After travelling several miles to the ground by mountain bike, I found there are no push bike locking points or bike stands at New Lawn, so I had to lock my bike against a fence post by a fi eld. I fi nd this very odd, considering FGR are always advertising themselves as such a green "eco" club. Might seem trivial, but I for one think it's newsworthy. There are certain professions from which you never really retire, and Church Minister is one of them. In July 2012, when my wife and I moved to Nailsworth, to be near our daughter, I thought I was retiring from the full-time Ministry. Since then I have been back in work twice, retiring in July 2013 and August 2016. I wonder if the Guinness Book of Records has a section for the most number of retirements? Now here I am, an interim Minister of Christ Church. Helene Grant has flown away to become an RAF chaplain and IÕm in charge for one year (two maximum). Soon the process will begin to find a new Minister, when we consult the three denominations that make up the congregation at Christ Church: Baptist, United Reformed and Methodist. On Saturday 14th September, Christ Church will be open like many other buildings in the town as part of National Heritage Day. The following day will see a new series of Messy Church at the primary school and on Sunday 22nd September our monthly Explore Service will be our Harvest Festival. The church scene in Nailsworth has a series of people leaving and new arrivals. Soon Andy Poole will be leaving ÒPsalmsÓ to work in Worthing. We want to place on record a Big Thank You to Andy for all that he has done for the churches in and around the Primary School. So new faces and a new season of Church activities. Hot Tub Leisure, a comparatively new venture based at the Blue Diamond Garden Centre on the outskirts of Nailsworth, sells a range of Sundance Hot tubs/Spas from America, specialising in hydrotherapy and relaxation. The Managing Director, Terry, began his career in the Merchant Navy as an Engineering Officer on QE2 and went on to run a number of successful engineering companies. Kieran, is responsible for the day to day running of the business and has a wealth of knowledge on hot tubs and their benefits. Both hail from Somerset originally, but after visiting Nailsworth Garden Centre, they couldnÕt turn down the opportunity to work from such a lovely town; with the association of Blue Diamond, who have taken over the Nailsworth Garden Centre and invested heavily to make it one of the prime Garden Centres to visit. Research has shown the positive impact of hydrotherapy on conditions such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, fitness recovery, injury and rehabilitation, high blood pressure, migraines and sleep disorders, to name but a few. KieranÕs knowledge of his product is impressive: body buoyancy, increased blood flow, muscle relaxation, effect of jets on pressure points - the benefits appear to be endless. The sleek but practical hot tubs on show are clearly not just for the summer months, but for all year round use. People of all ages living with Autism and AspergerÕs can also benefit from hot tubs: the sensory experience, lights and even music can improve their quality of life and provide a safe and relaxing place to play. With their own service, delivery and installation team, together with finance options from as little as £60 per month, the hot tubs are now more affordable than ever. Once the company becomes more established, they hope to be in a position to work with a local charity to benefit the community they serve. Do pay them a visit. Local people selling at the sale have a special interest in buying and selling; they may be moving or down-sizing and need to sell their personal things. As the name suggests, items offered range from the kitchen sink to diamond rings! We thank Kate at QuirkyÕs and Helen at Betty and Beaties for their continued friendship and support. Choir members take their singing (but not themselves) seriously with a relaxed, well focussed but good-humoured air permeating all their activities. They will sing anything, so long as itÕs good of its type and have moved away from the traditional repertoire, programming each concert as a sort of Òmusical odysseyÓ Ð with as many different styles and genres as they reasonably can. They love the work of Chor Leoni (from Vancouver), The KingÕs Singers and OrpheiDrŠngar (from Sweden). The choir are committed to new music and believe that the future of choral music depends on new compositions. They also enjoy folk songs and sing a wide range of sacred choral music but, do they let their hair down? Well yes, more than you might think! The last set in their concerts often consists of ÒlollipopsÓ Ð doo-wop, show songs, boy band numbers, romantic ballads, when some fancy footwork shows that they arenÕt all work and no play. Stagecraft, choreography and a great deal of Joie de vivre go into making the sets fun for them and their audiences. Over the past ten years the choir has helped raise around £100,000 for charitable works and proceeds from this concert will go to charities supported by Nailsworth Rotary, including the Great Western Air Ambulance and ShelterBox Disaster Relief, plus other local good causes. There will be an interval for drinks and the opportunity to find out more about Nailsworth Rotary. Tickets at £10.00 are available from Shiny Goodness, the Town Information Centre, or contact Nailsworth Rotary via www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/ contact.php?ClubID=2012 Or you can request tickets through our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ RCN2007/ Further Concerts: The Choir will also be performing at the following venues: Egypt Mill Hotel on Thursday 19th September from 7.30pm to 8.15pm (donations welcome) Gloucester Cathedral on Friday 20th September from 1.00pm to 2.00pm (donations welcome) Stroud Brewery on Saturday 21st September from 7.30pm (donations welcome). New members are welcome, and there are no entry requirements, other than a desire to support both the community and charitable causes and have fun. We meet fortnightly at Egypt Mill on ursdays at 7.00 pm, to enjoy a get together, a meal, plan events/ fundraising and decide on distribution of funds. In eleven years we have raised over £145,000. It is a privilege to be based in Nailsworth. Achievements over the past year We have worked with the Stroud ValleyÕs CapelÕs Mill Project, to transform a canal-side area from overgrown wilderness to an attractive walking and picnic spot. Our lunch club at the Arkell Centre on the third Monday of every month, provides a hot meal and the chance for people, who may otherwise be at home alone, to socialise. We also provide free transport for clients and their carers attending the AlzheimerÕs CafŽ in Nailsworth. We plant and maintain several ower troughs in town and run projects at Stroud Court Community Trust to improve the lives of the residents; building a vegetable patch, a sensory garden and a woodland walkway. We support Stroud District Foodbank by running collections in local supermarkets and delivering food parcels to families struggling to make ends meet during school holidays. We also helped to build the Forest Green Community garden behind the primary school. We run the Five Valleys Fireworks at Marling School, together with the Rotary Clubs of Stroud and Stonehouse, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities. Plans for this year See page 11 for details of our Bournemouth Male Voice Choir Tour. Supporting young people We run a number of competitions in conjunction with local primary and secondary schools:- Rotary Young Musician Ð We encourage talented young people to demonstrate their musical skills by performing for a large audience and we are inspired by the entrantsÕ ability. Supporting Polio Eradication Nailsworth is just one of 1,800 Rotary Clubs throughout the UK, and 32,000 clubs worldwide. e purpose of Rotary is to bring people together to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Every Rotary club supports End Polio Now, the ght to eradicate polio worldwide, started in 1985 by the Rotary Foundation, World Health Organisation, and Unicef. It is now spearheaded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and by 2017 there were just 22 cases of polio worldwide. Polio is still endemic in Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and we need the funds to make the last push to wipe polio out completely. Having Fun Nailsworth Rotary has been twinned with the Rotary Club of Koper, in Slovenia for seven years. We visit them bi-annually, and in between they visit us. is year they enjoyed a visit to Woodchester Valley vineyard, a canal boat trip to Gloucester and a visit to the Morgan car factory. We also support KoperÕs work providing respite care for severely disabled children at the Red Cross centre. Between community service and fundraising, we have many social events, including a canal walk and beer and pizza at Stroud Brewery. We have organised weekends away in Ilfracombe, Tintagel and the Gower, and next year plan a weekend in Dorset. Last year, we visited the Morgan Factory in Malvern and the Law Courts in Bristol. Accessed from Horsley via Washpool and from Nailsworth via Ruskin Mill Cafe, itÕs a great route to and from Nailsworth, avoiding traffic on the main road. It is thanks to the generosity of Ruskin Mill College that the walk is open to the local community both in and out of term-time, as the previous owner of The Fisheries kept it private and closed to visitors. Dogs, on leads, are welcome with the usual proviso that you pick up after your pooch! It is, most importantly, a great environment for the students of the college as they are surrounded by nature in all its forms. The extensive and well- stocked gardens on either side of the walkway are beautifully laid out with a variety of colourful shrubs, flowers, fruit trees and vegetable plots, lovingly tended by resident gardeners; set against sparkling ponds, waterways and wooden cabins, in keeping with the surroundings. As you walk along the level, paved walkway, recently re-laid, water cascades from the stone water features placed alongside the netted ponds, where herons poise like statues to spot fish. The sound of water falling and gurgling from various features accompanies the entire walk and the huge ponds are now flanked by high wire fences to prevent Bells, Ribbons And Sticks Help keep the Morrismen tradition alive and kicking! Ragged & Old Morris have danced many times in and around Nailsworth and Horsley over the last twenty years, and are now recruiting dancers (women and men) to practise with us and prepare for the 2020 dancing season. If youÕve seen Morris dancing youÕll know itÕs vigorous, colourful and fun. No experience is necessary Ð some energy and enthusiasm is all thatÕs required! Fancy helping to keep one of our most distinctive traditions alive and kicking? We would particularly like to have people from Nailsworth to join us for a taster session on our regular practice night at one of the following venues (or better still, come to all three) and master your first Ragged & Old dance by the end of the evening! All along the route there are innovative sculptures made from various materials: some rising majestically from the water and others placed around the grounds. There are also seats along the path, where you can catch your breath and take in the beauty of the valley. The walk has something to see in all seasons and when you reach the Nailsworth end, treat yourself to lunch or afternoon tea at Ruskin Mill Cafe. The food is delicious and the view from the balcony looks back down the valley to where the water curves away into the distance. If youÕre new to the area, donÕt take my word for it, check it out for yourself! Win has been a resident at The Steppes in Nailsworth for over five years. All the arrangements for the occasion were made by her daughter Brenda, and an excellent lunch at The Britannia Inn was enjoyed by all, followed by birthday cake, made by Sue from The Steppes. Win was thrilled to receive a personally signed card from the Queen, which now takes pride of place in her room. The four youngest great grandchildren were permitted a day off school to attend such a special occasion. Win was born in Southwark. An only child, her family lived in three ground floor rooms of a rented house. The toilet was in the yard, a tin bath used in the kitchen once a week on bath night and the weekly rent was nine shillings (45p). Win left school at 14 and worked at Spicers factory, earning nine and sixpence per week, giving six shillings of that to her Mother as her father was crippled following an unsuccessful hip operation. Win and Bert married in 1941 and moved to Lancing in Sussex when Bert was demobbed in 1946. Their son Alan was born in 1948, followed by Brenda in 1949 and in 1956 they moved to London to be nearer to her parents. In 1982 Win and Bert retired to Westbury on Trym. Brenda and her family moved to Nailsworth in 1983 for her husbandÕs work and after Bert died in 1991, Win moved to sheltered housing in Bishopston: a first floor flat without a lift. It became increasingly difficult for Win to cope, and in 2014 she decided to move somewhere to be looked after. Her son Alan had died in 2007 so a move to Nailsworth was the only sensible option. Win has clearly spent much of her long life caring for her family. During her time at The Steppes she will have found time to reflect on the past, whilst enjoying the comfort, care and attention from staff she so richly deserves. At the Steppes she is in good hands. For many years GCC has failed to invest in these properties, now considered unfit for provision of Adult Social Care to the standard expected in 2019. County Councillors spoke against the closure at the Cabinet meeting where the decision was taken. Unfortunately, the closure order went ahead. The decision will result in great difficulty for residents, their families and staff as new accommodation is sought. 20mph Zone for Nailsworth Recently this much discussed scheme progressed, when, from our small Highways budget, speed monitoring equipment was installed for seven days at five locations around the town. These included the bends above Harley Wood, currently 40mph. All results fell within the mean speed to implement a 20mph zone and also a 30mph limit at Harley Wood and over the coming months we will liaise with HighwaysÕ Officers about the introduction of these new limits. I would like to thank the Mayor and other members of the A46 Group for the work they have carried out. Overgrown Hedges Thanks are extended to those residents who have cut their hedges back to their boundaries and a reminder to other residents that overgrown hedges which impede the roads or pathways cause a problem for mums with pushchairs, wheelchair users and those with sight problems. It would be appreciated it if residents would co-operate as this is the subject of most complaints received. Cllr Steve Robinson 834270 steve. robinson@gloucestershire.gov.uk District CouncillorsÕ Report MUGA at Lawnside Concerns were expressed by local residents when SDC announced the possible closure of the Multi Use Games Area at Lawnside. The problem is that itÕs so well used that the fencing is not longer fit for purpose. A residentÕs complaint of excessive noise from balls hitting the fencing was found to be justified. When the MUGA was built 12years ago, SDC failed to make provision for future repairs or replacement. To enable the MUGA to remain open, District Councillors have been locking it at 9pm and unlocking it at 9am each day, but this action is not sustainable. District Councillors have been liaising with SDC to find a way of retaining this much needed facility. Budding Artists flourish Reception Class and Year 1 hosted an art exhibition at St. GeorgeÕs Church in July with the help of Reverend Caroline and the Church community and the quality of the artwork produced was breath-taking and testament to the wide curriculum at school. The school choir entertained visitors and if you missed it, the art work can still be viewed in the church. A fond Farewell The excitement of summer is always tinged with sadness as we say goodbye to our Year 6 cohort. Year 6 pupils have been a joy to have in school: amazing role models and full of fun. They put on an amazing performance of ÒLet LooseÓ in the last week of term. It was a hilarious performance based on a fictional account of their weekÕs residential visit to an Activity Centre . As part of the Aged Veterans Fund, funded by the Chancellor using LIBOR funds, the partnership can provide specific support to those, born before 1950, who served in the British Armed forces or completed National Service. Together, we can provide tailor made person centred veteran support, providing benefits and income to which they are entitled, for a safe and comfortable later life. We can also ensure our veterans have their service medals, veteransÕ badges and in some cases provide specific SSAFA casework for grants to provide household or disability essentials. We are aiming to link isolated veterans with local clubs to enable connection with lost comrades, enabling the forces camaraderie to be recreated. Age UK nationally also offer a free telephone friendship service ÒCall in timeÓ, to link isolated veterans to one another for a friendly weekly chat. Age UK are also producing a regular Joining Forces newsletter, accessed by signing up on the Age UK website: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/informationadvice/ joining-forces/ For further information or to make a referral please contact: Age UK Gloucestershire on 01452 422660 enquiries@ageukgloucestershire.org.uk www.ageukgloucestershire.org.uk The ÒDoorÓ Project Seeks Volunteers The daily headlines continue to highlight the increase in mental health problems for young people, especially those aged 11 to 18. Many cite theories about the cause of this increase with a range of opinions. However, what they all agree is that the situation is escalating and that the statutory bodies are struggling to cope. They are increasingly having to rely on the Third Sector and charities to help and this is where The Door comes in, and potentially where you can help us make a difference. In many cases, for both young people or parents, having someone they can talk to may mean the difference between coping or not. In the first three months of this year we saw an 80% increase in applications for support, so we are looking to recruit more volunteer mentors to help support those young people and their parents when they need it most. Not sure if you are right for the role? Just talk to us. Full training and ongoing support is given. You might even find it the most rewarding thing you have ever done - many of our existing mentors say it is. John who has been volunteering at The Door for the last 2 years said: ÒI love being a volunteer. I enjoy giving young people a chance to make life better for themselves, Teaching them tools for living in todayÕs world. The rest is up to them.Ó A great place to work ... Shops, offices, factory units sometimes available Give us a call on 01453 832754 email: james@eachamberlain.co.uk www.eachamberlain.co.uk Nailsworth Mills Estate If you would like to join The DoorÕs award-winning team of Volunteer Mentors and help us provide a safe space, listening ear and positive role model for a vulnerable young person or parent please give Alistair or Shona a call on 01453 756745 for an informal chat with absolutely no obligation. Alternatively if you are ready to Ôsign on the dotted lineÕ visit thedoor.org.uk/ volunteer and download the application form today. They have been very busy over the last 12 months and hereÕs a fl avour of some of their activities. Most recently they held Soccer camps for 4 - 14 year olds of all abilities at Archway and Rednock Schools, run by ex-player Rob Sinclair and his team. I sometimes man the welcome desk, although I do like to join in occasionally! FGR community also have an Educational Scheme, FIT2LAST: groups from schools, scouts, sports clubs, charities and community organisations can come in for a session at FGR and an Eco-tour or alternatively, we can go to them. The groups enjoy a variety of tasks and fun learning exercises all about the ethos of FGR, sustainability, health and wellbeing, club history and of course football. We also have cooking, matchday, food sessions, when participants learn how to cook, host and cater for large groups. For example, my school, Rednock, on the last couple of weeks of the summer term, fed FGR Academy, Nailsworth Primary and an Adventure group from GL11 project. FGR community also hosted a photography group that exhibited at the Festival of Nature as well as supporting grassroots girls football.
