----------------------------------------------------- Page 1 ----------------------------------------------------- JUNE 2022 NO. 222 A free monthly community paper for the parish of Nailsworth, available in colour on our website www.nailsworthnews.org.uk The Genesis of the Queen ’s Reign On the 21st April 1947 Princess Elizabeth made a radio broadcast to the Commonwealth to mark her 21st Birthday, her coming of age. She was to become Queen only five years later. The young Princess made this vow. “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great Commonwealth family to which we all belong. But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God Princess Elizabeth broadcasting from the garden of bless all of you who are willing Government House in Capetown, South Africa to share in it. ” Platinum Jubilee This issue marks an iconic moment in our Queen ’s long and dedicated reign. The Jubilee programme on page 12 carries details of how Nailsworth will celebrate this unique occasion, whilst Nailsworth Writers recall memories from the momentous events of Queen Elizabeth ’s reign on page 13. The programme is published in the NN in collaboration with NTC. FGR- Champions On page 24 we report a first for ‘the little club on the hill ’, recently crowned Champions of League Two. Despite the recent loss of their manager to Watford, the club, in the capable hands of owner Dale Vince, will, no doubt, live up to their growing reputation in the coming season. Come on you Rovers! Nailsworth In Bloom Last, but not least, a plea from the Bloomers, to save the iconic water-wheel planting by Brutons. Just a half hour of your time in the evening to water and deadhead plants throughout the summer, on a rota basis, will ensure the survival of this wonderful display. Without more help, scheduled planting of the waterwheel at the end of May simply will not happen. We cannot lose this icon: it has become part of our Town and its identity! Thanks go to Des and Ruth who manned the stall whilst the Chairman visited other stalls talking to anyone who would listen to him!! The following day members of the Branch attended the annual ANZAC Day Parade at Leighterton. Although a parade could not be held, well over 100 people, supported by the Nailsworth Silver Band, an RAF Cadet group and over 25 County Standards attended a very moving Service. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the County, the National RBL and from New Zealand and Australian representatives, whilst local schoolchildren laid flowers and read out the names of those who died. Many Townsfolk will have seen the Tommy bench at the bottom of Springhill which is now in place. The RBL would like to express thanks to SDC, and in particular Rozelle and Councillor Steve Robinson. Looking forward to the Queens Platinum Jubilee weekend, there will be another quiz, kindly supported by NTC, on Friday 3rd June 22 in the Town Hall. Again, the doors open at 7pm with a 7.30 start – everyone welcome to compete and aim to become Nailsworth ’s champion quiz team!!! The Royal British Legion is the UK ’s leading Armed Forces charity and one of its largest membership organisations. Members get together through the network of branches and clubs all over the country and overseas to participate in social, fundraising and welfare activities. The Forest Green & Nailsworth Branch meets at 1900 on selected months throughout the year - Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec - at the Social Club in Nailsworth. The next meeting is on Thursday 21st July 2022. Tim Godden, Forest Green & Nailsworth Branch Royal British Legion ----------------------------------------------------- Page 3 ----------------------------------------------------- LOC A L CO U NC I LS A Word From The Mayor Jubilee celebrations You ’ll see from the programme of events taking place during the Jubilee festival bank holiday weekend that there ’s a very wide variety of activities planned and there ’s bound to be something of interest to everyone. The Town Council brought together many of our local community groups earlier in the year to start coordinating plans for this very special celebration, and it ’s very heartening that so many people have been prepared to put a lot of time and effort into ensuring that the weekend will be a huge success. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this fantastic effort, and I hope that you all enjoy what ’s happening in town and have a great time joining in and celebrating such an historic event. MCC Rally We look forward to welcoming members of the MCC (Motor Cycling Club), Britain ’s oldest sporting club for motorcycles and cars, when they come to Nailsworth for the first time as the start and finish of their 120th anniversary 3-day rally later this month. They ’ll be setting off from Egypt Mill Hotel car park from 7am onwards in groups on Friday 24th June and returning to the bus station in Old Market from about 2.30pm on Sunday 26th. More than 100 motorcycles and cars are expected to take part, and the finale in town should be a unique and very exciting spectacle. Green Transport Fair NCAN (Nailsworth climate Action Network) is planning the town ’s first Transport Fair on Sunday 26th June, which will coincide with the MCC rally finale. The Fair will be in the bus station and Mortimer garden from 10.30am to 6.30pm and will feature vehicles from the 1920 ’s to state of the art electric cars and bikes. The event should be a great way for visitors to ask questions of experts about sustainability and to demonstrate how action on climate now will make real positive differences for the future. Town Council meetings I ’m pleased to report our recent return to holding face to face Council meetings in the Town Hall. Although attending a meeting isn ’t now quite as convenient as going onto Zoom, it improves communications and is a more pleasant way to carry out business. All regular Council meetings are open to the public and you ’re welcome to come along and see how we make decisions. All agenda and details of meetings are on the Council ’s web page at https://www.nailsworthtowncouncil. gov.uk/council/event/ Mike Kelly District Councillors ’ Report We attended a District Council event recently at the Museum in the Park, where we celebrated the success of our local team, Forest Green Rovers and congratulated their impending promotion to league one. We are proud of the club ’s sustainability and Steve, as chair of SDC, addressed the visitors and club members. We wish them well for the future. May is the month when SDC has its annual meeting, electing members to posts for the forthcoming year. We would not have the plaques without Mike ’s determination and energy, but equally he has done this with a whole team of people and organisations behind him. We thank Kirsty Trueman of NTC for persuading Mike to tell his story. NN Editorial Team My first real interest in WW1 goes back to 1980, when, on our return Family holiday trip from the Jura region of France, we decided to break our journey at the Somme. I was taken aback by the number of Commonwealth War Cemeteries full of our very heroic Soldiers. From there on we visited the Somme and Belgium battlefields regularly trying to piece together my father ’s movements. He was a survivor, although, with a nervous disposition all the rest of his life. 2014 saw the centenary of WW1. My Brother-in-law Richard and I, with volunteers, put on an exhibition at The Comrades Club, with plays and demonstrations for Schools. To achieve this, a lottery grant was sought to fund the costs. Kindly overseen by Jonathan Duckworth and the NTC. Within the costing was 14 blue plaques of the type used by the late Fred Venning in Avening. From here on things snowballed. Nailsworth residents wanted to buy plaques and donate towards this project. Likewise, grants were given by the NTC, The Nailsworth Society, Renishaw Charity and not forgetting the very generous people of Nailsworth. It has been teamwork throughout and could not have happened without the skilful work of archivists, Ros John, Ann Brick, Ann Ind and Fiona Stone, who worked tirelessly. At this point I must thank the Town 4 Council staff for their help and also handling the finances for me As things progressed with WW1, knowing the difficulties of finding the Soldiers dwellings, we decided to research WW2 whilst there were residents alive to help the process. I ’m grateful to my elder sister Rita and brother Graham who were able to pin-point all 28 dwellings Finding the 77 WW1 soldiers dwellings proved to be very difficult but giving up was not an option. Eventually we got there, using initiative, and pacing the roads of Nailsworth hoping for a break. The first WW1 walks that I devised consisted of two walks because there were only about 25 blue plaques installed. As the numbers increased, I would change it to 3 walks and so on. The last 3 years has been a busy time, Madeleine joined me in creating 6 blue plaque walks, including 75 blue plaques and the majority of the 27 green plaques, and not forgetting the most recent sand yellow plaque for Mark Chandler, Afghanistan war. Jonathan Duckworth encouraged and helped me with mapping in the early stages. We now have to put all the info together. Brian Middleditch very kindly digitalised all of the Soldiers records in walk order for Cartographer Chas Thursfield of Four Point Mapping, who designed and mapped all 6 walks, free of charge, ready for Leopard Press to print. It was a long difficult task. Now for printing. Going back a while, Ken Culham and members of Rotary Nailsworth wanted to help with this project by fully supporting the printing costs, hence, the walk leaflets are free of charge. Each walk has its own character, but for certain, we must remember the brave men of Nailsworth who sacrificed their lives so we can be free to walk this beautiful countryside in and around Nailsworth. All the Soldiers files are available to be seen at Nailsworth Archive Centre, 1st floor, Town Hall, Old Bristol Road. The walk guides are available from The Town Information Centre, Old Market. A big thank you to my colleagues at the Archives for their great help and support Lastly, to all the people that have helped, maybe in a small way or have accommodated plaques or way markers on their property; thank you for being so kind, much appreciated. Mike Harvey ----------------------------------------------------- Page 5 ----------------------------------------------------- HEALTHCARE The Hollies Care Centre, Wins National Awards The Hollies Care Centre has been awarded a national Gold Standards Framework (GSF) Quality Hallmark Award for its delivery of end-of-life care during the pandemic at the highest Platinum level. The Award was given as part of the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) Virtual Awards on 5th May 2022, which recognises health and social care providers delivering quality care in the final years of life. The Hollies Care Centre is one of 42 care homes, primary care, domiciliary care agency and hospitals to receive this prestigious award across the country, one of only four care homes in Gloucestershire to have attained GSF and the first to have achieved the Platinum level. Prior to the pandemic, GSF provided face-to-face workshops and have now successfully moved online to adhere to COVID-19 regulations. The training has been a huge success, supporting families and patients to discuss and plan for end- of-life care. Jonathan Hawkins, Managing Director of The Hollies and Holly Oak said: ‘The principal guidelines of the GSF have become ingrained into the very ethos of all that we do and have inspired staff across both our homes, to deliver the best possible loving care to residents. I am very proud of the whole team who have worked tirelessly over the past two years to achieve the Platinum GSF award. ’ Julie Armstrong-Wilson, Lead Nurse for GSF said: ‘Congratulations to all 12 organisations that have successfully achieved accreditation and reaccreditation. The last two years have posed incredible challenges to the health and social care workforce. We have also seen another 30 organisations demonstrate the sustainability of GSF and successfully receive the GSF Platinum Award, some more than once. The GSF team are so very proud of all our Award Winners. There has never been a more important time to ensure we deliver quality end-of-life care, well done to you all. ’ To find out more about the Gold Standards Framework, visit https://www. goldstandardsframework.org.uk/ and for The Hollies visit https://thehollies. co.uk/ or contact Chloe Ebbs on 01453 541400 THERAPY ZONE AROMATHERAPY DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE HOLISTIC THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE REFLEXOLOGY SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY Nuela 07958 157747 nuelamathew@hotmail.com Rose Unwin Reflexology MAR Traditional reflexology Pregnancy reflexology Fertility reflexology Indian head massage 07791 508061 Nailsworth GL6 0AH roseunwinreflexology@gmail.com www.roseunwinreflexology.co.uk Main Agent For Holidays From BRISTOL AIRPORT EXCLUSIVE OFFER Skip the queues with a FREE FASTRACK PASS when you book with Miles Morgan Travel Contact us today to book your next escape from Bristol Airport Phone lines open until 10pm 01453 836186 The Old Stamp Office, George Street, GL6 0AG *T&C Valid any booking made between 1st and 30th June 2022 on any holiday departing from Bristol Airport COMPUTER PROBLEMS? The Fair has been set up by Nailsworth CAN (Climate Action Network), who have organised the electric vehicles and bikes, whilst Nailsworth Chamber of Trade & Commerce have been responsible for the historic vehicles side of the Fair and the Motor Cycling Club ’s anniversary event. The day will include market stalls selling local food and drink, handmade gifts, and entertainment. ‘A transport fair is the perfect way to demonstrate how vehicles have changed over the years, and a great place for visitors to ask questions of experts on sustainability, ’ said Sarah Martin of the Chamber of Trade and Commerce. ’The aim is for people to have a fantastic time, but also to show how action on climate today will help make positive changes. ’ Among the classics will be a sidecar manufactured by the Baughan company based in Stroud from 1921-37, that ruled trials in the late 40 ’s, and a Hampton car, built at Dudbridge in the 1920 ’s, famous for climbing the Ladder. Alongside vintage vehicles, there will be an electric car and bike show, with information on other environmentally friendly products, to demonstrate transport and sustainability at their most compatible. In an action-packed finale, the Motorcycling Club will be celebrating its 120th anniversary Dick Peachey Three Day Trial, ending at Nailsworth Bus Station from 2.30pm. More than 100 motorcycles and cars will take part in the event and the competitive section of the trials will be held from 2pm on Wood Lane, above the King George V Playing Fields. Other entertainment will be provided 1970 ’S Classics on Rally by Nailsworth Silver Band and Nailsworth Choir and shoppers can enjoy a local food and craft market, with face- painting for children. ‘We see the fair as a way of sharing upcoming projects, and for members of the public to contribute their own ideas, too, ’ Sarah Martin said. ‘We all need to start making choices that will help the planet, and ensure a healthy present and future for our children. ’ Nailsworth Transport Fair will run from 10.30am-6.30pm in the town centre. So do come along on Sunday 26th June, 10.30am - 6.30pm in Nailsworth Town Centre. We hope to see you there! Electric Vehicle Myths There are several myths about EVs that are often repeated. This does not make them true! Let ’s consider some of the most common myths: Myth 1: The range isn ’t good enough The average driver travels 20 miles a day, and modern EVs can travel 200 miles on a single charge (some even more). This caters for the vast majority of journeys. For very long journeys, resources like Zap Map ensure recharging need not be an issue. Myth 2: They cost too much to buy Currently the upfront cost of an EV is higher than a petrol or diesel. However, when you include lower running costs, reduced tax and other perks, an EV becomes a cheaper option after a few years. Myth 3: With electricity prices going up, they ’ll cost too much to charge The cost of EV home charging can be a quarter of what was spent previously on fuel. You can compare your current car and an EV using this calculator www.zap-map.com/tools/journey-cost- calculator Myth 4: The charging infrastructure isn ’t good enough Many people can charge at home, using off-peak rates for electricity. Most petrol stations will have EV charging points soon. ZapMap is a great tool to find the nearest EV charging stations to your location (www.zap-map.com) which are growing in number. Myth 5: The batteries won ’t keep their charge very long Studies have shown that modern EV batteries will retain their charging capacity much longer than the fabric of the car will last. Data on a Tesla S showed it had 90% of its capacity after 200,000 miles. If you have any questions about EVs, come along to the upcoming Electric Vehicle show. You can also read more about these myths on our website at nailsworthcan.org/blog Eco Gardening Tips Here are a few tips for making your garden a bit greener this summer… Why not continue ‘No Mow May ’ throughout the summer months? Even if it ’s just in part of your garden, it ’s so good for insects and wildlife. Make a stone pile for reptiles and sloworms to live in and a log pile for small mammals and invertebrates. Install nest boxes for swallows, swifts, housemartins and garden birds - find out more on the RSPB website. Keep a wild patch of stinging nettles for butterflies to lay eggs on and caterpillars to feed. A small pond is great for amphibians and insects. Try using an old washing up bowl set into the ground with a few pebbles in it or a half barrel filled with water and flag iris. For natural pest control, encourage ladybirds into your garden to eat aphids and try using nematodes to combat slugs. Choose vegetable and flower seeds that are heirloom and not F1 hybrids, this means you can collect seeds for next year and share any extra. Once flowers like forget me nots, granny ’s bonnet, foxglove and poppy have ripe seeds, shake them around the garden for a lovely natural look. The more cover you have of plants you want, the less you will need to weed. Did you know? Nailsworth Garden Centre can now recycle your compost, soil and bark bags? We ’ve also heard that they now only sell 100% peat free compost - great news all round! 7 ----------------------------------------------------- Page 8 ----------------------------------------------------- CHURCH & F A I T H Church Letter In June this year we will think a lot about serving others. As we celebrate the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee, we remember her faithfulness in serving the nation and her faith in God, which she readily speaks of in her messages and annual Christmas broadcasts. This is a time of celebration and also a time to think about how we serve others. The 70 acts of service, is an initiative to encourage everyone to take on a task, an act of service to make a change for the better – contact St George ’s or Christ church for further information. Jesus said ‘I have come that you may have life, and have it in all its fullness ’ Serving others, is one way of helping others to life in all its fullness. Christian Churches in Nailsworth serve the community through many different activities and provide a warm welcome to all. By the 1st June Church of England Churches will have had their Annual Parochial Church meetings: a time when we look back over the year and forward to the future. Over the past year, much has happened at St George ’s. We have seen the return of monthly Saturday coffee mornings and varied midday entertainment, bible study, St G ’s Bees knees, baby and toddler group and our monthly Mary ’s meals, where monetary donations given from the sharing of a meal go to provide nutritious school meals to children living in some of the world ’s poorest countries. Many new things have also begun, St George ’s Stitchers, Men ’s Talk Time, St George ’s Dragons drama group for children school years 2 to 6, exploring poetry and most recently Time2talk, a time for those who are bereaved to share conversation and refreshments. Our worship pattern has also seen change, with the first Sunday of the month ’s fun interactive worship followed by a lunch. Activities are for everyone and all are welcome to come along! With the arrival of several families of Ukrainian refugees in and around Nailsworth, St George ’s is also setting up a Saturday morning clothes bazaar (all items free), so families who have arrived here with very little, can come and choose the clothes they need and enjoy refreshments and company. The first of these bazaars started from Saturday 21st May. We are asking for donations of good quality clothing – please visit our website for details. The Churches in Nailsworth are different denominations, but we are all churches with a shared Christian faith, bringing the message of God ’s love and care to all, in a world that is fragmented and divided. If you would like to know more about what is going on in our churches, please visit our church websites or give us a call. Rev. Their first stop was the Ice Cream factory before continuing to St. Albans Church, in Stroud, for lunch. Following on from lunch they will made their way to Stonehouse Methodist Church for afternoon tea and a very welcome lift home. Last year £1,516 was raised. We are hoping to beat that this year. A carer for her husband, Reg, it was agony not being able to see their two daughters. ‘They were allowed to be outside our window or at the garden gate, but they couldn ’t come in or help. ’ A lifelong sufferer from depression, Andrea could feel her mental health deteriorating. Yet, incredibly, her reaction has been to transform that pain into a thing of beauty - something for everyone to enjoy. For the past nine months, Andrea and eight other stitchers have spent dedicated hours creating a wall-hanging, ‘Through It All ’, now on permanent exhibition in St George ’s Church, Nailsworth. Each of the 15 squares making up the piece represents different emotions evoked by the pandemic; and all are explained in a booklet hanging beside the artwork. Some, such as Daphne ’s ‘Butterflies ’, are joyous: ‘Butterflies were always there but my busy life had stopped me seeing them ’. Others capture a darker mood: Jacquie ’s ‘Split Personality ’ reflects the tearfulness of one day, the optimism of another, along with the need to show the world a brave face: ‘Although I am now one person again, the sad one still exists, an essential part of me, but I keep her hidden. ’ Jane from Devon – the only non-local member – is a carer, who spent lockdown looking after difficult young men. For Frances, walking her dogs was a welcome escape; Cathy loved her garden. Even Reg contributed an idea, which Andrea stitched for him, the Severn Bridge representing the sister in Wales he was longing to see. Some of the stitchers had never attempted needlework before; one of them, the Rev Sue Sobczak, is highly skilled in the craft. A member of the Gold Work Guild, Sue believes that everyone can stitch. What ’s more, she says, it can be a form of meditation. ‘There ’s a rhythm to stitching; you quietly mull over things; perhaps look at them differently. I think it brings healing. ’ The Rev Caroline Bland, vicar at St George ’s, agrees. ‘Turning thoughts into something visual is a wonderful way of getting beneath the surface of things we normally don ’t discuss. People so often hide their feelings and say they ’re OK when they ’re not OK; we all need to know it is good to be open and to talk. ’ The stitchers are already thinking about their next project, this time a happy celebration of the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee. But the wall- hanging ensures that, alongside celebration, lockdown sufferings will not be forgotten. ‘And that ’s a precious thing, ’ Andrea says. ‘This is a tribute to those who suffered so much. Of course we need to move on. But we need to remember, too. It would be a terrible insult to forget the pain so many people experienced. ’ Katie Jarvis Tea - time concerts Christ Church, Newmarket Road, Nailsworth Sunday 12 June at 3pm A programme of music for solo violin and piano ranging from Beethoven ’s zesty ‘Spring ’ sonata to Pärt ’s hypnotic Spiegel im Spiegel and Gershwin ’s bluesy Three Preludes . These volunteers will need to liaise with each other, covering each other ’s holidays etc. to guarantee that the wheel is kept watered and deadheaded throughout the summer. It is a task best done in the evening, so may suit people who work during the day. In hot, dry weather it needs attention every evening and even in periods of rain it needs checking regularly as the foliage often stops rain filtering through to the soil. The volunteers will need to be fit enough to use watering cans and climb a short stepladder. A water source will be provided nearby. The task can be extremely enjoyable. Passers by, both local and visiting from all over the world, stop to chat and thank us for the work we do to keep Nailsworth smiling. Plus, there ’s a sense of pride in seeing the wheel, a reflection of our local heritage, in all its glory throughout the summer. This is our last desperate attempt to find extra help. The wheel is due to be replanted by the first week of June, but without ‘new blood ’ it will unfortunately be dismantled. If you are interested in helping to preserve this iconic Nailsworth Landmark, please contact Jacquie Joyce – N in Bloom Secretary, by email brummiewhale1@gmail.com, or by phone on 07511 520595. Written by Sir Michael Morpurgo, adapted for the stage by Vicki Berwick, the production is interwoven with poignant strains of violins and Mozart ’s magical music. In the first Act, the story, across three generations of one Jewish family, is conveyed to the audience by means of subtle exchanges, by a cast of just nine talented actors, all of whom are clearly accomplished musicians. As the story unfolds the action switches from the present to the past. In the second Act, depictions of a concentration camp and trains disgorging prisoners, directed left or right by a Nazi officer to their final destinies, are very moving and beautifully portrayed. The protagonist, Gino, is part of a small group of musicians who play for a Nazi officer, thus prolonging their lives in captivity. Returning to the present, we see the surviving violin player and his family in happier times, though the memories prevent him from ever playing his beloved Mozart ’s music again. A happy conclusion sees Gino ’s son following in his father ’s footsteps as a violinist and finally being allowed to play Mozart for his father. The majority of stall seats in the matinee performance were occupied by a large group of schoolchildren and judging by the complete silence in the auditorium throughout the play, they, like me, were clearly enthralled by the performance. Whilst sipping a glass of wine in the interval, I picked up the programme for 2022 and have already earmarked two productions I would love to see. The seats in the auditorium are comfortable with adequate leg room and good disabled access and the small foyer bar was buzzing with theatregoers happy to be witnessing the magic of live theatre once again. The session evoked many personal childhood memories, some committed to paper during the session and shared here with you. Perhaps our recollections will stir your childhood memories. A Black Day On February 6th 1952, I was just 8 years old. When I went to school that day, I heard someone say ‘The King is dead ’, but I didn ’t believe it. It was only when all the male teachers returned from lunch wearing black ties, that I knew it must be true. My First Ice Lolly I was three years old when my father took me to London to watch the coronation procession. It was very exciting and perhaps the only time he and I went on an outing together. He lifted me high on his shoulders to see the glitter of gold and to hear the clip clop of horses ’ hooves, as the golden coach passed by. But my abiding memory of that day is my first, ever ice lolly: an orange flavoured lolly on a stick. For me, perched high on my father ’s shoulders, it was the true highlight of my day. Coronation Envy For the Queen ’s coronation, every child in the school was given a half-pint glass mug with the royal coat-of-arms stamped on it. My sister, too young for school, received a silver spoon in a velvet lined box, which I thought was much nicer (and more useful) than the mug! Monochrome Memory The new tiny-screened TV sat proudly in the corner of my aunt ’s sitting room, where the whole family crammed in together to watch the coronation – in monochrome. The Long Wait On the 8th September 1966, on a chilly, grey day, brownies and guides from Yate and Chipping Sodbury were taken by coach along the motorway to the Severn Bridge. We were told where to stand along the road and waited for a very long time until a row of cars appeared. The Queen, wearing an orange hat and coat, cut a ribbon, declaring the bridge open and was then driven across the bridge in a big, black car, with a flag on the bonnet. Crowns and a Homecoming Our Silver Jubilee street-party was a huge success. The children wore golden crowns made at school, jellies wobbled on laden tables and the sun shone. The day was memorable, not just for the Queen ’s celebration but also for the long-awaited return of my beloved brother from South Africa. My three small boys met their Uncle Bill for the very first time that day and a bond was formed between them that has endured and strengthened over time. Commemoration How will we remember this Platinum Jubilee in years to come? Photographs on the internet, fading newspaper articles, specially minted coins, stamps, souvenirs made of China, tea caddies, street parties, a national pageant, but best of all: ‘I was there! ’ Nailsworth Writers Calling All Poets! The open studios festival is an exciting time in the five valleys of Stroud. Artists and artisans open their homes and places of work inviting audiences to ‘see behind the scenes ’ of their sometimes solitary practices. As an artist who has participated in several of these events, I know they can be stimulating but also challenging when it is hard to host alone, wanting to engage with everyone who visits. My primary interest as an installation artist is the dialogue between object, scale, site and participation. I wanted to create an event working alongside other artists outside the gallery context, enlivening and entangling varied approaches and practices. Those participating are being invited to activate exchanges to form a network, with each Peter Rushton LANDSCAPES 1980 EST ‘conversation ’ supporting the other ; lone artist to practice, artist to artist, work to location and audience to experience. The appeal will give supporters a thoughtful way to remember someone special. When they make a generous donation to the appeal, they will reserve a beautiful metal Michaelmas daisy – a symbol of eternal love. Before being dispatched to their new homes, the daisies will be displayed in Stroud ’s Museum in the Park, from 2 August to 21 August. The mesmerising sight of hundreds of delicate blue daisies will give visitors a chance to pause and remember loved ones no longer with us. Sam is supporting Longfield ’s Daisy Appeal in memory of his mum, Gillian. He explained how Longfield helped him care for his mum at home, in her final months: “Mum had lung cancer which spread to her brain. She went downhill quickly when chemotherapy finished. Doctors told us nothing more could be done. The Longfield team visited us the same day mum came home from hospital. I was amazed at the level of support we received. It was professional hospice care, but in Mum ’s own home. Nothing was too much trouble. We had three visits a day at first, then overnight care too. When you ’re caring for someone you love, time is precious. The support we had from Longfield helped us make the most of our time together. In the most difficult of times, I have some beautiful memories of mum. ” Longfield supports people in Gloucestershire with a life-limiting illness, from diagnosis onwards. As well as providing Hospice at Home care, Longfield also offers help and support to patients, families and carers through a range of Wellbeing services at the hospice. To reserve a daisy, visit longfield. org.uk/daisy- appeal. The suggested donation is £30 per daisy. They visited local artist Gemma Pitman ’s ‘Living in the Landscape ’ exhibition and attended a talk by David Armstrong, a National Trust ranger and along the way they stopped to sketch, make observations about the landscape and complete fieldwork surveys looking at human and physical features. This month ’s tip: There are landmarks in life and renewing a driving licence at 70 is one of them. I was told, and the media would have you believe, the DVLA are not on top of things. Earliest that one can renew is 90days before your 70th birthday. I diarised this but two days later I received the official renewal in the post. (everything you need to know is there) It can be done on-line, BUT you need to have your current licence, passport, NI number and any medical documents you might need to hand. Go to the DVLA www.gov.uk/renew- driving-licence-at-70 Please, please not the ones offering to do this for you and making a charge. They are not scams; you just do not need to pay. Think very honestly about your eyesight and medical conditions. Check with your GP conditions that need to be reported also to your insurance company - currently there are 183 such conditions and if not reported could result in a fine of up to £1000 in the event of an accident and invalidate your insurance. Refresh your knowledge of the Highway Code, remember there have been major changes https://olderdriversforum.com/ they-highway-code/ not worth the lie. So I did all that and to my surprise was told my new licence would arrive in two weeks, and it did ! I must admit I have no medical complications, which does simplify things. The most difficult part of the whole process was cutting up my existing licence and posting the bits back to the DVLA. The team will play In League one next season, with only the Championship and the Premier League above them in the football pyramid. League 2 ’s EFL Manager of the Season is FGR ’s Rob Edwards (Nailsworth Council also awarded Rob the Joseph Chamberlain Award for sporting excellence this year); League 2 ’s EFL Player of the Season is FGR wing-back, Kane Wilson and EFL League 2 Team of the Season included FGR ’s Kane Wilson, Nicky Cadden, and Matty Stevens. Congratulations to all of them and to the whole of the magnificent squad! Rovers ’ final four games included visits to local rivals Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town (both teams had realistic ambitions of promotion). The game against Bristol Rovers proved to be pivotal and more than 700 travelling fans and over 10,000 Bristol supporters made for an electric atmosphere. The match was one of the most entertaining 0-0 draws of the season, and the single point gained was enough to guarantee promotion for the Nailsworth outfit. Maybe the achievement of promotion affected Rovers, because they then lost 2-1 away at Swindon and 3-1 to Harrogate Town in their final home game. These losses dropped FGR one point behind Exeter City in the table with just one game left to play. FGR travelled to Mansfield for their final game, while Exeter hosted Port Vale. Rovers needed to better Exeter ’s result if they were to climb above them. In a day that ebbed and flowed, Port Vale beat Exeter 1-0 while Rovers twice came from behind to draw 2-2 against Mansfield to become League 2 Champions on goal difference. Fine margins indeed! Rovers will be joined in League 1 next season by Exeter City and Bristol Rovers. One more team will be promoted via the play-offs (Port Vale, Swindon, Northampton and Mansfield are the contenders). There will be no shortage of West Country-ish derbies next season, with matches against Cheltenham Town, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle, as well as Exeter City, Bristol Rovers and, maybe, Swindon Town. The club have confirmed that sales of season tickets for next season have been brisk and that 40% of early sales are to new season ticket holders and FGR expects to break its own records for pre-season sales. If you haven ’t spent an afternoon at The New Lawn yet, next season may be the time to plan a visit! Star-struck! Did you know, FGR shirts have 3 stars on the neckline? One of these stars was filled in when Rovers came into League 2. A second star will be filled in when we go into League 1 next season and a 3rd star will be completed if the club achieves its ambition of reaching the Championship.
