We will miss Helen, and the whole of the team wish her the best for the future. The good news is that we have found someone to take on Helen ’s role and details will follow in next month ’s issue. I received over 200 positive responses. I am scrutinising these and sorting them ready to discuss with Highways. I will then have to persuade the Highways Department to include the preferred scheme into a future programme. It could be funded from a ‘106 ’ if a major development takes place in the town. 20 mph Zone - First of all, I would like to thank Cllr Jonathan Duckworth, Les Haines and Mike Harvey for their contributions over many years working on this project. As residents will know, we have held several consultations, both in the Nailsworth News and on market days, and we are moving forward at a steady pace. Much of the parish will be included in the 20mph zone which should reduce the amount of signage needed. Unfortunately, Highways is still reluctant to extend the bends on the A46 above Harley Wood to a mandatory 30mph. A meeting is being arranged with Road Safety Offi cers and the County Police to persuade them to include this in the Traffi c Regulation Order. As from April the Police and Crime Panel has agreed for the precept for Gloucestershire Police to be increased by 2.7% - Central Government would have allowed up to 4%. For all of us blessed with a head of hair that needs regular attention, we know how true that statement is. Jeremy, owner of Gyles Allen on Market Street, goes even further when asked to describe how he feels about his business; he claims being a hairdresser is a privilege as he gets to be a small part of so many peoples lives. Over the last 30 years, up to four generations of the same families have been coming to sit in one of his chairs to chat, listen to his famously diverse choice of music and watch him and his team fi x their hair. With a team of seven, who have been with him for anything up to 15 years, the business plays an important part in the Nailsworth community supporting the festival, In Bloom and local football teams but, Jeremy was clear that what he thinks is as important, is what Nailsworth has given to the business over the years too; friendship, a livelihood which has never felt like work and the privilege of being part of a solid community. Hairdressing, he reminded me, is one of the few things you cannot buy on the internet and as one of 10 hairdressing businesses in our town, he recognises the responsibility they all have in keeping the high street alive and ensuring we are all looking after each other. Jeremy has never cut my hair, but he was a pleasure to spend 30 minutes with and a wonderful reminder of what a lovely place Nailsworth is to live in. Annie Franklin – NN Business Editor horsley Church Bellringing Horsley, Nailsworth and Kingscote Churches are all in the Nailsworth Benefi ce of the Church of England, though only Horsley has ringing Bells, dating back to 1632. A small band of local ringers have managed to keep them ringing for Sunday, Wedding and special Services since they were last repaired and re-installed in 1989, after a 50 year break. Church Bell Ringing is very old British custom and the UK has 95% of the ringable Bell Towers in the World. It is an all-age activity, carried on around our friendly and active local Stroud Association of some 17 towers. Horsley urgently needs new ringers and would welcome either individuals or friends together, to join us and enjoy the gentle, physical and mental exercise associated with Bellringing and help keep the sound of bells alive in our countryside. It ’s also traditionally a time of preparation for Summer with a spring clean. I wonder if you spring clean, getting rid of the dust and debris of another year, moving furniture and cleaning places that seldom get cleaned? It may be a time of de-cluttering, of clearing out all of those things you no longer need, things that are just getting in the way. It ’s amazing what we find when we look. This is also the season of Lent: six weeks beginning on Ash Wednesday, this year on the 26th February. Lent is traditionally a time to reflect on our lives, it can be a time for spiritual spring- cleaning; to have a longer look within ourselves for bits that need a special clean or a clear-out. To ask ourselves if there is anything we need to throw out or change. During Lent, Christians particularly reflect on their relationship with Jesus and living a Christian life, keeping at the centre, Jesus ’ command to love one another. As we look towards Holy week and Jesus ’ death on the cross and the celebration of his resurrection at Easter, we reflect on his unconditional love for the world, the bringing of new hope and forgiveness. Lent is a time for preparation, to start a new life as we celebrate Easter Day and the new life that Jesus brings. Please pop along to St George ’s Church or Christ church to find out more. The spire of St Barnabas in Minchinhampton is an important feature of our environment, giving pleasure to all who see it and Nailsworth residents, when out walking. St Barnabas, Box is a truly delightful Arts and Crafts design, the first stone church to be built after WW2. However, the gold leaf covering the Spire is peeling off and we need to raise £12,000 to pay for its re-guilding, whilst we have raised £9000 locally and hope to secure grants, competition for these is intense so we need help from the people of our larger neighbouring communities and are appealing for help from the people of Nailsworth. Dr Sampson recently presented to the Nailsworth Climate Action Network and the practice ’s efforts were well received as an example of how a small business or family can make various changes to help limit the impacts of the Climate Emergency. Climate change will impact on all our health and wellbeing. NHS budgets are tight and demand rises as the population ages. We need to look at disease preventative by tackling diabetes and heart disease before they happen. Currently we offer health checks to over 40 ’s and proactively advise on diet and lifestyle, weight management and Dr Malins also offers group consultations on low carbohydrate diets. We are a registered Active Practice and also a Parkrun practice, proudly wearing our ‘Forest Green ’ team shirts for activities. We encourage our patients to take up vaccination and cancer screening, and also try to remove paper and printing as much as possible from our communications, using emails and text messages. Of course we will continue using a letter if necessary, but will print on both sides of the paper and use economy settings to save ink. We also recycle printer cartridges and food waste goes to compost from the break room: tea bags are plastic free, milk is local organic in glass bottles and we have even tried the vegan option. Communal breaks improve staff morale and the kettle is used less as a result! We recently involved the whole practice staff in a culture exercise and as a result all feel valued members of the team, fully signed up to our vision and values. It has been suggested that prescribed inhalers, are responsible for up to 7% of the NHS carbon footprint. Last month we posted a Valentine to Nailsworth, having asked our members what they love most about our town. Top comments included the friendly people, community spirit and beautiful views. To see what else we ’ve been up to take a look @nailsworthclimateactionnetwork Many thanks to everyone who attended our recent ideas workshop, which produced lots of lively discussions and brilliant ideas for tackling climate change here in Nailsworth. Our next step is to explore these ideas further and work out how we can make them happen. We ’ll be tackling each theme in turn, starting with Food and Agriculture in March and we have several events lined up for the month ahead that we hope will be of interest. Firstly, our next meeting is on Tuesday 10th March, 8pm - 9.30pm at the Mortimer Room. This will be an interactive session looking at the viability of ideas from our workshop and preparing for upcoming events. Following this, on Thursday 12th March, local gardener Helen Pitel will be giving a talk on ‘Vegetable Growing for the Terrifi ed! ’ Helen will be talking about how to get started, gardening in small spaces and answering any questions you may have. This talk will take place at 7.30pm at the Arkell Centre. Finally, come and meet us at the Farmer ’s Market on Saturday 28th March. We ’ll be giving an introduction to the Edible Garden scheme and talking about our climate action plan. We are keen to welcome more of you to our monthly meetings and events, so why not make March the month you come along? ANY QUESTIONS? We ’d love to hear from you if you have any questions about climate change or any planet-saving tips you ’d like to share. Cobalt Card Recycling Thank you to everyone who has brought cards in for recycling at the Town Information Centre . You have responded brilliantly to this new project and over 15 sack fulls of cards have already been delivered to Cobalt in Cheltenham. Proceeds from the sale of the upcycled cards raises over £30,000 a year for the charity to help with its vital work in supporting local people with cancer, dementia and other conditions and providing funding for research. We are now selling Cobalt cards in the TIC, so please come and see and, of course, continue to bring in all your cards, so that we can continue to support this charity. They both weighed less when rescued than on arrival in the camp at Christmas 1941 as 18-month old babies. Both boys were born in Hong Kong, where their fathers were stationed before the outbreak of WW2. Derek ’s father was an architect and officer in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps and Roberts father, an officer in the British Army. In 1941, their fathers, on leave from their work in Hong Kong, arranged to meet with their families, who were to travel from Melbourne for the reunion in the Philippines but as the Japanese bore down on Hong Kong and whilst waiting for a ship home, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and America entered the war. Both fathers were recalled to Hong Kong and the boys and their mothers were captured by Japanese soldiers and taken to Baguio camp in the Philippine mountains. Drawings by Derek ’s mother of the two boys show what life was like in the camp: existing on a diet of rice and leaves, the children attended classes which had to be cancelled as the hungry youngsters were unable to concentrate. In 1945, as US forces closed in, the prisoners were moved to Bilibid, an old Spanish prison in Manila. The Japanese intended to shoot as many prisoners as possible, but American GI ’s stormed the city, pushing out the Japanese soldiers and freeing the prisoners. Robert remembers the American soldiers: to a small child they were larger than life characters who handed out amazing sweet treats the boys could only have dreamt of! During their extraction from the prison, the boys lay down in a truck with snipers firing on either side. Both agree their survival has been miraculous in so many ways. Their story was recently broadcast by the BBC Points West Team, Radio Gloucestershire, Radio Wiltshire and the service in Nailsworth recorded by Forces BFBS. Derek has compiled a book of his talented mother ’s paintings and sketches, some completed in Baguio camp. The powerful images are flanked by 14 memorabilia from both his military and family life. One of the paintings depicts the family eating breakfast in early December 1941. Derek, at 18-months, is reticent to eat his food and suddenly a bomb falls on the room next door, where the family would have been had breakfast not been prolonged: another miraculous escape! Both Derek and Robert say they cannot imagine how horrendous the experience in the camp must have been for their mothers. One of Derek ’s most prized possessions is a tiny green bear, made by his mother in the camp from socks, painstakingly unpicked and re-knitted into a teddy bear named ‘Dub ’. A duplicate, christened ‘Rub ’, was made for Robert: poignant reminders of time spent in captivity as small children. It was a great privilege for me to be able to hold ‘Dub ’ in my hand. Both Derek and Robert followed their respective fathers into the Services: Robert enlisted in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and Derek went into the Army ’s Royal Ulster Rifles, retiring as Major. On the 4th February, 2020, Robert and Derek were guests of honour at a Service of Thanksgiving at St George ’s Church in Nailsworth. The service was well attended by many of their associates and members of the Nailsworth community, including the Mayor, together with two Master USAF Sergeants from Fairford, one of whom, Master Sergeant Daniel Vega, read a message from the 37th Infantry Division Veterans, whose service personnel were directly involved in the liberation. For Robert and Derek the event was a wonderful opportunity to say a huge thank you, publicly, to the 37th Infantry for their liberation. After the service candles were lit to remember those who perished and the Americans who had rescued survivors. Derek and Robert were particularly moved by the singer, Anthony Young and his rendition of ‘America the Beautiful ’ during the service. It was a pleasure and a great privilege to meet Robert and Derek. Both fit and well, they clearly have a very strong connection with one another; so much more than mere friendship. Their stories, sadly too many to include in this article, will stay with me forever. My heartfelt thanks go to ‘the boys ’ and their families for sharing their amazing experiences and my thanks also go to Winslow House for their kind hospitality. It has been wonderful to see the endless potential of play with natural ingredients ... spaghetti worms, gloopy cornflour potions and dyed ice-cubes! During the session we gathered together to create a large piece of artwork to represent our story that week, now displayed on the walls of the lower room of the Town Hall and looking rather colourful! Our newest Playcircle members are also our youngest as the new Peek-a-boo sessions get underway. This session is specifically for children under the age of one and it has been a complete delight to sing and play with Peek-a-boo parents and babies each Wednesday! We look to the seasons for inspiration and sessions include finger poems, movement, sensory play and singing together. We finish our session with a well needed cup of tea and catch up! Many Spanish people eat ‘roscon ’ for breakfast at Epiphany. These are doughnut-like sweetbreads, amongst which are hidden a small fi gurine of the baby Jesus and a ‘fava ’ bean. They learnt about the water cycle and where dirty water goes. They found out about the journey of water from the tap back to the rivers and streams as effl uent water and the school shared an assembly about how much water is used in daily life and, more importantly, ways to save it. Owls class were treated to a visit from STEMworks ( S cience, T echnology, E ngineering and M aths). Using only K ’nex the children were shown how to make moving parts using gears and were challenged to build a fairground fl oat. Their creations were judged on design, construction and movement. The worthy winners were Stan J and Archie C! Finally, ‘well done ’ to our Young Voices Choir who performed as a single choir at the NEC in Birmingham. They had rehearsed regularly at lunchtimes since last September, learning a variety of songs and dance moves. Twenty six percent of all women experience domestic violence or abuse at some point in their lives. Stroud Women ’s Refuge is now the ONLY women ’s refuge remaining in Gloucestershire. Each year 32 women and 44 children, seeking refuge from domestic violence or abuse, are taken into its nine family rooms to help them start a new life. Women do not take their children and leave the family home lightly: it is often a matter of life and death and an act of last resort. The Refuge also has a lively outreach programme, supporting further families in the community, running workshops in schools and for professionals, reaching 525 people a year. But they also have to turn 150 families away each year. It costs £250,000 a year to run Stroud Women ’s Refuge – all raised from donations and dependent on the goodwill of our our community. John has lived with dementia for eight years and since September 2019 has been resident at Scarlet House nursing home in Stroud. Memory quilts refl ect a person ’s life and John ’s partner of 30 years, June Gardner, told us John had been in a tank regiment in the army (REME), then became a painter and decorator in his native town of Painswick. He played rugby and cricket for many years and is a great fan of Elvis Presley. Twelve members of 5VQ each made a block refl ecting different aspects of John ’s life, joined together by Sandra Elwig. 5VQ have made numerous charity quilts for Project Linus, who give quilts to children in hospital and to Allsorts, a local charity for children with disabilities and hope to make more memory quilts. As well as helping to stimulate conversation the quilts have buttons, zips or fl aps, which give the person living with dementia something to “fi ddle ” with. We thank everyone in Nailsworth and the surrounding area who have supported our fundraising events and given donations over the past nine years. Our fi rst major project of constructing a water borehole in Vumilia, continues to be a boon to the villagers, while education sponsorship has made a huge difference to the life chances of poorer pupils and students. Your donations have enabled us to continue sponsoring young people to learn trades on two year training courses at a nearby Folk Development College. You have enabled students to do A level courses and helped secondary school children with expenses such as books, uniform and solar powered lanterns for their evening homework. We would love to raise enough funds this year to complete our project of refurbishing Vumilia Primary School. Two thirds of the school buildings still remain in a very poor state of repair. The photo shows one of the old classrooms. Our fi rst fundraiser of the year will be ‘A meal at the passage to India ’ at 7pm on 10th March. Tickets at £16 may still be available Telephone Jo Smith on 01453 834714 to reserve. The second event will be ‘A quiz evening with a light supper ’ at St. George ’ Parish Room at 7pm on 25th April. Tickets at £10 will be available at Shiny Goodness Health shop (or again ring Jo to reserve). Please join us and bring your friends! Jo Smith, Chair of Nailsworth/Vumilia Link Citizen Advice Stroud & Cotswold For this month ’s article we would like to give you information about Attendance Allowance: a benefi t that helps with extra costs if you have an illness or disability severe enough and require someone to help you with your personal care. The benefi t does not cover mobility needs only. Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, so what you earn, or what savings you have will not affect any benefi t you may be entitled to.You can make a claim for Attendance Allowance if you are over State Pension age, or are older, and you have an illness or disability, either physical or mental or both. The benefi t is paid at two rates depending on your level of diffi culties and the help required, and is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions. 22 You don ’t have to have someone caring for you to make a claim. If you receive means-tested benefi ts they may be increased if you are awarded Attendance Allowance. In order to qualify for Attendance Allowance, you will need to have required help with personal care for at least six months prior to making a claim, unless you have a terminal illness, in which case you can make a claim immediately under the Special Rules. Please note the claim form for Attendance Allowance is extremely lengthy and complex so we advise you take expert advice before completing the form. To obtain a claim form call the Attendance Allowance helpline on: 0800 731 0122 . News from The Arkell Centre Artsparks Easter Project The Arkell Centre is thrilled to have been awarded a grant by Awards For All (National Lottery) to run art and craft workshops in Nailsworth over the next few months. The workshops will be led by local artist duo Liz Lancashire and Tam Inglis (Artsparks) and will provide a warm welcome for anyone who would like to do something creative, with plenty of tea and cake. They will run at the Library weekly from 17th March, and periodically at the Arkell Centre and other venues. Also at the Arkell Centre is a session of Chocolate Painting for Easter, for young families, on 8th April from 10am - 12pm, followed by Easter Bonnets and Portraits on 9th April, 10am - 12pm. Both sessions will be followed by a shared lunch for everyone. To book your place, telephone Liz Lancashire on 07407 115043, or Tam Inglis on 07880 355644. ” Thriving Communities, Artworks and Garden Biodiversity We are delighted to report on three small projects which will develop over the coming year, supported by grants and volunteers. Nailsworth in Bloom volunteers, with the assistance of Nailsworth Primary School children, will deliver 600 ‘Bee Garden ’ insect Awards during June to August. This is our 5th year of distributing this Award and Nailsworth in Bloom is delighted to experience increased support for growing garden plants, encouraging the health of our insect life. If you would like to help distribute the certifi cates this year, please contact Sue Reed, coordinator at www.rmt.org/ruskinmillcollege/events Old Bristol Road, Nailsworth GL6 0LA 01453 837537 the Town Information Centre. Both NW Bloomers and the school have received a grant from ‘Growing Our Community ’ Gloucestershire County Council to help build a poly-tunnel in the school ’s fruit and vegetable garden and to create a bee hotel. Finally, the team of ‘Artsparks ’; Liz Lancashire and Tam Inglis, were excited to receive a grant from ‘Awards for All ’. The grant will help to develop creative art and craft connections with Nailsworth Library, the Arkell Centre and Woodchester Valley Village. Nailsworth Youth Club heathly Lifestyle Tips from The White Practice Life seems to get busier each year with less time to spend on exercise. As well as my three days a week treating humans, I now spend 1-2 days a week treating horses so I ’m having to find new ways to keep supple and fit. Exercise snacking is not a new concept but studies show that several short bursts of exercise can be as effective as a prolonged workout. So in between patients Georgie will often find me going through a quick exercise routine - simple body weight exercises that require no equipment. Focusing on balancing - flexibility, co-ordination, strength, cardiovascular, simple exercises such as running on the spot, lunges, star jumps, plank - always emphasising really good form as priority. If this feels too much, just try to increase the activity in your lifestyle - recent research demonstrates that non-exercise activity thermogenesis (activity we take when not exercising) is actually more important for overall health and longevity than working out. So get active - walk rather than drive, use stairs rather than a lift, cycle to work once a week. Benefits of increasing your activity levels are not just weight loss. It will improve your whole health, improve your heart and lung function, digestion and even benefit sleep and mental health.
