Market Street monthly events It ’s a sure sign that Spring has arrived when the first of the year ’s monthly Market Street events takes place and the road is closed to traffic. The Council began the events last year, to help bring people into town after the seemingly endless lockdowns, but they ’re now run by an enthusiastic group of independent traders. Unfortunately, I wasn ’t able to get to last month ’s event, but it all seems to have gone very well and was as popular as ever. The energy of our many small businesses is inspirational and I hope you ’ll enjoy supporting them by shopping locally as much as possible. Dementia Friendly Arts festival This innovative mini-festival took place at the end of last month, crammed with a huge variety of events. A couple of partially sighted friends and I, all sensory guides at Westonbirt Arboretum, enjoyed taking small groups of visitors on a sensory tour along the valley from Ruskin Mill in order to help them explore and use their other main, non-visual senses in order to enjoy the environment. Coming up ….. We ’re all lucky and know that Nailsworth ’s not just a great place to live, but it ’s also a lovely place to visit. The Council has been working for some time to develop tourism; we will be pooling our knowledge and funds with some of the other Market Towns in the district to coordinate visitor information and use an interactive app to promote our unique towns. This is an exciting opportunity to develop our tourism economy and town resources at a minimal cost, and is timed to tie in with a new Tourism Coordinator post for Stroud District Council. It will give us the opportunity to build and create tourism links and engagement across our district, between towns and with tourism businesses. We already have our excellent Town Information Centre in the Library and it ’ll be exciting to explore how the Council, TIC volunteers, businesses and residents will all work together to keep our town thriving and welcoming to everybody. As well as being a chance to meet and talk to people across the town, it ’s a chance to meet the Mayor, Cllr Mike Kelly, and other councillors and find out how your Town Council has been working for you. If you missed the festivities, you may have seen the Town Awards displayed in the Civic Centre window, along with a copy of the Annual Report. And if you missed that, here are the award winners: The Festival Arts Award: Three Storeys The inspirational Window Wanderland event in February showed the way Nailsworth people come together to make darker days lighter. In a way, this award is for everyone who helped, participated and admired the beautiful displays. There is another candidate for the Arts Award; a place and a person, both of whom have done so much to promote, inspire and bring people together to celebrate the arts. Three Storeys and its owner and creator Nicki Schmiegelow. This sensitively restored building has breathed new life into part of Nailsworth and is the home to new festivals, events and businesses. Chamberlain Sporting Award: Forest Green Rovers and coach Rob Edwards Rob Edwards has transformed the culture at The Fully Charged New Lawn. He is a highly respected leader who is trusted by directors, players and supporters. He is an excellent communicator, a caring manager and upholds high standards in the way he relates to officials on match days. There could be no better role model for aspiring footballers, supporters of Forest Green and those interested in sport in the Nailsworth community. Rob was awarded the EFL League Two Manager of the Month for August 2021. He has won the award again twice and The Rovers have been top of the table almost every week of the season. They are now virtually assured of promotion to division one and are likely to finish the season as champions. What an achievement this will be for ‘the little club on the hill ’. Youth Award: Jake Phillipson Jake Phillipson has lived in Nailsworth all his life, he has recently organised tree planting afternoon for the Scouts at Penn Wood and is a young leader with the Scouts at Chalford. He has just been selected to attend the World Jamboree scouting event in South Korea in 2023 for which he has to raise £4,000 for his own trip so he is busy organising fund raising events. He is working towards his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and he is a keen rugby player. He also raises his own poultry and has ewes which are currently in lamb. Platinum Jubilee Shield: John Williams One of the reasons Nailsworth town centre looks so attractive is the care it is given by a small team of volunteers. John Williams is one of them. John works tirelessly litter picking our streets and cleaning some of the road signs. Starting out on a local patch near his home, John has expanded his litter picking to include all parts of the town and even weeding the pavements. He is our favourite Womble. In 1982 a costume hire business opened its doors in Days Mill, Nailsworth. Forty years later it is still going strong, serving the people of Nailsworth and much further afield, with amazing, quality costumes and accessories. To celebrate this achievement we are holding an exhibition in the Mortimer Rooms on Saturday 21st May as part of Nailsworth Festival. The story began several years before the business opened. Maud Franklin and Astrid Bingle had been making costumes for Nailsworth Dramatic Society for many years and the costumes were stored in Maud ’s home in Nailsworth. There was such a collection that Maud began hiring them out, mainly for New Year parties, with the proceeds going to NDS. Soon the demand to hire grew throughout the year but, with a full time job, Maud was only able to open at weekends. When Maud was made redundant in 1981 the idea of launching a costume hire business was born. In October 1982 Maud and Astrid opened Cotswold Costumes in Days Mill. Eventually, Maud bought out Astrid and continued to run the business herself. In 2005 Maud sold the business to Jim and Glynis Robinson. The stock had continued to grow and Jim and Glynis soon realised that bigger premises were needed. It was to be seven years before a perfect location was found in the basement factory space of the Tradeplas building. Dressing rooms and storage space had to be built and then began the massive job of transferring the stock. Business closed at Days Mill on 28th July 2012 and re-opened at the Tradeplas building on 4th August 2012. This is where Cotswold Costumes can still be Rose Unwin Reflexology MAR Traditional reflexology Pregnancy reflexology Fertility reflexology Indian head massage 07791 508061 Nailsworth GL6 0AH roseunwinreflexology@gmail.com www.roseunwinreflexology.co.uk found! In 2017 Jim and Glynis decided to sell but it seemed there would not be a buyer and, reluctantly, Jim planned to close the business. At the last minute Ruth Killey, a costume graduate and long time user of the shop, stepped in to buy it. Ruth had worked for Disney, the West End and on touring shows and her knowledge and enthusiasm for costumes made her an excellent new owner. She took over in August 2017 and has been running the business ever since. We have a variety of customers, the most famous being Prince Harry who notoriously hired a Nazi uniform in 2005 making headline news. There were even reporters camped outside the shop! The business has grown and grown and there are now 7000+ costumes. We try to help everyone to find just what they ’re looking for and we rarely fail. From individuals to theatre groups, schools, films and television there is always plenty of choice and great expertise from Ruth and team. On Saturday 21st May, as part of Nailsworth Festival, Cotswold Costumes is holding an exhibition of photos and stories spanning the 40 years. All of the dwellings will have air sourced heat pumps, solar panels on the roofs, bird and bat boxes, even the fences will have hedgehog access. Electric charging cables will be laid to each parking space. There will even be a rain garden installed within this carbon neutral development, with an EPC rating of ‘A ’. This development will be the first new council properties to be built in Nailsworth since the 1980s. Lawnside The refurbishment of the 64 council properties on Lawnside is nearing completion. These 1960 ’s houses and bungalows will have been reroofed, new windows fitted and, importantly, externally insulated. This should help tenants to reduce their energy costs. Lawnside Play Area Stroud District Council has received a grant to refurbish four play areas across the district. We are working hard to have Lawnside included in this scheme. We have been fortunate to have had £45,000 spent on the MUGA at Lawnside in the last financial year. Community Development Worker Nailsworth has secured a grant from SDC to provide funding towards the employment of a Community Worker to coordinate, join up and build on community work currently taking place and make it more sustainable. A community based hub will be developed around the Forest Green area over the next three years. The need for a Community Worker has been identified during discussions with groups working in the community including FGR Community, the Youth Club, Head of Nailsworth Primary School, Homestart and our PCSO. Monday 23rd May 7.30pm, Mortimer Room. Tickets £5 (£2 concessions) from www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/re-imagining- nailsworth-tickets-319811824777 or from the QR code below. This workshop is an opportunity to bathe in imagining the positive future you ’d like to see, and what our town and community could become. The thinking behind this work is to create an irresistible vision of the future that can motivate us to make it happen. Whilst it ’s important to pay attention to what ’s going wrong, and to try and avert catastrophe, there ’s a danger that we spend too much time imagining bad outcomes, and this can increase our stress. By contrast, imagining positively increases our well-being, and can be a first step to making it a reality. Participants will be invited to cultivate a vision of their ideal future for Nailsworth, and then to find commonalities that can become a shared vision to work towards. This workshop will be facilitated by Bill Roberts and Sue Ryall in collaboration with NailsworthCAN. ECO DRIVING Eco driving doesn ’t mean slower journeys just cleaner, safer, more affordable ones. Fuel efficient driving has never made more sense and here are some top tips on how to do it from the holder of the Guinness World Record for “hypermiling ”( going a long way by saving fuel) Sam Wollaston. His advice applies to conventional, hybrid and electric cars. Keep looking ahead - try to read the traffic pace yourself so you get through a green traffic light or don ’t stop at a roundabout if you can. No dashing to beat the red light! Keep it smooth - no harsh braking or accelerating and no idling the engine when you are stopped. At roundabouts try to keep moving rather than stop as in a fossil fuel car when you brake you waste energy. Hybrids and EV cars put energy back into the battery. Slow down - no need to smash the speed limit in urban areas and 60 mph on motorways leads to calmer cheaper journeys. Go with the flow of the traffic. Check tyre pressures regularly. Don ’t carry around unnecessary heavy loads in your boot or on the car roof. Get a smaller car - SUVs are not good fuel savers and really heavy carbon emitters too. Go electric - they are a lot cheaper to run even with electricity prices going up They are also easy and smooth to drive. Transport is a huge financial cost to household budgets in Nailsworth but it is also huge in terms of carbon emissions. Walking, cycling and using the bus has never made more sense. THANK YOU We ’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to our Climate Café at The Canteen in March. There was a lovely atmosphere with lots of chatting and great advice from our experts. Keep an eye out for details of our next one on Facebook and Instagram. Green business Last month we spoke about all the wonderful local businesses in our Green Directory. If you ’d like to find out more do get in touch. Why not make a start by trying these ideas for creating a more sustainable business? Move away from single-use plastic by reviewing all packaging. Reduce transport miles by sourcing, distributing, and hiring locally. Switch to a renewable energy company. Choose suppliers who produce more environmentally friendly products. Be brave and make sure you communicate any changes to your customers. We will be at the Nailsworth Festival on Saturday 21st May. Do pop by and have a chat, we ’d love to meet you. 7 ----------------------------------------------------- Page 8 ----------------------------------------------------- C H U R C H & U K R A I N E Church Letter By the time you read this, our Easter services will be over and we look forward to summer and the warmer weather. Some of our children are preparing for their First Holy Communion which will take place on the feast of Corpus Christi, 19th June. Meanwhile it is lovely to see all the younger children enjoying their special Liturgy every Sunday at our 11am Mass. They go upstairs and do activities such as drawing or listening to stories, usually based on the Gospel of the day. They then re-join the congregation and tell us all about their activities and show us their pictures, etc. and we give them a big round of applause. Fr. Gary Brassington is now our Parish priest. He is also Parish Priest for Stroud, Painswick and Stonehouse parishes: a very busy man indeed, so we are so glad that despite being retired, Fr. Some of our parishioners recently took part in CAFOD ’s sponsored walk and were amazed to raise nearly £600 for the work they do across the world. It will be so good to see those ducks bobbing along again! We are so grateful to local businesses for all their support so far from sponsoring races to providing absolutely amazing prizes. In the coming weeks we will share the great races and prizes that can be won on our facebook page so please follow us to find out more ‘Nailsworth Duck Race ’. There are vouchers for local shops, pubs and restaurants, hampers and goodie bags, days out and experiences (have you ever fancied a flight in a glider or a tour of Highgrove??) The last two years have been really challenging for us all and the children at the school have coped amazingly with having their schooling, play opportunities and friendships turned upside down with school closures and times of isolating. It has also been really challenging for the PTFA to fundraise. The money that we raise will go directly to enhancing the education of all children at the school and will include funds to purchase creative craft materials, activities such as swimming, new books and improvements to outdoor play spaces. Please do come and support your town ’s primary school on the 21st of May and be in with a chance of winning some amazing prizes and have loads of fun at the festival! If you haven ’t joined us before, this is a real community event where you can stretch your legs and the dog ’s through Gatcombe Wood and Avening Court (both not normally open to the public) and raise lots of money for our Elderly Care Charity at the same time. A shuttle bus service will run from Minch Library to Avening Court and Avening Social Club for those who prefer to do only a section of the Walk (or just see the Gardens of Avening Court) and by popular demand, a shorter return route will be signed if the full 10 miles is a bit much! However, by happy coincidence this is also the day of Box Open Gardens; should you do the whole walk, you can support another important charity event and enjoy some lovely gardens on your way through Box. So to register, donate and see all the event details as they become available, go to www.horsfallhouse.co.uk/ fundraising Horsfall House Challenge for 2022 has two important aims, to purchase three more Lateral Tilt Pressure Care Mattresses and raise an equal amount for Care Funding. The target is £16,700 and for every additional £5,566 we raise, there ’ll be another mattress and a similar contribution to our Care Funding. If you aren ’t familiar with these sophisticated mattresses, they gently tilt an immobile patient from one side to the other every 10 mins, improving their comfort and reducing the number of times they need to be physically repositioned and disturbed in the process. Care Funding is where the Charity tops up the fees of our GCC funded residents, in order to meet the full cost of their care (around £2,000 per month per resident) and it requires a lot of fundraising! Again, all the details and everything you need to know about taking part or donating are at www.horsfallhouse. co.uk/fundraising Finally, the Festival Players will be back in the grounds of Horsfall House with A Mid Summer Night ’s Dream on Friday 17th June 7.00pm. It was a warm Wednesday afternoon at the end of March; I had just come home from school. I went into the garden to pick flowers and I saw a bee and I think she was very tired because she wasnʼt moving much . “What can I do to give her energy Gaye Gaye? ” “We can give Betsy a flower to see if she can get some nectar. ”said Gaye Gaye We chose yellow and pink primroses and a pink hyacinth flower. After, I got on my knees and saw her little tongue licking the nectar out. I really did! Half the body, including the head disappeared inside the flower . She was there for a few minutes! Soon, she was off for the next flower. She went for a little rest in the flower for about 5minutes and then it started raining so I got a plastic plant pot and a stick at made a little house to keep her dry. Then I left her in peace. I couldnʼt wait too long. She was always ok. Now, we are doing Bee duty and Bee reporting about the bee Betsy. Soon she had gone to sleep in her new home and. I said “Good Night Betsy ”.. Next morning Betsy was rehoused to enjoy the sun with water and fresh flowers/ nectar. Within 20 minutes she flew away. Hurrah. The children have studied the Roman invasion of Britain, and the visit brought to life everything learned in the classroom. We used Roman replica clothing to explore the roles of Roman and Celt settlers, explored Roman graves and created tombstones for prominent Romans using Roman numerals. We also explored the galleries and the artefacts and the museum ’s interactive resources. We walked to the Amphitheatre and sat in the middle to imagine the sporting events and entertainment that would have taken place there. Foxes class visited The Wild Place Project in Bristol for their ‘Awesome Animals ’ topic. The children had a wonderful time seeing amazing animals close up. Lottie said “we saw some Cheetahs – my favourite ”; Alice said “we went in the Giraffe ’s house; they were really long ” and Billy said “I saw some Meerkats watching out for danger ”. In early April a small group of children took part in an orienteering adventure at Westonbirt Arboretum, led by Atlas Sports. With other schools they explored the site, using map reading skills to locate information boards about Plant Hunters. It was great to be outdoors and active again. Owls class led an ‘Experience Eucharist ’ workshop for the whole school. Reverend Caroline told the children about The Eucharist and its importance to Christians. Older children set up workshops around the school for younger classes which included making doves using painted hand prints; learning how Christians show the sign of the Peace to one another and decorated candles, just like those given to a baptised person to represent the light of Jesus. The children then came together to explore the chalice and the significance of the sharing of wine at Holy Communion, decorated their own chalices and shared some Ribena together. The event led us nicely to the Easter Service, delivered by years 5 and 6 on the last day of term. Gary Price, Headteacher Playcircle News We are very thankful that this term at Playcircle has seen the return of some social time for families. For the first time since the pandemic we have been able to extend our sessions again to include a much needed cup of tea and a chance to connect with fellow parents. We have opened up our Playspace area again and it has been wonderful (and rather emotional!) to see the toys that have been tucked away in a cupboard, being played with again. We have also enjoyed re-visiting some of our favourite stories this term, including celebrating all the Mums in our Mother ’s day session. As the seasons change so do our songs and stories and we are looking forward to a term of flowers, sunshine and butterflies! We would like to say a huge thank you to all the families that came to support our Ukraine fundraiser. A morning of CARPENTER AND JOINER storytelling, singing, cake and amazing musical story sessions and to meet raffle prizes raised over £2000 to go to local families. Our focus continues to the DEC fund. be on the joy and importance of music, If you are new to playcircle we invite language and play for the early years you to come and join us at the Townhall ...and for all of us! in Nailsworth on a Tuesday, Wednesday Find us at: www.playcircle.co.uk (under 1s) and Thursday to join creative Wendy Gibson, Playcircle Your local tree experts for over 25 years Surgery, Felling & Stump Removal Pruning and Hedge Trimming Debris Recycling Full Consultancy Service, Free Quotations Tel: 01285 760466 Aston Down, Stroud GL6 8GA NO JOB TOO SMALL CLIVE SYMCOX THE OLD COACH HOUSE, COW LANE, INCHBROOK, NAILSWORTH GL5 5HN 01453 836818 20 C M Y CM MY CY CMY K SIX LOCKSMITH SERVICES GUTTER VACUUM & REPAIRS DOMESTIC PLUMBING www.futuresix.com 07933 629849 / 07973 326351 enquiries@futuresix.com 60mm x60mm Advert.pdf 1 12/08/2020 12:26 on ur ou r ai w bl e fe te rs C re nt av of la eb si ----------------------------------------------------- Page 21 ----------------------------------------------------- S PORTS FGR News Forest Green Rovers have led League Two since September. They have the best attacking record in the league, one of the best defences and both home and away form has been remarkably consistent. Despite a recent dip in form, they still lead League Two by 5 points with just four games left to play. This all adds up to the finest football Nailsworth has ever seen. The dip in form began in February and caused some nervousness. Could FGR ’s promotion chances be coming off the rails? Then three successive 1-0 wins against Colchester, Scunthorpe, and Mansfield, followed by a 1-1 draw against Hartlepool, turned the tide and a heavy loss away to Barrow was redeemed by a 2-0 home win against Oldham. The Mansfield game was, arguably, a season-defining match: played on a Tuesday, under lights, in an electric atmosphere at the Fully Charged New Lawn. Rovers have one of the smallest squads of players in this league and the squad became smaller when top scorer, Matty Stevens, was ruled out for the rest of the season, injured in the game against Scunthorpe. But Matty may have already done enough – his 23 goals have been a significant factor in Rovers ’ success this season. Matty ’s replacement was Josh March, who started the game against promotion rivals, Mansfield. Josh ’s strike was the only goal of the game as Rovers secured probably their most important home victory this season. We have rarely seen celebrations like it at the village club on the hill! Easter Monday saw Oldham Athletic in Nailsworth. Rovers secured the three points with a 2-0 win in a sunlit stadium that was in the mood to celebrate. Victory meant Rovers are all but mathematically certain to be promoted to League One for the first time in their history. Congratulations to manager Rob Edwards, Captain, Jamille Matt, and a terrific group of players! Don ’t forget you can read previews of Rovers upcoming matches at fgrsc. com (perhaps join the FGR Supporters Club at the same time!) and you can also watch game highlights on the club ’s website, fgr.co.uk Finally; did you know? The pitch at The Fully Charged New Lawn is organic! It is sustainable grass, and it is entirely free from pesticides and weed killers. We believe it ’s the only organic pitch in the League! Also, there was more football royalty at The Fully Charged New Lawn recently. Nigel Clough (right), the Mansfield manager, is pictured with FGR boss Rob Edwards. Phil & Wilf Doble FGR Supporters ESS Sponsors MinchGirls Rugby Team ESS Employment recently helped and sponsored the Minchinhampton Under 13 ’s Girls Rugby Team at the MinchGirls Festival of Rugby on 27th March and provided sports bottles for the event.
