OCTOBER 2019 NO. 195 A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www.nailsworth news.org.uk Nailsworth In Bloom - Souvenir Issue You all know about it: the Gold Award! We decided this needed something special, so we have four centre pages all in colour, which can be pulled out and kept as a souvenir. We have pictures of displays around the town on page 11, but the main purpose of this was to say more about why it was done, how it was done, and who did it. Thus, our pictures on the centre pages are about that; they show the range of young and old working towards the common purpose. Inspirations On page 14 we have a different slant. We have something about the Woodchester Valley Village entry to the In Your Neighbourhood section of the national competition, as well as two examples of art and craft work inspired by the Nailsworth in Bloom displays. Collaboration as a theme The central theme to all this is collaboration between people and organisations in this town to achieve something special. Even our own special feature involved collaboration with Nailsworth in Bloom, our own Editorial Team, and all three of our Layout Designers. Who knows what this town could do about other things if we all put our minds to it? The Future The true test of this is going to be how this transformation of our town is sustained in the years to come. We at Nailsworth News will continue to do what we can to support this venture and others like it. From The Editorial Team The NN need a Business Editor to report on new ventures, outlets and businesses emerging in our town. Whilst existing editorial staff currently follow up on any new business advertisements commissioned, we need someone in the know about local businesses: someone who can generate leads and write editorials on emerging ventures or changes to existing business outlets in the town. The NN is keen to keep its readers informed of what is happening in Nailsworths ever expanding business community. If you have an ear to the ground locally and would like to join our small band of volunteers as a Business Editor, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact David Cox by email at treasurer@nailsworthnews.org.uk or telephone 07753 608917 for an informal chat.. Nailsworths WWII Veterans Everybody in Nailsworth has seen the plaques on the houses, where soldiers of the First World War, who had died in that terrible war, had lived. This wonderful work to commemorate their sacrifice, had been done by Mike Harvey, who received an award from the Mayor for his dedicated work. In July we reported on Mikes new venture to do the same for the men and women who died in the Second World War. Plaques cost approximately 35 and examples can be seen around town. However, further records of casualties have been found, but Mike has run out of money to do this. In order to complete this work we ask again for contributions to a fund to cover the shortfall. If you feel able to contribute, send or hand in a cheque, however small, to the Nailsworth Council Archive Fund at the Town Council Offices next to the Library. Since our appeal in July Mike has received hardly any further donations, so we ask readers to make further donations as soon as possible. Boring but we have to say it... The cycle track has a 20 year history and is part of the National Cycle Network. The track follows the route of the railway line to Stroud and Stone- house and should be a really important route for people travelling between Nailsworth, Stroud and Stonehouse. To begin with, the track will be resurfaced (or to be more honest, surfaced for the first time!) from Nailsworth to Woodchester. The surface will be a hard wearing rubberised compound, more comfortable to ride on and whilst the work is carried out there will be closures of the track. In order to get the funding for this work, the track will be designated as a Bridleway. Whilst this will mean horses can use it, it is not expected that the number of horse riders on the route will increase. Silver Band Congratulations to Nailsworth Silver Band, who contested the National Championship of Great Britain (Fourth Section Final) and were ranked 11th. A great performance for a band from a small town in the southern Cotswolds. I had the privilege of travelling to France with the band in May this year, for the twinning event, and was very impressed with their musicianship and sense of fun. As anyone who plays an instrument in a band or orchestra knows, huge dedication and commitment is required. We should be proud of our Silver Band, well done! Post Office We are very disappointed that it is proposed to reduce the opening hours of the Post Office in Tesco. The Post Office is a critical service for the community and when it moved into Tesco, with extended opening hours, it was fantastic news for Nailsworth. Our last bank has closed and the Post Office is a lifeline for those who need access to some banking services, but have no transport. Many of our small businesses rely on the banking services and can only access them out of normal hours. We are talking with Tesco regarding this worrying proposal. It appears we have been very slow at adapting to modern car park management systems, such as ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). We believe most supermarkets in the area have long been using this system, which simply allows people to carry on using the car park as normal for up to 2 hours. It has become increasingly diffi cult to recruit those marvellous men such as Roy Close, who many will remember. Roy, amongst many other skills, was a cricket umpire and his brief was to be fi rm but fair, just as on the fi eld of play. Unfortunately, in recent times, car-park staff have endured increasing levels of grief from a very small percentage of the public, who think rules and guidelines dont apply to them. As the cameras and issuing of parking tickets will be the responsibility of Euro Car Parks, they will be the point of contact should there be any questions. Suitable signage will be erected in the car park giving advance warning of this change along with the relevant contact telephone number. We look forward to a smooth transition this autumn, continuing to give shoppers the opportunity to use the wonderful retail outlets we have in Nailsworth. Let us all continue to work for FREE car parking in Nailsworth. James Chamberlain, Nailsworth Mill Estate LOCAL NEWS Work began in June on the modernisation of the communal areas of Concord in Nailsworth and is expected to be complete in early October, in time for the 50th anniversary party being planned by the residents. Meanwhile the new building at Tanners Piece in Nailsworth was completed on schedule in June, with the creation of 11 modern apartments for older people, replacing the 8 PRC bungalows on the site. The completion of Tanners piece leaves Ringfi eld Close available for development and a planning submission for the development of affordable housing on this site, managed by the Council, has been put forward. Finally, in September, SDCs plan for Health and Wellbeing was completed by a team of offi cers led by Emma Keating Clark, the Health and Wellbeing Development Coordinator. The Plan sets the next steps for supporting integration amongst our housing communities and neighbourhoods through partnerships (2019-2020). The Health and Wellbeing partnership works with 190 organisations, connecting childrens welfare, senior residents, mental health, walking and cycling. As the leaves change colour, it reminds me that there is still some predictability in our climate and this is how God intended the seasons to be. Its been a good year for arable farmers, and now we celebrate the harvest. In our churches and schools, we will give thanks to God, sing harvest songs and come together in church to enjoy harvest festival meals. We celebrate the harvest of crops and of the food that we are blessed to eat, but as we give thanks, we also remember those that have little or no harvest, those who have little to eat. At harvest time, the food bank becomes fuller from donations from harvest services and festivals. Jesus said, love your neighbour as yourself and we remember that our giving is part of loving our neighbour. As we look around the world, we see rising temperatures affecting the harvest, natural disasters, fl ooding and drought, meaning little or no harvest, no food to eat. We also see peoples lives being devastated through the loss of homes and all they have, as well as the loss of loved ones. We give thanks for the seasons and pray that there will be stability in our changing climate: something that we should all be aware of; maybe you are already thinking of ways that you can adjust your lifestyle to help the sustainability of our beautiful world. As Autumn draws in and we see the changing season appear, may it remind all of us of the need to care for our world and love our neighbour. Rev. Of course, I searched for Nailsworth and found a wonderful Stroud valleys map from 1825. On closer inspection, I found a place here in Nailsworth called Winds Ass. Yep! Apparently we now know it as Windsorash. Intrigued, I did what anyone would do and Googled it. This took me to an article about the building of the turnpike roads in the Stroud area in the 1780s www.gsia.org.uk/ reprints/197921.pdf Apparently, in the original document Windsorash is named as The Winds Arse! An article, written by Betty Mills, suggests that Windsorash and Windsoredge were at one time hunting grounds belonging to Henry VIII which, owing to their inconvenient locations, he exchanged for land at Windsor. I dont actually believe this, it smacks a little of the fabricated Bisley Boy story. Id like to think that our predecessors were far more down to earth than us in their use of language and that perhaps our prudish Victorian forbears couldnt accept the naming of a local hamlet after such a questionable body part. I can envisage some newly appointed 19th century vicar encouraging the locals to adopt a more acceptable name for the area, much to their amusement. Im intrigued to know whether Windsoredge had a similar questionable origin, or perhaps Windsoredge was the inspiration for the renamed Windsorash? If anyone can add information to this little mystery Id be very grateful. You know that feeling in the evening, youre calm, maybe reading or watching TV and some insects wafting in and out of your eye-line, or theres the annoying buzz of wings by your ear. Well, thats exactly what our feelings do to us. Sometimes, taking a breath between tasks, or just slowing down, our emotions play at the edges of our minds. Just like those mosquitoes, they buzz around our heads, making us agitated and unable to think clearly, distracting us from our everyday lives, complete nuisances! Sometimes they bite us when we least expect it causing us to react in a manner that can surprise us, our friends, family and work colleagues. We try to remain calm and not get sucked in but it is diffi cult not to react and start scratching, then you just cant stop. Just like our emotions, you can get a bad thought in your head and continue to revisit it. making it more infl amed, creating further anxiety and a nasty red patch. We all do it, its a natural thing; designed to call us to action and save us from potential harm. But they can get out of control. Our emotional limbic system processes information much faster than our pre-frontal cortex, which cascades cortisol and adrenaline through our systems. This becomes exhausting as rational thinking gets put on the back burner. So, whilst its OK to react to a physical tangible danger, it is not as healthy for us to focus in so much detail on a past event, argument or sense of anxiety. Solution focused therapy helps clients make rational decisions, without needing to be high-jacked by our primitive brains and teaches us how to cope and deal with the various signals and sensations our brains receive. TOWN TWINNING Twinning Association In July, the Mayor of Lves, Remi Martial, invited our Mayor and his wife, together with a Twinning Association representative, to be part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the liberation of Levs. Sadly, Jonathan was unable to attend, so Steve and Liz Robinson went as his representatives and I attended for the Twinning Association. On 16th August, 1944, American front line troops reached Chartres, but were held up by pockets of German resistance. Other troops were some miles ahead and the order was given to destroy Chartres cathedral as it was thought German snipers were inside the building. The American commander, Colonel Griffiths, asked for a stay of the order to confirm the snipers presence: he was given just 20 minutes. He entered the cathedral alone, found no snipers, raised the Stars and Stripes and gave the order not to shell the cathedral; saving the building from imminent destruction. Two hours later, Colonel Griffiths embarked on a reconnaissance mission, on the back of a tank, to Lves and was killed by a German sniper. His aide de camp, Sergeant Eugene Schulz, was awarded The Legion dHoneur, the highest honour France can give, for his part in the liberation. The presentation on Friday 13th September was part of the celebrations and Eugene Schulz, now 96, attended with his wife and extended family, together with Colonel Griffiths grandson. Steve, Liz and I attended the investiture in the Prefecture. On Saturday 14th September a small parade of WW2 vehicles took the Griffiths and Schulz families to the spot where the commander was shot. A wreath was laid by the Griffiths family, followed by a walk to the town square, where further wreaths were laid, including one by Steve Robinson. Moving speeches followed: one by an elderly man, a boy at the time, who witnessed the Colonels death. National anthems of France, UK and the US ended the ceremony. A meal was shared by guests, under the trees and the day ended with the Schulz and Griffiths families poignant departure in old army vehicles. On Sunday 15th July we enjoyed the annual French Twinning Association BBQ and Boules match. In no particular order: Mr and Mrs Allan Wheeler, Nick Pearce, Nailsworth Town Council, RHS, Waitrose, National Lottery, Tesco, George Osmond Nursary, Highfield Garden World, Nailsworth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Nailsworth Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, Woodchester Valley Village, Joya, Coco, Nailsworth Climate Action Town, Brutons Hardware Store, Just Because, Gyles Allen and Claire Francis Hairdressers, Stroud Vintage transport and Engine Club, Nailsworth Garden Centre, K and G Newsagents, Truce, ESS Employment, Bottle Green and Nailsworth Chamber of Trade. Please forgive us if our list is incomplete! 11 Nailsworth in Bloom 2019 Gold Award on only second attempt. A story of collaboration across the community. Why was this done? Nailsworth in Blooms rationale was firstly to celebrate a love of plants, gardening and nature in its many forms and to bring people together into a closer community; secondly to make the town a brighter, cleaner place, promoting health and happiness as a result. More specific aims were to build on the success of their first years Silver Gilt award, to develop a positive relationship with the Town Council and to widen business participation. Clearly all these great aims were reliant on financial support and the project gained grants from the Big Lottery Fund, Waitrose Community and Tescos Good Causes. Combined with last years Growing our Communities grant from GCC, the project enjoyed a prosperous start to 2019. The Theme and how it was done This years theme, Wool and Water, focussed on the new town mural, the bus station area and a floral waterwheel to provide a town square feel. You will have seen reports of Nailsworth In Blooms progress in the NN each month. In 2018, from seed and plant collecting in August through to Remembrance Day in Novem ber, the team brandished watering cans, trowels and hoes with much vigour. In January this year the Mortimer Gardens develop ment began, and work continued with spring planting in February; fund-raising and discussions around creating a sensory garden in Market Street in March and new planters in April. In June the hand-crafted floral waterwheel was installed, constructed from recycled timber donated by Blue Diamond Garden Centre. Wooden planters made from Ring- field Close construction site materials by the NTC groundsman were filled with dye plants by the Guides, who also took part in a dyeing workshop with a local textile designer. Collaboration across the Community Young & Old Local awareness of the pro ject has seen Brownies planting hanging baskets, Scouts planting sunflower seeds, Rainbows planting in the Christ Church Garden and Youth Club stencilling pots and transforming the skate ramp in KGV playing field. The Nailsworth Scrubbers have also been hard at work. Awareness comes in many forms and the group are delighted to have the goodwill of the local PCSO and the support of the Town Council, winning this years Art award. So many people right across the Community working to a common theme. The future Work on a sensory garden in Market Street is ongoing, thanks to an RHS grant; help from The Dementia Friendly group and Councillors Mike Kelly and Sally Millett. In addition, help from the WI, keen to maintain a patch of garden to celebrate 100 years of the Gloucestershire federation of WIs. Next year the group plan to continue meetings with regular speakers and major gardening projects will include the regenera tion of soil in borders. Local fund- raising and grant applications will, of course, continue, together with the use of social media and the press, to communicate monthly objectives and progress. Nailsworth News would like to thank Nailsworth in Bloom for their help to produce this feature. Text by Heather Nicholls NN Editorial Team Photos courtesy of N in Bloom, and Carole de la Croix BLOOMING INSPIRATIONS BLOOMING INSPIRATIONS Woodchester Valley Village Britain in Bloom Results - Top Marks at the First Attempt This year, as suggested by last years judges, Woodchester Valley Village entered Its Your Neighbourhood, focusing on three key areas: Community Involvement, Environmental Responsibility and Gardening Achievement. On that wonderful July day, when the RHS judges came to town, they were very impressed with the gardens, the displays of knitted sheep and a catalogue of photos taken over the year showing each of these areas. We were absolutely delighted to be awarded Level Five Outstanding, for all the hard work by the gardening team plus all the residents who got involved, adding their own touches. The presentation will be made later in September by the RHS in Bloom team and work has already started for next year. Artsparks Stitching & Painting For Nailsworth In Bloom And Beyond. Residents from Woodchester Valley Village, Craddock Court and Hanover House, and members of Nailsworth Carers Group, spent many happy hours in art sessions earlier this year, preparing work for the Nailsworth In Bloom festival. Two large floral appliqu pieces were displayed in the library foyer during the festival in August, together with a selection of framed watercolours and collages at shop venues around town. The project was funded with grants from Thriving Communities, Gloucestershire County Council and the Rotary Club. Participants learned new skills in drawing, painting and textiles, with the opportunity of a good chinwag at the same time! The work will now be displayed permanently at the residents homes, and an extension of the project is underway for 2019 20. Aided by a further County Council grant, the existing participants are already branching out into printing techniques and embroidery, with a view to showing work at Woodchester Mansion during the Stroud Valleys Open Studios next spring. The project is run by Artsparks, a local team of two artists specialising in workshops for all ages and abilities, particularly as a vehicle for drawing communities together. The team is always keen to welcome new participants who might otherwise find it hard to access art workshops and art spaces, so if you would like to find out more, contact Liz Lancashire on 07407 115043 to chat through your requirements. Jan gets Inspired Jan Rice of Shortwood took a walk around town to take photos of the floral displays, and was so inspired, she rushed home and did this drawing. NN felt that we should share this with our readers. 14 LOCAL NEWS LOCAL NEWS News From Nailsworth/Vumilia Link The link of friendship between Nailsworth and the Tanzanian village of Vumilia spans nine years. Three visits have been made, and in between its heart- warming to keep in touch by telephone. Mobile phones are now relatively cheap in Tanzania and networks are expanding. Fortunately Augustin, our link man in Vumilia, a retired teacher, speaks good English in contrast to our smatterings of Kiswahili. Augustin reports that this year the rains have been very sparse and the crops, have been poor. Vumilia lies on the arid central plateau of Tanzania near Tabora and endures a long dry season, but now it seems climate change is causing increasing drought and hunger. Although, the water borehole completed in 2016, financed with help from Nailsworth, is a great help at this time. We continue to support children and young people at schools and colleges and are very grateful to those Nailsworth friends who regularly donate to make this possible. Though the government provides free primary and now free secondary schooling, we finance grants for books; uniform and solar lights (to help with homework). Eleven young people from Vumilia are sponsored on apprenticeship courses at the nearby Folk Development College and five at A level colleges. Three classrooms with cracked floors and crumbling walls, have been transformed into pleasant learning spaces and we would love to refurbish the other five classrooms and two offices to the same standard. To finance this we need some serious fundraising ideas. Our AGM will be held at 7pm on Thursday 17th October at the Friends Meeting House. Nailsworths vicar, the Rev. Caroline Bland will share insights and pictures of her visit to the Diocese of Western Tanganyika, Tanzania, which lies west of Vumilia. Please join us, there will be coffee/ tea and cake. We thank all of the families who joined us, all of those talented folk who ran a workshop and our catering team. You all made the weekend so very special. This term we will be adding two brand new sessions to our week. On Monday afternoons we offer hands on art, sensory and messy play; exploring stories through adventurous play (ages 2-4) and Wednesday afternoons a gentle Lullaby session for under 1s sharing singing, music and sensory play. The Playcircle Team, www.playcircle.co.uk 16 SCHOOLS SCHOOLS Nailsworth Primary School Pupils returned to school in the first week of September and on Monday morning Year 6 left for a residential week in the Brecon Beacons: paddle- boarding on Llangorse Lake and learning bush-craft skills at a remote lakeside camp. Read more about their amazing adventures in Octobers Nailsworth News. We also welcomed our new reception class. They have settled into school beautifully and are already enjoying learning and making new friends. The best thing since sliced bread! Baking was on the curriculum for Year 2 last week, working with the school kitchen to help devise a healthy school lunch box as an alternative to hot school dinners. Before trialling sandwich fillings they had to bake the bread and judging from the aroma from the kitchen, the school sandwiches will be a great success. Gardening club is a popular activity and three hardworking members of the club, Alfie, Rhys and Jacob, attended Nailsworth in Bloom. Rhys explained to one of the judges that Year 3 grew their own potatoes, boiled them in the cookery room and shared them during our science lesson, whilst Jacob recounted exactly how our vegetables were cultivated and the environmentally-friendly measures taken to avoid pests. Nailsworth Fireworks An important date for your diaries, our spectacular fireworks evening will be on Friday 8th November at Nailsworth Primary School. Gates open at 5.30pm with a bar and BBQ with delicious local sausages and veggie options. All proceeds go directly to the children of Nailsworth Primary School, so wrap up warm, support a great cause and come along to enjoy the show. We do advise buying tickets in advance, they will be available from the end of October from Nailsworth Town Information Centre (in the library) or from the school office. 17 Contact us to arrange a visit or quote Call: 07904058866 Email: sales@myvillagehandymanstroud.com Web: www.myvillagehandymanstroud.com SCHOOLS SCHOOLS Acorn School Were delighted to be opening two new classes and welcoming new teachers and children to our school. At the end of last term annual summer camps and exciting projects took place: our youngest children went on a camping trip spending time walking, cooking on a campfire and sleeping in tents. Whilst older children set off for the Pembrokeshire coast for an exciting week of camping, surfing, rock climbing and coasteering. With help from woodwork teacher, Mark, our lower school children contributed to Nailsworth in Bloom: a wooden butterfly houses flowers grown from seeds, insect hotels and natural beehives and wooden lambs were made for the local area. We said farewell to graduates starting university, travelling on their gap years or stepping into new careers and wished them all the best of luck. The youngest children were in for an extra special treat, for whilst they were enjoying their summer holidays, staff back at base were busy making all manner of changes inside and outside the school buildings. We have made changes within the school. The Nursery (for children aged three to four) has moved into a bright, interactive new space with an outdoor classroom and its own creative room for arts, crafts and more. Reception classes now enjoy a wonderfully free-flow, child-centred, learning experience enhanced by direct joint access to their own outside area and from there into two dedicated Forest School zones. Every classroom now has its own interactive board and every corner sports a new role play area, teaching tool or toy. A reminder to readers that the annual Autumn Fair charity shopping event, takes place in school on Saturday 12th October, this year in aid of Mind (Gloucestershire and Swindon) and the next school open morning is on Friday 18th October. www.beaudesert.gloucs.sch.uk Your Local Health Food Shop 11 Fountain Street, Nailsworth 01453 832986 www.shinygoodness.co.uk Simply bring in your empty detergent bottles and have them refilled. There are 100 different types of dementia and 850,000 people living in the UK with the condition. The Nailsworth DAA, the first in Stroud District, grew out of the dementia friendly Nailsworth group which began in November 2016. There is a long standing DAA in The Forest of Dean and an emerging one in Gloucester City. Prices Mill surgery is one of the members of the local DAA. Each member decides on its own action plans and the DAA monitors their progress.
