Nailsworth In Bloom have been unable to recruit the help they need to continue providing colour and seasonal interest to our public spaces and we will miss them so much! On a lighter note, Nailsworth Dramatic Society is back! Drama lovers have missed their wonderful productions and the Town Hall will once more resonate to the sound of happy applause. Similarly, Nailsworth Film Club have had something of a renaissance and managed to show a whole programme of films between September and April. We look forward to news of both new productions and films in the coming season. Whilst the team that prepares the paper and administers our advertising and finance is important, the NN cannot function without the volunteers who deliver the paper to houses and businesses in Nailsworth. Sylvia Giles, who has delivered the NN since it first began over twenty years ago, has decided the time has come to give it up. We offer Sylvia our profound thanks for her sterling work over the years. The NN delivery team are the solid base of our organisation. Congratulations go to the winning team, Agatha Quizteam, and our thanks to everyone who took part. The evening could not have gone so well without the sterling efforts of Ruth, Des, Carol and Wendy, who made the event run so smoothly. The quizmaster will not be auctioning his shirt anytime soon! After our meeting on 19th May, the Branch was presented with its 100th year Certificate, following its formation in 1920, by the RBL County Vice Chairman John Maloney. On 28th May, the Chairman and Treasurer represented the Branch at a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum, where statues and monuments have been built not only to remember the fallen in War, but also in memory of many non-Service charities and organisations. A humbling experience at this amazing tribute. Finally, as part of the Queens Jubilee Platinum weekend a quiz night was held on 3rd June with 45 people, in ten teams, including K,n ’G, the Church, Nailsworth Society and the Film Club – an excellent turnout. We congratulate the winners from St George ’s Church! Your local, truly independent eyecare specialists offering you a professional, personal and spectacular service. Well done and many thanks to those of you who organised and helped with events. I called in on quite a few but there was so much happening that it was impossible to attend them all. I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves if you took part or attended anything locally and that you enjoyed some of the spectacular events on TV and radio. Tony Evans, our esteemed Town Crier, completed a world ’s first during the week leading up to the big weekend of festivities. He attended a reception at Highgrove House, met Prince Charles and explained to him that town criers throughout the country and Commonwealth countries were all due to give the same official cry about the Jubilee at the same time and date. Prince Charles, however, was so intrigued and pleased that he asked Tony to give the cry there and then, a day before the official planned cry. Pike Lane development I accompanied a fellow councillor who acted as the Town Council ’s representative to speak at Stroud District Council ’s Development Control Committee last month to object to Newland Homes ’ application for variations to the agreed design of houses at Pike Lane. We were very concerned that the changes, if agreed, would have an even greater detrimental impact on the environment and views across the beautiful valley due to planned increases in the size of some houses and lack of tree cover during the winter months. The Town council and many of you objected strongly to the original scheme which Stroud District Council initially refused, but this decision was then later overturned by the Inspector. I ’m pleased that the DCC voted unanimously against the application for the variations. Festival of Words It feels as though we ’re in the middle of festival season with a number of events being planned. One new event not to be missed is the Town Council ’s Festival of Words, funded by a Build Back Better grant. The festival will be a five-day appreciation and enjoyment of words and will feature a remarkable exhibition of the Concrete Poets of Nailsworth and surrounds. These local artists celebrated words through art, sculpture and artist books in the 60 ’s and 70 ’s. There will also be walks, talks, workshops and the crowning of Nailsworth ’s first Poet Laureate and more details are in this edition of Nailsworth News. I would like to thank the generous anonymous donor who provided cash for competition prizes. Heritage Open Day in September The Town Council is preparing to celebrate national Heritage Open Day on Saturday 10th September. This is a fantastic opportunity to see inside and find out more about some of the town ’s historic buildings. Preparations have started and participants need to register by 1st August. If you are interested in taking part and haven ’t yet been contacted, please contact staff in the Civic Centre. Council communications We make all decisions in Council meetings openly, and strive to communicate them to residents as best as we can. If you ’d like to see how items are discussed and decisions made, you ’re more than welcome to attend any full Council or committee meeting. Further details of meetings, including agenda and minutes, are available from the Town Council ’s web pages. I ’m unable to use social media so, if you ’d like to comment on any decisions that we make, please initially contact staff in the office. As well as some exceptional mill buildings, the town also has a number of interesting public and privately owned buildings which are listed or of architectural interest. Every year across the country, buildings and private houses open to the public for Heritage Open Day. It ’s a wonderful way to attract people to cities, towns and villages whilst also showing off some architectural gems that are not normally open to the public. Nailsworth Town Council is coordinating plans for this year ’s Heritage Open Day due to take place in Nailsworth on Saturday 10th September. Cllr Mike Kelly, Mayor of Nailsworth, said: “You don ’t have to live in a listed building to take part. Your site can offer something of interest historically or culturally; maybe there was a famous visitor to your building or something of local historic interest. Maybe you ’d like to help someone else by stewarding, putting on a display – or even dressing in costume. ” If you own or live in an interesting or listed building and would like to share some of its history and take part in the Heritage Open Day, you ’re invited to register your interest by contacting the town council via email adminassistant@ nailsworthtowncouncil.gov.uk , or by telephone 833592. You can find out more from the Heritage Open day website at this address https://www. heritageopendays.org.uk/ We hope to publish a full programme of events in the September issue of Nailsworth News, but make a date in your diary. Perhaps first of all, a thank you to all the volunteers past and present who worked so tirelessly to make the town look so beautiful, even during the stresses and strains of the pandemic. Thanks also to the waterwheel volunteers who responded so well to our ‘shout out ’ for ‘waterers and dead headers ’. Thanks are due to my fellow members of the Committee, both those who work so hard to organise things on the planting side and those who work more quietly in the background. We have all done the best we possibly could. Special thanks to Liz Steele, our planting coordinator, who has really dedicated the last five years of her life to making the town look gorgeous; to her partner- in- crime, Sheila Peaple, always armed with a heavy watering can; to Nick Sutton, wheelbarrow man extraordinaire and to Liz Townley, our Chairman, who has become an expert in applying for grants and seeking out the weird things that are sometimes requested. I expect by now, you may have guessed what news I am about to break to you. With heavy hearts, the Committee has decided that Nailsworth in Bloom as an organisation will cease to exist after the next Annual General Meeting in September. We have already handed over responsibility for the Mortimer Gardens, the Clock Tower area and the Sensory Gardens to the Town Council, who are planning to employ a part-time gardener to maintain them. Our decision was not taken lightly and there are valid reasons for it. • None of us is getting any younger! • We do have lives and responsibilities outside of being a Bloomer. • Our search for new volunteers has resulted in a few brave and dedicated people but nowhere near enough to be able to spread the load of work sufficiently. However, there is some good news. We are hoping to carry on looking after some of the tubs and planters and maintaining them. Our remaining funds will be held by the Town Council and we will use that money to purchase plants and compost. We plan to hold our final AGM on September 1st at 7pm in St George ’s Parish Rooms and, after that, Nailsworth in Bloom will be dissolved. I know I speak for all of us when I say that it has been wonderful to see what was designed and planned for become a reality; to see the town bloom and become more and more beautiful. As our last action, the three trees planted on Jubilee Saturday will become a reminder of what is possible when determined people come together with a vision. And thank you to all of you for your support, for your lovely comments as you pass by, for appreciating our efforts and for caring about the town. ‘If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. ’ - Cicero. Covid-19 struck almost as soon as Finch Optical was open, but Hannah felt it was important to play her part in the community and volunteered to remain open for emergency and urgent care. The pandemic also had an effect on The Optical Shop on George Street, which sadly went into administration in July 2020 when patients ’ records were transferred to Finch Optical for safeguarding. Hannah has been dispensing in Stroud and surrounding areas for over 20 years and was delighted to open the practice in the heart of Nailsworth. Hannah sincerely believes in giving all patients an individual experience at Finch Optical, ensuring that they receive the best possible care. We have four highly experienced Optometrists in the practice to assess eye health, using traditional methods. Patients can also benefit from state-of- the-art technology to further examine their eyes, using optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive cross-sectional picture of the eye. This gives a more comprehensive examination, when consultants will share and interpret their findings with the patient. We also offer contact lens fitting and a monthly contact lens scheme, whereby all your eye health is taken care of, including all sight tests, solutions (if required), discounts on contact lenses and spectacles and delivery to your home address. As a genuinely independent practice, with an eye for design and keeping abreast of current trends, our collections are as individual as the people we serve. With regular additions of new stock, we have plenty of opportunity to help you find the perfect frame for your lifestyle and personality. We know Nailsworth CAN make a difference, come and join us. GET IN TOUCH Email: Nailsworthcan@gmail.com Web: www.nailsworthcan.org Instagram: @nailsworthclimateactionnetwork FB: Nailsworth Climate Action Network The future of Nailsworth We had a great turn out to the wonderful ‘Re-imagining Nailsworth ’ event which took place in May as part of the Nailsworth Festival. Bill Roberts and Sue Ryall gave participants an opportunity to imagine the positive future they ’d like to see and what our town and community could become. The thinking behind this work was to create an irresistible vision of the future that can motivate us to make it happen. The philosophy behind ‘re-imagining ’ is that while it ’s important to pay attention to what ’s going wrong and to try and avert catastrophe, there ’s a danger that we spend too much time imagining bad outcomes and this can increase our stress. By contrast, imagining positively increases our well- being and can be a first step to making it a reality. Participants were invited to cultivate a vision of their ideal future, and then to find commonalities that can become a shared vision to work towards. Here ’s what they said: ‘Bill and Sue created a magical yet safe space that allowed us to imagine a positive future without any limits to our imagination. I was encouraged to find that my own vision was shared by many other people in the room. One surprising outcome was the need to harness the water that runs through Nailsworth, whether as a public swimming pool or paddling space for children in the centre of town. ’ ‘When thinking about solutions to the climate crisis it is so easy to want to jump to answers and to feel constrained by a narrow conversation on immediate concerns. This workshop gave me permission to connect again with that child-like ability to simply imagine and to connect with others and their imaginings without being told ‘oh that ’s impractical ’. The process started quite gently and then we were gradually sharing ideas in small groups until the finale where we offered up ideas on nature, education, transport, and much more. This was not about creating a blueprint for Nailsworth but a vision to aspire to, that can inspire us and guide us in our more immediate efforts. It raises the question: are we being brave enough, and radical enough, to imagine a fairer and more sustainable future that everyone can enjoy? ’ This workshop should not be seen as the end (of our aim to reimagine Nailsworth), but a new kind of beginning. We hope to run similar events in the future, to engage more people, in a variety of settings. If you are a local group or school who would like to run this sort of event please get in touch with us to discuss further. For more information see our blog post at www.nailsworthcan.org/blog. No-one is pointing a finger at the current staff or previous ones as they serve us well in Nailsworth and the outlying villages. The problem is that Lloyds, as a company, has become incompetent and totally unreliable. Twenty-nine members of the Lèves Twinning Association visited us for three days, bringing some wonderfully warm and sunny weather with them. After a reception at the Mortimer Room, where they were offered refreshments and a warm welcome from Mayor Michael Kelly with his dog Nicky, the guests went off to stay with their hosts in and around the district. The following days they were entertained, taken on visits to some of our stunning Cotswold attractions, and even played an energetic boules match at the KGV pitch. The highlight of their stay was a guided visit of the whole of Ruskin Mill, from the café, through the grounds and up through the woods to the Festival Field and the kitchen, finishing off at the remarkable Field Centre. Workshops were visited with demonstrations from the students and their teachers, fish were fed Nigglesworth For many years the Nailsworth News has, from to time, published letters from Nailsworth residents about local matters that annoy them. It has always been our practice to publish such items anonymously. NN Editorial Team On Bank Holiday Sunday two ladies came up Nympsfield Road litter-picking. in the fish farm and Aonghus Gordon, accompanied by Chiara Borrelli-Parker (speaking fluent French), explained the vision and work of Ruskin Mill and its other colleges and schools. A huge lunch was awaiting the visitors at the Field Centre, much of the food being sustainably produced at the farm itself. The trout was particularly delicious. In the evening, guests were invited to the traditional social, taking place at Nailsworth Primary School. Pimm ’s cocktails were enjoyed in the lingering evening sunshine with musical accompaniment throughout the evening from Patsy Gamble ’s band. Food was provided by William ’s and Elisabeth Targett and the 25th anniversary On Monday morning a large bag had been dumped in the undergrowth on the roadside containing men ’s trainers and filthy used clothing. In the bottom of the bag was a greetings card to “Paddy ”. This rubbish has been disposed of but I ’d like to suggest that the person concerned makes a contribution to a local charity as gift – a beautiful banner created and embroidered by the Nailsworth Textile Group, led by Jayne Butler, representing scenes from Lèves and Nailsworth, was presented to Lèves chairman, Philippe Vanneau. Central to this is an exciting new exhibition of the work of the Concrete Poets, who from the 1960s and ‘70s celebrated the intrigue and fun of words by displaying them in unique ways. In 1963, at the New Inn in Gloucester, the Benedictine monk Dom Silvester Houédard (dsh) first met the artist John Furnival. In a small back room, serendipitously named ‘The Monk ’s Retreat ’, they discussed the phenomenon of concrete poetry and how they might publish it. Over the course of their conversation, they initiated their publishing collaboration, Openings Press, effectively starting the Gloucestershire concrete poetry scene, subsequently known as GLOUP (Gloucestershire groUP of concrete and kinetic poets). Sounds posh? Well, it ’s a multi-headed body which anyone can join. You don ’t have to be retired, wealthy, male or English but it helps if you are living in or around Nailsworth. Founded in 1974 it has undergone some changes over the years but basically it allows 180-plus members many opportunities to socialise and share interests. The Society currently consists of seven different groups and member can take part in one or all of the activities on offer. Four groups meet in rotation on Monday evenings in the Sawyer Hall: the Arts, Crafts and Music Group, bringing in expert speakers and practitioners across the wide range of the arts; the Local History Research Group, presenting original research on the Nailsworth area as well as the findings of historians ’ studies about the county and the Gardening Group, again featuring experts but also arranging visits to a variety of gardens during the summer together with plant sales and a Spring Show. Finally, the Local Studies Group, covering a wide range of subjects of relevance to Gloucestershire, including natural history, archaeology, politics, architecture and industry and n common with the other groups, at least one outdoor visit in each year ’s programme. For the more energetic, the Ramblers ’ Group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from February to November for a local walk, usually about five miles and always ending at a pub for a refreshing lunch. The active part of the year ends with a celebratory Ramblers ’ Supper full of memories and quizzes. Our smallest group is the Creative Writing Group, otherwise known as Tell-Tales, where participants produce prose or poetry, humour or drama, with the results performed in public from time to time. Then we come to the Performing Arts Group in which visits are organised to theatrical events of all kinds at a range of accessible ‘local ’ venues. Group discounts are available and transport can be provided. Where else can you find such a range of activities in a single organisation for a membership fee of only £10 a year? This year that encompasses over 50 events! Groups normally charge a meetings fee of £2, Ramblers £1, to cover their running expenses and refreshments and visitors are welcome too. You can find details of all our meetings in the Society ’s Year Book – the TIC has copies available and also membership forms. There are updates posted in the Library foyer and the latest information can be found in What ’s On or on our website www.thenailsworthsociety.co.uk So, no excuses! Children from years 3 to 6 (ages 7 – 11) joined with hundreds of schools from across the UK to take part in this year ’s Young Voices Concert at Birmingham NEC. Accompanied by a live band, they sang their hearts out in the vast arena with support acts by street dancers and award-winning beat boxers and an impressive light show. We are so proud of our small choir and the effort and enthusiasm they have put in throughout the year, leading up to this amazing event! The children have also been excelling in art recently. Each year the Diocese of Gloucester invite children from Church Schools to submit a piece of art that expresses their reflections of RE and Spirituality, accompanied by a commentary from the child about how their art reflects their learning, opinion or refection on the theme. This year the theme was ‘Glimpses of Belief ’. Every class submitted entries and we had three winners out of the nine chosen by the Diocese along with two runners up. Here at Amberley Gardening Club not only have members been busy growing flowers, fruit and vegetables for the coming year, but also finding time to visit and appreciate all kinds of gardens around the country for inspiration. We were very successful with our plant sale on 7th May, where sizeable funds were made from the sale of a wide variety of plants, including shrubs, perennials, grasses and vegetable seedlings. The coffee and cake stall run by the Shop on the Common, and the bric-a-brac stall to raise funds for Ukraine both contributed to the morning ’s fun. This event has the makings of a permanent fixture each year we hope. So, thanks to all who helped make this a success. The Club visit in May to Daglingworth House and North Cerney House provided a wealth of interest in both planting and design. Daglingworth ’s formal structure, with its borrowed vistas through windows in hedging and walls, contrasted with the stunning old walled garden and relaxed planting at North Cerney. On such visits, we try to visit two gardens in a day, and to keep journeys within the hour or so. The five Rotary members who had volunteered looked at the rubble strewn terrain into which these trees were to be planted and thought the project was a no-goer from the start. However, along with other volunteering groups, we toiled at the task of digging holes for the trees through a mixture of soil laden with bricks, stones, assorted metal and other builders ’ rubbish.
