District Youth Council. The group brings young people together to discuss and deal withissues and problems that young people in the area face. Finally, the Town Shield. This year has seen a momentous event for Nailsworth, with the first tenants moving into the Community Land Trust development at the bottom of Lawnside. The ten homes in Valley View will belong to the town forever, and residents with a Nailsworth connection have first option at renting them. The CLT has over 230 members, and is run by a board. Even though I am part of that board Iwould like to recognise what Nailsworth Community LandTrust has done for our town. Whilst the Town Council has been involved with these winners, they clearly show something I strongly believe in; that Council A fully equipped, first class veterinary clinic open Mon -Saturday Proudly Independent shouldnÕt concentrate on doing things, but instead should help others do things. The end result is greater than anything that the Council could do on its own, and is much more inclusive and sustainable. Elections next year This Council is about to enter its fourth and last year. Next May there will be full elections for all eleven councillor positions. Councillors give up their time and use their expertise to ensurethat Council is run properly and is making relevant decisions for the town at this first level of governance. There has been a great change in how this council operatesover the last few years, and some of our practices are beingused as examples to other councils. What Council needs is evolution and change, and this means new people finding out what Council does and how it works. If youÕd like to knowmore, contact one of the Town Councillors, or the Town Clerk, Katherine Kearns. 3 NAILSWORTH 01453 70556 0 Your small, local nursery for home grown hardy perennials, cottage garden plants, herbs, alpines and roses¥ The nursery is based on our farm in the South Cotswolds with walled kitchen garden and mixed herbaceous borders ¥ Open for visitors Saturday 10 to 5 April until September¥ Telephone: 07799 738710 Walnut Farm, Bagpath, Tetbury GL8 8YQ @ Walnut Farm Tetbury WEÕREPEATFREE MICROSOFT & APPLE SERVICED & REPAIRED ONSITE HARD DRIVES REPLACED : NEW SCREENS FITTED MEMORY UPGRADES & VIRUS REMOVAL BRAND NEW & USED WINDOWS 7 & 10 LAPTOPS & PCÕS ALSO IMACS & MACBOOKS ALL READY TO GO WITH NO HIDDEN EXTRAS COMPUTER PROBLEMS? 01453 832151 NAILSWORTH COMPUTER SALES & REPAIR SHOP 4 Lloyds Bank Building Ð Then and Now! Positive comments from residents were reported back by officers, so that slight alterations might be made and Planning permission will be sought in the next couple of months. The development will include four one-bedroom apartments, five shared ownership properties and eleven affordable rented properties, with either two or three bedrooms. They will be the first council built properties in Nailsworth for over 40 years. Work on the sheltered housing scheme in TannerÕs Piece is going well. These will be one and two bedroom apartments with a lift to all floors, scooter stores and a car park. EGYPT MILL HOTEL & RESTAURANT Nailsworth GL6 0AE 01453 833449 ¥ www.egyptmill.com BUSINESS Waterside Garden Centre Reborn A A lan Roper is the ManagingDirector of Blue Diamond Garden Centres, the companythat last year bought Waterside Garden Centre in Nailsworth from Wyevale. ItÕs quite extraordinary that Alan was the person who designed and supervisedthe building of Waterside in 1995. Geoff Hamilton, the well-known BBC gardening broadcaster, was present at the opening. Alan was brought up inCambridgeshire, and as a young manhad friends in Avening, so used to drive along the Avening Road regularly. Following professional training, Alan had already started his careerin Horticulture and when the site in Avening Road became available for a Garden Centre, he picked up the challenge. With financial backers the deal was done and Waterside came to life. Alan speaks fondly of his time in Nailsworth back then. Waterside became very successful and readers will remember TubbyÕs being brought in to run the restaurant, whichalso proved a success. However, when the financial backers decided to sell Waterside to Wyevale, AlanÕs connection to Waterside and Nailsworth came to an end - at least for a while! In the years following, Alan became employed by Blue Diamond, eventuallybecoming Managing Director; thoughwhat still remained important to him wasto provide gardeners with good valueand good quality plants and equipment. Blue Diamond has its roots in a familyrun business in Guernsey. Blue DiamondÕs natural progression was to set up a series of Garden Centresright across England. Alan told us that having bought eight of the Wyevale Centres, he suddenly woke up onemorning and decided he needed to get Waterside Nailsworth back. It had, after all, been one of his first major projects 24 yearsearlier. Alan and his company want tocontinue the originalethos of selling goodvalue plants andgarden care productsat reasonable prices. You wonÕt see many items labelled £10 off, as their intention is to sell products ata sensible price inthe first place. He wants to concentrate on plants, witha better rangeavailable, as well as garden sundries andhe sees the restaurant as an important partof the garden centre. Blue Diamond have revamped the wholeCentre with a much neater style, tidiedup the surroundingsand are currentlybuilding a childrenÕs play-centre in the restaurant. In the final analysis Alan wants to enhance Waterside, and make it an important part of the local community, and will engage with our community inother ways in time to come. April saw thecelebration of JesusÕ resurrection, and an Easter day festival; you may havehad an Easter egg or two! The Christian year tells the story of Jesus throughthe church seasons. From his birth, celebrated at Christmas, to his death on the cross, showing his love for allpeople, and beyond to his resurrectionand new life; that new life we celebrate with the symbol of giving and receivingchocolate eggs. Easter day has been celebrated butwe are still in the Easter season. The Christian season of Easter continues pastEaster Day and Christians look aheadto celebrating His return to heaven onAscension Day, this year 5th May. Then another celebration! With the festival of Pentecost at the beginning of June, we look forward to celebrating the birth ofthe Christian church. The church then moves into what we call ÔordinaryÕ time. But no time is ordinary as we learn of the life of Jesus, which in itself is extraordinary. There are many things in life to look forward to, inordinary and special celebration times ofthe year. Life in the church has a rhythm, a pattern of events and life for all of ushas its own unique rhythm. We will all be looking forward toNailsworth Festival this month; to the sharing of fun activities, celebratingtalent through concerts at various venues; a time of bringing peopletogether and opportunity to shareconversation; an opportunity tocelebrate. We hope for warmer weather in Mayand look forward to putting beddingplants in and seeing the wonderfuldisplay of flowers that brings Nailsworth Dying without a Will. Now thatÕs a real tragedy. Yours Richy H H ello Richy, I agree hearing SirJames BevanÕs statement was a powerful and shocking messageand as you say itÕs time to take action by adjusting our daily habits and raising awareness. Avoiding long showers, deepbaths and showering twice a day are easy steps. Tackling carbon and water savingissues simultaneously is a great idea, hot water are used in the kitchen with taps and dishwashers accounting for8 Ð 14% of water used in the home. When hand washing dishes donÕt let the tap run free and run the dish-washerfully loaded. Use the economy settingand for maximum green points use thetimer to run the machine overnight, when demand on the grid is low. The least efficient and dirtiest power stationswonÕt be running and each unit ofpower will have a slightly lower carbonfootprint. The UK tea council estimates that we drink 165million cups of tea daily and ifwe habitually boil double the water weneed, we could be wasting 3,525 tonnesof CO2 daily. LetÕs try to fill the kettlewith only what is needed. The EnergySaving Trust concluded that if we boil the water we need to make tea, instead of filling the kettle everytime, enoughelectricity wouldbe saved in a yearto run nearly halfthe street lighting in the country. Symptomsof dementia can include confusion and disorientation, making it difficult forsufferers to know where they are going and why, and for search teams to locate them. You can help by signing up to the Herbert Protocol on their behalf and filling in significant details on a simpleform, handed to police when the personis reported missing. It includes previousaddresses and special locations, such asa family grave, which may be a draw to them; hobbies and regular routines; photos and up to date description - sometimes hard to recall in the panic of finding that your loved one is missing. Under the leadership of Simon and Rachael Freeman and with the full support of the club, two youth teams, U12Õs & U14Õs were formed. Within six weeks, FA affiliation and acceptance into the Junior Premier League was obtained: the highest completion level of youth football outside academies. Trials were held, players signed on, facilities found and secured and the story began. Of the 30 players signed, only eight had played JPL football previously, so the step up and ask of the boys was huge andthey surpassed all expectations. The U12Õs began the season with mixed results includingsome heavy losses. Soonthey understood the levelrequired and upped their game, finishing the season winning the league and the GFA County Cup.The U14Õs did very well in pre-season and in the leagueand went on to be unbeaten and convincingly winning by 7points. One thing that really standsout in both teams is their support for one another. They play as a team, covering whenneeded. Whilst the ethos of the club is winning, the boysÕdevelopment is key andplaying with a smile essential. Everyone involved atShortwood Utd are extremelyproud of the boysÕ achievement and development this season. The youth are a major partof the continuing overallrebuilding of the club and theaim is to continue to developplayers that can step up intomenÕs football confidently and at a high standard. Thank you to everyone whohas supported and believed inus. We couldnÕt have done it without you. We would like to run more teams but at presentthe lack of training and playingfacilities prevents it. Trials for next season are being held inJune.
