Also we would like to thank the local Police and the Rotary Club for assisting in the Parade, all the youth organisations who were so well turned out and last but by no means least, Jane Luff from Daisy Jane in George Street and Margaret Marshall, along with her Army of knitters, for their drive and enthusiasm which has been outstanding. I wonÕt say any more than that. Christmas It is a few weeks until the 25th December, so IÕd like to wish everyone a very good Christmas and New Year. Nailsworth is a great little town and IÕd encourage everyone to think local when shopping for Christmas. A little spent in the town goes a long way for our shops, pubs and restaurants, so letÕs give them a great finish to the year. Pete Reed Most of you will have heard that Pete had a spinal stroke recently. He is currently undergoing physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Pete is an amazing athlete and over the years has given so much for his sport and country. He also has never forgotten his roots here in Nailsworth and is a wonderful representative of the town. We wish him well. Pete is very moved by all the messages of goodwill he has received from the Town and thanks everyone for their concern and wishes. Council budget By the time this paper reaches your letter boxes Nailsworth Town Council will have considered the budget for next year. It is likely that there will be a modest increase in the precept, with additional pressures on expenditure and activity. IÕll report in more detail in February, when the budget has been formally set. Norman Kay 833458: Steve Robinson 834270; Sue Reed 833472 Cotswold Voluntary Wardens We welcome the opportunity to explain what a group of mostly (but definitely not exclusively!) silver generation ancients get up to on the extensive network of public rights of way of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty including those within the Nailsworth parish, but where to start? The Cotswolds Conservation Board, an independent statutory body, works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Cotswolds AONB, to increase understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities and foster the social and economic well-being of local communities. The CCB, established by Parliamentary Order in 2004, has 37 members, a staff team of 16 supported by more than 300 voluntary wardens working throughout the AONB. The voluntary wardens are what this piece is all about. The AONB is split into five administered districts, under the overall direction of the Conservation Board. Nailsworth falls within the South district, which roughly is all points south of the A419 through Stroud and north of the Wiltshire/Bath/ NE Somerset border. Voluntary wardens patrol, organise walks and help maintain the public rights of way, footpaths and bridleways, liaising and working with parish councils and other organisations such as the National Trust and Woodlands Trust. Wardens have no enforcement powers and can only report instances of wilful obstruction, neglect or other abuse of designated rights of way. Key activities are: ¥ Parish patrolling by occasional checking of paths and bridleways so that these remain as accessible as possible including simple maintenance, eg: cutting back brambles etc. ¥ Work parties to clear extensive overgrowth, repair worn paths and repair or replace stiles, kissing gates, dry stone walls, etc. though this is always subject to funds being available for materials from local councils or landowners. More recent work in the Nailsworth area has included the paths at the top of Forest Green near the football ground and in Box Wood. ¥ Guided walks for anyone who prefers the peace of mind of an organised route as well as social banter during walks. Recent local walks include one from Horsley via Hazel Wood, Egypt Mill, Dunkirk Mill, Prices Mill, Giggs Mill and Ruskin Mill along the scenic footpath created by Ruskin Mill. One warden describes these activities as the Ôgreen gymÕ - wardens need to be fit and the exercise from a full morningÕs walk or work party is one of the better ways of achieving this. Several of the Wardens are in their 80Õs! No expensive static cycles or tread mills for a Cotswold Voluntary Warden just the clean open air and superb local countryside. For further information on how to volunteer and for the current programme of guided walks (new programme due from 1st January 2020 should appear soon) have a peek at the website https://www.cotswoldsaonb. org.uk/ Chris Gill Ð Cotswold Voluntary Warden and Nailsworth resident/Parish patroller ........... ............................................... .......................................... ......................... ..... ..... ..... ...... ......... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ........................................ ........................ e: mjwebbroofing@gmail.com Alter - Adapt - Extend - Convert - Design Planning and Building Regulations Domestic and Commercial Kevin Kendal MCIAT: 07891 883131 info@kendalarchitecture.co.uk Kendal architecture 4 Being a local company, we employ local people who are masterful in their field and passionate about the service they offer to their clients. GCC has been overwhelmed, due to people with nonvisible conditions now being eligible for a Blue Badge. I was contacted by a local resident, who missed the deadline for renewing his badge, whilst on holiday. He was told he would have to wait three months for a replacement and his current badge would, meanwhile, be invalid. GCC have now granted 3 months grace to badge holders until the backlog is sorted. SDC, who are responsible for car parks in the Stroud district, have agreed to do the same. My thanks to the resident for bringing this issue to my attention. Plans for the Roundabout The infamous mini roundabout by the clock tower in Nailsworth has, for many years, been the topic of discussion between local individuals and on social media. Many drivers fail to use it as the Highway Code suggests and the situation was not helped when two years ago the road was resurfaced, placing the Give Way markings further back than previously. Some people will remember that when the road was re-surfaced, a prankster placed cones in the middle of the roundabout. In fact, this helped considerably, as cars had to go round the cones, allowing several vehicles to use the roundabout simultaneously. County Councillors must listen to and attempt to act on the concerns of residents. We have a small Highways Budget, shared between the parishes of the Nailsworth Division and earlier this year a feasibility study was commissioned. The plan includes moving the zebra crossing closer to the roundabout. I am aware that there have been numerous near misses between pedestrians and vehicles on the crossing and the authorities feel this problem is mainly due to vehicles coming out of George Street, looking towards Stroud, and then suddenly fi nding someone on the crossing. With regard to the roundabout, a slight hump in its centre would be necessary, to allow large vehicles from the Stroud direction to turn right into Spring Hill. Obtaining funding for this project at this busy road junction will be my next challenge. Please feel free to contact me regarding the project. A copy of the plans will be made available at the Nailsworth Civic Centre. Steve Robinson County Councillor for the Nailsworth Division steve.robinson@gloucestershire.gov.uk 834270 What a pleasure it is to walk on the newly-surfaced Ômulti-useÕ path. And what a relief to see that it has been called by that name on the signs advertising its transformation. For years we have called it Ôthe cycle trackÕ because its actual name as a ÔPedestrian and cycle trackÕ does not exactly roll off the tongue. It has, however, been a contentious issue at times when one group or another has (often loudly) claimed it as theirs. Cyclists do use it, but they are not the only ones. Joggers, dog walkers, toddlers, school children , the very young and the elderly are regular users and all have equal rights. Would it be a good idea to change the name? LetÕs call it something which refl ects its variety of users. ÔCommunity pathÕ or ÔWild-life trailÕ could be possibilities, but again quite a mouthful. LETÕS HAVE A COMPETITION and choose something appropriate. My entry (a bit tongue in cheek) might be the Ôall-people pathÕ as these days ÔappsÕ are very popular!! JB C H U R C H & F A I T H CHURCH & FAITH Church Letter This time last year, I was preparing to move to take the role of Vicar of St GeorgeÕs and the Nailsworth Benefice. Since my licencing in January, the months have gone so quickly and as I look back over the year, there has been much change, much that has been new. It has been a joy meeting so many people and getting to know the Nailsworth community. In December and the Advent season, I Imagine there will be much time spent preparing for Christmas, thinking about and shopping for gifts and decorations, of hospitality, food and drink, planning celebrations and gatherings with family and friends. I wonder what this year has been like for you and what has happened in your life over the last 12 months? For some it will have been a good year, but sadly, not so good for others. Life doesnÕt always seem fair, and maybe you feel that this year, for whatever reason, it is difficult to look forward to Christmas. For Christians, Advent, the four weeks leading to Christmas is a time when we are mindful of preparation, but it is a season to step outside those preparations, from buying gifts, preparing for Christmas Day, to focus on the gift of Jesus. As we prepare, it is also a time to stop and think about our own lives, to reflect on the year, whatever it has brought; a time of pondering; a time of waiting; of preparation for the birth of the Jesus, who came to change the world and give us hope for the future. Advent is primarily a time for preparing our hearts so that we might become open to the wonder of what it is that we are waiting for Ð the coming of Jesus Christ, the coming of hope, of love, of peace and joy. Then we come to Christmas, celebrate the joy of the birth of Jesus! If you want to make Christmas special, and remember what itÕs all about, you will receive a warm welcome at St GeorgeÕs Church or Christ Church to our Christmas events or services. Looking then to January, when all the festivities of Christmas are over, remember that Jesus is still with us and the churches are always welcoming. Rev. For details on all our sessions, please visit www.playcircle.co.uk We moved to Nailsworth in 1984 and the reaction amongst some people we met was along the lines of Ôpoor you, I suppose someone has to live thereÕ. Well the last laugh is defi nitely with us. To live in Nailsworth is a bonus; a town which has everything and accepts all sorts and treats them with respect. My husband was diagnosed with dementia about seven years ago and the help that has been forthcoming has been incredible. It is still important for him to be able to carry out certain tasks, such as collecting the newspaper every morning and I know that if he gets lost or confused, which has happened recently, there are shop-workers who know him and will look after him. It is small things like this that make a huge difference to our lives. We are also fortunate to have an Alzheimer cafŽ and Dementia walks where both client and carer can meet others in a similar position and to know that we are not alone. In addition for us, as regular attenders of St. GeorgeÕs, it is wonderful to have our Ôother familyÕ to support us. So thank you Nailsworth Ð you are Ômy kind of townÕ! Clare Jayes B U S I N E S S N E W S Woodchester Valley Vineyard We are an award- winning boutique vineyard located in the Five Valleys and as the festive season approaches, we are delighted to share exciting news. We are the first English vineyard to win a Gold Medal for Sauvignon Blanc at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2019, ranking with some of the finest wines in the world. In addition, a Gold Medal was awarded by WineGBWest for our 2018 Bacchus wine considered the quintessential English wine. We produce a full selection of white, red, rosŽ and traditional method sparkling wines. Founder Fiona Shiner and husband Niall grew up in Gloucestershire, returning after 18 years living in Hong Kong. As a solicitor, Fiona had heard of the nearby Stonehouse vineyard mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and in 2007 just one acre of vines was planted as an experiment, now three sites, Amberley, Woodchester and Stonehouse: fifty six acres of vines on limestone slopes. Grape varieties planted include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bacchus. After developing her skills with viticulture and wine-making courses, Fiona is very hands-on, working in the fields, driving the tractor or conducting tours. In 2016 the winery facility was built, and Jeremy Mount, a highly skilled winemaker, joined having worked in the wine growing regions of France, Germany, South Africa, California and New Zealand. The youth and excitement of the rapidly growing UK wine industry intrigues Jeremy and he finds the variability of the English climate a challenge. The article was prompted by the discovery of a stash of bottles from the old Brewery, which had been owned by the Clissold family. The Nailsworth Brewery was established by the Clissold family in 1800 and W.G. Clissold became a leading figure in the town. They were non-conformists, so it was an unusual business to be involved with; such people were often teetotal. It appears that they sold the business in 1908 on religious grounds, and was subsequently closed by the new owners, another Brewery. REMEMBRANCE & ARTS REMEMBRANCE & ARTS Stuart Singers in Holland The Stuart Singers travelled to Holland recently to participate in a uniquely moving event. The 75th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of Venray in the Netherlands, took place over the weekend of 19th and 20th October. The choir, based in Minchinhampton, was invited by the organisers of the event to represent the UK at this prestigious and hugely important event. The choir sang for dignitaries and veterans at the British cemetery memorial service, where 693 soldiers are buried; performed in a special Concert for Freedom in the 600 seater theatre in Venray and shared the stage with Dutch and German choirs in another concert in a marquee with an audience of 450 people. The 45 choir members, under Musical Director Helen Sims, found this to be a very moving and poignant occasion just three weekends before we all remember the fallen in both World Wars and other conflicts. Run by Shireen Walton who has Masters degrees in Positive Psychology Coaching and Information Technology. The coaching is based on the science of Positive Psychology, which focusses on what makes people happy: pleasure, rapture or ecstasy. The second is about flow, living an engaged life, in which we use up all the cognitive and emotional resources that make up thought and feeling. The final is one of meaning and purpose, in which you serve something bigger than the self. Our route to living a good and happy life can be defined by our character strengths and virtues, defined as: honesty, temperance, love, hope, gratitude, loving kindness, leadership, teamwork, forgiveness and curiosity. Practicing regular interventions can enhance these character strengths and virtues. For example, being grateful has shown to have remarkable effects on our brainsÕ neurological wiring, helping us to live happier lives. Research shows that the practice of just one minute of mindfulness can act as a brain reset to everyday stresses. When faced with sudden life changes, psychologists ask clients to make the bed or wash up, mindfully focusing awareness on doing specific tasks to the best of an individualÕs ability. Miracleworks coaching encourages mindfulness and meditation by using Virtual Reality technology, used as an aid to help people who are already busy and stressed with daily life. Since opening the practice, results have been remarkable with children suffering from anxiety at school, couples overwhelmed with the complexity of managing family life to parents juggling businesses and families. It also works to improve sport performance and weight management. Coaching is also provided to those who want to become a coach. First sessions are free and coaching packages are available at discounted price. Nailsworth in Bloom have some exciting projects for the coming year, but desperately need volunteers to help with fund raising and gardening. Nailsworth Town is a large space for garden planning and maintenance. The town council pay for many of the plants and these are supplemented with plants purchased by the ÔIn BloomÕ group. Funding comes from grants and fund-raising events in the town; last year we were fortunate to be awarded a number of grants and the funds were used to benefi t the town. We will be applying for grants again next year as well as fundraising locally but it is always the same people organising and running the events. We desperately need fresh ideas and new faces! Could you give up a few hours of your time to help us fund raise? We also need additional help on the gardening front and without this help we are unlikely to enter Britain in Bloom. WeÕve had so many kind comments about how well we have done but gardening has predominately been carried out by two people - Liz and Sheila - aka a pair of old bloomers. They really need help, particularly in maintaining areas and troughs, watering, dead-heading and weeding. If you are able to spend even a little time every few days, or a couple of hours a week, that would be a great help. This inspired them to establish a branch of the Older Driver Forum in Gloucestershire to spread awareness on how to keep older motorists driving safely for longer but also, how to plan an alternative mobility strategy when itÕs time to retire from driving. The Older DriverÕs Forum is a not-for-profit, award winning organisation, founded in 2013 in Hampshire. On 4th December an inaugural public awareness event took place at the Stroud Brewery, London Road, Brimscombe, in the form of a presentation followed by a Q&A session: targeting family members and friends of older drivers, with concerns about their loved onesÕ driving and perhaps needing help on how to address this emotive subject. Older drivers were also very welcome to attend. No charge was made for the event, supported by Rotary in Nailsworth and the Stroud Brewery, but donations to fund ongoing O.D.F activities were invited. Further events are planned for next year. For further information on this initiative you can contact Alexandra Jones on 07718928907 or rotary@moredesign.co.uk. This new group is supported by Rotary in Nailsworth and Stroud Brewery www.olderdriversforum.com https://www.facebook/ ODFGLOUCESTERSHIRE CitizenÕs Advice Stroud and Cotswolds With Winter just around the corner heating our homes becomes an ever more constant worry for many of those in our communities. In order to help with some of the energy costs, the government allow a Winter Fuel Payment to every household with someone born before 5th April 1954 living there. The payments are tax free, not means-tested and paid to anyone who satisfies the criteria, irrespective of whether they work or not. Winter Fuel Payments are paid automatically to those who qualify between November and December by The Department for Work and Pensions; all payments are usually by 13th January the following year. If you think you are entitled to a payment and you do not receive one, contact the DWP before 31st March 2020. Cold Weather Payments are another form of government help with energy costs for those household living on low incomes. Payments are only paid to certain means-tested benefits claimants when the average temperature of zero degrees or below lasts for seven consecutive days in any period from 1st November to 31st March. The Payments of £25 for any qualifying period are triggered automatically by The Department for Work and Pensions. If you would like any further information about these issues or any other matter, please contact Citizens Advice on confidential freephone 0808 800 0510. Over this last year we have been celebrating 60 years in Stroud: Can you help us find 60 new donors for your local charity? An annual pledge of £5 per month can make a real difference. Please phone us on Freephone 0808 800 0510 for the necessary forms. Thank you. Nigglesworth Drivers in the town need be aware of the markings on the road near the bottom of Springhill, it says KEEP CLEAR and not GIVE WAY. In one week, I had three cars pull straight out from the town onto the hill as I was coming up and I had to break suddenly. Mornings as I queue down the hill, so many cars pull out from the town, sometimes without even looking down the road, nearly causing an accident. You do not have right away! Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help This year we changed our publication dates to the fi rst Friday of every month. It has meant that in some months we actually distribute at the start of the second week. The effect of this is that if you want us to publish information or an article on an event then you need to let us know two months before the event to give readers plenty of time to plan and buy tickets, particularly if the event is in the fi rst week of the month. NN strives to feature your events and articles in NN, so we do need to receive them by the 15th of the month, for insertion in the following monthÕs magazine, either in our Whats On pages or in the main paper. There is one exception in 2020, as the February issue comes out on Friday 31st Jan Thank you for your continued support. We love to hear from you, so please keep those articles and entries coming! The Editorial Team This year Longfi eld Community Hospice will once again run their Christmas Tree Recycling Campaign. Leave the effort of getting rid of your Christmas tree in the New Year to Longfi eld Community Hospice! Longfi eld, along with over 20 other hospices in the UK, will collect real Christmas Trees from your home for a donation to their local hospice. This will be done over a fi ve day period from Thursday 9th January until Monday 13th January 2020. So while youÕre going to Midnight Mass, toasting the Queen, or tucking into your Christmas turkey, our nurses will be in peopleÕs homes, supporting them when they need it most. Longfi eld provides this specialist support every day of the year, night and day, and itÕs provided completely free of charge. So please be generous in donating to Longfi eld Communty Hospice this Christmas, because weÕre providing vital services in your community (as well as collecting your Christmas tree in the New Year!)
