We have printed a four page colour special feature which covers the performing arts, but also something special! If you missed the spectacle that was Window Wanderland, see our centre spread pages, showcasing a fascinating collection of innovative designs made from coloured tissue paper and glue, that enchanted all who visited them. Practical prowess also gets a mention this month when we bring to the fore the skilled tradesmen that regularly advertise their services within the pages of the Nailsworth News. Add to this the innovative Visit Nailsworth initiative, our regular NCan practical information on recycling and the current success of Forest Green Rovers and you have many of the elements that go together to make Nailsworth the inclusive, thriving town we all know and love. Stop Press Personal Best Cookbook We have just learned that Personal Best are re-launching their Inspired cookery book. Originally launched in the summer, to raise funds for and awareness of the Stroud Women ’s Refuge and its work, Personal Best aimed to raise in excess of £80,000 from book sales. Matthew Fort, a Great British Menu Judge, commented that putting the book together was admirable in every way. Though sales have gone well, Personal Best would like to raise even more for the Stroud Women ’s Refuge. The recipes are simple, quick and easy and will help a very worthwhile cause. With the prospect of spending more time out of doors, our houses and gardens will undoubtedly come under much closer scrutiny. Guttering and roof facias, exterior paintwork, roof tiles, misted windows, building and general repairs to outhouses, garages, walls, paths and fencing, are just a few of the things that may need attention when winter and exposure to the elements has taken its toll. Perhaps you ’re planning a new project, either in the house or in the garden and need the services of a builder, plumber, decorator or ground clearing service, planting or tree maintenance? A glance through the NN will reveal a myriad of tradesmen offering their expertise and a range of services. Our loyal advertisers are vital both to the NN ’s survival and to our readers, to access local services. Locally based, tried and tested, their advertisements are always accessible among the pages of the Nailsworth News. When you require expert help, why not make the NN your first port of call and find a local company to provide the service you need. By using local companies you will help a local entrepreneur to grow and also support your community ’s free paper. Many of our advertising clients report a healthy response to their adverts. If you are a local company with a service to offer, please consider advertising with us. Our advertising rates are extremely competitive. There are some changes, however, which should start to help to make things safer and easier for pedestrians. Firstly, we recently received confi rmation of funding to make the town centre a 20mph zone, desperately needed to slow traffi c down. There are still some legalities and arrangements that we have to work through before it ’s fi nally approved and can go ahead, but let ’s hope it won ’t be too long now. Secondly, I hope that we ’ll be able to start work on a long-term plan to make Market Street more pedestrian friendly than it is now. Hopefully, you managed to get to one of the markets in the street last year and enjoyed the freedom of getting around without having to negotiate traffi c; the good news is that there ’ll be more similar markets and events this year. Finally, I ’m sure that you ’re aware of recent changes to the Highway Code ( https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ the-highway-code-8-changes-you- need-to-know-from-29-january-2022 ) which are designed to make things safer for pedestrians and cyclists. We have a number of lanes and roads in our town which have no pavements, and new rules spell out the need for drivers to be more considerate to pedestrians and cyclists in this kind of environment. As a guide dog user, I fi nd walking around our town ’s busy streets quite diffi cult at the best of times and virtually impossible at others; if you ’re driving, please consider pedestrians, don ’t park on and block pavements, and give time to those of us whose mobility is impaired. Thank you for your consideration. Events and festivals As Spring starts there is a lot of activity in the council and we are preparing for a packed season of events in the town. The Annual Town Meeting will return to its usual date of Saturday 23rd April 10am till 1pm in the Town Square. This is your chance to meet your councillors and come and talk to the many community groups and organisations that do so much. Hot on the heels of the Nailsworth Festival in May, will be the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee weekend (2nd to 5th June). Look out for meeting dates for the Jubilee weekend festivities – the Council is bringing together everyone who wants to be involved so we can all plan our events to fi t in with the national programme and local events. As everyone fi rms up their ideas, we will publish a programme of events in Nailsworth News and at the Civic Centre. Festival of Words The Council is also pulling together a completely new event, celebrating words in all forms; spoken, read and in the form of art. The Festival of Words will be coming to Three Storeys, Miles Marling Field and other venues. We hope it will spark some interest with people of all ages and abilities. Heritage Open Day – third time lucky? The Council will again be coordinating Heritage Open Day this year, on Saturday 10th September, to give you the opportunity to look around some of our fascinating and historic buildings and learning about their history. The event was cancelled during the past couple of years and last time, we brought together eleven sites; private houses, public buildings and much-loved Nailsworth icons, such as the Clocktower. This time we hope to offer some old favourites and access two newly restored buildings. There is more news from Nailsworth Town Council on page 24. The current proposal by the Independent Parliamentary Boundary Commission is for Nailsworth and Horsley to stay in the Stroud Constituency, with the addition of Wotton-under-Edge. This won ’t make any difference to Gloucestershire County Council and Stroud District Council with regard to refuse collection etc. Many people don ’t realise the need for an average of 75,000 electors in each constituency. For that reason, Hardwick, currently in the Stroud Constituency, cannot be included in the Gloucester Constituency. Up until now Nailsworth and Horsley have been fi ne with the current proposal, staying in the marginal seat of Stroud. Early in February a proposal was put forward for Nailsworth and Horsley to be transferred to the Cotswold Constituency and for Hardwick to remain in Stroud. If Nailsworth and Horsley were to move to the Cotswold Constituency it would mean your MP ’s base would be a distance away in Stow on the Wold. There was a similar proposal during the last Boundary Commission review, as Nailsworth is so closely associated with Stroud. However, that particular review was abandoned with no change at the time. There is an opportunity for voters to put their views about the proposals at a Public Hearing to be held at Gloucester Guild Hall on 24th/25th March. It would be necessary to book a 10 minute slot at the hearing as soon as possible. Go online https:// boundarycommissionforengland. independent.gov.uk/2023-review/public- hearings . The website also gives more information about the Review. The fi nal decision will be presented to Parliament on 1st July 2023, in readiness for the next parliamentary elections. We also had our usual Members Christmas Supper in December when members enjoyed a supper provided by the committee, a quiz, and music provided by local musician, Tom Robbins. We now look forward to our biannual open day event at Wycliffe College on Wednesday 13th April, particularly as we had to cancel our 2020 event due to Covid. The main objective of the group is to create an all-inclusive platform that will allow local businesses, schools and residents to collaborate on future projects. Communication between traders shows the overall consensus that Nailsworth is in need of a boost to revive the town and restore the buzz within the community. Nailsworth has become well known over the years for its wide selection of independent businesses that strive to provide customers with a personal experience and as such, we feel this unique attribute should be highlighted in an attempt to attract tourists to our thriving community. As local traders of a small town, we appreciate the importance of reaching out to surrounding areas, creating links throughout the Cotswolds. One of our current objectives is to focus on creating strong ties to Stroud and its traders, as one of our neighbouring towns, thus improving connections between towns, allowing traders to create new support systems. To kick start these connections, Nailsworth Independents will be taking part in ‘Fiver Fest ’ for two weeks in March alongside neighbouring Market towns such as Stroud, Stonehouse and Wotton-under-Edge. There is also a regular Meeting of Friends on Wednesday morning at the Meeting House. As we began 2022, we reflected on the health of our Meeting and on what we might need to restore and revive as we come out of the pandemic and look to the future. We have appreciated the importance of fellowship and support during these past two years, and our children decided to help us with this by starting a process of making wooden name badges for all who attend, to help us recognise and know each other, even whilst wearing masks! Visitors will still be welcome with or without a badge. A beloved Member of our Meeting, Liz Willis, died in January and these words, written by one of the founders of the Religious Society of Friends, George Fox, in 1656 were read at her funeral, and the following Sunday: “Be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come, that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people, and to them; then you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone ”. Each Sunday, as we worship together, we strive to listen to the promptings of the Spirit within and discern how we might best respond in this time to what is required. Before I divulge the winners, allow me a small refl ection. We have made a mess of things; I did not have to read every entry, an amazing team of members did that, but I did get to read the winners before presenting the prizes and I hope we can rectify the sad view these talented children have for their future in our world. We had Three winners from Amberley; Freida Lindsay, Adam Quick, and Naunidh KeurSembi, two from Brimscombe; Jasper Seward and Ed Baines and two from Woodchester; Reuben Michael-Morgan and Poppy Gardiner. Their essays or poems have been sent on to the next level of the competition and we wish them the best of luck. One of the lovely things Rotary does after a major funder raiser, as was the Five Valleys Fireworks last October, is to give the money away. They have been members of our team here for many years and we will feel a gap when they are gone. Dr Latter joined the former Church Street doctors in 1996, the following year the two Nailsworth Practices merged to become Price ’s Mill Surgery. Having worked for 25 years here, and also at Stroud Hospital for a long time, he has been the Managing Partner in the practice for the last seven years. Patients are used to his direct and to-the-point manner and staff have relied upon his team-bonding, leadership skills. His familiar voice and pragmatic approach are a loss to us, but we wish him all the best for his retirement and hope he enjoys more time with his wife and grown-up children. Dr Yerburgh will also be leaving us. For many years she was employed by the practice but became a partner 12 years ago. For the last 5 years she has also shared her wisdom and common- sense with the Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, after she was elected to represent the views of primary care in the Stroud Locality. She will be moving on to enjoy life in the garden, where she hopes to keep busy tending to and advising folk on their horticulture. Fortunately, our team of doctors has been boosted with the addition of two new partners: one new face and one quite familiar. Dr Kingswood was previously one of our trainees. After qualifying and working elsewhere for a couple of years, we are proud to see her return and boost our service provision; especially in dementia and menopause care. Dr Morris has moved from a practice in Chippenham where she has worked for several years. She is very experienced in internal medicine and population health. Other changes have been the departure of our two previous junior trainees; Drs MacKenzie and Morgan, to be replaced by Drs Amlani and Jones. We look forward to what new skills they can bring to the team while we impart all that is good about General Practice and Nailsworth to them Sara Eckersall Operations Manager Price ’s Mill Surgery N e w l k new pr e m i s e s T h e Steppes R esidential Care H ome Est 1981 Your local health food store N o w at George St, Nailsworth. On Saturday 28th May we are delighted to be welcoming the Brodsky String Quartet back to Nailsworth, as part of their 50th anniversary tour. Since forming in 1972, they have retained a pre-eminent position amongst British string quartets. As well as performing around the world and earning praise for their complete cycles of quartets by Shostakovich, Beethoven, Schubert and others, they have made musical history with ground-breaking collaborations with celebrated artists from the world of rock and pop. On Saturday 21st May Ken Wood and The Mixers will bring their own unique blend of bold, brassy soul, stomping R&B and ludicrous on-stage antics and will be presenting “Amazing Stories of Blues and Soul ” the Mixers ’ very own big stage show - a breathless musical journey to discover the roots of soul. Liz Grand is another artist returning to the Festival, with her new one-woman Dementia Festival Nailsworth Dementia Action Alliance is delighted to announce a 3-day Festival at 3 Storeys, Nailsworth. The programme will include art and creative writing workshops, poetry, film, music and mindfulness. It is designed to appeal to People with Dementia, their carers and families and the whole community. The Film “ Iris ” about Iris Murdoch ’s life and relationships, and her journey through Alzheimer ’s disease is being shown on 29th April, presented by Sir Richard Eyre, director of the film who lives locally, and is a Patron of Arts4Dementia, a charity that promotes arts events for people with early Dementia. On Sat 30th April, Mike Kelly, Mayor of Nailsworth, will show ‘Where Is Mrs Christie? ’. In 1926, the famous author went missing, presumed dead by many, for eleven days. Was it a publicity stunt? Or was there a darker secret involved in this disappearance that was to affect her for the rest of her life? The answer to all these questions will, as in all good thrillers, be revealed in this show! On Wednesday 25th May, the Festival provides an opportunity for you enter the darkly comic world of Moscow Drug Club. Combining original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Eartha Kitt, Moscow Drug Club provide an lead a Sensory walk along the beautiful Ruskin Mill Valley, exploring the senses of smell, hearing and touch, with a focus on the appreciation of nature. This will be the first Dementia Friendly walk of the season. A classical concert will follow at 1.30pm at St Georges Church, featuring the renowned tenor James Gilchrist, accompanied by pianist Anna Tilbrook and proceeds will be donated to Mindsong, a Gloucestershire charity reaching people with Dementia through people and song. James Gilchrist ’s recital consists of quartets of songs, about the seasons, continents and animals ,which includes songs by Schubert, Ravel and Bernstein ’s La Bonne Cuisine, four recipes set to music, both beautiful and great fun. The Festival will end Saturday evening with a performance by Honeymoon Swing at 3 Storeys with an opportunity intoxicating and intimate musical experience. The theme was “Out of the Woods ” and householders and shop owners interpreted this in a wide variety of ways and added their own freewheeling designs on other topics. A beautiful outdoor gallery enjoyed by lots of window wanderers of all ages. The displays were shown from 3rd to 6th February all around the town centre, Watledge, Church Road, and up towards Forest Green. Organised by local arts partnership Artsparks, the project was funded by Awards for All and Gloucestershire County Council. Fifty- seven window-owners took part, and the team hope to repeat the event next year, with even more windows. Many thanks to Nailsworth Town Council, who actively assisted in the organising of this event. They were well on their way to achieving that goal, receiving industry awards and five-star accolades for productions, when all theatres had to shut due to the pandemic. Undefeated, within seven days, armed with great technical wizardry and kit, they turned the theatre space into a functional digital studio. A string of critically acclaimed online productions followed, and the national media applauded their ingenuity and creativeness. The Barn ’s profile exploded nationally and internationally - even mentioned in Parliamentary dispatches and the New York Times! The critics hailed the Barn the beacon of arts and culture in the country… The Telegraph as “the theatre that took on Covid and won! ” Now approaching their fourth birthday, their ambitious 2022 season is a continued sign of the theatre ’s fearless, innovative, and resilient nature: comprising new work, family entertainment, comedy, murder mystery, enthralling, challenging drama, musicals and thrillers, through to another Christmas blockbuster. Their March production is the World Premier of Michael Morpurgo ’s, The Mozart Question, 21st March – 30th April, followed by Rogers & Hammerstein ’s Some Enchanted Evening, 6th May – 28th May, featuring some big screen hits, followed by monthly shows from a wide variety of genre. Their mission to produce challenging and inspiring professional theatre of the highest standards has been clear from the start. This year ’s “Built by Barn ” productions reflects that continued commitment, to be a theatre that sits at the heart of their community, sharing all the thrills and gifts that live entertainment can bring. They are committed to giving everyone the opportunity to experience the power of theatre, and have their own charity which actively reaches out to the community, working in Schools, providing learning opportunities for young people in the performing Arts, scholarships for their own Barn Academy, and much more Visit their website for details of performances, to book for shows, and learn more about their Charity. https:// barntheatre.org.uk. Guests on this occasion will be the Wyndham Singers, a choir of around twenty men from Kentisbeare, who some say are one of Devon ’s finest exports! This will be the fourth concert with the two choirs singing, alternating between Gloucestershire and Devon. All the singers are eagerly anticipating their reunion after an enforced two-year delay due to Covid. There will be a varied programme of arrangements of popular songs by composers such as Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Elton John and Richard Carpenter, as well as the ever-popular Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré 14 and Panis Angelicus by Franck. With the excellent acoustic of St George ’s, it should be a very pleasant and entertaining evening. The concert will begin a period of special celebration for the Stuart Singers as 2022 is their 30th anniversary year. As well as thirty years of making music, they have raised over £250,000 for local charities and good causes. With local support, they look forward to continuing for many more years to come. In Trefoil Guild, members aged 18+ make new friends, travel, explore, serve their communities and help Guiding and Scouting thrive across the UK! Trefoil Guild acts like a branch of Girlguiding and its members agree to support the guiding ethos - including the pledge to help other people. Many members pass on their skills and knowledge to local guiding units, from helping Brownies work towards a badge to preparing older girls for a camping adventure. Many members are unit leaders or helpers in Girlguiding units, but it is not a requirement to be a Trefoil member. But it ’s not all about the girls - there are plenty of opportunities for members to try something new, take on a new personal challenge and escape the daily routine. The best thing is that what you do is up to you! Here in Nailsworth we have a Trefoil Branch, with members who are, or have been, connected to the Guide movement in various ways – but this is not necessary to become a member There are meetings once a month on the third Tuesday between 7-9pm in Nailsworth for talks, activities but most of all for fun and friendship. Messy Church takes place monthly, after school: an opportunity for children and parents to come together and share biblical stores, take part in craft activities, eat, sing and pray together. For us at Horsley, we see this as a great way of bringing together the local community. Finally, we must mention our after- school Cookery Club which has been cooking up a storm! Children from Otters and Owls have been very busy practising their chopping, peeling, greasing, rubbing in and coating skills and created lots of delicious goodies including, gingerbread, scones, pitta pizzas and vegetables coated in breadcrumbs, shared with an appreciative after-school club. There seem to be signs that Spring is springing, even though it ’s still quite early in the year. Members have been sharing their recent plant-spottings. Matthew and Christopher shared pictures of snowdrops in their gardens, and Christopher spotted several early bloomers on a trip to Pembrokeshire recently, where banks are burgeoning with red campion and wild garlic, while sea campion is flowering on the coastal rocks. Gillian shared a picture of her beautiful delicate pale blue Iris, Katherine Hodgkin and Rosemary spotted a floriferous and unusual shrub: a grey- leaved euryops: a native of South Africa, Rosemary did well to find it just outside Haverfordwest! As we walked, shafts of sunlight penetrated the canopy above us, encouraging the aconites to partially open in response to the sun ’s warming rays. The fl owers, in their natural setting among the trees and leafy, moss-covered forest fl oor, were breathtaking. As we approached the half-way mark, a passing walker stopped to chat and assured us their were fairies in the wood and very soon our walk morphed into a magical quest to fi nd one. Perched in forks of trees and seated in mossy hollows, sure enough, there they were! Youngsters from the nearby village had carefully hidden the fairies all around the wood. They must have had such fun fi nding places to hide them and I can imagine a young child ’s joy at fi nding a tiny fairy, nestled in the hollow of a tree. I made a mental note to take my two small granddaughters to the wood next time they come to stay. I hope the transient visitors will still be there, though have no doubt the children who put them there will be in the wood regularly to check on their ethereal charges! Sadly, as we retraced our steps we heard several gunshots: any birdsong was swiftly quietened and the offender was spotted with his dog in the fi eld running alongside the wood. However, our walk was done and we made our way back to the car. A magical walk which I ’m sure we ’ll repeat – perhaps around bluebell time. Heather Nicholls NN Editorial Team Nailsworth Community Orchard The volunteers at the Nortonwood community orchard are a hardy lot - braving wind, rain, scorching heat and cold. Well maybe not that hardy as we did cancel one work day when it was tipping down with rain and heatwaves are rare in this area. However, over recent weekends we have cleared the undergrowth and planted many more trees, wild cherry and apple, in the areas cleared by the council due to ash dieback as part of the platinum jubilee tree planting initiative. We have also completed half the annual pruning of the older trees and started giving all the trees a winter tree wash. Last month we noted that no snowdrops had appeared. On 6th February not only were the snowdrops in fl ower but there was also a bunch of daffodils in full bloom! The orchard is full of surprises - if you take the footpath from Nortonwood to Northfi eld Road you will pass through all the orchard area. Do have a good look at how the fruit trees are fl ourishing over the month. The next work day is on Sunday March 6th at 2pm when we plan to continue hedge laying. All are welcome. Midway through February and Forest Green Rovers are the runaway leaders of EFL League Two: 18 unbeaten games; 10 points clear at the top of the division and in 29 games they have scored 60 goals - more than any other team - while conceding only 23 times. Top scorer, Matty Stevens, leads the league ’s scoring charts with 20 goals, a position he shares with Dom Telford of Newport County. Away from home, Rovers are still undefeated this season. January included FGR ’s most signifi cant victory. The team visited Tranmere, second in the table and arguably produced their best display to date, winning 4-0. Tranmere supporters described it as the best performance they had seen from a visiting team in the same league. January and February have also included wins against Colchester Utd, Stevenage, Newport, Rochdale and Carlisle, as well as draws against Northampton, Exeter and Port Vale. ‘On Saturday 19th February, FGR lost 1-0 to Walsall, but they remain 10 points clear at the top of the league as their nearest rival Tranmere could only draw ’. Rovers have two of the top three goal-scorers in the league, Jamille Matt and Matty Stevens, strikers well supplied with opportunities from wing-backs, Kane Wilson and Nicky Cadden. But the team is a solid unit throughout and much of the credit for this should go to the management team, Rob Edwards and Richie Kyle. Appointed at the beginning of this season, the duo have transformed Rovers ’ style of play. Surely it is only a matter of time before they win promotion? The team are playing their most exciting football: highly skilled athletes, unbeaten in the league since 9th October. The club is family friendly and spectators can stand in the North Stand, grab a seat in the East Stand, or join the noisy South Stand if you like singing! Kids under 11 ’s go free and tickets can be booked online through the club website, www.fgr.co.uk. Match previews and other news is available on the Supporters club website, www.fgrsc. com. The club presses on with plans for a new all-wooden 5000 seat stadium and training facilities for the men ’s, women ’s and academy teams and a green-tech business park. The development, by junction 13 of the M5, would contribute £150m annually to the local economy and £2m in business rates to Stroud DC. The greenest football club in the world is not short of ambition, both on and off the pitch!
