We all are aware of the various restrictions being brought in across the UK, depending on the level of infection. Please take care out there and observe the rules and guidance. Social distancing and mask wearing are very important weapons against the virus. Our helpline also hasn ’t gone away: on page 24 of this issue there is further information on what your Town Council is doing. Ash Dieback Ash Dieback is here. We knew we would have to watch out for it and that it could be serious. It ’s a fungal disease from Asia that is spread by airborne spores. The best time to tell if a tree is affected is over the summer, when the most visible sign is the browning of leaves. NTC regularly checks trees on its land, and this year ’s survey has shown a signifi cant Ash dieback attack. A signifi cantly infected tree is likely to die and its wood becomes brittle. It cannot just be left, it must be felled. The cost of removing a tree increases with time, as unsafe trees are more diffi cult to deal with. Sadly, we have identifi ed several hundred trees that need to be felled. As you ’ll have seen on the A46, trees are being taken down by Gloucestershire Highways and now it is coming to our land. We have instructed our tree specialists to start removing dying trees, so over the next few months some of our wooded landscapes will change signifi cantly, particularly in these areas: Bunting Hill, Miles Marling Field, Norton Wood, KGV playing fi eld, and Wood Lane. We expect more trees to be diagnosed next year, so this is not a one off. Unfortunately, we won ’t be moving the felled trees, as national advice is that affected timber is not moved from the site, to reduce the spread of the disease spores. In all this gloom however, there is some benefi t in that a dying and decomposing tree supports more life than a living trees, providing a valuable foodbank for fungi, plants, insects, birds small mammals, and then the rest of the food chain. It is estimated that the UK will have to spend about £15bn over the next 10 years. We will need to spend over £30k this year, (about 8% of precept) and will have to increase our budget next year and following years, to deal with the devastating effects of Ash Dieback. TIC and Library The Library will begin opening on Saturday again and we are looking at reopening the Town Information Centre in the Library. Key issues are the safety of staff, volunteers and users, and compliance with the regulations as they change and evolve. We look forward to welcoming TIC volunteers back. Christmas and Love Nailsworth Generally trade in Nailsworth is good, helping to make up for loss of trade during lockdown. Please try and support local businesses where you can - not only does that employ people locally, but puts money back into our local economy. Existing businesses need you and new ones too, such as Marrows fresh fruit and veg (in Chamberlain ’s estate) who also really benefi t from your support. This Christmas, the Town Council will put up a Christmas Tree at the Clock Tower. That small piece of land is highly visible and our project with the cafe tables there has provided a great place to sit and enjoy a hot drink, whilst also advertising that Nailsworth is open! I will be running the Christmas Window competition again, and look forward to a great display of festive windows. We will also run a Treasure Hunt for children and adults. There will be Christmas puddings in shop windows across the town, with a prize draw for those that fi nd them all. Look out for fl yers in shops and restaurants around the town. We know Nailsworth CAN make a difference, come and join us. GET IN TOUCH Email: Nailsworthcan@gmail.com Instagram: @nailsworthclimateactionnetwork FB: Nailsworth Climate Action Network WEBSITE: www.nailsworthcan.org November sees the launch of the latest in our series of surveys to tackle climate change and the theme this month is nature and the environment. In Nailsworth we are fortunate to be surrounded by nature, but do we really get out into it and know what it can do for us? There are many health benefits of being in nature, just spending 10-30 minutes sitting in a garden or out in the countryside can have an effect that lasts up to four hours. It improves mood, lowers blood pressure, lowers blood sugar levels and improves resting heart rate. Getting children engaged with nature, discovering bugs, flowers, birds and climbing trees enables them to connect and understand its importance as they grow into adulthood. Biodiversity is the existence of a wide variety of plant and animal species living in their natural environment. Nature and biodiversity are crucial for human existence, providing our food, clean water and the air we breathe. Climate change is putting increasingly serious stress on biodiversity. The good news is we can all do our bit and a great place to start is by taking our survey. We will be asking you a series of questions about Nailsworth and the surrounding countryside, how you use it and what your thoughts are on nature, conservation, flooding and air quality. The survey can be found here: surveyhero.com/c/85fa295a or via our website : www.nailsworthcan.org/build-back- better-surveys Thank you to everyone who has completed our surveys so far, your feedback is much appreciated and will be incorporated into our climate action plan. It has been a similar experience at Christ Church. Our Sunday worship is still mainly on Zoom with about a dozen people in church. Having no lettings at present has actually been an opportunity to look at how we make best use our premises. There has been a big tidy up of our outside spaces. As far as the mission of our church we have seen three major developments. What was called “Renew Well Being ” and met in the Mortimer Rooms , is now called The Meeting Place and can be found in the Christ Church Rooms on Monday mornings. This is still a place where its okay not to be ok. The new meeting is now a mixture of customers old and new, plus more church people, keeping within the prescribed guidelines. Opening our church on Wednesdays has brought about a real ministry on the church steps. There have been some wonderful conversations with passers by and people who have never been into the church before. We have met people who really needed someone to talk to. At the Umbrella Coffee Club on Thursday mornings, you will fi nd our Families Worker Stella at the tables by the clock tower. Again it is a chance for people to talk to someone - a real need at present. The next groups on the Soon to Return list are Be Creative, Kids Stuff and the Tuesday Fellowship. Rev Caroline wrote about her fi rst wedding since lockdown. We have had our fi rst funeral in church, with the family of Raymond Mann. His family were wonderfully well prepared and very willing to keep to the rules. So much so that the church service went really well. The only problem we had was at Shortwood Cemetery but that ’s another story. We are starting to think about the very different Christmas that we will be having and about what we might be able to do early next year. Our projects to help the village, sometimes with other voluntary partners, have included- • Financing a borehole in 2016 to provide a clean water supply • Providing a solar panel for the clinic; bicycles, text books and a computer for the school. • Helping school pupils with grants for uniform, books and solar lights to aid evening studies. Each year we sponsor 6 students on 2 year apprenticeship courses, and 2 or 3 ‘A ’ level students, who qualify, for Sixth Form Colleges. • Financing the refurbishment of 3 classrooms at the Primary School and fundraising to refurbish the remaining 5 classrooms and 2 school offi ces continues. During the past 10 years we have seen life expectancy rise from 50 to 65 years. Electricity has arrived in Vumilia, supplying public buildings more prosperous households. Secondary schooling became free in 2016 and the village clinic/ dispensary is better equipped. Symptoms suitable for Osteopathic treatment • Back pain/neck pain • Leg pain/sciatica • Headache/migraine relief • Muscular skeletal pain • Frozen shoulder • Sporting injuries • Antenatal care and neonatal care • Osteopathy for mother and baby Open Monday - Saturday strictly by appointment only Most recently, the road running through Vumilia, connecting Tabora to Kigoma, has been tarmacked. We contact Augustin, who manages our projects in Vumilia, by mobile and email. At the beginning of this year devastating storms in East Africa, washed away much of the villagers ’ staple maize crop and in March the coronavirus arrived. The Tanzanian government is not publishing case numbers, but the pandemic does not seem as lethal as feared and overall mortality rates have not risen. Now the villagers are busy planting their crops hoping for a better harvest next Spring. I have been working with Highways engineers to improve the visibility of drivers entering the roundabout from the Stroud direction: a simple initiative you might think, but unfortunately it isn ’t! I have a small annual Highways budget for my Division, which includes Horsley through to Kings Stanley and simply to move the white line forward will cost approximately £2,000, due to the engineering works necessary to enable large vehicles to move out of Spring Hill without crossing the white lines on the Stroud side. Hopefully, there will be no hold ups as I think most people would agree that all the white lines at this junction, including the roundabout, need refreshing. Some residents will remember last year ’s consultation regarding major improvements to the mini roundabout. These have been accepted by GCC Highways and will be added into the Highways Improvement Budget at a later date, yet to be confirmed. I receive daily Covid-19 updates on the local situation from Sarah Scott, Director of Public Health in Gloucestershire. As I write this report, numbers of positive cases in the Stroud area are increasing and there were 31 cases in the week 28th September – 4th October. Even though we are still in the medium risk area, we must not become complacent. Please take note of the current restrictions for the benefit of all our community here in Nailsworth. With the onset of colder weather, I remind residents that if there is a salt bin in your road/street and it ’s not full of salt/grit, please contact Gloucestershire Highways – 08000 514514 or highways@gloucestershire.gov.uk I understand that Highways is gearing up for a particularly severe winter. Remember, if you are travelling in your car, always have a blanket and warm clothes, a torch, food and water, de-icer, boots, snow shovel, and fully charged mobile and car charger stored in your vehicle. Horsley Recycling Centre: as from 25th October the recycling centre will revert to winter opening times which is 10am-4pm and will also be back to closing on Wednesdays. Residents may be interested to know that during a 1hour period in October 187 vehicles travelled along the Horsley Road. 78 of these vehicles visited the centre. Gloucestershire County Council decided to issue certifi cates to those in the community who had gone the extra mile for their communities to recognise their achievements. As reported last month in Nailsworth News, District Councillors Steve Robinson and Norman Kay nominated Sarah for this award and County Council agreed that Sarah should be the recipient. The certifi cate, together with a bouquet of fl owers were presented to Sarah by Norman Kay, at the Saturday morning Market. Accepting the certifi cate Sarah said that the award must be for the whole of her team, as she could not have achieved it without them. Norman Kay said: “In any community there are some people who quietly go about what needs doing, day after day, week after week. These people are real gems. They are the mortar that binds a community together and gives it solidarity. You will know of course that we are talking about Sarah Martin, who with her team, stepped in where we were fi rst struck by Coronavirus and we learned that our vulnerable people needed to isolate themselves. How then, she asked, were they to obtain food and other necessities? Sarah ’s idea, with others in her team of willing helpers, was to organise regular home deliveries of meals. Sarah teamed up with Calcott Manor and Ben ’s Kitchen Tetbury chefs, who provided not only for the vulnerable group in our society, but also the NHS and other key workers with this support. If this was not enough, Sarah also organised with Emmaus and others to fi ll the shortage of PPE, by making them for use by care workers and others. ” NN Editorial Team Desy Thai at The George - Highly Recommended I would highly recommend the new Thai restaurant that has opened in The George in Newmarket. All of the food was delicious and well up to the standards we have experienced in similar venues in South East Asia. Desy has only been open for several weeks but already is proving a popular place. Read for Good, a children ’s literacy charity, based in Nailsworth, aims to motivate schoolchildren to read for fun. Readathon in schools has raised 28 million pounds since 1984. Money raised helps provide a unique programme to the UK ’s children ’s hospitals, with resident storytellers and mobile bookcases restocked every six weeks. The charity ’s partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs has also donated one million pounds to school libraries since 2010. To mark the partnership, Macmillan Children ’s Books will gift 10,000 new books from their list to children through hospitals, medical and educational settings across the UK, whilst Read for Good will launch a campaign for a school to win a dedication in one of Julia Donaldson ’s new books. Read for Good will also host a special virtual read/draw-along of The Hospital Dog with its creators, to enable children in hospitals and their schools to enjoy the tale of a very special therapy dog named Dot Julia, a patron of the Gloucestershire- based charity since 2018 says, “My association with Read for Good goes back many years, and it was while visiting the Evelina Children ’s Hospital with them that I found out about a dog who visited the hospital to cheer children up. This inspired me to write the book, and I then did a ward round with the real-life hospital dog and her owner which helped me develop the story line. With visitor restrictions in hospitals still in place, and hospital dogs not able to do their rounds, children on the wards certainly need the distraction and comfort of brand new books even more than before. ” Read for Good chief executive, Justine Daniels adds, “Like all charities at the moment, we ’re facing tough times and Macmillan Children ’s Books ’ generous contribution of enticing books along with delivery cost support, will be invaluable to help us reach children. We want children wherever they are to have access to the books and stories that will entertain, distract and comfort, fi ring-up imaginations and a love of stories. ” Virtual Open Days From Wellbeing Schools Schools would normally be opening adopted by the pair, for the creation of parents through immersive and enticing their doors to prospective students virtual content and wellbeing initiatives online content, working alongside and parents, but Gloucestershire for schools. As I begin to write this, I am transported back six months or so to the time when We were deciding whether to take part in Britain in Bloom. If you remember back to pre-Covid times, we had a meeting to recruit new volunteers and then discussed what we should do. Having decided not to participate in 2020 but to have a year of consolidation, we were then whisked into lockdown and this was fairly swiftly followed by Britain in Bloom cancelling all competition this year. At our last committee meeting in September, we re-visited the subject and, you will probably not be surprised to hear, we have decided 2020 is like a mystery year, during which very little was able to change, even though we do have some excellent new volunteers and the Bloomers have made a magnificent effort to keep things looking good, for which much thanks. The same reasons Swift Action Now! The Stroud Swift Group met in September to compare notes on this year ’s Swift population and plan ahead for next year. Nailsworth and the surrounding valleys are a ‘Swift hotspot ’, with a healthy number of nesting sites and a wonderful display of swooping Swifts (known as screaming parties) from early May till early August. 18 for not entering Britain in Bloom, however, regretfully still exist. These were: 1. We need time to induct and encourage our new, wider group of volunteers. 2. We want to increase both group participation and the number of ‘adopt a trough/plot schemes without a judging deadline governing our actions. 3. We will use 2021 to establish our 5-point plan, again without enforced deadlines. So, I find myself reiterating our Vision for the Future 2020 as Vision for the Future 2021 and here it is. • Sustainable planting in the town centre troughs and flower beds • Bee and insect friendly planting to form a wildlife corridor • Incredible edibles- at the Community Garden • Water harvesting- butts secreted around the town centre • Reduce, re-use and recycle (aka peat, pots and poo!) It is not all gloom, doom and despair, Bloomers have already made a cracking These amazing birds spend almost their whole lives in the air, only coming down to earth to lay eggs in their rooftop nests. Now is the ideal time welcome Swifts by putting up nest boxes under house eaves. The people at Peak Boxes build excellent Swift boxes, including a small, feathery nest, all ready for a new generation: https://peakboxes.co.uk/ start on these aims but we have lost precious time and momentum thanks to the unmentionable, invisible enemy. We will continue to do what we can to maintain and progress things in the coming months and hope that next Spring, we can return to our plans with renewed vigour so that in 2022 we can enter Britain in Bloom again. Thanks to everyone for your continuing support and if you still want to volunteer, let us know. Happy November! Again, on Remembrance Sunday , large crowds came out to support the massed Nailsworth Band which led the Parade from the Town Square to St. George ’s. Again, the Church was filled to the brim with people to bear witness to those who had fallen in past wars and also to those who have survived these terrors and live as disabled veterans. The Rev. Michael Irving spoke very simply, but movingly on the theme of “ Remembering and Dismembering ”, all of which was based on the famous stone statue of an RAF pilot sitting on the cliffs over Eastbourne and looking over the English Channel to France. The Deputy Mayor laid a wreath along with other local organisations and it was good to see the youth represented again, with the Head Boy of Sir William Romney playing his part as well as a representative from Lèves laying a wreath from France. From the Church Poppy collection alone, £630 was raised and this will go directly to the RBL Forest Green/ Nailsworth Branch. N ----------------------------------------------------- Page 21 ----------------------------------------------------- R E M E M B R ANCE Autumn Remembrance One day last week we visited the glorious Westonbirt Arboretum to see the dazzling colours of autumn. With a lucky break in the weather, on a bright sunny morning, the Maple trees were just stunning. The sun obligingly shone for much of the morning: Acer Glade was bathed in shades of yellow, red, orange and amber, set against a backdrop of lofty trees that towered above the spreading Acers. We ’re so lucky to have the arboretum, its knowledgeable staff and volunteers in our county. Whilst walking the arboretums trails, fairly quiet due to Covid restrictions, my thoughts turned from the beauty around me to the sharp contrast of the loss, hardship and sadness of our world today. I thought also of the fallen from two World Wars and of another, much more sombre arboretum, The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire: a British site of national remembrance; its objective to honour the fallen, recognise service and sacrifi ce and foster pride in the British Armed Forces and civilian community. Opened in 2001, the space contains many different memorials, set in 150 acres and surrounded by 30,000 trees. We ’re not able to hold a full scale remembrance parade here in Nailsworth this year, though a service at St Georges Church will take place on Sunday 8th November at 10.50am and more about the service can be found on page two of this issue. However, at 11 am on the 11th November we can and will remember the fallen from these two terrible wars. We can still buy and wear a poppy and pay our respects at the Clock Tower Memorial where wreaths will still be laid. We can also remember the victims of this terrible pandemic, their friends and family and all those who suffer from the effects of Covid-19, whether through illness, loss, anxiety or fi nancial hardship . It ’s what the Nailsworth community does so well. It ’s not too late for autumn colour at Westonbirt so book a slot online and immerse yourself in its glorious colours. Socially distanced and strictly adhering to the rules, our hosts, despite all that the weather has thrown at them, offer shelter from the storm that is Covid-19. Every single weekend they have offered Sunday roasts, a variety of themed food evenings, and a quiz night, plus a great selection of ales and lagers and perhaps most importantly, a warm welcome. The Hog provides us with an opportunity to meet in a convivial atmosphere for that all important social contact with friends and acquaintances. We are so lucky to have a local pub! So thanks very much to our hosts, Nick, Helen, Luke and Sarah. It ’s great to have you behind the bar! Horsley Community Shop is also doing a sterling job to combat Coronavirus. The shop continues to make deliveries to vulnerable people. Sarah, the Shop Manager, together with a team of willing volunteers, work tirelessly to provide the community with groceries, fresh fruit and veg and a host of other products, beautifully displayed on the well stocked shelves and competitively priced. There ’s still time to plan something bright and colourful to take us through the darker days of December. The excellent ‘Window Wanderland ’ website https://www.windowwanderland.com/ has some creative ideas on how you can light up your home with eye-catching, cheap and covid-safe displays for you, your neighbours and your town to enjoy. What ’s needed is a bit of organisation to join up with Window Wanderland and get a small group together. Or just decorate your windows anyway! Long Table Ready Meals The Long Table have been talking to us about providing ready meals in the town; much as they have been in the area around Stroud. The plan is for people to order healthy ready meals for collection and pay what they can for them. We really hope that we will be able to provide them with access to premises so they can start up this fantastic way of helping those in need. Coronavirus Helpline - Plans for Winter Nailsworth Town Council ’s community helpline proved an invaluable resource, providing vital support to many residents in and around Nailsworth during lockdown. The amazing team of volunteers supported many residents who were shielding, or those with no local support network in place. With winter approaching, the Town Council would like to urge residents to ensure they have a support network in place. Do you have friends, neighbours or family who can help you if you need to isolate? If you don ’t have anyone who can support you the helpline is still there and calls are monitored regularly – 01453 367399 . The Town Council can ’t replace emergency and social services, but we hope this will be an additional service for those who have no one else to help them.
