THERE IS NO PAPER PUBLISHED FOR JANUARY OR AUGUST Mike Harvey Documents Lives of Nailsworths WWii veterans Can you help finance plaques for WWii veterans? Have you visited the Nailsworth Archives? You will have read about Mike Harvey in the Nailsworth News. Last year Mike was awarded the Town Shield and as part of his volunteer work, has produced some fine volumes detailing the lives of Nailsworth people who served in World War 1. Many of you will also be aware of the plaques he has produced to mark the houses where those service people lived. Some of you may have followed the walks led by Mike, to view the plaques around Nailsworth. At Nailsworth Archives, you can see and handle these volumes, upstairs in the Town Hall, open to visitors on Monday and Friday mornings between 10am and 12 noon. The vast array of documents and photographs available belong to the people of Nailsworth. Whilst the records are in a rather overcrowded room, work is progressing to make them more accessible. We have nearly 12,000 photographs on a searchable database and the files, maps and books are being indexed and made more readily available. Mike and other volunteers are now working on WWII records, for which he has some funding but the WW1 funds have all been spent. Recently he has discovered some undocumented service-people to add to his database but there are no funds to provide plaques to mark their homes. Plaques cost approximately 35 and examples can be seen around town. In order to complete this work we are asking for contributions to a fund for the shortfall. If you feel able to contribute, send or hand in a cheque, however small, to the Nailsworth Council Archive Fund at the Town Council Offices next to the Library. Do come and see! You will be made very welcome. Joyce Affleck Nailsworth Archives Town Council Small grants available Nailsworth Town Council has 4,000 allocated for small grants to town organisations. Nailsworth Town Council are working with Nailsworth & Forest Green Scout Group on ambitious plans to transform the buildings on King George V playing field. The plans would combine new changing rooms, a workshop for the Groundsman and a place for Nailsworth's Scouts and Guides to use as their headquarters. The project is in its early stages and those of you who came to the Annual Town meeting on Saturday 27th April will have seen some initial ideas for the new pavilion. Nailsworth Scouts have been in the area since 1907 and the Guides since 1919. There are thriving Beaver and Cub sections and two Scout sections as well as Guides. Brownies and Rainbows also meet in town. All in all, they deliver exciting, adventurous scouting programs to over 100 young people every week. The Scouts currently use the Town Council-owned Army Cadet hut on the playing fields as their headquarters, but the wooden building is over 50 years old and needs replacement. The Town Council are also keen to improve the Groundsman's workshop and of course the changing rooms. With a common goal the Town Council working party hope to bring a modern more efficient building to the playing fields. Its a message from the dolphins as they leave earth ahead of its destruction. As far as I know Nailsworth is not about to be destroyed, but I am leaving and I do want to say thank you. It would be fair to say that I am leaving sooner than I anticipated, but I am looking forward to a new role as an RAF Chaplain and, having seen the support you give the Remembrance Sunday service, I know that you will be able to understand why that is important. It has been a pleasure to live and serve here for the last four and half years and I cant believe how quickly the time has passed. From having fun at the school, to eating cake at the Nailsworth Festival I have been impressed with the community spirit and enjoyed the welcome. Nailsworth is a little gem of a town. Its not perfect, but nowhere is, and you should be proud of all that it does. My prayer is that you continue to fi nd ways to work together, to build your community and to help those who are struggling for whatever reason. But for now, goodbye and thank you. Not for the fi sh, but for including me, for giving me the opportunity to work with you and get to know you. God bless you, Helene Grant Christ Church Helenes fi nal service will be a service of celebration on 7th July at 10.30am at Christ Church. Everyone is very welcome to come and join in. School holidays are nearly here! Older children bid farewell to primary school, looking forward to new schools, the holiday season is upon us and hopefully, some sunny days ahead! Holidays are a break from routine, time to relax and enjoy different experiences and adventures. We all need time to unwind from busy lives. The word holiday is derived from the Old English word h.ligdg (h.lig "holy" + dg "day") and originally referred to special religious days, days of celebration to commemorate festivals and saints days. In the book of Genesis we read the story of God creating the world. After the sixth day, God rested, then blessed the sixth day and made it holy because it was his day of rest from all the work of creating. From the beginning of time, God knew the need for rest and established a day of rest, a Sabbath. Taking a rest day, is an important part of a life, work balance, time for us to feel refreshed and ready to tackle work, whatever that may be. We are more productive when we take a break from our busy lives. Rest days and fi nding a work/life balance in todays society can be diffi cult, burn-out is becoming a common term. Gods provision of a rest day wasnt simply about time off and a work/life balance but about fi nding space for time with Him. Although our holidays are no longer holy days, they can provide opportunity to connect with God; to enjoy and refl ect on the wonders of the world we live in; thank God for them and perhaps think about the place God has in our lives. God created a wonderful world and if youre not going on holiday, look at the beauty all around Nailsworth. Go for a walk, visit a friend or come into one of the towns churches and receive a warm welcome. Enjoy the summer and enjoy Gods blessing in times of rest and relaxation. Rev Caroline Bland, St Georges, 01453 836536, rev.carolinebland@gmail.com Rev Stuart Radford, Christ Church 07956 657759 revstuartradford@yahoo. co.uk Church Letter H E R I T A G E HERITAGE Heritage Open Day - Quaker Meeting House The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and Historic England have worked together to survey all the Quaker meeting houses in England. The full list was released on 12th May, the CEO of Historic England Duncan Wilson said Quaker meeting houses are precious pockets of calm in an otherwise hectic world, and Im delighted to see their quiet simplicity celebrated through listing. They are a largely unsung group of fascinating and surprisingly varied buildings that reflect the history, attitudes and ethos of the Quaker movement. Nailsworth Meeting House was first listed as Grade 2 in 1951, rising to Grade 2*. Not just because of the historic interest and its high level of maintenance over the last three centuries as a place of worship, but also for its contribution to the local community. Used as a meeting house in 1680, the Meeting House in Chestnut Hill has graffiti on the windowsills dated 1683 and 1684 but was not registered as a place of worship until the Act of Toleration was passed in 1689. The two homes attached retain their Grade 2 listing, numbers 1 and 2 Quaker Close; the wardens house and an upstairs flat. Quaker meeting houses tend to be unassuming buildings, a reflection of the Quakers simple values. They embody function over ornament and are plainly decorated and furnished as they need neither a symbolic focal point such as an altar or a prominent pulpit for preaching. On Saturday 14th September the meeting house will be open from 10am to 5pm as part of Heritage week and all are welcome to come and look round. Although not listed, you can visit the Beech Hut in the back garden and the Peace Garden at the front of the site. Other buildings in the town centre will be open and the Town Council plans to enhance the day with music, story-telling and other events to lend a celebratory air to Nailsworth. Other meeting houses in Gloucestershire open on Heritage Day are Cirencester (Grade 2*) and Gloucester (Grade 2). 5 Soak up the sunshine and join us at our waterside terrace for chilled drinks, BBQ and pizzas. We will actively pursue this for a further development site for Nailsworth CLT and will let you know how this progresses. Meanwhile, we attended the formal opening of the Tanners Piece flats for older people, offering state of the art accommodation plus a lift to help access. There are also plans to clear the Ringfield Close site and rebuild 20 homes 15 for rent, three for shared ownership and two for older persons shared ownership: soon to be the subject of a planning application. As Councillors we are immensely proud to support these proposals. Climate Change Action Scientific evidence is clear that this is the biggest threat we face, requiring big changes to our way of life and possibly our very existence. There are two groups, Nailsworth Climate Action Town, meeting monthly in the Mortimer Rooms and the Carbon Neutral Horsley group. Do please attend one of their meetings. You will find them advertised in this journal and in Horsleys Parish Magazine, Horses Mouth. Norman Kay 833458; Steve Robinson 834270; Sue Reed 833472. County Councillors Report Highways There has been major resurfacing on the A46 up to The Tipputs and we continue to push for resurfacing from the Shell Garage to Rooksmoor. Disappointingly, this is scheduled for next financial year but to support bringing this scheme forward, email the cabinet member for highways vernon.smith@gloucestershire.gov.uk emphasizing the bad condition for all road users. The Highways Budget, which cannot be spent on the A46, can be used for small improvements, not scheduled in the near future. In the pipeline are resurfacing in Churchill Close, Valley Road, and pavements in Nortonwood and Lawnside. A new bus stop has already been marked in Nortonwood, allowing elderly residents to access the bus directly from the pavement. FGR Parking Enforcement Rejection of the FGR stadium in Eastington by the Planning Committee, means both Councils will need to work with FGR to improve car-parking on match days. Several meetings with FGR have resulted in the attendance of Parking Enforcement Officers when large numbers of supporters are expected. Adult Social Care and Communities We can report that the station in Nailsworth has recruited and trained a number of new members. If you are interested in joining the dedicated force, please call in at the Fire & Rescue Station on Tuesday evening (training night) or contact the Fire & Rescue Service Direct. Climate Change The Council agreed to an 80% reduction in corporate carbon emissions by no later than 2030, striving towards 100%. We will ensure that all major plans have clearly identified strategies to reduce carbon emissions and report quarterly to the Environment Committee. Transforming Town Centres Although our town has very good occupancy of its retail premises, we cannot become complacent and I have shared my report with Town Council and District Council. We need to continue to encourage shoppers/visitors to our town: we are currently working with the Town Council to improve signage to our free car parks and there are places in the town which would benefit from a lick of paint. Our dedicated team of volunteers continue to brighten up our town with flowers well done Nailsworth Bloomers and good luck when the judges visit on 15th July. The award was given by the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC), for the quality of its housing and support services for active retirees. Only 27 from a total of 1220 entries were selected for the competitive National Final and it was emphasised that the level of support from current residents was the key judging factor. BBC Journalist Jenni Bond, was the main speaker and met Peter Wilson for a brief chat. Susi Cernoch, Manager for Woodchester Valley Village said: Were absolutely delighted to have won this award as it means that staff, residents and visitors are really happy with the village. The group, featured in last months NN, took up the baton from the National Totally Locally initiative and literally ran with it. Word around town is that the campaign has been really useful in getting the message out to shoppers, that a fiver spent locally will make a huge difference to the towns economy. Its all about increasing the footfall in the town and the Fiver Fest really got people talking about shopping locally. The group dont ask local shoppers to spend more, but simply to change their buying habits and spend 5 from their weekly budget on goods or services from a local shop, rather than a supermarket. It might be sausages from the butcher, bread from a local bakery. We are so lucky to have so many excellent, independent, retail businesses in Nailsworth, selling a range of good quality products. The Group will meet again shortly for a review of their initial campaign. Then theyll move on to roll out a second campaign towards the end of August, possibly on the back of a local summer event, when hopefully the weather will have improved. More than 40 local shops and businesses are currently signed up, all of which offered special purchases or services for the Fiver Fest campaign and its hoped this will increase in the future. Check out the facebook page to see which of your local outlets are already involved and what they have to offer. Then head for your favourite and support the local economy with your purchase. To research this article I visited Betty and Beatties Antiques in Market Street, to speak to Helen, one of the groups organisers. The shop is a perfect example of whats on offer in our lovely town. Our main projects are: The waterwheel fl oral display at Wheelwrights Corner The rainbow-themed planters on the Fountain Street side of Mortimer Gardens Continued renovation in Mortimer Gardens, with natural dye plant beds, a bee friendly border, patriotic colours of red, white and blue in the fl agpole border, a dry shade area and our 'Sunlight over water' border curving above the stream. Ongoing regeneration of the Clock Tower border 48 hanging baskets outside shops, cafes and other businesses A refresh of the tubs along the Old Market Street shops and further tubs being placed around town e.g. Mortimer Gardens New railing planters opposite Tesco and around the town map in the Town Square, using both annual and sustainable planting A rethink for the grassed area at the bottom of Spring Hill, an ongoing project Temporary summer planting on the top part of Market Street Garden a work in progress as our sensory garden will begin in earnest in the autumn. The Nailsworth in Bloom team are now focused on weeding and tidying in readiness for the judging. Youre invited to help, and we especially welcome volunteers on the following days: Tuesdays - 12noon - 3pm Wednesdays - 6pm - 8pm Fridays - 11am - 2pm Tidy the Town: Saturday 13th July 9.30am - 12.30pm Sunday 14th July 9.30am - 12.30pm For more details contact: Lizzie Townley on 07736 359381 We also need help with watering as the rain isnt necessarily enough. If you are able to help please contact: Liz Steele on 07899 862625 This year the Town Council changed the mowing regime on Miles Marling Field off Nortonwood and the results are colourful! Spring saw a good crop of cowslips with plenty of purple knapweed to come later in the summer. The Miles Marling Field meadow has a wide path through the middle so that dogs and people can enjoy walking among the fl owers. Coincidentally, in May Plantlife UK launched No Mow May, a campaign to help Britains pollinators by encouraging people to do less well, less mowing. During May Bank Holiday people across the country counted the number of fl owers in their lawn. Nailsworth Town Council took part too. Plantlife UK calculate the new meadow areas in Miles Marling Field produce 40 grams of nectar a day, thats the equivalent of ten sugar cubes a day, supporting 3,644 honey bees. Two schemes have started up in Nailsworth to help us do our bit to tackle this disaster. The water bottle Refi ll Scheme Feeling thirsty? Local cafes and pubs have agreed to refi ll water bottles for free so there is no need to buy plastic bottles, ideally have a non-plastic bottle that can be used over and over again. Look for this signs at: Coco Confectionary, Hobbs House Bakery, Gyles Allen Hairdressers, Nailsworth Town Council, Nailsworth Youth Club, The Canteen, The Village Inn, and a little further out Ruskin Mill Caf and Horsley Community Shop. All these refi ll stations are on a downloadable national app scheme run by Refi ll.org. Recycle your crisp, nuts and popcorn packets (any brand)at the Terracycle recycle box at the Co-op Stores in Market Street. These packets cannot be recycled with household waste so with help from the Coop, NCAT has started this scheme using this international social enterprise. It takes the packets and makes them into other plastic goods. NCAT will earn money for this, which we will use to invest in climate action in the Town. These schemes are being set up by Nailsworth Climate Action Town Group with the help of the Youth Club, local businesses, the Town Council and the Co-op Stores. Sally Thorpe www.ncat.btck.co.uk Nailsworth News brings you another in our series of articles about historic buildings in our Town. out of Old Barn Close and the existing farm buildings. The stables became the Abbeyfield House, the dairy and brew house became Corner Cottage and part of the original house plus the wagon store became The Haywain. There is a charming photo of it from the 1880s showing 2 fine Victorians standing in front of its ivy clad walls and curved porch canopy. If you walk around the back of the building you can see some old outbuildings with striking pillars each side of the door and these appear to be the oldest part of the property. Inside the house there are some original windows and shutters and a quaint larder and pantry but much of the interior has changed. The existing staircase seems totally out of place for such a fine house, especially as half of it is taken up with a Stannah chair lift! It will be intriguing to see what lies behind the 1950s fireplaces and partitioned walls. In the hallway there is a curious curved alcove which must have had some original purpose. It seems that the house was built by the Clissold family in the 1820s. In the 1851 census, Joseph Clissold was living here and it seems that he lived here until his death in 1881. Joseph Clissold ran the Nailsworth brewery that had been started by his stepmother in 1820. His son W. G. Clissold was born in this house in 1838 and he became one of Nailsworths most distinguished citizens. He took over the brewery and, in addition to his day job, he was a county councillor, a magistrate, a teacher at the Shortwood Sunday School and treasurer of the Shortwood Chapel. He certainly had a strong sense of civic duty and a great deal of stamina! In 1868 he bought Chestnut Hill House which he enlarged and altered. I should mention that the Clissolds are holding a family reunion here in Nailsworth in September 2019 and they are hoping to celebrate their reunion with a display of their family history. The family is spread around the world as far as Australia and it would be good if the Nailsworth News could report on their celebrations. By the 1891 census, Edward A Chamberlain, a leather board manufacturer, was living here but It is more difficult to uncover later occupants of the house. Between 1930 and 1950s it became a doctors surgery; a doctor Dunstan and then a Dr Lewis practised here. In 1981 it was converted into bedsits for the elderly and this was how it remained until it was closed in 2016. I look forward to watching how the house is restored by its new owners and discovering what they decide to call it. Perhaps a fitting name would be Clissold House or The Old Stables? Text and Research by Sharon Mansell and Paul Butler. Photographs by Paul Butler. We are also grateful for the assistance the Nailsworth Town Archives in researching this article. The existing staircase seems totally out of place for such a fine house, especially as half of it is taken up with a Stannah chair lift! Barn Close is a very pretty corner of Nailsworth, tucked away behind the Britannia Inn, just off the Horsley Road. Abbeyfield House is a fine building with an early to mid-nineteenth century front to a converted eighteenth-century barn. It has a stone tiled roof, a central arched doorway with a good patterned fanlight and a wrought iron tented porch. Inside there is little left of its original features as it was converted into a doctors surgery and then into bedsits to become an Abbeyfield home. The home itself closed down in 2016 and the house is in need of some restoration. It is up for sale so lets hope that it will be sympathetically restored to its former nineteenth century glory. Old Barn Close House was the original farmhouse, dating back to 1698 and the other buildings were just stables, a hay wagon store and a dairy. Abraham Shipton was living here in the early eighteenth century and his will of 1740 gives us a fascinating glimpse into the possessions of a Gloucestershire yeoman. His only luxury possessions were a clock and clock case worth 1 5s 0d. His only foreign things were one set of calico pillowslips made in France, brandy, tobacco (perhaps smuggled up the Severn from France) and pepper bought for his funeral. It is interesting to note that although Shipton was presumably quite well off, he left few material possessions behind and most of those that he did were surprisingly practical and mundane, like butter churns and pewter cups. The whole close became part of an estate created in the 1760s by a timber merchant. Towards the end of the Eighteenth century and during the early Nineteenth century 3 more properties were created His only foreign things were one set of calico pillowslips made in France, brandy, tobacco (perhaps smuggled up the Severn from France) and pepper bought for his funeral. CLIMATE CHANGE CLIMATE CHANGE Climate Constance Talks Plastics Dear Constance I am very aware of the need to reduce and if possible stop using single-use plastics. I will do my best to limit my daily plastic use and realise there is a lot to change and consider. Can you tell me if it is alright to accept bioplastic and compostable wrappers? Thanks, Liz Hello Liz Thank you for bringing up such an important and somewhat confusing subject. As we make the shift away from single-use plastic we need to be sure we make the right choices. My advice is to look closely at the alternatives, because bio-based plastic or bioplastic does not necessarily mean it will biodegrade. The term refers to a mixed family of materials and to the source from which the plastic was made, not how it will function once thrown away. Compostable bioplastics, including PLA and CPLA, are starch- based forms and should compost within 3-6 months in a composting system which is positive. But any compostable alternatives to plastic must be separated from plastic recycling bins and preferably composted or added to the mixed waste collection, as they would disrupt recycling processes. Actions to limit single-use items altogether, include carrying a refillable water bottle and bringing your own containers to the shops to be refilled. Morrisons are used to people bringing reusable containers in to be filled at the deli counter and Shiny Goodness will refill your Ecover and Faith In Nature bottles. In the meantime, if you still have single-use plastic to dispose of, join the Terracycle campaign (also see Jinny Marshalls article below, and Page 11 for the Refill & Crisp Packets article) or you can drop your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and toothbrush/toothpaste packaging into the box at Avening Primary School. Co-op also has a box for recycling any kind of crisp, nut or popcorn packet. Changes like these catch on so join the trend and pass it on. Hope this helps Constance Recycling Single Use Plastic Fellow residents of Nailsworth, Are you as concerned as I am about the huge amount of discarded plastic polluting our planet? Could we collect some of this and send it to be recycled? Ive found suggestions on facebook and some internet companies that could be used. Terracycle recycles a variety of items including pet food pouches and Im collecting these packets, used for wet pet foods. You might like to join me! After feeding your pet, rinse the pouch well and let it dry, then stuff back into the cardboard boxes the food packets came in. You can get about 50 in a box. When its full (and hopefully smell-free) get it to me and Ill send them off. Ideally we need a collecting point in the centre of Nailsworth or maybe at the Market - suggestions welcome. Another option is to take any plastics you have collected to the Green Shop in Bisley. Is anyone else collecting other items? If so, please share with the town. Lets see what we can do. Our aim is to fill the sessions with as much music and sensory play as possible. We love our folk music and have enjoyed finding new favourites, alongside the nursery rhymes and finger poems. Exploring bugs and flowers has inspired the latest crafts at drop-in play sessions, when felted bees, feather brushes, grass weaving and water play Contact our Escorted Touring Specialists today have been among the activities on Wednesday morning. We also have a new Wendy house, a very kind donation by a Playcircle family. At Thistledown weve had Mouse Hunt sessions, when children enjoyed stomping around with bear ears and face paint noses; we played under parachutes, flora binoculars and woven leaf snakes before tumbling into the cafe for delicious coffee and lunch: a huge thank you to the lovely team at Thistledown. SCHOOLS Nailsworth C of E Primary School Many of our children, performed with the school choir at Nailsworth Festival again this year. As always, they sang beautifully and Chair of Governors, Gill Saville reflected, They were a credit to the school. FGR and Nailsworth School have strong links, but its not just in sport that The Acorn School Caesar, Physics and Camping Its been a busy month in school, with exciting educational activities inside and outside classrooms. A study of ancient Rome, culminating in a performance by Class 5/6 of The Death of Caesar, was followed by a physics experiment looking at the wonders of sound. Meanwhile, Class 7/8 students focused on the senses and the skeletal system, learning how the body works, with help from a 1920s human skeleton, loaned from a Bristol museum. The very brave among them watched the dissection of an oxs eyeball. Outdoor activities included climbing, mountain biking and bush-craft expeditions. On bikes, we explored the local area and cycle trails in the woods. Middle/Upper School students navigated to a forest, made shelters, lit fires, cooked pots of delicious stew and we work together. We regularly invite Forest Green Rovers academy players into school to read, write and create with us. Recently, 21 players joined the school for lunch and our pupils loved every minute! Reception class enjoyed a fun-filled visit to Bristol zoo recently. Their topic has been all about zoos and they visited the animals, spoke to the keepers and learned more about how a zoo functions. When they returned to school, they toasted marshmallows on the fire. After night games, they slept under somewhat flimsy shelters: one of which would have blown away if any of the group had sneezed! Next morning, up with the dawn chorus, students lit fires to cook breakfast. Upper School students are busy with cameras around town for their photography lesson: results to come in the next edition. Barney Franklin - Co-Headmaster www.TheAcornSchool.com made some wonderful collage models of animals they had seen for their Nailsworth zoo. Together with a large grant from the Co-operative Communities Fund, the money will be used for several strands of its activities: next years walking festival; first aid training for volunteers who help with the dementia friendly walks at Ruskin Mill and something towards the next community defibrillator (cPAD). If you have any site suggestions for the next cPAD please contact the NHP treasurer Marilyn Miles on 07801 558931 or marilynmi1947@ gmail.com . Acceptable sites need to be public buildings e.g. a school, shop, pub, community centre, empty phone box. Not a private residence. Fund-raising Walkers Lunch Since December 2012 Ros John has led nearly 100 monthly, five mile walks for health. Starting from Nailsworth, each walk has been different, and participants appreciate her skill and care in preparing each one. Suki Samra, of Lawnside Stores, very generously prepared her annual three course lunch for the walkers on May 1st at the Arkell centre, raising 300 for Nailsworth Health Partnership. Plants were presented to Suki and Ros by NHP Treasurer, also to Angela Endacott and her sister- in -law who kindly helped serve the meal and tidy up afterwards Walk4health If youd like a bit more exercise but dont fancy the treadmill at the gym, Stroud District Council support free walks, run by trained walk4health leaders on Tuesdays at 2pm starting at the Nailsworth library and Wednesdays starting at 2 pm from the Market Hall in the centre of Minchinhampton. Walks are friendly and sociable, last about an hour and cover about two miles. Though there is generally a hill somewhere on the route, we avoid the steepest slopes and often there are no stiles to clamber over. If you have health concerns and want to talk them through prior to your first walk, speak to Hannah Drew at Ebley Mill 01453 754508 or hannah.drew@stroud. gov.uk Nailsworth Film Club - 2019-20 Season Nailsworth Film Club begins its 2019-20 Season with a screening of Stan & Ollie on Friday 6th September: the untold story of the worlds greatest comedy act Laurel & Hardy with exceptional performances from Steve Coogan and John C Reilly. Admission to this, the first film of the season, is 3.00 per person or free if you join on the night. The Committee are currently finalising the full programme for the new Season, which will be announced soon via the website: www.nailsworthfilmclub.co.uk History Nailsworth Film Club was set up in 2003 by a group of enthusiasts with the aim of showing high-quality films to the people of Nailsworth and surrounding villages in a convenient local setting. It is a not-for-profit community group and has no funding sources other than members subscriptions. New or continued support is therefore greatly appreciated and fundamental to the Clubs survival. Her dark curly hair peeps out from beneath her wide-brimmed hat as she stoops to speak to the goats. They run towards her, bunting, pushing and shoving in an attempt to reach the food and its provider first. She loves her tiny animal domain and in warmer weather can sometimes be found sitting in the field watching the goats foraging for food: anything green, including brambles is devoured eagerly and if nothing is found at ground level, Fern, the long- eared Nubian goat climbs an Elder, extending her neck to reach the juiciest foliage at the top of the tree. Lucy, a talented artist, gardener, cheese-maker and goat-tender, sometimes escorts the goats around the small paddock, encouraging them to feed. When newborn kids arrive I love to watch their antics. Like lambs, the kids leap and hop around obstacles, bunting one another as they prance and play. When its time for the kids to leave their mothers, I have a feeling a few tears are shed! But soon there will be more kids to welcome into the world and the process will begin anew. Since the arrival of the goats, the field has become more open and accessible: wildlife is easier to spot from a bench on the lower patio, close to the field edge, where I hope to spend many happy hours in the summer. Lets hope, after flaming June, for a repeat of last summers sunshine and many more happy hours watching the goats. Heather Nicholls NN Editorial Team Priory Church with St. Dominic's Nailsworth in Bloom -Update We are very pleased to include the contribution our church is making for Nailsworth in Bloom this year. Two delightful Versailles planters with pink, white, mauve and blue flowers at the main entrance, where wedding pictures are taken, two smaller ones outside the west doorway with a wild flower area of native plants to complement the many small hawkweeds, plus others, which bloom in the summer grass. The display begins with single and double snowdrops around the church yard - a legacy from Brigadier and Mrs. Winifrede Mathias and Arthur Ransome their gardener, breeders of new varieties -then myriads of primroses. We are developing a 'Living Churchyard' full of biodiversity as the Cotoneasters along the walls hum with bees feasting on their blossom. Patches of bird's foot trefoil are starring the turf around the graves with selfheal adding splashes of blue, all pollen-rich for flying insects. St. Dominic's are once more planting for Nailsworth in Bloom. Two long troughs outside on St. Mary's Hill, with nectar rich flowers for the bees, and Lves corner has cascading blue and white lobelia pots to simulate water, this year's theme. goats at the Bottom of my garden EXHIBITIONS Mon 8 July ~ Sun 1 Sept Ruskin Mill College Students End of Year Exhibition Rich displays of craft, art and culture celebrating and reflecting the work of every student who has attended college during the academic year MUSIC Fri 26 July 8pm English Acoustic Collective Summer School Concert freeAn informal concert which is the traditional finale to the Collectives week long summer school at HORSLEY MILL CANTEEN Fri 19 & Sat 20 July NEURODIVERSITY ~ A Living Conference is a new collaboration between Ruskin Mill and HAY Festival. Knowledge of which end of the bat to use is helpful, but there is on the job training available from our resident experts in these matters. Our Annual Tour visited Staffordshire, where in a game of T20 on the Friday evening, we lost by one wicket in the final over. However, in a match against the Gargoyles Cricket Club from Alstonefield, where we were given our own marquee, walked to tea in the Village Hall with home- made quiche and delightful Victoria sponge, we repaid their hospitality with an 80 run victory, celebrated at the local pub! Heinous I know but theres always one or two that do know the right end of the bat!! If you would like to play local cricket please get in contact with either James Phillips secretary@commonerscricket. co.uk or Timmy Godden 07796 331298 to discuss your Sporting dreams. COMMONERS EIGHTS The Commoners 8s tournament takes place on Sunday 18th August: a local version of the current Cricket World Cup. Bathed in sunshine (already ordered) come along with the family for a day of fun and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Battle commences at 11am and dont worry theres plenty of food and drink to enjoy!! See you there!! village Cricket - an Amusing Observation The bowlers arm reaches optimum height, before releasing its missile at speed. The diminutive figure quaking at the crease, the village postman, takes the full force. Side-stepping the killer ball, he accidentally catches it with his trusty willow, sending it racing for six. On the boundary, the local blacksmith, not built for speed, stands beneath a Chestnut tree, gazing in wonderment at his newly painted boots. He suddenly spots the missile heading his way. A wag in the stand, landlord of the Star and Garter, cries is feet be set in concrete. E ent moved for nigh on a month I dont reckon. Inebriated spectators roar their approval. The blacksmith emerges from the cool canopy into bright sunlight, just as the ball passes between his feet, rolling smartly over the boundary and taking with it smudges of white paint from the newly distempered boots. The final ball and the visitors win yet again!
